Methadone instructions for Pulaski moms

It was horrible and tragic when a 3-year-old Pulaski boy died last September after drinking methadone left by his mom in a cough-syrup measuring up on the kitchen counter.

You would have thought that Lisa Hylton’s conviction last week in the death of her son, Trevor, would have reinforced the utter negligence of leaving that powerful narcotic lying around, where a child could get his hands on it.

Sadly, that’s not so. Another Pulaksi mom apparently did the same thing this week. WTF?

At least she took her little boy to the hospital and he survived.

Moms on methadone: don’t leave it lying around where your kids can get to it.

As if that needs to be said.

This was a tragedy… especially so because it was totally preventable.

Sadly, there are ways in which most parents slowly poison their kids every day, and don’t give it a second thought.

    - fried fast food meals
    - school lunches
    - soda and sugary drinks
    - refined sugar
    - second hand cigarette smoke
    - kerosene and propane heater fumes
    - sun exposure without sunscreen
    - radiation from cell phone usage

In and of themselves, most of these things seem innocent enough… but start piling them on daily and they will have a cumulative effect on a child’s health.

Combine those 2 stories with the one about the former Pulaski cop who got busted for meth…it makes my county look awful.

  3. Tom | July 9, 2010 at 1:52 pm

OJ, bad stuff happens everywhere. In a small pond, it just doesn’t get as diluted.

  4. Other John | July 9, 2010 at 2:04 pm

True enough Tom. Unfortunately there seems to just be a higher concentration of drug issues around here that have persisted since the major employers in furntirue and textiles abandoned the area for China and Mexico.

  5. Dan Casey | July 9, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Why is a 22-year-old doing methadone, for Gods sake? Because she got hooked on oxy at 19? It is such hardcore stuff. It’s more addictive than heroin — you can die from sudden methadone withdrawal.

  6. Kristen | July 9, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Appears methadone is the current fashionable drug, at least among those stupid enough to leave it laying around for their kids to find.

  7. Lynda K | July 9, 2010 at 2:29 pm

She probably started smoking pot at 12… doing cocaine at 15, meth at 17 and heroin at 19… It’s a long dark road…

  8. Marked Man (Mark) | July 9, 2010 at 2:47 pm

    The liberal way…

Let’s legalize all drugs, give everyone free health care, and then have fun treating this:

  9. Brendan | July 9, 2010 at 2:56 pm

I agree with you Lynda. CPS needs to start investigating the parents of obese children. Its nothing short of child abuse to do that to your kids. While it may not be intentional the effects are just as awful. Education and exercise is the key to stopping this problem. If people knew how they were killing their kids by constantly feed them this junk and not encouraging an active lifestyle maybe we would see a change in this trend.

…and don’t get me started on parents who smoke in the car with their kids!!

  10. Sandi Saunders | July 9, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Was it “prescribed” methadone or illegal methadone? That other case, where the poor baby died, I seem to recall was illegal methadone so there is obviously an illegal trade in methadone too. Listening to the story of the woman who was sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery in Iran last night was so awful sounding (especially AFTER they had already given her “90 lashes” and put her in prison), but I must say there are people in this nation who deserve to have a buggy whip taken to them. I realize that accidents happen, I have even had some, but this kind of ignorant negligence is just inexcusable to me. It is so very much harder for kids from such a home to come out ahead in this world.

    . . . . and forced sterilization for some people is wrong in what way . . . . ????

Probably no time before she has another child to put at risk – and be born addicted to everything under the sun.

  12. gdad | July 9, 2010 at 5:03 pm

#11 It’s wrong in every way imaginable. Virginia tried it already and it was a travesty.

I pulled up at a stop light on 419 last week, next to a lady who had 4 or 5 little kids, all unbuckled and climbing over the seats, while the windows were all rolled up and she was puffing away, filling the car with smoke…. all while talking on her cell phone! Mother of the year… that one!

Years ago methadone was used as a replacement drug for heroin users..That was an idea backed by government.Anyone who has ever done it knows its as powerful and addicting as morphine.
Perhaps these persons were perscribed this to get off other drugs.

Lynda, I bet you look good in maroon! I agree with you and Brendan, too many losers have precious babies to ruin.

Rick H, I cannot support “forced sterilization” thanks to the “Eugenics Scandals”, but I have long advocated free voluntary sterilization and still think it is the way to go on many levels and for many reasons.

  17. Lynda K | July 9, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Jack… Making an observation hardly qualifies as putting my nose in someone else’s business. If I had wanted to put my nose in, I would have gotten out of my car, opened her car doors, buckled the kids in their car seats, put out her cigarette and moved her cell phone to the trunk… but I controlled the urge.
Had she been in an accident and all those kids had died, I would have felt bad that I DIDN’T do that… but you are right… who am I to tell anyone they can’t put innocent children’s lives at risk… imagine the nerve!

“You seem like the type of Conservative that is always so quick to defend the rights of babies before they are born and just as quick to abandon their rights after.”

That George Carlin line is SO tired. For years, I’d heard all these same pro-abortion lines from liberals, and wondered where they came from. Then I heard a George Carlin monologue from the 90s and Bingo! That entire show sounded like a spoof. It had every single hackneyed line I’d ever heard. Then I realized. That one monologue delivered by a man, no doubt in a drug-induced state, was the original source of most of the pro-life “quips” you hear today.

  28. Lynda K | July 9, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Suzie… George Carlin also said, “Have you noticed that most of the women who are against abortion are women you wouldn’t want to f#@k in the first place? There’s such balance in nature”

From a guy who almost certainly thinks that the government should get to make laws about who can not get married and what a woman should do with the unborn fetus in her body and what that college kid smokes and who he sleeps with…

Congratulations. Hypocrisy you are doing it right.

  30. Kristen | July 10, 2010 at 7:29 am

    LyndaK! She shoots….she scores!

The problem with obese children is that they generally come from overweight families…how often do you see at the pool a heavy toddler being brought in by a couple of heavy parents? I don’t think it’s a function of abuse…I think it’s more a bad set of eating habits that the family has been accustomed to for generations. All these parents are doing is raising their kids the way they were raised. It takes the whole family being educated about smart food and exercise choices – there’s little point in encouraging the kids to make healthy choices when the people doing the grocery shopping keeps bringing home the soda and crap.

I have the opposite problem (for my kids, not me). I’d love to know what these kids are eating.

  31. Suzie | July 10, 2010 at 8:04 am

Lynda, the funny thing about Carlin’s quote is reality is just the opposite. Cosnervative women are generally very attractive while liberal women aren’t. The great Rush Limbaugh explained this phenomenon very well. He said good-looking women get what they want out of life through the process of natural selection while ugly women do not, and therefore have to enlist and coerce others (government) to get it for them.

And it’s true. People, men in particular, do things for attractive women, possibly in some distant hopes of mating with them. It
s also been shown that attractive people are often more intelligent, so they can get more things on their own. Uglies don’t get that same attention, fair or not. Sometimes they get laughed at. I think it explains why liberal women are often angry bitter shrews.

  32. Brendan | July 10, 2010 at 11:22 am

It is unintentional but really not any different. If a child had drug addict/alcoholic parents and the kids started showing up to school high or drunk, CPS would be called and the kid would be removed. These parents, in almost all cases, know that they are obese and that it is unhealthy as well as social/psychological issues that come with being obese. Yet not only do they not make the effort to stop the behavior in themselves but allow/encourage it to happen to their kids.

Its really sad that so many people see it as no big deal. This epidemic is going to have negative effects on our country for years to come.

  33. dave | July 10, 2010 at 12:37 pm

    Suzie

The “great” Limp Rishbaugh said “good looking women get what they want out
of life.” Yep. They get it by marrying rich, fat , bald addicts with
giant egos who pretend to be journalists and are too stupid to realize
that those babes wouldn’t give him the time of day except for all those
    piles of lush green money.

  34. Lynda K | July 10, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Suzie writes, “I think it explains why liberal women are often angry bitter shrews.”

Then, Suzie… you must certainly be a liberal in conservative’s clothing! Of all the “bitter shrews” on this blog, your acerbic style tops us all!

It’s like my Gramma always said…”Pretty is as pretty does.” If we were having a beauty contest based on blog comments alone, I’d hate to see where you would fare…

  35. Kristen | July 10, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Actually it’s gone beyond people thinking obesity isn’t a “big deal”. There’s this militant backlash to the public health message getting out regarding health, fitness, and the impact of obesity on rates of diabetes and heart disease (and more other illnesses than I can name). Overweight people are claiming discrimination.

Phys ed is mandatory everywhere I know of, kids get food group – used to be the pyramid, but I think that’s done – education and instruction from preschool on, we have DARE in schools…I think we have to expect that certain parents aren’t going to bother teaching their kids some of the important stuff (sex ed comes to mind) and hope that these children come to understand nutrition from other sources of information.

I find that analogy seldom works when folk’s positions are driven by emotion.

For that matter logic seldom works, but the logical comparison/connection of the analogy is nearly never recognized/acknowledged.

“woman should do with the unborn fetus in her body and what that college kid smokes and who he sleeps with”

Im pro choice dumb ass,and I dont care what a college kid smokes,or who they sleep with.I DO think marriage should be between a man and a woman.

23.”I think Jack is pro-alcohol this evening.”

Im sure anyone against the “food police” must be on something.
Really someone who equates Methadone with fried foods is on something heavier than alcohol. And those that agree with them even more so.

“The problem with obese children is that they generally come from overweight families’

Some people are naturally heavy. Its in their genes, yes they can be the best that they can be,but never be slim. But its none of our buisness either way!

26.”Well something is killing his brain cells, no doubt about it. Yes Jack, I am fat, call whomever you like”

Do you think society should “do something” about you? I mean since you are in favor of authorities being called on chubby kids.Does it apply to you too?

  39. VVArlock | July 10, 2010 at 6:26 pm

“Sometimes they get laughed at. I think it explains why liberal women are often angry bitter shrews.”

Says the most bitter, shrewiest person anyone on this blog can think of.

‘Its really sad that so many people see it as no big deal”

Its not only really sad that you do,but the fact you want authorities called on families with overweight kids shows your ignorance, dont you know it could be YOUR loved ones affected. You lefties think it will never be you.Like with the rationed healthcare you all love.Dont you know one day it will be you thats allowed to die.Ive said it before, what can you do with fool. They will vote in their own death.I dont care if you wanna die, good riddance, but dont make me die with you!

Maybe so, but it certainly doesn’t explain Ann Coulter. Oh wait — (s)he’s a man anyway, right? So (S)he doesn’t count. I hate it when I can answer my own questions.

  42. Art Hill | July 10, 2010 at 11:30 pm

For all of Limbaugh’s millions, his new bride is rather plain, but not every woman would put up with his Viagra-fueled trips to the Dominican Republic.

    You beat me to it.

gdad, @ #12, so you think this chick should just be able to procreate as she pleases and abuse and neglect the kids she has ????

a yes or no will suffice.

  44. Art Hill | July 11, 2010 at 1:44 am

    @43 Rick

You need a license to drive but anybody can have kids. Sucks, doesn’t it?
Like taking that license away from an octogenarian, let’s see you try and touch it.

P.S. Any guy not watching Spike right now is missing it.

Suzie is a trip. Not one most people care to take, but definitely a trip.

  48. gdad | July 11, 2010 at 9:43 pm

#43 Sorry, Rick H, that trick doesn’t work — mix two questions together and demand a simple yes or no.

Your original comment — the one I replied to — appeared to call for forced sterilization, an idea that has been promoted by all sorts from Hitler to the communist Chinese. And of course nowhere did I say she should be allowed to abuse kids.

    Thanks for playing.
