Your daily Letter to the Columnist — June 19, 2012

Fans, and pans, for the column on Dave ‘Mudcat’ Saunders

Dan,

Good article on a great guy.

The buildings Dave bought and restored were a deteriorating hulk, when he bought them.

He gets a lot of credit for helping the City Market area come back to life.

There is no way to imagine a successful revitalization on the Market Square without the restoration of Dave’s buildings.

Take care,

Bern Ewert
CHARLOTTESVILLE

(Bern Ewert is the former city manager of Roanoke)

There’s a different take from a former high school classmate of Mudcat’s after the jump.
—————————————————

Dan,

I was amused by your story about Mudcat on Sunday.

Having attended Cave Spring High School with him, I suspect the lie he allegedly told to get the job at the paper may not have been an isolated instance.

He was perfect for Johnny Boy Edwards’ campaign.

In short, my own recollections of him are that he was so FOS that his eyes were brown.

Mike (not the “Mike” who posts frequently on this blog).

Yet oddly Mike needed to throw his punch from the safety of anonymity. Typical.

Ah! The memory of high school classmates from 25 or more years ago. :)

I didnt like what they set up for him
on Colbert. it didnt work well at all.
Too hillbilly cliche with the Mason jar..
plus his lines were so stifled nothing
ever developed. No chance for ad lib..
You cant get the flavor of a pot of good stew
if you dont slowly stir it.
And its not soup if u hit it 30 seconds in a blender.

Ugh….Just for the record, the author of the letter above is not me. It seems like one can’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone posting under the name ‘Mike’ on this blog lately.

  6. Dan Casey | June 19, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Mike, I updated the letter to make that clear.

  7. Sandi Saunders | June 19, 2012 at 10:33 pm

We do need to do something about the same names. It is confusing and disconcerting.

  8. Mike | June 19, 2012 at 11:03 pm

    Thanks, Dan!

“We do need to do something about the same names. It is confusing and disconcerting.”

How about every one who posts here grow some ‘nads or simply grow up. If you believe it and write it, then stand behind it.

If this doesn’t apply to you, ignore it.

Easy enough. The solution is available to all.

Do what you and I do — use our full names or nickname & last name.

FWIIW, I used DaveH, earlier, because there was already a Dave here when I joined in. I then switched from DaveH to my full name as much because some folk were confusing Dave and I, as to quit hiding behind a anonymous screen name.

If another Dave Hicks shows up and doesn’t put a #2 behind his I’ll add a #1 behind mine.

    ;-)

If one is going to voice opinions show some ownership — rather like the LTEs.

The far end of Campbell has come so far in the past 20 years. It used to be dilapidated old store fronts. I don’t who gets the credit but somebody should.

  12. hokie24 | June 20, 2012 at 10:56 am

I don’t think posting with your real name is any different on here than posting with a screen name, as long as you stick with the same name once you start posting.

If I called myself hokie24 or John Doe, would you know the difference outside of this website?

  13. William Bova | June 20, 2012 at 12:09 pm

I post here under my full name and folks like this so called “Mike” (not the “Mike” who posts frequently on this blog), are what we always called growing-up in Cave Spring, VA, a COWARD!!!

  14. scott | June 20, 2012 at 12:31 pm

And to Hokie24′s point, what’s to stop anyone from just calling themselves Steve Jones, or Jennifer Martin?

  15. Sandi Saunders | June 20, 2012 at 1:38 pm

I understand some people prefer anonymity and people like Suzie need anonymity, but 2 or three of any one name IS confusing and disconcerting if you are trying to have a conversation. It also seems to bring out the worst in some people.

There is a Will on the RT blog and a will over here. Totally different people, different attitudes and POVs. There is a Scott M, a Scott and a scott that post. There are now at least three Mikes. I consider it important to own what you say but I am not demanding anyone admit their identity, just end the confusion and all will be fine. Of course if you attack people who are not anonymous, from the safety of anonymity it might well be remarked upon.

A fake name is better than a confusing name IMO.

  16. scott | June 20, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Perhaps I shall just change my name to Warren Zevon.

  17. Art Hill | June 20, 2012 at 2:29 pm

“Perhaps I shall just change my name to Warren Zevon.”

Yeah, part of me went with him.

  18. scott | June 20, 2012 at 4:52 pm

Indeed, Art. Indeed. Wonder if he paid his tab at the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel….

  19. William Bova | June 20, 2012 at 6:30 pm

I see COWARD “MIKE”, not the Mike who posts frequently on this blog, has no response or comments to be made here out in public today. Maybe he has huddled with Suzie all day as they plan their next Eric Cantor fundraiser out in Culpepper…

  20. Henry | June 20, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Witnessing the obsessive behavior of posters with their attacks on Suzie would make anyone crazy for exposing their name on this forum. I used to write frequent letters to the editor in my hometown and I would get phone calls from crazies to the point that I stopped the practice when I moved here.
You guys focus too much on each other instead of the issues. There’s too much vitriol to make this a safe place.

  21. Sandi Saunders | June 20, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Henry, you are missing an important component. Suzie would never post her lies and bile if she had to use her own name and ergo she would not have engendered the “obsessive behavior” of those who wish she was not here.

  22. Sandi Saunders | June 20, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Maybe the vitriol would be here even if people had to use their real names and own it, but maybe it would not. I cannot say for sure, as it has never happened. On the blogs that DO require real names, it does not seem nearly to the level it is here.

  23. John Wilburn | June 20, 2012 at 11:59 pm

    Sandi:

“On the blogs that DO require real names, it does not seem nearly to the level it is here.”

Agreed. This is why people will cut each other off and act like jerks in traffic from the anonymity of their cars, but would never act in like fashion on the sidewalk as pedestrians face-to-face.

  24. 13 Suns | June 21, 2012 at 1:43 am

I don’t post under my real name because I’m in the Witness Relocation Program.

  25. Kristen | June 21, 2012 at 9:28 am

“This is why people will cut each other off and act like jerks in traffic from the anonymity of their cars, but would never act in like fashion on the sidewalk as pedestrians face-to-face.”

I would beg to differ. Walk slowly down the sidewalk of a major city and see what happens.
