A new joint opens Friday in Salem and starts its run with some strong local music — PolyChrome and Grass Monkey

Remember Starter’s, in Salem? It’s been closed for a while, but the space is now in new hands. Melanie Straley, who booked bands into Markell’s during its brief foray into Roanoke’s live music scene, has bought the place and renamed it The Pirate Sip Barr.

The bar(r) just got its ABC license (beer and liquor) and will open Friday, with popular pop-rockers PolyChrome kicking off the action. The band starts at 10 p.m., and there is no cover.

Grass Monkey plays the room at 10 p.m. Saturday. It’s another free show.

    Fail, please…

Now why in the world would you hope for a business to fail, “Maw”? That just seems rude.

Not rude, just honest. I hate that place and all that was there before.

Any business that supports local artists is A OK. Word?

I would never root for failure for a joint that is trying to bring in quality local music, or as Kyle said, one that is supporting any sort of local art. I was impressed with what Melanie Straley was able to do at Markell’s in its short time hosting shows, and I wish her the best with this venture.

Maybe you should give it a chance before wishing it ill.

About this blog

cutNscratch is The Roanoke Times music blog. Music reporter Tad Dickens enjoys pickin' and grinnin' and drummin', and he likes to write about music, too. He'll post plenty about local, regional and national music, but it won't be any fun at all if you don't jump in and have your say. So do it!
