Racists are having a hey day with Whitney Houstons’s death

By Grant Jedlinsky | The Roanoke Times

Now that Whitney Houston is dead, it’s party time on the white-power front.

We know this because lots of racist kooks are going nutso with the n-word over at — where else? — Fox News. Just read some of the more than 5,000 comments attached to Fox’s  story about the singer’s demise.

It appears that that Fox moderators are working overtime removing comments, lest the website’s advertisers realize the audience they’re reaching is a bunch of knuckle-headed nincompoops.

Can’t say I’m not surprised.

  4. Don’t you really mean “Can’t say I’m surprised” ? As in “I’m not surprised this is happening at Fox News”

    Comment by scott — February 13, 2012 @ 12:16 pm

  5. Mr. Casey

To make the accusation that fox news reaches primarily bigots is unfair, assanine rhetoric. All media outlets have teams of techs removing the same hate speak from their boards. If you wish to find hate in the political spectrum, you need to look toward the political left, and the traditional news outlets. There are many figures that have been attacked and belittled in the main stream media and your own paper. Conservatism teaches a love of freedom. The Sorios, Bill Ayers left continually promotes class warfare and spews hatred toward anyone who disagrees with them.

    Comment by Mark — February 13, 2012 @ 12:19 pm

  6. Sounds like the Dirty Tricks team at the DNC is working overtime. We already know 0bama’s minions flooded sites like Youtube in the last election with fake comments designed to promote an impression. This is what they do.

This blog whines all day about ‘anonymous’ posters, so they should be pointing out the commenters at FOX could be anybody.

    Comment by Suzie — February 13, 2012 @ 12:40 pm

  7. After only reading some of the comments it makes one sick to think we still in the time and age to have folks that think like that. We have to stand up to it wherever we see and hear it with no fear.

  8. #1 pammala, you really need to recognize when there’s no possible defense. If you can’t, then that says a lot about YOU.

Wow Dan. Racism is labeling a group of people and demeaning them in a negative way….

DID YOU EVEN READ WHAT YOU WROTE above? So to YOU, ALL foxnews watchers are racists. I thought you were better than that.

    Comment by Pistol Pete — February 13, 2012 @ 1:10 pm

  10. PP,

I never said that all fox news watchers are racists. Many of the website’s commentors certainly seem to be, though.

  11. I don’t care much for pop music, and therefore was not among Houston’s fan base. Still, she doesn’t deserve to be called by racist names.

There are eight previous comments so far on this blog as I write this. Only two of them decry racism.

  12. #9 If you were to just read some of the comments you might think differently unless you agree with them.
You will know them by their fruits and this clearly shows how fixed network fans the flames of hate.

    Comment by billhudson — February 13, 2012 @ 1:20 pm

  13. Yea Pete/….
I didn’t see where he said that at all.
    Clarify your response..
Ive seen this before when I posed a similar
    question on Facebook..
About how many people would be in favor
of naming a school after Booker T Washington.
The racists wasted no time chewing on that one.
And terribly sad that the objectivity flies right out the window
    ..and the screaming begins.

    Comment by Joe — February 13, 2012 @ 1:27 pm

  14. Mark: I dispute that. I read a bunch of left wing commentary, a bunch of which is way far out but nothing that comes close to the hatred and loathing of a person and their race which is expressed here. What were their reactions when Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning at age 27, Jim Morrison of drugs at age 27. Kurt Cobain, Del Shannon? What do they say of Demi Moore’s current problems? This is just pure, unadulterated hatred and racism, no matter how you try to rationalize it.

  17. People keep posting on Facebook: “RIP Whitney Houston”

I’m sure when the autopsy is completed it’ll be confirmed that she was already ripped.

  18. Dan
You lived near DC long enough to know that the Fox website is being targeted for this. You damn well know it too. But, if I were a lib, I’d do the same thing. Instead, I’ll ride that OWS train a little longer.

    Comment by terps — February 13, 2012 @ 2:43 pm

  19. So if I understand terps (and some others) correctly, they believe that liberal are writing the nasty racists things on the Fox news site to make conservative advocates of that website look bad.

Is that right? It’s those devious liberals, again?

If deviousness indeed is going on, why couldn’t it be conservatives posting the comments so they could then blame liberals for doing it?

“But” the reply would be “conservatives are not devious!”

Tell that to Karl Rove, who engineered the whole issue over John Kerry and his record for valor in Vietnam.

    Comment by Dan Casey — February 13, 2012 @ 2:54 pm

  20. Jack@2:19

If that was supposed to be funny, it didn’t pass the smell test. And if you’re trying to be a stand up comedian, I wouldn’t quit my day job if I were you.

    Comment by dave — February 13, 2012 @ 3:01 pm

  21. The “terps” crowd can yell dirty tricks all the want. The fact is, this is representative of a significant section of the viewers and listeners of the Faux “news” outlets. It’s the group that their commentators with their coded phrases and innuendoes appeals to in order to pump up their ratings.
And it is now and has been from its inception, despicable. So terps, go on back and ride that anti-OWS train. When the trestle collapses and the train falls into the gorge, here’s hoping you wake up in time to jump off.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 13, 2012 @ 3:20 pm

  23. John Wilburn

It wouldn’t have been funny then either. And it wouldn’t even have been funny if it was John Boehner who died, despite his reputation for never seeing a bar he didn’t like.

    Comment by dave — February 13, 2012 @ 3:40 pm

  24. Hey Dave
Are you the racist police? How do you know racists watch Fox news? I see black reporters and commentators on there just about every night and some of them(like Jaun Williams) are pretty liberal.
Your just used to stict liberal dogma eminating from CBS, ABC and NBC where black reporters and and commentators a few and far between.

    Comment by terps — February 13, 2012 @ 3:43 pm

  25. John w., but we’re not talking about a live white performer, we’re talking about a recently deceased black performer and that is about whom jack made his comments.

  28. Scott,
My point is the weight of the comment if it were Charlie Sheen who HAD DIED. That is the context and the “ripped” joke. Race had nothing to do with that part of it.

  29. Luke 6:42 The Message
Do you have the nerve to say, ‘Let me wash your face for you,’ when your own face is distorted by contempt? It’s this I-know-better-than-you mentality again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your own part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor.

Sometimes the fault we so quickly see in other people is just a reflection of our own heart.

I expect we’ll have to start judging you by your poster’s comments, right?

    Comment by Captain Adventure — February 13, 2012 @ 4:58 pm

I work hard to make sure all the comments with n-words never see the light of day.

  33. Dan,
Thanks for disclosing the Captain Adventure/Atterbury/Tracy thing. You don’t have any screening software for posters’ comments I take it. I am kind of curious what system you use to keep up with all of us. I give you credit for being a pretty good ringmaster.

    Comment by Dan Casey — February 13, 2012 @ 6:06 pm

  38. Jack, your joke was crass, no one said it was “racist”. Why are you making that out to be the issue?

    Comment by Sandi Saunders — February 13, 2012 @ 7:16 pm

  39. Tell that to Karl Rove, who engineered the whole issue over John Kerry and his record for valor in Vietnam.

Kerry was a fake. He wasn’t a hero. His ‘purple heart’ injuries were laughable. The ridiculously short amount of time he spent in Nam to accumulate those phony injuries was a joke. American voters needed to know that. God bless Karl Rove for informing them.

    Comment by Suzie — February 13, 2012 @ 7:27 pm

  40. Hey terps

Not theracist police. But I have eyes to see, ears to hear, and a brain to understand what I am seeing and hearing. And I don’t miss nor deny the obvious, as you Faux fans seem to do.

  41. Dan

How about the supreme irony of The Rovian attacks on Jophn Kerry, who actually served in Vietnam, was wounded, and has been praised by the men he led. And yet there were no Rovian attacks on the sainted GWB whose Daddy pulled strings to get him a National Guard spot assuring that he wouyldn’t have to go to Vietnam and who then proceeded to be awol from his Guard Duty a high percentage of the time while drinking, carousing,
using drugs and working in Republican political campaigns.

    Comment by gdad — February 14, 2012 @ 8:48 am

  45. #36 I have to agree with Sandi. I don;t see anybody anywhere on this blog alleging your remark was racist. Bad taste? That’s another matter.

    Comment by gdad — February 14, 2012 @ 8:51 am

  46. Then I apologize. The short conversation between John Wilburn and Scott Whitaker came across to me as implying otherwise.

    Apologies.

    Comment by Jack — February 14, 2012 @ 10:32 am

  47. #42 Exactly one comment, #25, suggested race. #28 was simply John W responding to that in your defense. You’re imagining things on the others. Time to don the tinfoil?

    Comment by gdad — February 14, 2012 @ 10:34 am

  48. Jack,
I don’t think it was racist at all, but left a void for imagined racism. We see a lot of that, unfortunately.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 14, 2012 @ 10:36 am

  49. #46 Jack, cool of you to apologize. I understand why you reacted that way though…I think it was easy to misunderstand. Now, I’ll weight in and say that I took your initial joke as more of a snide comment that I fully expect will end up being true. I did not find it offensive. I’m not overly moved by people who are extraordinarily successful (rich, beautiful, talented, whatever) dying due to idiocy. I’m just cold hearted that way.

    Comment by Miriam — February 14, 2012 @ 12:02 pm

  50. I think the sensitivities as seen in this blog are exctly why in 2012 this country still isn’t ready to have a serious discussion about race. It’s overdue, but a lot of other dialogues took time too… drugs, sex, etc. Political correctness may keep things tidy, but ultimately hinders gaining knowledge and really understanding.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 14, 2012 @ 1:07 pm

  51. I am quite perplexed by some of the media coverage of Whitney Houston’s death. In particular, WSLS.

They were posting some things about her on Facebook the other day and people were going on and on about how great Whitney Houston was and how she will be remembered for her beautiful music and how drug addiction is a disease and how nobody should say anything negative about her.

All of this just one week after WSLS crucified that Alleghany County school teacher as the lead story on the news about his DUI conviction.

I’m not saying what he did is right… absolutely not.

But on the one hand you’ve got a teacher, local, that people actually know in person, who makes one terrible mistake and you (WSLS) crucify him as the lead story on the news for it.

Then, on the other hand, you’ve got Whitney Houston, a habitual drug addict, and you hold her in high regards on some pedestal.

    Good grief.

    Sorry for rambling on.

    Comment by Jack — February 14, 2012 @ 1:32 pm

  52. Jack
WSLS email and they have facebook pages…

    Comment by Hillary — February 14, 2012 @ 6:17 pm

  53. John Wilburn, you have some pretty delicate “sensitivities” yourself when it is your beliefs, positions, and issues being “attacked”. No one comes to a discussion ready to listen when they feel insulted. Yourself included.

    Comment by Sandi Saunders — February 14, 2012 @ 7:07 pm

  54. Hi, Mr. Casey. Your bias as a media subsidized blog does no good for our country. Please be an advocate for the truth. My observations are that currently, your supporters are a minority that are, with apologies to Rush Limbaugh, “dittoheads”. Who am I? Hint: “Your alligator ideology is overriding your tadpole objectivity”.

    Comment by IP address — February 14, 2012 @ 8:11 pm

  55. What would we ever do without Sandi to tell us how we feel?

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 14, 2012 @ 8:15 pm

  56. Hi Mr. IP address. So far the IP address you’re posing from has seen messages here under the nicknames Tracy, Atterbury and Captain Adventure. Please pick one of these identities to post as in the future.

    Comment by Dan Casey — February 14, 2012 @ 8:39 pm

  57. So much for your “observations” IP. Why do you believe anyone cares who you are or how many identities you can get a post through under? Thinking for yourself is not as easy as we make it seem. Don’t hurt yourself.

    Comment by Sandi Saunders — February 14, 2012 @ 8:41 pm

  58. I think someone else would pick up on your hypocrisy John W, but I could be wrong. Like you haven’t ascribed “feelings” and “sensitivities” to others?

    Comment by Sandi Saunders — February 14, 2012 @ 8:43 pm

  59. Jack, this may be a foreign concept, but for most people, death, especially very recent and surprise death, takes away a lot of issues that the living do not get away with. Certainly, it might not be fair, but a DUI driver has the potential to hurt more people than themselves and addicts usually die alone even if surrounded by people. Whitney Houston was a troubled soul and an entertainer, not a role model like a coach. Those are just some of the differences that come to mind in the two cases. The old adage about not speaking ill of the dead came about for some reason. Blame Miss Manners or decency if you need a villain.

    Comment by Sandi Saunders — February 14, 2012 @ 8:48 pm

  60. Sandi, I think you’re just concerned that I posted outside of a gun thread, not being the polymath of issues that you are.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 14, 2012 @ 9:17 pm

  61. All of this just one week after WSLS crucified that Alleghany County school teacher as the lead story on the news about his DUI conviction.

But on the one hand you’ve got a teacher, local, that people actually know in person, who makes one terrible mistake and you (WSLS) crucify him as the lead story on the news for it.

Yeah, the left is the same with the child molestation issue. Michael Jackson molested boys, but since he was a liberal black, he was still an icon; whereas Joe Paterno was disgraced because a one-time employee may or may not have fondled a boy. Of course Paterno was a white Catholic Republican who coached a competitive warlike game.

    Comment by Suzie — February 14, 2012 @ 9:51 pm

  62. John Wilburn,
Don’t twist yourself into knots trying to explain anything to the leftards in here. They look for the smallest reference to anyone black so they can scream “racism”. By trivializing true racism, they are, themselves, the racists.

    Comment by Suzie — February 14, 2012 @ 9:56 pm

  63. #62 “Don’t twist yourself into knots trying to explain …”

    Said the pretzel woman.

    Comment by gdad — February 14, 2012 @ 10:44 pm

  64. Suzie, I’m here for fun and when a good gun thread coincides with a few days that I’m not kept out of the office all kinds of hours, I get to participate. Some of these people are hard core, though. Just the fact that you addressed me means I will likely catch some of the shrapnel that would otherwise be intended for you. I don’t mind you at all. You and gdad are similar characters; you both pop in, throw a few grenades at the other posters, and disappear for a while. The diversity of the posters here is bound to be what keeps us coming back.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 14, 2012 @ 11:28 pm

  65. #64 I do throw some grenades, John W, but unlike suzie I don’t make up lies or change what people say and then present it as fact. I also haven’t at least partly manufactured a fake personality, as suzie has done. Several people on the blog know exactly who I am, including at least two who figured it out from information I gave about myself.

    Comment by gdad — February 15, 2012 @ 8:58 am

  66. gdad, I give you credit for all of those and also for not pulling the pin on another at the end of the post. It’s certainly your choice whether or not to preserve “gdad” anonymity or use your, presumably, real name. Putting one’s name on their posts shows more credibility to me anyway.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 15, 2012 @ 10:31 am

  67. Hi, Mr. Casey. I met with several of my friends, namely Tracy, Captain Adventure, and IP address. Even though we don’t agree on all issues, we do agree on one important point. We agree that you should sincerely be commended for allowing legitimate posts that disagree with your own opinions. This is especially valued since, based on some of our experience, some of the larger liberal media blogs block any comments that respectfully disagree with their agenda, however valid and professionally written. I cite Media Matters and Huffington Post as two such entities.

We do have a second question however. We were wondering what a person’s “name” or IP address matters as long as the points were valid, respectful, and professionally posed. The concern among all of us is that some of the people that post here seem to be somewhat irrational. At least one of your other posters here along with yourself seems to be easily diverted by a person’s identity. Can you help us understand why you are diverting attention from the discussion issues for this? We sincerely would like to know.

    Comment by Atterbury — February 16, 2012 @ 9:09 pm

  68. Atterbury/Capt. Adventure/Tracy (ACAT) — This is a rule that goes way back to the beginnings of this blog. It’s to 1) respect posters’ desire to be anonymous if they choose to be and 2) to prevent them from using that grant of anonymity to play silly games by posting as multiple entities. It’s fine if you’re anonymous as one entity but not if you’re many.

    Comment by Dan Casey — February 16, 2012 @ 11:23 pm

  69. Hey Atterbury/Tracy/Captain Adventure/IP address,
I certainly won’t speak for Dan, but can’t give a lot of credence to anyone’s views even if the points are valid when they want multiple personalities. It’s like playing a certain set of values to one friend and a different set of values to another friend. When the two friends talk, neither believes the mutual friend any longer.

My beliefs don’t stack up in any typical combination, yours don’t have to either. Be yourself.

    Comment by John Wilburn — February 16, 2012 @ 11:30 pm

  70. whitney houston was a good talent, she certainly made her own decision to head down the wrong path. I will not glorify that, she brought it on herself. we all are responsible for our lives and the decisions we make…she knew drugs were ruining her, so she let them, no sympathy here.

fax news is so much more truthful than any other outlet, you have never watched it so your impotent opine means nothing. comments on a blog there are no worse there than on here danny, get a grip buddy you surely are losing it.

    Comment by pammala — February 17, 2012 @ 6:02 am

  71. Dan,

If you have multiple employees from a single company posting on this blog, they’d likely show up as the same IP address.

The courts are finally realizing in anti-piracy cases that an IP address does not equal a single person.

    You should do the same.

    Comment by Jack — February 17, 2012 @ 9:30 am

  72. Jack, you’re correct about the multiple IP address issue. That’s why when I handle this, I note that commentor X and commentor Y are posting from the same IP address.

I do this only in cases in which the syntax is so similar between the different nicknames that the chances are very high it’s the same person.

BTW, I have run across, and looked into, cases in which it seemed clear two different people were posting from the same IP address (like a husband and wife). Those I’ve left alone.
