Music video — Hip Bones at Awful Arthur’s Towers, Thursday night

Hip Bones, from parts across the continent, hit Awful’s Towers again on Thursday, and the jazz/rock/funk trio sounded as tasty and musical as ever.

Here’s the band’s Gary Schwantes tearing up a sax solo on a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” To avoid any copyright issues, I avoided posting any part of the song that actually sounded like “Purple Rain.” That’s the beauty of jazz, folks — after the head, good players can take a song in all kinds of great places.

Laying down the groove for Schwantes are drummer Robin Tolleson (of Modern Drummer correspondence fame) and bassist Shannon Hoover (who has played with Bobby Lee Rodgers and Jeff Sipe, among others. Really fun show last night.
