Wow. I just saw Jill Sluss on WSLS talk about legal ownership of the “trademark” Festival in the Park. Are there any lawyers on that board? If so…I hope you have a crisis communication plan.

What will happen to the $100,000 EventZone got from the Taubman?

I have watched the coverage on WSLS, read the story on WDBJ7 and read the article here. It seems to me that the “leadership” at EventZone doesn’t really understand about branding and “owning” a name. Festival in the Park and St. Patrick’s Day are not OWNED by EventZone. They are a time of coming together as a community. I’d say whoever is running EventZone these days has missed the point.

How can EventZone claim to have those trademarks when those events, especially Festival in the Park, were in existence long before EventZone was formed?

Well, Scott, even that “press release” doesn’t tell the full story. I would suggest that EventZone in the future introduce left hand and right hand before it sends out anything. Because as you might see from my recent update of this story, the city has not cut its ties completely, as EventZone will continue to produce several activities including Festival in the Park.
