Music video — William Walter and Dane Alderson, playing “When I Leave For California” at Martin’s on Wednesday night
It’s easy to take William Walter for granted sometimes. He’s always been good — a strong rhythm guitarist and powerful singer with a knack for writing good tunes. It’s just that most of the Charlottesville-based Walter’s Roanoke gigs happen at on Wednesday nights at Martin’s.
But that’s a good night to catch him, particularly when he brings along smoking young bass guitarist Dane Alderson, a native of Perth, Australia. Having heard Alderson on video, I knew he was good. And before the set, Walter was raving about him, saying that he “doesn’t play a wrong note.”
Sometimes, Alderson might play too many right notes, but he’s a young guy with chops out the wazoo. And in this loop-happy duo, that can be a good thing. In fact, some of his bass solos on Wednesday night were as hot as anything happening right now.
But he can lay back and and complement a strong melody, too. Walter wrote a good one called “When I Leave For California,” and here they are playing it. Nice stuff.
These days, Alderson has taken over the bass gig for Walter’s band, William Walter & Co. I’m interested to hear the full lineup with the new guy holding down the bass.
