Hmm, I wonder who these guys are supposed to represent.

Speaking of wooden nickels, the article linked below sort of puts to rest the meme that “drill baby drill” has anything to do with the price of oil. Read it and weep.

Dan, where did you take the picture. I remember driving by his place when I was a kid and my Mom, a fine Baptist woman, would utter obscenities under her breath…lol
Kristen and Sandi, I saw this link and thought of you both. In case you wanted to protest.

Or should I just shut up and go about my own

Anybody here a website guru who wants to donate a small amount of time to Gamut? Or charge us a tiny amount for truly minimal work? I’m having technical anger issues this morning.
The late, great Paul Harvey…talking about Secular Humanism.
Prescient.
“1965: ‘If I Were the Devil’ (Warning for a Nation) – Paul Harvey”
http://nation.foxnews.com/paul-harvey/2012/03/20/1965-if-i-were-devil-paul-harvey
“I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: “Do as you please.” “Do as you please.” To the young, I would whisper, “The Bible is a myth.” I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what is bad is good, and what is good is “square”.”
“And then, if I were the devil, I’d get organized. I’d infiltrate unions and urge more loafing and less work, because idle hands usually work for me.”
“If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine yound intellects but neglect to discipline emotions . . . let those run wild. I would designate an athiest to front for me before the highest courts in the land and I would get preachers to say “she’s right.””
“…I would evict God from the courthouse, and then from the school house, and then from the houses of Congress and then, in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and I would deify science because that way men would become smart enough to create super weapons but not wise enough to control them.”
“If I were the devil, I would take from those who have and I would give to those who wanted, until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.”
Paul Harvey…prophetic.
Well, I see where somebody up there wasn’t answering the prayers of a certain troll down here as far as Santorum and Illinois.
And I wonder why no right winger has posted the two latest polls concerning Virginia and the presidential election. Or the poll showing that voters don’t like Bobby McD or the GA nearly as much after their attacks on women.
@2 PP, a very old concept indeed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysistrata
I’m currently protesting any number of things in exactly the same manner. I’ll likely continue my fierce protest until circumstances change…haha
LC, the text attributed to Paul Harvey seems to vary somewhat from source-to-source…here are some other pertinent quotes (per the WorldNetDaily copyrighted version, 1999) that you didn’t include:
“I would get control of the media, so that every night I could pollute the
minds of every family member for my agenda;
I would dupe entire states into relying on gambling for their state revenue;
I would convince people that character is not an issue when it comes to
leadership;
I would convince the people that right and wrong are determined by a few who call themselves authorities and refer to their agendas as politically
correct;
I would dull the minds of Christians, and make them believe that prayer is
not important, and that faithfulness and obedience are optional;
I GUESS I WOULD LEAVE THINGS PRETTY MUCH THE WAY THEY ARE!”
LC, not sure about the use of “incentive” there. And could Harvey not spell “atheist” properly?
Ever since I was a young boy I’ve been leery of “prophets” and so-called “prophecy.” Dunno where that comes from (Matthew 7:15 perhaps?). However, I’ve decided to make an exception in the case of LC’s assertion that Paul Harvey is one.
What is so interesting about Paul Harvey’s prophecy is what is DOESN’T say.
Note that it DOESN’T say “I would give myself an unusual-sounding name like Barrack Obama.”
In other words, LC right here on this blog has confirmed, through Paul Harvey’s prophecy, that Barack Obama is NOT the devil, NOT the anti-Christ, etc. etc.
And that’s the REST of the story.
Thank you, Paul Harvey! And thanks also to your servant and idolmaker, LC!
WE COULD ALL LEARN FROM THE WOMEN OF TEXAS
Maybe something the Virginian women want to explore…
Gov Rick Perry’s Facebook page is drawing thousands of comments pointedly taking him to task for cutting off federal funds for women’s health programs because some clinics are operated by Planned Parenthood. Many of the comments are from women facetiously seeking advice on their menstrual periods, since he’s styled himself as an expert on women’s health.
“I would like your opinion since I can’t make medical decisions myself being a woman and all,’’ one woman wrote on Perry’s Facebook wall.
“Since you know so much about my healthcare, I was wondering if you could tell me how to handle my period since it is very heavy 4 days out of every month. What is the best product so I can have a productive day during these times or do you think I should just stay at home and call in sick or better yet quite my job since I can’t make my own decisions maybe I shouldn’t be working. What is your medical position on this issue?’’
The mocking comments signal considerable frustration over the Perry’s highly visible role in cutting off federal Medicaid money for the Texas Women’s Health Program.
Although Texas has previously accepted $31 million per year in federal funds for the program, Perry and state Republican lawmakers said they can no longer abide that money flowing through Planned Parenthood clinics in Texas, even though participating clinics don’t provide abortions.

That was your take away from that Dan? What’s interesting is what Paul Harvey DOES say. It has nothing to do with the Presidency, it’s much larger than that.
@Say What?
Here is the actual audio. Can’t dispute it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LJc8Mzg0C-c
Dan, I don’t think LC thinks he is the Anti-Christ. I know I don’t. From what I have studied in Revelation is that he will be from the Asian Continent. (Theologians recently are saying Turkey).
However, just like Europe has headed towards more Socialistic ways, and of course the US as well…the President’s agenda just makes it much easier for the Anti-Christ to take over and “look” like the leader of a “New World Order”.
I also don’t believe he literally thinks Harvey as a Biblical prophet.
Bill Perdue, I took the picture at the old Papa Joe’s building Thursday, on a tour of it more or less organized by me. It came from a scrapbook owned by his daughter, Maria Christofis.
For those of you who don’t know: Papa Joe’s was reputed to be the first topless bar in the Bible Belt. I also interviewed the most famous dancer there, “Pacific Shane” (she’s now a 64-year-old God-fearing grandmother) and the most recent owner of that building, which is slated for the wrecking ball.
Okay, so Robert Bales has a 1.3 million dollar judgment against him prior to ever being deployed on one of 4 combat missions. Doesn’t it seem strange to anyone else that he was even allowed into the military with his shakey financial background. Did they not think that the stress of a 1.3 million dollar judgment + killing people and being scared to death all the time was probably a horrific combination?
This is going to be one of those all too common situations where everyone is going to scratch their head and wonder why someone along the long road to these murders didn’t see them coming a mile away.
12
Dan,
Being cautious of people who claim to be “prophets” is a good thing, for sure. In hindsight, Paul Harvey’s words “seem” prescient. Harvey was just a smart guy, connecting the dots. Your attempt at mucking up the water is futile. It’s clear to see how right he was.
As UTR mentioned, I didn’t say anything about Obama. Although he IS a player in the game of deception. Coincidentally, nearly everything mentioned by Harvey has been supported and promoted by the Left.
Govt. Sanctioned Secular Humanism IS the religion of the “new” Age.
Satan doesn’t mind if Secular Humanists co-opt his gig .
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”
2 Timothy 4: 3-4
In other “backlash on the RW war on women” news….the Komen foundation continues to feel the hit from their ridiculous stance on PP. Donations WAY down (donations to PP way up!) they’re shuffling around their overpaid administators in an effort to stop the bleeding.
Maybe it’s time for Nancy Brinker and her overpaid cocktail party friends to get real jobs and stop fleecing the public in an effort to convince them that slapping a pink ribbon on bucket of chicken is “for the cure”. Komen is a perfect example of how a cause can turn into a business, and eventually a racket.
Let it be a lesson to those who would tamper with women’s rights. I wonder if Willard is paying attention?
PP, if the sources I reviewed while searching for Paul Harvey’s quotes were accurate, it appears he updated the text as recently as 1999; that version is where my quotes came from. I don’t dispute what he said in 1965, but it looks as though he felt the need to update it.
#16 Dan, once upon a time, way back when, an RT photographer photographed a topless wedding there. I think it was either Jack Gaking or Bob Phillips. Didn’t know they were going to tear the place down.
Debbie, I assume you are talking about the Christian view of “submission”. Liberal women fly off the handle at the word, but they forget to continue to read on. Verses 25-29 tell how husbands are to love their wives and the words are beautiful! Read all of it together, who needs Marriage Counseling when you have this?…:
22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—
No tolerance for Kirk Cameron?
Shocking…
“I was surprised, frankly, that people were surprised by the things that I’ve said,” he told host Ann Curry. “I have been consistent for 15 years as a Christian. I’m a Bible-believing Christian. What I would have thought was more newsworthy is if I had said something that contradicted the word of God, if I had contradicted my faith.”

“Are you encouraging people to HATE gay people?
What a STUPID question.
Scripture = Hate Speech
Pistol Pete, so what do you think about the 1st century Church and those Christians selling ALL their early possessions, helping the poor and sharing with each other as they had need. This is a serious question. That sounds a lot like socialism to me. I don’t think “the devil” prompted them to adopt socialism.
On a different topic – Have you ever spent any time in Europe? You make it sound like a terrible place. I just spent 10 days in Paris and Venice and things seemed to be going ok ? But maybe I’m a socialist?
If (I hope it’s WHEN) we get a “block this poster” option, I wonder if the people who get blocked will have a way to see just how many people have become sick of them?
“I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: “Do as you please.” “Do as you please.” To the young, I would whisper, “The Bible is a myth.” I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what is bad is good, and what is good is “square”.”
I sell this by extolling the importance of personal liberty, privacy and freedom from the government taking your money and telling you what to do. Can’t hurt to baptize dead people for show.
“And then, if I were the devil, I’d get organized. I’d infiltrate unions and urge more loafing and less work, because idle hands usually work for me.”
I would bet that I could manage this with the less than 15% of the work force represented by unions because obviously people are dumb enough to help me spread that meme.
“If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine yound intellects but neglect to discipline emotions . . . let those run wild. I would designate an athiest to front for me before the highest courts in the land and I would get preachers to say “she’s right.”” This can be accomplished by starving schools of money while demanding results that suit my plan. Making education a right wing football is genius.
“…I would evict God from the courthouse, and then from the school house, and then from the houses of Congress and then, in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and I would deify science because that way men would become smart enough to create super weapons but not wise enough to control them.” actually all I have to do is tell people like Lake Claytor that is what has happened and he does the work for me. Never even realizing that God cannot be evicted from any where by any one. Professing love and service while doubting the power of God. True genius
“If I were the devil, I would take from those who have and I would give to those who wanted, until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.” Oh for a nation with some ambition. Nothing kills ambition like begrudging the help you “offer”.
Paul Harvey…pathetic
OK, this should win Lady Gaga some right-wing fans:
“Muslims urged to return tickets for Lady Gaga’s Jakarta concert”
#8 And BTW, to Freepers and others of the wingnut persuasion who are disappointed that it appears Romney will get the Repub nomination, you can, in large part, thank that court ruling that you love so much that allows corporations and individuals to give zillions.
The comments on the link in post #1 are so entertaining.
Great cartoon Debbie #1!
Pistol Pete, why would “liberal” women need a sex strike? We did not marry backward, oppressive, ignorant men. We might be encouraging our sisters still in bondage to speak out and show their men a few facts.
Like here:
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/virginia-gop-delegates-wife-refused-to-have-sex-with-him-over-transvaginal-ultrasound-bill/
It’s Christians like many of you who drove me away from Christianity.
“No tolerance for Kirk Cameron?
Shocking…”
Does disagreement = intolerance now? Must anyone who disagrees with a Biblical world view shut up, or be labeled intolerant? Is that what things have come to?
@32 – No, that would be satan. Wink.
25
They did it of their own FREE will. They weren’t forced by the govt.
32
The ones who believe in the Bible?
33
Dan…obviously that was sarcasm, as there is no tolerance on the Left for opposing views, different opinions, etc.
But, surely you’ve heard the gnashing teeth of the Left with regards to Kirk Cameron’s statements? He is an Anti-Gay BIGOT, they say.
Miriam, they took that guy with that history and decided he was excellent sniper material.
More truth on ObamaCare.
“Why the doubling of Obamacare’s cost matters”
http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/why-doubling-obamacares-cost-matters/438761
“First, lets get rid of the 11-year window the CBO uses in their most recent report, and make a new ten-year window so we can have a apples-to-apples ten-year comparison. Full Obamacare implementation doesn’t start until 2014, so the CBO still hasn’t procured an estimate of what a full 10-years of Obamacare spending looks like. But let’s be generous to Obamacare’s defenders and assume that the spending in 2023 is the same as 2022. That would make the true, 2014-2023, 10-year cost of full Obamacare implementation around $2.02 trillion.”
OUCH.
“A CBO score with a price tag below $1 trillion was absolutely essential to getting Obamacare passed in the House. No price tag under $1 trillion, no Obamacare. That is why the bill was designed to delay implementation: TO PURPOSEFULLY HIDE THE TRUE COST.”
Purposefully…hiding…truth.
Sounds like intentional deception to me.
@34 UTR, are you accusing LC of being Satan?
Bill, INDIVIDUALS should give freely (tithe, support missions, hungry) on their own. Not the government’s Job.
Sandi, Liberal woman are having a sex strike-see the article I published. Poor whipped husbands! Only Liberal women would believe in killing a baby… so they are against the ultrasound bill.
Are you kidding Dan??? Look at the media blitz against Kirk and his religious beliefs!! If you guys would open your eyes, Christians don’t condemn the PERSON, we condemn the SIN. Jesus loves everyone, I am called to love everyone, but I don’t have to love an act.
I have a relative who is “Gay”. We hang out, chat, talk, exchange gifts. Do I hate him? NO.. Do I disagree with his lifestyle, Yes. He knows it too, but he knows I love him.
I thought this was very, very wonderful:

did their government force them to do it, I doubt it…when you give from your heart , thats when it does the most good, but if your dictatorboy wants(forces) us to share everything we own, thats marxism babe. huge diff
@38 – No, Where’s that from? I was telling Old Blue who was drove him away from Christianity. It wasn’t Christians, it was the master deceiver himself. There are many in Satan’s flock that are flat out posers. All Satan wants is for you to denounce God’s existstance. LC as evident with his posts on this blog here, that he is a firm believer in God.
To the subject of the thread.
Papa Joe’s ws the talk of Roanoke in the 60′s. Nightclub life here was virtually nonexistent except for what were called the “private” clubs.
There was no liquor by the drink, and places like Colonial Hills Club, The Candlelite Club, and The Black Angus were the way people got around the liquor issue. There they were hypocritically allowed to “brown bag” it as long as they kept the liquor under the table. Papa Joe’s was an openly raucous spot which everybody in town just HAD to go visit at least once just to see what it was like. And Papa Joe was continuously harrassed by the Va. ABC Board which was always taking him to court or raiding the place and trying to shut him down. The only problem was that they didn’t know just when to raid to avoid catching some of Roanoke’s most prominent citizens among the patrons! Stories about the strippers
who could make the tassels rotate in opposite directions were numerous and Papa Joe’s radio advertising was prominently featured on the Valley’s dominant stations. It was a different time and a different era. Colorful but I damn sure don’t miss it!
Do you really think that it’s not the role of government to help the poor and hungry?
I’m not advocating giving it all to the govt and I’ve never heard President Obama advocate that either. There you go again playing loosey goosey with the facts simply because you obviously hate Obama. You really should read what Jesus said about hate and forgiveness. Oh, and the parable about “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and the things that are to God’s to God.
Mentioning things like sin, salvation, justification, repentance, Jesus, Heaven and Hell can be daunting to a lot of folks (Understandably). Especially, when you read it straight from the Bible. A lot of folks these days don’t like that.
Many Americans don’t like the idea of “needing a Savior”.
They prefer “moralistic therapeutic deism”.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moralistic_therapeutic_deism
God is “good”. People are “good”. “Good” people go to heaven. That kinda stuff.
The REALITY of what scripture says…and what Jesus says (John 14:6) is too much for many in our “NEW-age”, Oprah-fied, “Have it YOUR way” society.
The focus is on ourselves, our lives getting better…what can Jesus do for me?
Instead of focusing on what Jesus has ALREADY DONE for us.
LC – Pistol Pete – Uptheriver – and others who spout their version of biblical teachings…
Your redefinition of the core of the Gospel message away from Jesus’ explicit announcement that his ministry was about “good news for the poor” is what’s most sinful. Acting piously and quoting scripture does not make you Christian. Behavior makes you Christian… lying and distorting facts to fit your world is not Christian. Denigrating others is not Christian. You often merge biblical values with your so-called “family values” – and then try to appear above the fray. You and your ilk are hypocrites – and we could all do without your pseudo-Christian values. Try a Christian chat blog so you can be amongst the “holier than thou” crowd.
Matthew 7:2 – For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Dear Stephanie Ogilvie,
I want the Hide Comments feature, yesterday! I fear this blog may drive me insane before we get it.
Sincerely,
Debbie
#22 Pete, I klnow those verses well. There is a diffrence in spouses “submitting” willingly and respecting each other, and gov’t officials treating women as 2nd class citizens.
We are not doormats and we will not go backwards.
Dave, I was too young to go to Papa Joe’s. I do remember asking my parents about pasties. Ha! I should have restrained my youthful curiosity. I actually met Papa Joe later and he was colorful! I worked for a guy, John Hagen, who was a Republican State congressman. He spent some time in prison for fencing stolen goods. He was another colorful fellow and friends with Papa Joe.
These were posted in the comments section of the cartoon in post #1.
Someone posted this first: “Republicans seem to have forgotten that women got the right to vote a while back. Time to remind them.”
Then someone posted this response: “And more’s the pity. In a moment of weakness men gave women the right to vote expecting appreciation and affection in return, but they’ve made us regret it ever since. Women are such an unappreciative lot; and their sense of entitlement defies description. Men were losing their grip even then. We were so naive.”
He seems to believe that we are supposed to bow down and kiss the feet of men for finally treating us as equals. It ain’t gonna happen!
Yes, we should indeed look to scripture for guidance:
James 2:14-26
New King James Version (NKJV)
Faith Without Works Is Dead
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[a] works, and I will show you my faith by my[b] works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?[c] 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”[d] And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Maria Christofis, Papa Joe’s daughter, took me through the old building last week.
The story, which is roughly 50 column inches (about 2.5 times the length of a typical column) runs Thursday with lots of great file and fresh pictures.
Maria has an amazing scrapbook of memories of the place. One of the news clips in it was about a lawsuit, filed by a dancer, against Papa Joe’s because the glue that held on the pasties made her boobs break out.
That’s not in the column that will run tomorrow. I could have easily written 100 inches on the place, and not a single bit of that story would have been boring!
I also tracked down “Pacific Shane,” the most famous dancer ever at Papa Joe’s. She’s a hoot.
Oh, the things that got left on the cutting-room floor!
I remember hearing the stories about Papa Joe’s. In the early 70′s we used to joke in high school about the less studious girls, “well there’s always Papa Joe’s” because it was reported that those chicks made out like bandits for showing some chestage. Kinda like Hooters servers do now…Only some things really change. Papa Joe was just ahead of his time.
ROMNEY HAILS JEB BUSH ENDORSEMENT AS ‘KEY MOMENT’ IN REPUBLICAN RACE
Much sought-after endorsement from Republican party favorite adds pressure on rival Rick Santorum to call it quits…
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/mar/21/mitt-romney-scores-jeb-bush-endorsement
Bill Perdue
John Hagen was a neighbor of mine in the late 60′s. He was in the House of Delegates. The Republicans were two days before their nominating convention where he was going to be nominated to move up and run for the State Senate when the news of his arrest for the fencing operation broke.
Hagen was involved in a number of less than savory business operations after that. There were also rumors of some big time gambln g and even a little bookie operation but none of that was ever proven and no case was ever made against him.
Hillary@8:13
It seems that none of these Republican candidates can ever manage to make
progress when something positive happens for them. It’s always one step forward and two steps backward. Romney managed to negate the effdect of that endorsement today when he chief campaign strategist gave an interview in which he said that all the things that Romney has had to say to try to get the nomnation by appealing to the Republican base will be forgotten in the general election which will be like starting all over. And then he capped it off by saying it would be just like an ETCH-A- SKETCH!.All of that stuff would just disappear and there would be a blank
slate. That will plague Romney from now to November and beyond.
“Kinda like Hooters servers do now..
The first-and-only time we went to Hooters our server had Kleenex stuffed in her “cleavage”. I’m not kidding.
“ROMNEY HAILS JEB BUSH ENDORSEMENT “
Jebbers for VP?
I’ve never been to a Hooters.
Is the food as awful as Buffalo Wild Wings?
“Is the food as awful as Buffalo Wild Wings?”
Probably, I was too busy laughing to pay attention.
#59 Art Hill – I don’t think he is giving any indication that he would be interested in VP. Probably wants to hold out until 2016 when the memory of his brother has faded somewhat… also there’s this:
Bush on Wednesday said the Republican nominee will have a long list of potential running mates, but argued the GOP would make a wise pick in the junior senator from Florida.
“There is a strong field to pick from, but Marco Rubio to me would be the best choice,” he said.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/21/who-does-jeb-bush-want-for-vice-president/
@Hilary
“Behavior Makes you a Christian” – Hmmm, I didn’t know Athiests who were just plain good people were Christians. I’ll write that down.
“Lying and Denigrating others” – First, What am I lying about? Facts would help. Second, who have I denigrated on this blog? Besides trying to get Sandi and Kristen fired up, I am not putting myself above others. I love every one of you one this blog, because I am suppose to. I don’t understand the anger when we use God’s word in defending our views. I am just sharing the #1 bestseller of all time, and use it as my Worldview.
@Sandi – The book of James rocks! I totally agree with those verses! Works should follow your open faith in Jesus Christ. Personally giving to the poor, reaching others with the Gospel, showing Christ’s love to everyone, missionaries to foreign lands, etc! God desires a relationship with us (faith) and our lives should aim to please him (works). We agree on something!
Never been to BWW. Hooters is like Famous Anthony’s, you will realize quickly that they are not famous for the food. But in all fairness, they used to have good and big burgers (garlic involved). We used to eat there a couple times a year if we were in the area, because we liked the burgers. I feel sorry for anyone who has to parade around in front of some scuzzy guys in such a skimpy outfit, but I do think those chicks make some bucks in tips. They are equally nice and friendly to ladies so they are also smart.
My hubby works with a young kid who has never been there but wants to go and his GF does not want him too. It is a running joke.
Dan? Food? Do they serve food at Hooters”. I always thought that most of the patrons never remembered anything that they ate. As long as the beer was cold and the atmosphere was—–well, the atmosphere!
60.”I’ve never been to a Hooters.
Is the food as awful as Buffalo Wild Wings?”
Worse. Also, I never could get into chicken wings regardless of who prepares them. It just seems like a meatless framework to soak up sauce or breading. I do not plan to go to Buffalo Wild Wings to try their wings either, at least not until they drop their anti-rights “no guns” policy.
OMG. Worse than Buffalo Wild Wings? I didn’t think that was possible. Compared to BWW, Taco Bell is a gourmet restaurant.
Hey Terps, you care to weigh in on this one?
I’m not a big wings fan, but I’ve had some great ones at AllSports Cafe and The Coffee Pot.
The breakfast at Famous As is a pretty good deal.
The noise factor at BWW is enough to keep me from ever going there again. When I go to dinner I like to be able to talk to the person across the table from me and hear what they are saying. At BWW all you get is a constant roar. You either have to shout or know sign language.
My friends who are wing connoisseurs tell me that Sharkey’s in Blacksburg has good wings. I can vouch for their burgers, but they’re second to Mike’s Grill in my book.
You guys in Roanoke have the best steaks at Coach and Four.

The article called Idiot Boy an arrogant incompetent negotiator and liar. WOW.
If one of my conservative friends in here brought this up, forgive me. Rest assured none of the liberal pukes brought it up. They would like to pretend it didn’t exist.
The Denver Broncos made a bonehead decision. Every talking head thinks they’re going to land in the Super Bowl. I just don’t see it.
They said the same thing about Favre in Minnesota. No over-the-hill QB is going to lead a new team to the SB. I don’t care how great he was. In a year or two, after Manning gets injured, then what do the Broncos have? They got rid of the most popular NFL player, and the heart-and-soul of the city and the locker room.
And paid too much for a has-been.
#41 But I’ve been told that all public schools brainwash their students in liberalism.
Hooters is grotesque.
If you leftwingers really gave a crap about women, you wouldn’t darken the door at Hooters.
Lake Clayotr, your endless recitation of right-wing wingnut talking points no matter how idiotic they are is getting really, really tiresome. It would be just as tiresome if a liberal did nothing but link to far left fringe stuff. Fortunately, no liberal on this blog is that boring.
#63 Pistol Pete posted, “I didn’t know Athiests who were just plain good people were Christians.” What a narrow little world you live in…

Really Pistol Pete, I know “atheists” who present better Christian values than you and many others like you on this blog – pseudo-Christians…or better yet, convenient Christians.
dave is right. The noise is great at BWW. The video screens are great, too (but you can’t hear them over all the noise).
The food is not great. It is dreadful.
It’s not like Tebow was going to lead them to the Super Bowl or anything.
BTW, great column on Papa Joe. I was a tad too young to visit the place but the rumors were legend.
Glad to see Denver finally realized that Tebow sucked. As one sportswriter said, “you could time his release with a sundial.” When you have to alter your offense to cover a 45% completion rate you’re wasting your money.
Art, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun to do. And, it’s always fun working with photographer Stephanie Klein-Davis. She’s the one who was with me back in 94, up on Warm Springs Mountain, when Pat Robertson’s bodyguard pulled a 9 mm on us, the jerk.
“It was a lot of fun to do”
I’d like to see what was “left on the cutting-room floor.”
FWIW, someone else liked the column, too. Kudos to Stephanie as well.

You’re welcome, John Wilburn.
#73.
Let’s start off with the funniest part. You linking to an article that starts with “President Obama had just arrived home, walking across Lafayette Square after attending Sunday services with his family at St. John’s Church.”
I’ll just let that one soak in a little bit.
Secondly, the article didn’t really say that he was arrogant, an idiot, or a liar.
So I’m going to call you slutty liar suzie (since it’s ok to call people sluts with no factual basis. The liar part is factual.)
What the article said is with negotiations, the Republicans offered $800 billion in new revenue. The White House was close to taking that deal when the gang of six introduced a new plan that had $2 trillion in new revenue.
So not wanting to look like he had just worked his ass off for an inch when bipartisan senators introduced a mile, he returns to negotiations saying, ‘We are just kicking a can. These guys are hitting a home run. We need to make this deal a little bigger.’
So the president bumps that number up to $1.2 trillion in new revenue. Yes, a 50% increase. But only 60% of what the gang of six came out with (so an attempt to compromise the two plans… weighing more on the smaller of the two plans.)
Boehner says no. Actually, he says no and then says nothing because he stops talking to the president for a bit.
Finally when Obama realizes that partisan politics on both sides of the aisle are clashing into a pile of crap and Americans just want to see a deal, he calls up Boehner and says I’ll take your last offer.
That’s an important thing. There was an offer on the table by the Republicans. Initially Obama was toying with numbers and trying to propose changes and negotiate.
But not anymore. The president was willing to take the GOP offer.
And Boehner said “Mr. President, we don’t have time to reopen these negotiations.”
What the?!? What negotiations.
There is no need for negotiations.
The idiot version (Events in chronological order… picking up towards the end of negotiations):
(1) GOP wanted 0.8
(2) The Democrats wanted 0.8 with caveats
(3) The gang of six wants 2.0
(4) Obama wants 1.2
(5) Republicans say No
(6) Obama wants 0.8
(7) GOP says no
(8) Everybody is scratching their head wondering why negotiations collapsed when Obama, quite literally, caved.
(9) Ohh… I see. Obama just showed that all the hard work was worthless anyway because Boehner can’t control his own caucus.
Despite efforts from level headed politicians [who, still played politics in pointing fingers after the fact] Congress did what they usually do and kicked the can down the road. Proving that both the 2008 and 2010 elections failed to bring the change to Washington that both victorious parties wanted and campaigned on.
The funny part:
Obama was working with senators and representatives during this whole process. And even when his own numbers started to tank, they were still better than the guys he was negotiating with.
I’ve nver been to Hooter’s or BWW, but I do love the wings at AllSports Cafe. I love their Daytona sauce.
I guess the Jets will have QB better than Broadway Joe ever was and more of a ladies’ man as well. The difference is Tea Party Tim will attract the nice accomplished women like Amanda Pflugrad, whereas Joe got the slutty Sandra Fluke types.
It will be interesting to see what a godly man can do for a godless city.
@47- Hillary, I spout no biblical teachings of my own nor do I ever post with biblical references on this blog. I have no judged anyone on this post either. You’re getting a little hot handed there speaking of hypocrites.
From an article in the paper today about River Laker. His reason for the strip act at 202 Market. I find his comment ridiculous.
“While being ‘sold’ I disrobed … to draw attention to the all-too-uncomfortable parallels between the event and the unsavory slave trade that, unfortunately, is part of the history of the western world.”
I read the article about River Laker suing the city, and just had to shake my head. He should be thankful he still has a job with the city after his stunt, and should have accepted the reprimand for posting personal videos to the City’s social media sites, after being told not to. The idea that he’d accept a severence package to quit? What a db. I’d have fired him the day following his little stunt once news of it became public knowledge. He is not the sort of person I’d want being the public face of my company.
47
Hillary,
You didnt really say anything to dispute my post (46). You don’t like what I said. So what? You helped make my point.
You’re as guilty as anyone of the accusations you made. Stop judging.

More truth on ObamaCare.
“Obamacare: It’s a big, disastrous deal”
“In a 2010 column titled “Obamacare’s unkeepable promises,” I compiled the top Obamacare lies that the president and other Democrats deployed. As I’ve said before, we did not get here because of simple distortions or exaggerations or even misrepresentations. Obamacare is the product of statements known by their makers to be untrue and meant to deceive – lies. Two years after the president signed his health care takeover into law, the enormity of those lies continues to grow.”

LIE.

The best wings in Roanoke I’ve had are at the brambleton deli.
This past weekend I finally made it to Wild Wing Cafe in Charlottesville to watch the VCU/Indiana game, and had their hottest wings (Braveheart) and they literally made me cry. I was told the best thing to do is just eat them fast… which I did. 10 minutes later, all was well. They have way more varieties of sauces, and unlike BWW, I don’t feel like i have just eaten a giant bucket of salt.

I love the beginning of the second link you cited. I’ll quote:

I had no idea there was an organization, right here in Va, who gets to decide who the Christians are. How does that work? Is there a rigorous process like the council of Nicea, or is it just picking some political or social issue with which you disagree and then claiming that those who don’t agree aren’t Christian.
To me, it looks like latter.
96
Oh, Dan…Jesus wasn’t a Christian…he was a Jew.
Oh get over yourself Pistol Pete, no one is “denigrating” you any more than you denigrate others. THAT is what she was pointing out. You dare to pretend you are a martyr? How blasphemous. No one is challenging you because you claim to be religious, we challenge you because, like Lake Claytor and Suzie, your claims do not match your words and insults. You do not have to accept it for it to be true. It is proven fact and she nailed you with the truth.
Hillary Rocks!
“When I go to dinner I like to be able to talk to the person across the table from me and hear what they are saying. At BWW all you get is a constant roar. You either have to shout or know sign language.”

96.”Tim Tebow is finished. Let us speak no more of Tebowmania. A fine human being he may be. What he is NOT, is an NFL quarterback.”
If it makes you feel any better, I never did speak of “Tebowmania”. I remember him for those two wierd basketball shot-like touchdown passes while the QB at Florida and for his religious sideshow during his brief NFL career. He gets a lot of credit for being a good guy, but I refuse to exaggerate his playing ability because of it.
Dan, today’s progressives want people like you who worship them (Obama) instead of God. Maybe you should read the rest of the Article.
Also, no mention of the first link. Can’t argue against it?
Pistol Pete,
The Truth is an “insult” to a charlatan like Sandi.
@96 and @111 – As a adamant Jets fan, have you ever seen Mark Sanchez? Tebow isn’t any where near done yet. I’m still hoping Fireman Ed gets a shot at QB as well. Sanchez is garbage.
OJ, I completely missed that article. HE’S the one suing? The 202 people should have gone after them for the money they lost over his stupid little stunt. I’m embarrassed that he still has a job in the public sector.
I don’t find him entertaining, witty,or particularly creative. He strikes me as a lonely attention-grubber who prefers to keep himself in the limelight in any way possible.
If you want to chat, BWs isn’t the place. If you want to eat Thai Spice wings, have a beer and watch some basketball with your friends and not talk much, it’s a great place.
As a Giants fan I entertain a deep and profound dislike for the Jets, especially in their current incarnation headed up by that blather loudmouthed nut Rex Ryan. Mark Sanchez ain’t much, but he merits better than Ryan…as does Tebow. You won’t find Tebow being lionized over his religious demonstrations up there though…people in the North East are all about performance…they’d dig a Santerian if he could get them to the playoffs.
How about them Saints? Crushed. I was a little surprised at how bad Goodell put them smackdown on them.
JohnW, I loved those jump spike passes. I thought he was an entertaining college QB.

I almost spit coffee all over the computer screen when I read this.

@115 – The NO Saints crime was bad. The cover up was worse. The NFL does not like their image tainted, they are quite cut-throat. I bet they want him to rat out others as well.
LC, so which “book” is being referred to in Revelation? John wrote it, apparently from Patmos somewhere around 70-95 AD. The Bible as we know it wasn’t canonized until hundreds of years later, following much dispute over what to include and what to omit…Revelation itself being one of those disputed portions!
And why did you choose to ignore the verse before that one Lake Claytor? Adding to it as often as you do, no wonder.
“18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.
Revelation 22:18-19
That is not proof that the entire Bible is the “infallible Word of God”.
Show your own ignorance a little more why don’t you? Unless God, literally dictated the Bible (and we know He did not), it cannot be the “infallible Word of God” as it is delivered, interpreted, and preserved by man. Inspired by God, yes, I believe that. “Infallible Word of God”, no, I do not believe that. And I do not believe the Bible instructs us to belief it either. What about the Gospels that it is well known were written by men? Paul’s letters for instance? How can Paul’s letters to the churches be “the infallible Word of God”?
I clicked on the first link, that is why I asked him to show me where it says in the Bible that “to be a Christian one must believe that the Bible is the only infallible Word of God”?
All Scripture is God Breathed…2 Timothy 3:16
Same ole stuff… Interpret the Bible how MAN wants it to fit his life. Just like the left does with the Constitution. Interpret it to fit today, not the founding father’s intent.
“The manuscript evidence for the New Testament is also dramatic, with nearly 25,000 ancient manuscripts discovered and archived so far, at least 5,600 of which are copies and fragments in the original Greek. Some manuscript texts date to the early second and third centuries, with the time between the original autographs and our earliest existing fragment being a remarkably short 40-60 years.
Interestingly, this manuscript evidence far surpasses the manuscript reliability of other ancient writings that we trust as authentic every day. Look at these comparisons: Julius Caesar’s The Gallic Wars (10 manuscripts remain, with the earliest one dating to 1,000 years after the original autograph); Pliny the Younger’s Natural History (7 manuscripts; 750 years elapsed); Thucydides’ History (8 manuscripts; 1,300 years elapsed); Herodotus’ History (8 manuscripts; 1,350 years elapsed); Plato (7 manuscripts; 1,300 years); and Tacitus’ Annals (20 manuscripts; 1,000 years).”

So do you believe and follow every word in the bible in its entirety, including the Old Testament?
Before the New testament, The Old testament Law was there for people to follow and they couldnt..therefore God Punished.
Did God punish and chasten his people when they got out of hand? Yes! He had to because Christ hadn’t come yet to take the punishment for our sins. Did he still love his people? Yes
Did my Dad do the same to me? Did he spank when I disobeyed – Yes. Did he love me? Yes.
God’s Wrath was shown in the New Testament as well…look at what he did to his Son for the rest of us.
Pistol Pete, if you are interpreting the bible in a literal fashion, then,
Genesis 6:2 – “The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives.”
the key word, “sons” puzzles me. I thought Jesus was “God’s _Only_ Begotten Son”. Doesn’t this put the status of Jesus in question?
“The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives”
Hillary, I like too, the inference that the women are like goods on a supermarket shelf. I love those “every word is true” arguments, they always end in some kind of smoke screen to change the subject.
Thanks for pointing that out to me Hilary..
I see you like to pick and choose the bible, but please read like most people SHOULD the verses before and after 6:2 in CONTEXT.
The theme of Chapter 6 verses 1-8 are titled: “Wickedness in the World”
So verse 2 describes the wickedness in the world during that time.
Genesis 6
Wickedness in the World
1 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

Go ahead and GOOGLE some more verses that “contradict” themselves (whatever!), and I will try to put them in context for you.
By the Way, “Sons of God” means in terms of ..We are all God’s Children, since he created everything and everyone in the beginning.
All well and good, but you still have not offered anything from the Bible that says “to be a Christian one must believe that the Bible is the only infallible Word of God”. I’ll wait.
Pistol Pete, do you not think it is more than a little hypocritical to pick and choose verses that suit your POV and then criticize someone else for the same offense? How does that work in your mind?
117. LC are you saying your cite is Biblical in 94?
PP, please tell us more about the Nephilim (v 4)…they were giants who were on the earth before and after the flood (see Numbers 13). Did the writer of Genesis just forget to mention that they were on the ark with Noah and his family, or how did they survive? And why does it say they were “sons of God and daughters of humans?” (also v4)
hard to believe dan did not know that Jesus was Jewish….what planet are you from dan?
132. PP, I don’t think so. the Son’s of God in you reference were not human, but rather fallen angels. The Nephilim were the children of the fallen angels and humans resulting in giants (Goliath).
117. Leak Claytor, thank you for reading, now you have a better understanding of the Affordable Care Act and can dtop posting rubbish.
Pistol Pete – you did not answer the underlying question I posed to you @129
“The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives.”
the key word, “sons” puzzles me. I thought Jesus was “God’s _Only_ Begotten_Son”.
Doesn’t this put the status of Jesus in question?
This question has nothing to do with “Wickedness in the World” but a clarification of “only begotten Son”.
another favorite of mine:
“Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. Numbers 31:17-18
What happened to the commandment, ” thou shalt not kill”?
I don’t have to google anything – I have actually read, and continue to read [from front to back, which is tortuous to say the least - especially the Old Testament] and write down those passages/verses/psalms that are contradictory to what is taught by organized religion. Reading different versions by different religions – or even different publication dates – is also a mind bending experience… Watching the “Christians” try to reconcile what is written and what they preach is like watching dough in a pretzel factory…
IMHO the teaching of the man named Jesus, like Ghandi and all other “peacekeepers” should be the model, not the “man-made” strictures implemented by religious zealots and hijacked for their own agendas then placed in the bible as the “word of God”.
I do not post to ridicule your beliefs, they are yours, but it is disingenuous, to say the least, to foster them on others…
Anyone else note the irony that we never even made it out of GENESIS, the FIRST book of the Bible and the story of creation, before we were wicked and in need of destroying? Clearly we are not God’s best work.
Dan knew Jesus was born a Jew, but to say Jesus was a Jew is to say God is a flower. Jesus was so much more than just a man or a Jew. Not of course that his own people believe he was the Messiah, but to say Jesus was a Jew, Jesus was a Jewish Carpenter or some other simplistic label is close to blasphemy if you proclaim to be a Christian.
@140 – Can’t we thank Adam and Eve and their betrayal on that for corrupting it all?
There is no God, no heaven, no hell, no streets of gold, no land of milk and honey. OK, check that. Morton’s Apiary and Dairy is a milk-and-honey place, but the rest of it is all made up.
“Did the writer of Genesis just forget to mention that they were on the ark with Noah and his family, or how did they survive?”
I asked Suzie to explain the story of Noah’s Ark using 100% logig once and got no reply. I don’t demand replies, but I really do want to know how the Sword-of-the-Lord crowd reconciles it.
@143 – That’s what they want you to believe.
Someone told me once that the dinosaurs were extinct because they weren’t on the Ark. I insulted them mightily by laughing along with the joke, until I realized they were serious.
Saintbridge, as Lake Claytor will assure you, I cannot be a Christian. I consider myself a deist and I agree there is no “streets of gold, no land of milk and honey”. All of that was man’s projection IMO. I believe Jesus and the main prophets of the Bible existed and for the most part passed their revealed theology and understanding on, I believe Muhammad was also a prophet of God and taught what God revealed to him. Much of the OT law and fear mongering was to control people not reveal God. Much of what we have today is the same. I do believe in a Heaven/Hell decision and I think there is a final judgement coming for us all. Otherwise there is no point at all to this place and that is just not a bearable thought for me. You cannot create something so unique and wondrous only to be petty, simple, materialistic and mean like people are.
140 – Sandi, I totally agree. Sin resulted in the decision by Eve and Adam. Before that, God made us perfect, but gave us free will and so goes the Fall of Man.
139- I thought I answered, but the world was Evil after the Garden, and nowhere in the text does it say ‘The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives…..(Because it was right?????) No way! —This last part was never stated. It only states this is what they were doing, and pointing out their sin. Just like Sodom and Gomorrah’s sin was rampant and a Just God destroyed it.
I see that my attempts to convince you all otherwise fall on deaf ears, but that is OK. What I see as trying witness and explain my side, is seen as Pushing myself on others.
If I am wrong about my beliefs, and when we die its all over for us..then I guess we will all be just eaten by the worms.
But if I am right….
http://www.areyouagoodperson.org/
John, God doesn’t need logic. Parting of the Red Sea?, Feeding the 5000, Healing of Lazarus etc.? God can do what he wants.
@144 – Don’t forget that the Noah’s ark is also in the Qu’ran.
Dang.. .and they say atheists try to “push” their ideas.
Worm food Pistol Pete… but you won’t know, so don’t worry too much about it.
You should, however, be a decent person and live peacefully and honestly with those around you. It will enrich your life and make it better place for everyone.
Pistol Pete, saying “I see you like to pick and choose the bible”, among other comments, is not “witnessing”, it is judging. There is a difference and you know it. Do you believe you are a “good person”? Do you believe you have any right to judge whether other people are?
Utr, there are several stories, including the story of a mighty flood, that are represented in the religious or cultural fokelore of populations world-wide.
http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/flood-myths.html
I think it’s interesting that people separated by oceans and thousands of miles had such similar stories without being able to compare notes. I think it means that at some point…there was a big flood. The animals 2 by 2 part, I’m not as convinced of.
There is no God, no heaven, no hell, no streets of gold, no land of milk and honey. OK, check that. Morton’s Apiary and Dairy is a milk-and-honey place, but the rest of it is all made up.
The stars and moon landing were all made up, too. As are quasars, black holes, and the Theory of Special Relativity.
In Saintbridge’s world, anything that is more than two feet in front of his face is “made up”. We are dealing with very literal and concrete thinkers here, folks.
149.”John, God doesn’t need logic.”
Yep, and logic doesn’t need God.
What I’m really asking is how grounded you are in in the separation of faith and reason in your own mind. I know many folks who are “into” religion and want to enrich their lives with things from it, but I also know folks who think every act as described in the Bible was a very literal occurance and that our mere mortal mind simply haven’t, or haven’t been allowed by God, to comprehend the bridge between the limits of today’s science and understanding and what seems supernatural.
I do believe in a Heaven/Hell decision and I think there is a final judgement coming for us all.
Guess where people who want to kill little babies go.
“If I am wrong about my beliefs, and when we die its all over for us..then I guess we will all be just eaten by the worms.
But if I am right….”
Pistol Pete, I like you. You stand for what you believe in. Having faith is not necessarily an insurance policy. If you’re right, you, Suzie, lake Claytor, and pammala will all share heaven together, but if you are wrong, you will have cheated yourself out of getting the most out of your own existence by never having thrown the shackles off of your mind. You’re playing a game of “Let’s Make a Deal” and don’t even know it.
7 Lake,
Excellent and prophetic piece by Paul Harvey. He couldn’t have known it would unfold just that way.
And I would add to that, if someone wanted to tear down the United States off it’s perch as the greatest country in the world, what would they do anything different from what 0bama and the far-left are doing?:
1 Reducing our military might
2. Drowning us in debt
3. Taking away incentive to work (3 years of unemployment benefits)
4. Demeaning human life by making it facelesss (abortion; opposition to sonograms)
5. Establishing a lockstep mainstream media
6. Persecuting religions; making government the “church”
7. Confiscating wealth of the producers.
@Sandi -”I do believe in a Heaven/Hell decision and I think there is a final judgement coming for us all. Otherwise there is no point at all to this place and that is just not a bearable thought for me. You cannot create something so unique and wondrous only to be petty, simple, materialistic and mean like people are.”
Thanks for sharing this Sandi, I think while I try too hard sometimes and then anger those on this blog…my goal is to hear everyone make a profession of faith like that. I try to follow the Great Commission, but sometimes come off wrong.
Matthew 28:19-20
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
146.”Someone told me once that the dinosaurs were extinct because they weren’t on the Ark. I insulted them mightily by laughing along with the joke, until I realized they were serious.”
I went to a private religious school and we had Chapel once a week. They were sort-of affiliated with an Assembly of God church. On more occasions than one over the years, a teacher, who would conduct the service would break out speaking in tongues. That was bizarre enough, but then, another teacher spoke up as she said she was given the interpretation from God what the other one just said. I sincerely believe they were tellign the truth as they believed it, but WHOA. Most of us were sitting there thinking what the freak just happened.”
Had we laughed, we would have at the very least, gotten a week’s detention.
I know a student once changed schools and left under questionable circumstanses shortly after questioning the virgin birth account. To go to the school, the student or at least one parent had to be a “Christian.” I could fill a thread just with stories from that place.
Here’s something no one’s ever been able to answer for me:
If sin did not exist before Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, how was it a sin for her to do so? She didn’t know about sin yet. She didn’t know it was a sin to disobey God.
John Wilburn, asking Screwzie to explain the story of Noah’s Ark logically is futile. This is the ‘woman’ who compared Rush Limpballs to Jesus Christ. This is the ‘woman’ who holds Limpballs up as one of the greatest men in the world, yet he has divorced 3 wives, which is in direct contradiction to her Catholic faith. This is the ‘woman’ who ‘ just can’t see glorifying the selling of sex’, but uses a pic of Pflugrad, who definitely sells her sexuality, as a profile pic.
“What I see as trying witness and explain my side, is seen as Pushing myself on others.”
What an atheist, or even worse, a Muslim was doing this. Would you consider it “witnessing” for them too?
“7. Confiscating wealth of the producers.”
Ah, the old taxes = confiscation saw.
The truth is, Obama has not raised taxes, except on cigarettes. The truth is, he’s cut them, and Congress, half-controlled by the GOP, has gone along.
Of course, Suzie has never equated taxation to “confiscating wealth” back when Reagan or GWB were president. It’s only when a Democrat is in the White House that she does that.
Ha! Her hypocrisy knows no bounds.
“We are dealing with very literal and concrete thinkers here, folks.”
In particular, this one.
“I try to follow the Great Commission, but sometimes come off wrong.”
To me, a great commission was selling a $1.65M office builing.
PP, I always feel sorry for the “There has to be more than this life to look forward to otherwise it just isn’t worth it.”
How miserable does your life have to be to feel that way? My life’s pretty great, and if this is all I get, I’m good with that. Enjoy every sandwich.
Kristen, I have had this happen before, and I politely told them that I believe in the resurrection of Christ and that he is the Son of God, but I did listen to them.
John, I believe the act of Disobedience to God by Eve is what created the sinful nature of man from that point forward.
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
Kristen, My life is by no means miserable.
It used to be miserable (addiction, loneliness) until I became a Christian. I have been very blessed.
Do you have any relatives that have passed on that you miss? That is a huge hope for me. One of my best friends lost his child to cancer. That is the Hope & Faith that we have in Christ.
Sorry, John- that one response was suppose to be for Contra..not you.
@166 I could not agree with you more Kristen. I’m so darn grateful every darn day. I think jonesing for an afterlife (if you believe in such a thing) is equal to not paying attention to this amazing planet and life the we are all just flat out lucky to have.
“What I see as trying witness and explain my side, is seen as Pushing myself on others.”
Yes, yes it is pushing your point of view on others and your faith and dogma compel you to do it. If you stayed within the strict confines of you own congregation, you’d find more agreement. This is not such a place, and you should expect disagreement. When you spout utterly ignorant dogma, folks here will point that out. If quoting Matthew helps you deal with the perceived persecution, that’s fine, but it doesn’t make what you are saying any more accurate, true or valid.
I’ll defend you right to believe what you want to, but to folks who aren’t amenable to giving up evidence and reason, it all sounds bat guano crazy.
166.”PP, I always feel sorry for the “There has to be more than this life to look forward to otherwise it just isn’t worth it.”
But Kristen, it’s not enough to say Heaven vs. nothing, dead, life over, return to dust. No, no, no, it’s Heaven vs. Hell. Really good things don’t have to be sold with fear.
“John, God doesn’t need logic. Parting of the Red Sea?, Feeding the 5000, Healing of Lazarus etc.? God can do what he wants.”
Which is apparently ignoring lots of prayers to cure cancer, prevent war and generally help folks out of bad times. If you think otherwise, it’s just a delusion.
Don’t think I’m advocating for a evil God, that’s not my point at all. The point is, that stuff happens, there is no supernatural intermediary that causes it, or prevents it. I worked in cancer treatment for a long time and it was a formative experience to learn how very faithful people died just as easily as their not so religious cancer victims. Stuff happens and it’s about biology or physical processes, not some big puppeteer in the sky pulling the strings of folks who didn’t behave up to his standards.
@166 However Kristen, it was Sandi that said that quote, not PP…he just quoted her. It made me
and want to hug Sandi and make her take a walk in the forest or something.
That would be a GREAT commission John W! You are on a roll. I liked what you said in #155 to. Well said.
Kristen, I do not speak for others, but for me personally, my faith is not about “There has to be more than this life to look forward to otherwise it just isn’t worth it.” but rather it is about not accepting that a God who could build this wondrous and complicated world would be either the petty, vengeful, hateful Suzie/Lake Claytor God or the “let the worms have you” God. I think there is a final answer that will be given to each of us. I cannot prove that anymore than Suzie can prove that Hell is “where people who want to kill little babies go” but people who condemn, insult, hurl epithets and demean people won’t go. I cannot disprove that it just ends and the worms eat you either.
I have never, not once asked anyone to believe, nor even respect my faith. But don’t feel sorry for me or think that my life is somehow miserable because I cling to a final resolution from my Creator.
Congrats on your recovery, PP.
PP, I’m very glad you found what you needed in the church, but you have to understand that it’s not what everyone needs.
I’ve lost a parent, and of course I miss him. But I acknowledge the fact that death is inevitable, nothing lasts forever, and I just might not see him again. I appreciate the great life he had and my memories of childhood (my dad never hit me), but people’s time on earth is relatively short and when it’s done, it’s done. Not my favorite part of life, but that’s how it goes.
Pistol Pete, I am sorry your life was once so miserable and while I am glad that belief in the Bible has helped you, you need to understand that the job of witnessing and showing people the Light is not the same as browbeating and insulting them into it. When you go to a new and strange place for the first time do they greet you with an insult to wherever you have been before? You can be as judgmental as Lake Claytor, Suzie and pammala if you like, but yes, that kind of “religious conviction” will be met with anger, and rebuttal and you bring no one to God. It is not respectful of any path but your own and IMHO there are many paths to God and none are wrong if they get you where you need to be. I could be wrong too, but what if I am not? See what I mean?
You can say you do not believe in God, Heaven, Hell, religious dogma, or organized religion. Do you believe in the earth? Do you believe in the solar system? Do you believe in flowers, birds and bees and elephants and tigers and babies and toddlers and fireflies and butterflies…. And you really think all of that was happenstance? Really?
Pistol Pete – Do you believe that evolution should be taught in the schools? along with creationism, or just creationism? Do you believe the earth is 6000 years old or billions of years old?
I had an older couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses come to my home to give me biblical information – we stood talking for quite some time {as I am always happy to hear what they have to say} and was told that at the end of time, everyone would return from the dead and everyone would be given 2 acres of land!… do you believe this too, or is theirs a different interpretation of the Good Book? They did seemed shocked when I answered “no” to their question, wouldn’t I want to live forever…
I’m truly glad we have the freedom to believe in whatever faith we choose in this country. I’m equally glad that I have the freedom to think that religion is opium for the masses and if visions of the afterlife ease the hurt of losing a loved one, I’m glad you have that.
What I dislike is the two-edged sword of rich reward and eternal damnation that comes with honoring the faith vs. being bold enough to question it. Religion has supressed free thought for centuries and the fear of hell and dangling carrot of heaven have kept many, many folks from having any incentive to do so.
How far can I see in front of my face? Far enough to read this:
“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”. — “Hamlet, Act II, Scene II.
John, ever heard of Pascal’s Wager?
Oh wow. You mean “conservative’ John Wilburn who tries so hard to placate the leftwing nuts is anti-religion too?
We are SO surprised.
Lefties are lefties. There’s no point in trying to hide it.
“and was told that at the end of time, everyone would return from the dead and everyone would be given 2 acres of land!…”
Cool! That makes me want to be a Jehovah’s Witness too! What kind of deed restrictions would it have, because I want to put a double-wide on it? Can I have a Christmas tree or is that one of the strict no-nos? I heard they don’t believe in voting either. Well, there goes that idea.
No Art, I haven’t heard of Pascal’s Wager, but will now look it up…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal's_Wager
I disagree with the 5th condition of the wager itself, that there is nothing to lose by losing the wager as the mind can’t truly be free until it can accept there is no God (not saying there isn’t). Living accordingly to the belief in God, in some ways, IS losing. And that is the point of religion, which is separate from spirituality, but that’s another issue….. oh, here we go…..
183.”Oh wow. You mean “conservative’ John Wilburn who tries so hard to placate the leftwing nuts is anti-religion too?”
One, I never said I was a conservative and have admitted to being much more of a Libertarian. In my personal practice, I’m very conservative, I just don’t think the law necessarily needs to be conformed to those values. You probably mislabeled me in Suzie’s world because I’m pro-gun rights.
Two, lefties have a higher percentage of atheists than righties, no doubt, but if they believe in God/god/gods then they are not athiests, at least in their own mind. After all, being an athiest is simply a reflection of what one believes.
Three, I didn’t even say I was an athiest, I just said I was glad for the freedom to not have to believe. That’s a freedom you will probably never know.
Four, you are an attention ho!
Four, you are an attention ho!
Wow. You’re calling me a ‘ho”? The left believes that term degrades women so much so that they got a radio announcer fired over it. Let’s see if they come to my aid. I say they won’t. Because like with Rush’s comment, they aren’t really offended.
“Let’s see if they come to my aid.”
Just the fact that you got no support the first time you asked and are now asking again knowing I’m likely the only one who will respond proves you are not only an attention ho, but a desperate one.
“Because like with Rush’s comment, they aren’t really offended.”
There’s some truth to this for sure. It has become big business to convince people of what should offend them.
#186 Attention ho. Attention ho. Attention ho. Attention ho.
Now all I need to do is say it for three days, a few dozen more times, in much more offensive terms, and to several million more people and I’ll almost equal what Rash did.
Wilburn is correct. You are an attention ho’. Therefore, you need no one to come to your aid. You’re the one who says apologies aren’t necessary when the truth is spoken. Just like President Obama doesn’t need to call Blister Palin. She IS a slut.
