Music video — The Woody Nelsons, covering Deke Dickerson’s “Hatchet Man” at Martin’s Downtown last Sunday

Roanoke rockabilly cats The Woody Nelsons opened for Wayne “The Train” Hancock on Sunday night at Martin’s Downtown Bar & Grill. The trio turned in a cool set of rockabilly and jump-swing music.

Here, the band covers the Deke Dickerson Leiber & Stoller song “Hatchet Man.”

With B.B. Rierson smoothing the guitar, Tom Dorathy chunking the upright bass and Marty Young brushing up that snare drum, it’s a groove. This band is worth catching.

Thanks Tad. I hope the response was pretty good for Wayne Hancock. It kills me that I missed him, I really hope he gets around here again soon. And when the heck is someone gonna book Deke? He plays the east coast at least once a year, Richmond almost every time, and he has those Blacksburg/Floyd County roots. C’mon somebody-book Deke! He shot a man in Roanoke just to watch him die (see @:53 sec):

It was a good enough Sunday night turnout, compared to others I’ve seen in this town, Pete. I’ll bet he’ll be back. And here’s a +1 on bringing Dickerson to town!

While The Woody Nelson’s cover is closest to Deke’s version, this song was written by Leiber & Stoller. First recorded by The Robins, then The Coasters, all cool versions of a cool song!

    Thanks for the info, Marshall!
