Music video — At Big Lick Blues, Robert Randolph’s brother Marcus, relaxed, grooving and smashing the kit

Robert Randolph & the Family Band headlined an extra fun Big Lick Blues on Saturday night. Everyone knows that Randolph is the boss sacred steel player. But his brother Marcus is no slouch on pedal steel. No, not at all. He’s very good, as he showed on Saturday toward the end of the band’s set. In fact, practically everyone in the band switched instruments numerous times. Monsters, I tell ya!

But Marcus Randolph’s great strength, of course, is behind the kit. Here he is, pounding away during a jam portion of the band’s cover of an ancient standard, “If I Had My Way.” As you’ll hear, they were into some Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” by the time I started the video.

Turn the volume down on this one, because it nearly blew out my microphone (and then the battery crapped out, so this is all I got from this set). Hear and see M. Randolph grooving it up, and later, see R. Randolph get the crowd mesmerized.

About this blog

cutNscratch is The Roanoke Times music blog. Music reporter Tad Dickens enjoys pickin' and grinnin' and drummin', and he likes to write about music, too. He'll post plenty about local, regional and national music, but it won't be any fun at all if you don't jump in and have your say. So do it!
