Music video — ArtOfficial, playing “Voodoo Child” and “Rooftop” at Martin’s Downtown, from Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
Folks hanging out at Martin’s Downtown last night got a nice preview of what’s to come at FloydFest this year. ArtOfficial, a hip-hop/jazz-funk act out of Miami, Fla., played a couple of sets for the venue’s FloydFest SoundCheck. And the band was mighty good.
Cool, well-spit lyrics from two rappers combined with hot grooves from a drummer, bassist, keyboardist and reed man to make something really unique. Here, the band repurposes the hook from Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile,” then moves right into its own New Orleans-flavored “Rooftop.”
Combine the organic jazz-funk feel of this band with the straight-up turntables-and-microphone vibe of Roanoke’s own Poe Mack and TrueNoke crew, and hip-hop will be well represented at FloydFest in a couple of weeks.
