June 8th  Joe Overton and The Clear Blue Sky::Honky-Tonk Dance Party Dogtown Stage $5
Good, old-fashioned country music makes you want to dance. It tells the stories of pain, heart break, and hope that bring us all together. The Clear Blue Sky takes you there. They bring you real country music from their home on the Blue Ridge of Central Virginia. Frontman Joe Overton has one foot hopelessly stuck in 1954. He sings songs from the early days of country music, when hillbilly stringband music and the blues wove together with the electric guitar to create an infectious sound that would change the face of music.

Junkyard Rocketship.”
“So far, this the only description that nearly fits Strung Like A Horse. Their acoustic… driven sound fires people off …to the darker areas of this strange universe. Yet, it still seems to miss the point. These strange individuals and their music is like a hellbender found under a rock; not hard to find, but damn hard to get a grasp on.
Built in a garage two years ago, these fellas resemble a psychobilly diesel pick-up. There’s BJ Hitower’s manic bass work providing the suspension of the band; bouncing, at times weird, but always reliable.
Ben Crawford and his “s-s-s-s-string drum” banjo fuzz through the sound on the AM Radio.
Slothimus Prime and Bertha, his chairdrumset, ping-ding-crack-and-rumble like a pieced together yet functional engine.
“Spooky Chicklets” exists as an otherwordly force surrounding the truck; his violin sings the sounds of night-woods on the sides of the
highway.
Clay Maselle with his guitar in the shotgun steers the band into the depths of the wood.
Out of this same garage arises the Hightower Amplimaphone, the band’s own homemade amplifier for Clay’s kazoo. The Amplimaphone was just the first of many cabinets fashioned by the band. Certainly proficient, these fellas build on more than just their equipment: a list of exploits.
To bring it down to a point, these junkyard dogs bring “honest, playful, head-bangingly interactive fun” to any venue their rocket crashes.”

June 28th The Mantras with Strange arrangement Doors 7:30 Cover 10 18plus
Forming only six years ago, The Mantras continue to hone their direction and precision show by show. Building a reputation as go-for-broke live act, the quintet has been playing to consistently larger and larger crowds in their home state, including a number of sold-out shows. They have been steadily building a following both regionally and nationally with music that is a high-energy collaborative of funk-rock, middle-eastern, electronica, metal; a fusion that will shake your knees and rattle your toes.

In just a few brief years, Strange Arrangement has routinely filled larger venues throughout the Midwest as their ever evolving sound steadily gains more and more notoriety. Drawing on influences from the likes of Phish, Herbie Hancock, Umphrey’s McGee, and Wilco, Strange Arrangement takes audiences through several different musical genres touching upon jazz, funk, rockabilly, soul, and progressive and psychedelic rock. Opening for national touring acts such as Future Rock, Outformation, The New Mastersounds, and Umphrey’s McGee – as well as performing at large festivals like Summercamp, Hoxeyville, Bear Creek and North Coast Music Festival, Strange Arrangement’s original brand of dance friendly progressive funk has music fans taking notice. The relationship Strange Arrangement shares with its ever growing audience is based around the idea of creating a moment in time where one can laugh, dance, sing, and connect with the band and its music.

About this blog

cutNscratch is The Roanoke Times music blog. Music reporter Tad Dickens enjoys pickin' and grinnin' and drummin', and he likes to write about music, too. He'll post plenty about local, regional and national music, but it won't be any fun at all if you don't jump in and have your say. So do it!
