Aw, shucks — yours truly gets half a page in Quill
A few months ago I noted here that I’d won a national award from the Society of Professional Journalists for column writing. The award presentation was Friday night in Washington, D.C., which I didn’t make. The fancy plaque is in the mail.
The organization has a 6-times-a year magazine, Quill. And the current issue is the awards issue. Below is my (half) page, with the other columnist who won an award, too. (Sorry about the colors, which scanned to0 rich).
Look what the judges wrote: “Casey doesn’t much care what others think.” Who’d a thunk?

Love it Dan, congratulations for well deserved recognition! Eat your heart out matt and Suzie et al!
“I was flabbergasted by the headlines
People in glasshouses throwing stones
Gaping wounds that will never heal
Now they’re moaning like a dog in a manger
It’s when that rough god goes riding
And then the rough god goes gliding
There’ll be nobody hiding
When that rough god comes riding on in”

Congrats!
Very deserving Dan. Congratulations.
Well done Dan…a true wordsmith.
Congratulations! Well done!
Well done, good sir! Well done!
Yay, Dan! Much deserved!
Congratulations. We don’t agree on everything, but you do a bang-up job with the blog and your columns. Well deserved indeed.
Congrats Dan. And by the way, a great Sunday column!
Congrats Dan!
This is what it’s all about for liberal ‘journalists’. They sit around and give each other meaningless awards. The only award that means anything is the number you write on Line 22, and the fewer people that know about it, the better.
But the blog has been very good the last couple of months. When freedom of expression is allowed, that’s all anyone can ask.
Congrats, Dan! Guess what all you people who write in whining about Dan and how the RT should fire him…..not. Happening. He’s the beat-known writer they have.
Yeah those “meaningless awards” are all for the birds…till your high holy beefbutt has a bust placed somewhere and then the accolades are well deserved. You are as transparent as you are pitiful. No wonder you like the hate spewing on the blog lately. Like a cat with cream, you are lapping it up. Such a wellspring of hate is so attractive.
I have never seen a better summary of the Romney/Republican philosophy of life and governance than this one provided by our very own Suzie:
The only award that means anything is the number you write on Line 22, and the fewer people that know about it, the better.

This is sad on so many levels. It is positive confirmation that the corporate shills who profess to be patriots and who attempt to convince us of their undying Christian faith actually only worship one God–Mammon.
And they have but one loyalty, the one to tbeir bank accounts.
The America that I live in and believe in, and the one that I think the vast majority of our citizens believe in doesn’t resemble that warped and twisted view in any way.
Our only hope is that the people who are being used by these cynical
plutocrats through wedege driven social issues in an effort to seize and maintain their power will wake up in time, understand that they are being used and reject the destructive philosophy.
In Screwzie’s effort to be more like Jesus, she posts NO sentiments of well-wishing for Dan’s Mother, but can’t help but make a disparaging remark about Dan’s award. Jesus is proud of her, I’m sure.
Yeah those “meaningless awards” are all for the birds…till your high holy beefbutt has a bust placed somewhere and then the accolades are well deserved.
Trust me, sweetcakes, I don’t need anybody to tell us we did a good job. The bottom line told us that. And again, the fewer people who know that, the better.
#11: “The only award that means anything is the number you write on Line 22, and the fewer people that know about it, the better.”
That bleak philosophy would explain why Rmoney doesn’t want anyone, perhaps including the IRS, to know the depth of his money lust.
It also means that the poster doesn’t believe these awards mean anything:
Presidential Medal of Freedom
Purple Heart
Medal of Honor
Congressional Gold Medal
Nobel Prize in Medicine
Nobel Prize in Physics
Clara Barton Award
Fields Award
Hokie Golden Lunch Pail
Etc.
The poster’s opinion that one’s money pile is an “award”, and the only “award” that matters, was given without any qualifiers. Being an unsolicited post, the poster had unlimited time to compose it for accuracy, unlike spontaneous remarks. Thus, no amendment of the poster’s claim can be considered valid, unless the poster concedes that the original claim was wrong, and details both how the elective claim was wrong, and why.
In time, all trolls shoot themselves. Some, like poster #11, are public suicides.

So Suzie, do you think Jesus was a white man? Yet another question I doubt she’ll answer.
“The only award that means anything is the number you write on Line 22, and the fewer people that know about it, the better.”
And keeping to yourself is why you’re constantly throwing it out there to try to impress us?
The love of money is the root of all evil. Thus we have Suzie.
Congratulations on being recognized for the success of your column Dan, even though I’m sure you know that you didn’t do that. Somebeody else did that.
Good job, Dan, especially since you brought out suzie’s jealousy of you yet again.

Read what the posts are saying. I said I don’t want awards at all. I don’t need public recognition to tell me how well we do our job; our bottom line tells us that. But awards are different from accomplishments. I am proud of our philanthropic accomplishments. But I certainly don’t want or need recognition for them.
Congratulations on being recognized for the success of your column Dan, even though I’m sure you know that you didn’t do that. Somebeody else did that.
LOL. Good one, Chuck.
And keeping to yourself is why you’re constantly throwing it out there to try to impress us?
Actually, that’s not so. As an anonymous person, I throw it out there to be instructive. If I were to give my name, then announce how much I made, that would be completely different.
Yeah Suzie, I’m sure your bottom line is a big, big secret. From everyone.
Suzie@23
I am proud of our philanthropic accomplishments. But I certainly don’t want or need recognition for them.

Sure. That’s why you contantly brag about your supposed selective philanthropy all the time on this blog. What a modest, unassunming, generoous, warm-spirited person you are. And I’m the King of England.
#21 Why, Chuck, I’m sure Dan does in fact know he didn’t do it by himself. Way back when he had some good teachers and parents. Past mentors and bosses helped him sharpen his prose and observation skills. The RT hired him and then gave him a shot at writing a column, including allowing him to say some things that probably bring some heat down every now and then. Every column gets a the eye of an editor or two who no doubt makes at least some of them better.
So, Chuck, if you were being serious, congrats on getting the point. If you were being sarcastic, you missed.
#21 Oh and, Chyuck, only a useless troll like suzie would have congratulated you like you had come up with some incredibly insightful barb.
Chuck, I didn’t do it alone. I had great parents, teachers, mentors, and some great acid, too. All of those were ingredients to my success.
#30 Sorry I forgot to mention the acid, Dan.
“The only award that means anything is the number you write on Line 22,”
yep, keep on worshipping that $
Suzie, are you coming to the bloggers’ get together? I can’t speak for everyone, but I have no intention of treating you rudely. Your fictitious personality here is fair game, but face-to-face I bet you’re more civil and I will reciprocate if so.
@30 – However without YOU, this award isn’t given. YOU did earn and YOU did build that. And YOU alone earned it. Your teachers didn’t, your parents didn’t, your mentors didn’t and acid didn’t. YOU did.
Congrats Dan!
John Wilburn writes: “Suzie, are you coming to the bloggers’ get together?”
Is there seriously a bloggers get-together? When and where?
@33 I concur with John W., please come show us your stunningly lovely face at the get together Suzie. I promise to look very ordinary next to you (and be civil). So, are you going to attend?
Oh, and I just wanted to clarify Suzie, that if we follow the logic of your post @11, then beauty pageant awards are also meaningless, correct? Along with Warren’s eloquent list @18.
Oh, and grats Dan.
@Lynda K – We are getting together on August 19th. The details will be coming shortly (by the end of next week). Please email me at themiriam@comcast.net as I’ve created a list of everyone who wants to attend and will get info to everyone soon.
Also, and Dan may disagree with this and that’s fine, I don’t find it a wise idea to just publish on the blog when/where etc. we are meeting because the bottom line is that any ole person who isn’t even involved with the blog community could show up and ruin it. So folks who are sincerely interested in meeting everyone can take the extra step and email me. That’s my opinion.
Miriam:
“…any ole person who isn’t even involved with the blog community could show up and ruin it.”
Sadly, it’s the people who ARE involved with the blog who are most likely to ruin it.
Suzie, you’d better bring Pflugrad!
Miriam, that would be one intrepid soul.
Kristen:
42.”Miriam, that would be one intrepid soul.”
No kidding! They’d have a better chance jumping into a piranha tank.
JohnW, I’m sure we’d scare away a lot more people than we’d attract.
#12 suzie, you’ve mentioned more than once that your posts aren’t being deleted lately. What you don’t mention is that this coincided almost exactly with when you stopped calling our president a certain racist name and when Dan suggested that the rest of the posters not mention your use of that certain insult any more to see if you would stop. Mighty coincidental, eh?
Anyway, we’re quite aware that any “censorship” (which wasn’t really censorship at all) you were suffering was your fault and nobody else’s.
Take a Geritol and calm down gdad. It was a joke. A light-hearted jab said with good-natured intent. I disagree with Dan most of the time, but obviously I enjoy reading his columns, or I wouldn’t do it with any frequency at all.
I also realize the disingenuous folly of taking lines out of context and using them for political gain. Unfortunately it usually works because most partisans on either side of the aisle are so blinded by their unthinking devotion to their own demagoguery, that they will leap at any opportunity to assail the other side. Now before you get to feeling to proud of yourself or too much like Obama has been martyred, I will point out again that your side did the exact same thing a few weeks back with Romney’s “I’m not concerned about the very poor” remark.
In any event, I’ll take your praise/criticism and afford it all the credence it is due and file it away somewhere below Suzie’s. (That was another witty jab incase you missed it)
