Florida men caught with $250,000 in stolen cargo get probation?
Here’s the story, by my colleague Duncan Adams. These guys pleaded guilty to possession of stolen Elizabeth Arden cosmetics (and a truck trailer) valued at $250,000. The theft occurred last November at Lawrence Transportation Systems in Botetourt County.
In all, four trailers were stolen. The other three, which had held cargo worth $795,000, were recovered empty in New Jersey. The crew that pleaded guilty yesterday were caught by the cops trying to repaint the still-full trailerĀ in Winchester.
One of those four guys owned the tractor the half-repainted trailer was hitched to. Looks like he’ll be able to buy it back from Virginia for $11,000.
So the total value of the heist was more than $1 million.
Probation, seriously? And they get to do it in Florida?

Are you sure these guys weren’t bankers or connected in some way to the financial services industry? On a smaller scale, it sounds like what those folks did to us and the punishments they received.
That’ll teach ‘em. Steal almost a milion dollars worth of stuff and get a slap on the wrist.
I read that story in the paper last night and I was stunned. This really is an outrage! No wonder the crime rates and recidivism rates are what they are. That is a big crime that got a virtual slap on the wrist for no good reason I can fathom.
Why not? The Governor of Fla. stole that many times over in defrauding
medicare and medicaid systems and instead of sending him to jail, they elected him! Go figure.
