Music video — James Hunnicutt performing “Too Late To Pray” at Mountainside Cafe last Friday

Singer/songwriter James Hunnicutt, out of Port Orchard, Wash., rolled into the Roanoke Valley with tourmates Filthy Still last Friday for sets at Mountainside Cafe — a joint that’s turning out to be a haven for Muddy Roots-style acts.

Hunnicutt did killer covers of Hank Williams, Faron Young and Patsy Cline songs — the wonderful falsetto is disarming, coming from this long-haired, tattooed guy. But he has plenty of strong originals, too. Here’s one of them, the basically frightening “Too Late To Pray.”

Lighting wasn’t what you’d want here, so we get a better look at a NASCAR dudes standee head, which gives the subject matter a little levity, imo.

Any place with that much yakking during the music can’t really be called a “haven.” Interesting tune, though …

Maybe you’re right, but my thought is that in a town that doesn’t much turn out for this kind of stuff (with rare exceptions including Larry and His Flask), to have a spot that will host it and take care of the performers is a good thing. Heaven? No. Haven? Probably.

About this blog

cutNscratch is The Roanoke Times music blog. Music reporter Tad Dickens enjoys pickin' and grinnin' and drummin', and he likes to write about music, too. He'll post plenty about local, regional and national music, but it won't be any fun at all if you don't jump in and have your say. So do it!
