Sunday’s column: ‘Dano’ awards celebrate glaring stupidity

We are handing out a new award today, sponsored by yours truly.

It’s called the Dano, and it celebrates stupidity. The panel of judges (me) is an expert on this subject. Just ask my wife.

But I am not the only dimwit. In our gorgeous and somewhat isolated region, there is no shortage of idiocy, and that demands recognition.

So herewith I present the Dano Awards for 2009.

    Dan,

Are you calling the Burkholders stupid because they didn’t want to sell their land (while admitting the city and Carilion were pointing fingers at each other over the attempted land grab)?

I think the Burkholders were ones mistreated in this deal..
As for the rest of your awards..pretty darn accurate..lol

Bowers should get a “Dano” award each and every day of each and every week and month and year for being the biggest whiner creep ever in the history of Roanoke City government. Trinkle should get a “Dano” award for the dumbest council member to ever seek re-election to the Roanoke City Council for allowing Bowers to stand next to him this past week at his announcement that he intends to seek re-election. The entire City Council and Administration should get a “Dano” award for being the most incompetent morons ever in their entire handling of the Market Building maintenance and renovation fiasco over the past several years.

Merry Christmas to all and God Bless all incompetent moron idiot 2009 “Dano” award winners, may you start out the new year by remembering to put on clothes and brush your teeth before you leave your house!

    Dan,

Prior to 1995, when Virginia went from a “may-issue” to a “shall-issue” concealed handgun permit state, it was legal to carry concealed guns in restaurants.

    Dan,
If you want a weird land grab with eminent domain as the reasoning, research the cemetery in Chicago where Ohare wants to build a runway. It was a story on Fox News this morning, so you may not be interested but it is a touchy issue.

How about a late Dano award for the entity responsible for clearing the roads after a snow storm. Is it VDOT or the City? Driving around ohhh more than 48 hours after the storm and side streets are still caked.

Is this the lets just wait and see if it melts approach? Thank god the snow didn’t happen on a Tuesday and god forbid if it happens again.

More than willing to volunteer my time to clear the freakin roads after a snow storm. I’ll even pay for gas.

In Roanoke City VDOT should clear Interstate roads, such as 81 and 581. The City Public Works and Parks and Grounds crews should handle the rest. I am sure due to the large accumulations and the weekend factor that they are a little slower than usual in getting all non-major roads, but they will get them soon.

Uptheriver, this is one of the effects of budget cuts. Not as many people and not as much equipment. Services go downhill. This is life.

  9. Uptheriver | December 21, 2009 at 3:40 pm

gdad, I’m volunteering. Free service. But don’t worry, 65% of the roads have been paved as of 2p.m. today more than 48 hours after the snow stopped. Phew. Thank god it happens once a year. Weak.

I don’t accept budget cuts as an excuse for lack of service that tax payers pay for or put money into(? please correct me if I’m wrong).

    Hey “G”

services go town in this town because of poor management..

  11. gdad | December 22, 2009 at 7:46 am

Uptheriver, note that the workers primarily responsible for the interstate were from a PRIVATE company. And because they couldn’t handle it, state workers had to be pulled off other roads. Any perceived failure wasn’t just on the state.

Hey, tony, I wanted to get rid of Darlene years ago. And don’t try to tell me things operated any better under Ralphie, because they didn’t.

  13. Uptheriver | December 22, 2009 at 8:50 am

Wow, after reading the article in today’s paper about the 81 plowing debacle, that is completely inexcusable! I’m not bashing or blaming the state.

There were plenty and early predictions and warnings about when the storm was coming and how bad it was going to be. I have limited sympathy for people who insisted on getting on the road anyway.

I’m not sure where the “failure” lies, and that instant satisfaction for the stranded parties would be required for the effort to be considered a “success”. If you don’t want to get stranded in your car, stay home until the storm is over and the road is clear. Otherwise, face the consequences.
