Spotted near Towers: Pretty little bucket trucks, all in a row

Ever since the power went off Friday, one line I’ve heard over and over and over is, “Where are the AEP trucks?”

Some people have seen one or two here and there. Crews have been working, no doubt, because the local grid is slowly being repaired. But I’ve also heard from many people who have seen no bucket trucks whatsoever.

One of those is my friend Paul Giordano, who lives in Raleigh Court’s Center Hill neighborhood as still has no power. But Tuesday evening, he discovered the bucket-truck mother lode.

“They’re on Colonial Avenue, parked across the street from Fresh Market!” he exclaimed.

His wife Robin took this picture and sent it to me.

Even linemen need to eat, of course, so let we should assume what — they they were on a dinner break? Paul thinks perhaps they were gassing up on coffee at Starbucks ahead of a long night of work.

At least, that is one of his fervent hopes. The other is that they’re heading his way, to Center Hill.

I would like to thank the many linemen that have sacrificed their holiday and family to allow us out of power to soon be the ones with power! Major kudos.

APCO workers–simultaneously our heroes and recipients of our disdain.

I sincerely wish those people well and hope none of them suffer any injuries working such a dangerous job in this heat.

    Plus 1, here.

FWIIW, it was a AEP crew using bucket trucks that got us back on line.

No matter how much one may vent about management and corporate preparedness, IMHO we should all take our hats off to the workers — both AEP and those from outside the area. Major kudos, here.

    Ya know Dan..
On the internet you can track every single commercial airline
flight in the US with the stroke of a few keys.
Im certain that Appys trucks have GPS monitors on them..
Wonder if they-d mind the public knowing where those trucks are and
where the clusters get together .
You know…just in case the customers want to take cake , puddin , or cold beans over there ?
Maybe someone will get a charge out of that idea.
    Maybe not .

We have no idea what those workers are doing, how long they’ve been there, even if there are any workers inside of those trucks. They could be working on your family’s power line and just needed a place to park. Everyone complains that Towers doesn’t have power but they look out the side of their eyes when the power trucks roll up… Be thankful that we have power trucks.

Will Roanoke be able to have fireworks tonight? I wondered if all the emergency vehicles were being kept aside for power issues and not be able to monitor the fireworks display. I hope it’s not akk canceled.

Wednesday am – They just arrived on Arlington Rd SW! Yee Haah!

Do people complaining about the absence of APCO workers ever think? It isn’t like snow removal. These workers are likely off the beaten path or up on some mountain. Just because you don’t see them on your street doesn’t mean they’re not working.

They deserve our gratitude working in sweltering heat for hours on end.

Kristen just can’t stay away can she? She must be great company on a “beach vacation” all holed up in her room. On the other hand, maybe b/f and the kids prefer it that way.

#9 Come on leatherface, some of us prefer to avoid skin cancer and premature wrinkling by not spending all day in the sun.

    Wow!

Suzie and I have agree twice in the past week or two.

Suzie have you applied for that job yet ? The devil is waiting and hell still isn’t full.

Here is one I spotted earlier on Brambleton. There were two, but we had already passed one by the time the camera snapped the picture.

Ya know, I’m 84 y/o and even though I use an older cell phone, I understand that it’s possible to be on the Internet via a smartphone.

Power back at 3pm! Hallelujah !

  16. gdad | July 5, 2012 at 9:22 am

#14 You know, 13 Suns, I wasn’t even thinking about the Smart phone (or various tablet type devices) that you can use right on the beach to connect. But then suzie wouldn’t know about those things, which she demonstrates with her weak attempt at an insult. She doesn’t even realize yet that you can connect when you’re not at home.

“Glenvar High School opens public showers” …KUDOS Roanoke County!!

Can someone tell me what the city of Roanoke did specifically after the storm – say on Saturday or Sunday to help residents??? Yep…I’m angling!

Suz, I’m composing this post outside a bar in Winston Salem on my blackberry, compleatly overwhelmed by your technical ignorance. No, scratch that; just change it to plain ignorce, no qualifier needed.

Kristen, I hope your stalker hasn’t boiled your rabbit while you were on vaca.

  19. Steve C | July 5, 2012 at 10:11 pm

No, no, no; belay my last, suz. I’ve pulled up my anchor and just sailed to the edge of the flat earth. Hey, I think I see your house down there!

  20. gdad | July 6, 2012 at 11:02 am

#18 Wow, Steve C, you can do that? I thought from Oliver’s comments that you had to leave the company of everybody you know and shut yourself alone in a dark room to get on the interwebs. You mean it’s only suzie who does it that way?

  21. gdad | July 6, 2012 at 12:40 pm

#17 The Roanoke Civic Center opened as a cooling station on Saturday. Definitely one of the first in the area.
