High on LSD (Lake Shore Drive) for the Monday OPEN thread

Photo by Ron of Lake Shore Drive in Chicago

“That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary’s trip. He crashed around America selling ‘consciousness expansion’ without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him too seriously . . . All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours, too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole lifestyle that he helped to create . . . a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody—or at least some force—is tending the Light at the end of the tunnel.”
Hunter S. Thompson

Fyi folks, the blogger Ron took this pic atop the Hancock building in Chicago on Sunday, and the road that you see along Lake Michigan is known as Lake Shore Drive, or LSD in Chicago lingo.

Thanks Ron! Hydrangeas on Saturday, LSD on Sunday — wow! (And I didn’t even show you the pix of the crabmeat-topped ribeyes he sent me!)

And there ain’t no road just like it,
    Anywhere I’ve found.
Runnin’ south on Lake Shore Drive,
    Headin’ into town.
Just slippin’ on by on LSD,
    Friday night trouble bound.

    Bloomberg again…

“If you’ve paid any attention to the US news over the past week, you’ve surely heard that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a ban on the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces, in an effort to combat obesity.

The announcement was made just days before Mayor Bloomberg celebrated National Donut Day in Madison Square Park, where, on June 1, the largest box of Entenmann’s Donuts ever created was proudly unveiled…”

Bloomberg’s been mayor for too long….he’s running out of material.

Having been born and raised in Virginia I’ve always had great pride in our historical significance. When I was stationed around the world, my shipmates would be in awe sometimes of all the cool things that happened in my backyard. A great part of the history of our country was formed right here on our soil.

Virginia is home to Jamestown, one of the first colonies in the new world. We are the birthplace of Presidents. People come from all over to view the great landmarks left by these men. We also claim one of the greatest Naval facilities in the world.

But as I was watching a Saturday Night Live rerun this weekend I was faced with a sudden grim reality. No longer do you hear the name Virginia followed by historical greatness. Now when you hear our state name mentioned on national television it is either follow by a punch line to a joke or is the punch line itself. Our current administration and state representatives have in two years undone a reputation that took over 200 years to build. I guess we can never accuse them of not accomplishing anything while they were there. I just wish the accomplishments were a little less humorous.

FBI: violent crime down for fifth straight year

Preliminary data is based on information the FBI gathered from 14,009 law enforcement agencies

    By Pete Yost
    Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The number of violent crimes reported to police across the country fell 4 percent last year when compared to 2010, the fifth straight year of declines.

The FBI also said Monday that the number of reported property crimes went down 0.8 percent, the ninth straight year-to-year decline.

The bureau says murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault all went down in 2011.

Jeb Bush is at it again – speaking the truth about the “new” Republican Party and getting blasted by Grover Norquist.

“Former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida said his father, George Bush, and Ronald Reagan would find themselves out of step with today’s Republican Party because of its strict adherence
“Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, similar to my dad, they would have had a hard time if you define the Republican Party — and I don’t — as having an orthodoxy that doesn’t allow for disagreement,” Mr. Bush said at question-and-answer session with reporters and editors held Monday morning in Manhattan by Bloomberg View.
Mr. Bush’s comments help solidify his role as the Republican Party’s leading voice of moderation at a time when many in the party — particularly Tea Party adherents — are calling for ever-greater ideological discipline.”
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/12/us/politics/jeb-bush-takes-aim-at-fellow-republicans.html?_r=1&ref=us

Shortly after, Grover Norquist, the Pledge Master of the Republican Party, countered Bush’s remarks with this:
    “It’s stup—it’s bizarre.”
“There’s a guy who watched his father throw away his presidency on a 2:1 [ratio of spending cuts to tax increases] promise,” Norquist said of Bush. “And he thinks he’s sophisticated by saying that he’d take a 10:1 promise. He doesn’t understand — he’s just agreed to walk down the same alley his dad did with the same gang. And he thinks he’s smart. You walk down that alley, you don’t come out. You certainly don’t come out with 2:1 or 10:1.” http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/06/grover-norquist-jeb-bush-ronald-reagan-taxes.php

Anyone think he is positioning himself for 2016 as a “moderate” conservative?

Hal Rogers investigation called for by CREW

By JOHN BRESNAHAN | 6/11/12 3:43 PM EDT Updated: 6/11/12 4:29 PM EDT

A watchdog group is calling on the U.S. Army and a congressional ethics panel to investigate GOP Rep. Hal Rogers, claiming the powerful chairman of the House Appropriations Committee earmarked money for a defense contractor that had donated to his reelection campaign, driving up Pentagon costs for helicopter parts.

Citizens for Responsibility for Ethics and Washington wants the Army inspector general’s office and Office of Congressional Ethics to look into Rogers’ relationship with Phoenix Products, a small Kentucky firm that makes transmission drip pans for the Blackhawk helicopter. Phoenix charges the Army roughly $17,000 for the drip pans, while competitors charge a fraction of that amount, according to CREW.

Boy the liberal spin machine is gearing up early. Apparently Obama can spend years associating with a venomously hate-filled racist pastor and it means nothing, but if anyone points out that he willingly chose to associate with a person who holds such beliefs, the person who pointed it out is racist?

Mark your calendars! VCDL is having an “Oh, yes we can!” picnic at a Roanoke County Park on Saturday, July 14th! Big turnout requested.

    HISTORY

Roanoke has an ordinance on their books that is so poorly written as to be almost impossible to understand, but could easily be misconstrued to ban firearms in the County’s parks:

“15-8 (6) Hunting and firearms. … No person shall within a park use, carry or possess firearms, ammunition or combinations thereof, as expressly prohibited by statute, or air rifles, spring guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, bow and arrows, slings or any other forms of weapons potentially dangerous to wildlife and to human safety or any instrument that can be loaded with and fire blank cartridges, or any kind of trapping device …”

EM Ed Levine communicated on behalf of VCDL with the County to fix the wording, but the County Attorney dug in his heals claiming that the wording and intent was quite clear. Yep – clear as mud. The bottom line is that the County CANNOT prohibit otherwise lawful open or concealed carry in their parks.

    BIRTH OF A PICNIC

What better way to get a clarification on that ordinance than for VCDL to hold a very large picnic in a Roanoke County park and let the police (and press) know we are doing so? The VCDL Board voted to hold and fund the picnic and you are invited! Thanks to Board member Al Steed Jr. for making the park arrangements.

Where have you been Chuck. This is old news (nearly a month ago). And the ad campaign that right wing nut was stirring up was too much even for Mitt Romney to stomach. (A fact you would have discovered if you read the whole story, not just the first paragraph.)

JEB BUSH, a lone wolf who will be eaten by the cannibals of the NEW GOP goose steppin to the Norquist Pledge. I admire JEBs forthrightness in the Bloomberg interview.

When a Party signs a Pledge to a private citizen ABOVE the Constitution they are elected to uphold, we are crossing into Orwellian or even worse times. Too me, this is treason, or at the least sedition and should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law. Norquist is on record as saying “we don’t need a president with ideas, we have the ideas, he just needs to be able to sigh his name.”

That my friends, is the most offensive, arrogant comment I’ve ever heard uttered by a politician or king maker if you prefer. Norquist must be removed from a dominant position of power within the GOP or the GOP will surely die.

  19. Art Hill | June 12, 2012 at 12:59 am

Jebbers positioning himself as the moderate Republican in 2016. Crazy like a fox, this country hasn’t seen the last of the Bush crime family.

  20. Chuck | June 12, 2012 at 7:49 am

I did read the whole story Dan. And actually I have been reading but largely avoiding participating in the amateur-hour, Candyland kindergarten that is your blog. However, the recent capture of Bill White brought this to mind. The reason being, would the liberals of good conscience participating here who are clearly guided by only the ecountry’s best interests and not partisan politics (massive amounts of sarcasm intended) be so ready to dismiss these past associations if the association were say, one of Romney or some other Republican, attending Bill White’s meetings for 20 years. Then would we say clearly that the association is meaningless as far as Romney’s character goes but that the person who pointed out the association was clearly racist?

Once again, hypocrisy thy name is liberal . . . and apparently thy spokesperson is Dan. Did you read all of that?

  21. Sandi Saunders | June 12, 2012 at 8:02 am

Chuck, that conservative spin machine is in overdrive already as well. Apparently Romney can spend years associating with venomously greed-filled Wall Street Vultures by day, baptize dead people and browbeat poor pregnant women by night and it means nothing, but if anyone points out that he willingly chose to associate with any such beliefs, the person who pointed it out is jealous of success. Go figure!

  22. Dan Casey | June 12, 2012 at 8:55 am

Chuck, I don’t believe I even posed a question to you, though it seems like you’re answering one from me. Candyland, indeed!

  23. Dan Casey | June 12, 2012 at 9:05 am

“Apparently Romney can spend years associating with venomously greed-filled Wall Street Vultures by day, baptize dead people and browbeat poor pregnant women. . .”

Sandi, wait JUST A SECOND! I will not allow you to distort Mitt’s record on this blog! Romney FAVORED abortion rights. It’s right there in the record, back when he ran for the U.S. Senate and governor of Massachusetts. He personally gave money to Planned Parenthood.

  24. Suzie | June 12, 2012 at 9:23 am
