It will be a lucky Friday the 13th in September for folks who love country music icon Willie Nelson. The “Red Headed Stranger” brings his Willie Nelson & Family tour to Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre that night. His son, guitar hotshot Lukas Nelson, opens the show with his own band, Promise of the Real.
Nelson, who has cut tracks with everyone from Waylon Jennings to Snoop Lion (nee Dogg), last performed in Roanoke at the same venue, with Asleep at the Wheel, in February 2009. Previously, he had shared a Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium show with Bob Dylan in 2005. So, it’s rare enough to have Nelson in town. Show time is set for 7:30 p.m.
This reporter saw Nelson and family, with Lukas Nelson, not long after that Asleep at the Wheel gig, but in Bristol, Tenn. It was a field day with my pop, who shares love for the outlaw. With Willie Nelson, it’s always a freewheeling time, but I suggest getting to the show in time to hear Lukas Nelson, who really can play some guitar and is growing as a songwriter and singer who, it must be said, sounds a little like his old man.
