Pulaski-based rockers Aside Oceans celebrates the release of its third CD, “A Lesson in Architecture,” at a Saturday evening show at its hometown Bella Pizzeria. Also on the bill –  Madrone, The Woodgrains, Now and Then, Dallas Danger and Justin Linville.

It’s been a busy year for the band, which toured from Virginia all the way out west, with its last stop in Southern California, where it participated in the finals of the television show “Gimme The Gig,” with uber-producer Don Was. Aside Oceans frontman Bradley Steele said that even though his band did not win, the experience was a positive one, with Was telling the band that he was amazed with its songwriting. That’s high praise from a real cat in the industry.

Steele and his brother, guitarist Billy Steele, handle the bulk of the songwriting, with Billy doing the music and Bradley doing the vocals. Of its unique and creative [and to these ears, post-grunge] style, Steele said that feeling trumps the rules of the game.

“I feel like if you try to just write what you feel, you’re just going to be a better band and a better artist,” Steel said.  Otherwise, “you’re just working in a box.”

About this blog

cutNscratch is The Roanoke Times music blog. Music reporter Tad Dickens enjoys pickin' and grinnin' and drummin', and he likes to write about music, too. He'll post plenty about local, regional and national music, but it won't be any fun at all if you don't jump in and have your say. So do it!
