A song for Joe Biden on the Friday drive-time tune!

This tune was on most every jukebox in the country in the summer of 1983, and me and my biking mates played it repeatedly on our ride from Seattle to New York.

Of course, this was also the band that Rush Limbaugh stole his theme music from.

Curious what liberals think of Condaliza Rice and Marco Rubio?

Dan, I quote “and ME and biking mates played it repeatedly on our ride from Seattle to New York.”

    OMG-ME and biking mates.

Only a redneck “Journalist” could make that mistake. Shows how much you really know. Shouldn’t come as a surprise. Like I said earlier, back in the day . . . thrown to the curb!

  6. Ron May | August 31, 2012 at 10:35 pm

    Yes Michael H,

    Go Vols!!

Have driven 5 hours to get to my home place in southern Indiana for a family reunion. Anticipate that more than 100 of my extended family will come to the farm tomorrow’s reunion. Great dinner tonight with siblings & cousins. I am more relaxed than I have been for a while. Plan to fish for bluegill & bass in farm ponds & enjoy the company of my extended family. Spent some time tonight visiting grave sites of my parents, grandparents & othe family members this evening.

Have a great Labor Day fellow bloggers.

  7. Devino | August 31, 2012 at 11:12 pm

Vols looked good! Cred where cred is due.

Dan, you are something. Nothing was stolen I doubt. Did you steal this vid? God, how this newspaper gives you a forum to comment your biased opinions on…in a small city. Geesh…sickening. I have been out of town and I do not have a habit of revisiting your blog after I post, but I will this one time, to see if you respond.

I am so sick of what our country has become and I blame you “shillers.” You all are losing favor. Just answer the damn question that I have posted on this blog over and over…why are you voting for the current administration? Please go on merit and deduct the losses. If you cannot do this, your blog is a waste of time for anyone with an open mind and I will truly work to diminish your presence here. I for one, could be persuaded to vote either way…but I NEED something tangible to go on. I am not the rich white guy that you all hate/portray the GOP as consisting of. I am hard working guy who is now upside down on my mortgage, supporting a big family (which I am devoted and happy to do) and I have paid my way in blood, sweat and tears my entire life. Everyone should do the same. Now, I challenge any of you, snub or disparage me for wanting change. Let us compare our lives…and what is proposed by both parties. I NEED this debate. By the way, I have kept this clean and above board…so I will go on the record now and advise anyone disagreeing with me to keep it civil and relatively clean. No “blog0-sphere” Rambos please. Straight dialogue. Why are you willing to give the current admin. another chance? I (and everyone, I mean everyone, I meet is tired of the current state of affairs)am ready for a change. We need it.

  8. Devino | August 31, 2012 at 11:13 pm

In reference to my above post…para #2, I meant “shrillers” not shillers.

  9. Nosaj | September 1, 2012 at 6:51 am

Okay, Devino, let’s give this a shot. Here are my Top 5 reasons for voting for President Obama:
    1. We are out of the war in Iraq and Bin Laden has been dealt with. We should be out of Afghanistan, and Guantanamo should be shuttered, and I am disappointed in Obama on these last two issues.
    2. Economy is inching back from the depths. Stock Market much better and unemployment rate stabilized. Needs to better. Romney/Ryan will cut taxes again, and history tells us this doesn’t work. See Reagan and Bush years.
    3. President Obama established the Affordable Care Act, a very small step in the right direction. Romney/Ryan will try to undo the ACA.
    4. Romney/Ryan will likely deregulate banks again, which was one of the prime reasons the economy
    tanked in the first place.
    5. Social Issues. In my opinion, the Republican platform threatens the rights of women and men in the areas of reproductive rights, voting, labor, education, and marriage. That is unacceptable to me.
I believe in the collective good of our society. Those of us who have done well have a duty to assist where we can. These are the important issues from my point of view.

A more appropriate song for Biden and Obama would be:
Bob Marley – Don’t Worry be Happy
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo4OnQpwjkc
    -
But: how happy will these young people be when:
The can’t get a job commensurate with their college education and loans?
They don’t have a career — just lucky to get a job?
They find out what “deducts” are when they do get a job?
They realize it’s them that are going to pay off the Obama $16 TRILLION debt?
They realize that Obama has degraded our country and economy into a third-world entity kowtowing to his friends in China and Russia?

Really, Devino? You enter insulting Dan, call the rest of us names and blame us for everything wrong in your little world, demand debate because you “need” it ( not our problem), and finish up admonishing us to keep it clean. Why should we care if you’re upside down in your mortgage?

How about this? I detest every bit of the woman-hating, screw-the-poor, rob-from-the-weak, corporate ass-kissing GOP. I cant stand their gleefully ignorant and backwards followers. I can’t find a Republican for whom j would vote to mulch my yard, much less run my country. And I’m NOT upside down in my mortgage. How’s that?

  12. Dan Casey | September 1, 2012 at 11:24 am

    Lars,

Would it surprise you to learn that Bob Marley never sang that tune? You believe he did because, heck, YOU FOUND IT ON TH INTERNET!

Make sure you read my column Sunday. Same theme.

  13. matt | September 1, 2012 at 11:29 am

“And I’m NOT upside down in my mortgage. How’s that?”

Sounds like Devino should have asked for more government (tax payer funded) assistance, eh?

  14. Contrasuzie | September 1, 2012 at 11:46 am

Bob Marley died in 1981. Bobby McFerrin released ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ in 1988, so it’s very, very unlikely that Marley even covered the song. LBHagen didn’t even bother to read the comments accompanying the video he posted, or he would’ve seen a couple that pointed out Marley did not write/sing this song. He could have then done about 2 minutes worth of research and verified that Bobby McFerrin did the song. Pathetic. Lazy.

Apparently, he’s not getting much traffic over on his ‘Roanoke Slant’ blog, so he’s decided to piggyback on the popularity of Dan’s blog to get his drivel seen. Pathetic. Lazy.

  15. Dan Casey | September 1, 2012 at 11:55 am

In the big scheme of things, Lars Hagen’s mistake and confusion between Bob Marley and Bobby McFerrin on “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is rather insignificant.

But what it points up is the ease with which the internet has made us all king of whatever “facts” we care to go find on the web. There you can find “substantiation” of the craziest garbage you can dream up.

The problem is, that has many broader and more sobering implications, in schools, in politics and other realms. And that’s the subject of Sunday’s column.

  16. L.D. | September 1, 2012 at 12:09 pm

#12 “Would it surprise you to learn that Bob Marley never sang that tune? You believe he did because, heck, YOU FOUND IT ON TH INTERNET!”

Lars, On July 6 Dano posted the following:

“Do you seriously believe O’Reilly (or Fox) gave up $10 million just to shut up a liar?

The woman had tapes of phone calls and voicemails O’Reilly left her that are out there on the net. You should read them.”

So you see HE believed THAT lie (the $ 10 million has never been proved) just because, heck, HE FOUND IT ON THE INTERNET. HE can use that reasoning but damn if you do!

I wouldn’t worry about this “English major” that murders the Queen’s english (“ME” and my biking mates played it repeatedly).

Wow, WHO’S ACCUSING WHOM of insulting behavior and name-calling??? OMG. And maybe Devino wouldn’t be upside down on his mortgage either if he had the government bailing him out.

In the big scheme of things, Lars Hagen is rather insignificant.
Roanoke Slant has been around since February, 2005.

Pretty insignificant, I’d say.  No wonder he’s using Dan’s column.

  20. L.D. | September 1, 2012 at 12:47 pm

    One-more-thing.

Kristen, I can’t imagine you needing ANYONE to spread crap for you (I can’t find a Republican for whom I would vote to mulch my yard) since you are so adept at it. Furthermore, if you if did have someone mulching your yard they WOULD most likely be a Democrat (the owner of the company however-the one who BUILT IT-would MOST LIKELY BE A REPUBLICAN).

  21. Bill Perdue | September 1, 2012 at 12:52 pm

damnit Dan, when is this classic going to be the drive time tune? Very aprapo don’t you think?

    Creedence Clearwater Revival Fortunate Son
    Songwriter: JOHN C. FOGERTY

Some folks are born to wave the flag,
Ooh, they’re red, white and blue.
And when the band plays “Hail to the chief”,
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

    It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no senator’s son, son.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one, no,
    Yeah!

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don’t they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

    It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no millionaire’s son, no.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, “How much should we give?”
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no military son, son.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one, one.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no fortunate son, no no

Wow Kristen, tell us how you really feel not healthy to hold in feelings

  23. Smithfield Hokie | September 1, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Way to stay classy Kristen. Maybe you can get the gov’t to pay an illegal Mexican to mulch your yard for you. They will take care of all the world’s other problems too. Just turn on the news and listen for yourself. Also Nosaj, what do you propose we do with all the terrorists currently held at Guantanamo? Kill them, no that would be inhumane. We could boat them over to Miami and let them out, because that had great results before. Or, we could send them back to where they came from so they can reorganize and resume the activities that got them arrested in the first place. No one wants any more American blood to be spilled either Military or civilian, but it’s the world we live in today and the world we have lived in for thousands of years in terms of war (No one has to call me out and remind me that America isn’t thousands of years old, I am aware of that). As we sit in our ignorance and digest what the media delivers we really haven’t a clue what attacks or terrorist activity has been stifled by our military operations. We have never had a perfect world and won’t ever as long as homo sapiens occupy it.
Dan seems upset that Rush Limbaugh and him have the same music interests. Typical dramatic statement that the song was “stolen” by Rush. I will have to hand it to you, there is a lot of traffic on your blog. Somewhere in the back of my mind there is a glimmer of hope that you don’t really believe all the things you write and are only doing so to create blog traffic. I’m not sure what will happen in the upcoming elections, but one thing is for sure I won’t be swayed by the views presented on this blog.

Before anyone posts anything they receive as a random e-mail or share something on Facebook, they should go to snopes.com to check to see if it’s true. I do it all the time, and have shamed a few people into taking down FB posts or sending disclaimers to their e-mails. It takes about 3 minutes to run the check, and could eliminate a lot of web-based ignorance.

Rachel Madow just spent a segment on discussing

dano, sooo, you slander a fellow “opinion journalist” by saying he “stole” something, eh? i’m guessin’ you’re just jealous…after-all, he’s doin’ what he’s doin’, and, well….you’re just doin’ what your’ doin’… is cool, i got it.

  27. Frank | September 1, 2012 at 7:17 pm

…not for nothin’ but i just saw the Rasmussen report which says “more people are saying they are republicans than ever before in the history of the monthly tracking poll…which began in 2002. a whopping 37.6 % of people polled now “admit to being Republican”. how in the world have Republicans managed to win even one election, let alone do what we did in 2009 in Virginia, and 2010 nationally. i guess that some of you libs out there blogging on dano’s threads are really repubs at heart… i respect that, and realize that you’ve got appearances to keep up…but some time soon, you’ll be able to come out of the closet…

  28. Dan Casey | September 1, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Man arrested for threatening to kill girlfriend because she’s “too liberal.”

“Kappheim explained to a sheriff’s deputy, “He was very conservative, and his girlfriend was liberal and he felt he was going to have kill her,” according to the arrest affidavit, according to WPTV.”

  29. Kristen | September 1, 2012 at 9:48 pm

Oh please. Dewhineo asked why anyone would give the Obama administration a “second chance”. The GOP in it’s current iteration is unfit to govern. Why would I pretend otherwise? As for the mulch spreading, I almost went with gutter cleaning. Perhaps that would have been more popular.

There might be, somewhere, out there in the distance Republicans who recognize how bizarre and hateful the GOP has become. I know there are, because I’ve spoken with a few. Unfortunately, they’re being drowned out, or maybe aren’t bothering to speak up.

For al you tender and easily offended souls out there, none other than Karl Rive himself made a joke about offing Akin. When the party has become too disgusting even for Rove, it might have a problem. Suck on that for a while.

  30. Frank | September 1, 2012 at 10:01 pm

so dano, is your point to imply that kappheim is one of those libs who’s trying desperately to keep his liberal side all closeted up?

  31. Michael A Howdyshell | September 1, 2012 at 10:20 pm

You know Bill there are some reasonable Republicans just like there are reasonable Democrats. I think I’m fairly reasonable. Yes I prefer traditional things but I frankly don’t care what other people do and while I think abortion is wrong I’m pro choice. I’m not opposed to back ground checks on fire arm purchases. This election however I’m a single issue voter. I think Romney will be better for business its really that simple and as is often said here I’m a simple person

  32. Frank | September 1, 2012 at 10:50 pm

Michael A Howdyshell, i think you are one of millions….

  33. Kristen | September 2, 2012 at 10:59 am

MichaelH would have zero chance of making a national GOP ticket. I mean that as a compliment.

  34. Shrillary | September 2, 2012 at 1:14 pm

poor Frank @27 always the perpetual promoter of false “facts” – duped again, no?

Rasmussen’s numbers don’t add up – Why? the problem is that exit polls historically show that a presidential electorate with more Republicans than Democrats has not occurred in the past 35 years… So the +4 republican electorate bump indicated by Ras has no historical basis…just more made up stuff that can not be verified nor replicated by other pollsters.
