Chippendales show at 202 Market CANCELED? — UPDATED

jill, jellidonut | Wikimedia Commons

Some bad news for many excited women around town. From 202 Market’s Facebook page:

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to continue with the Chippendales Show scheduled for September 18, 2012. We apologize and anyone having purchased tickets and/or VIP Tables will receive a 100% refund of their money. Please contact events@202market.net for more information.”

Here’s the column that ran about this Aug. 12

I’ll update here when I get more information.

UPDATE #1: I emailed 202′s event planner, Jo Jo Soprano, and he responded with the notice posted above. The only thing he added was, “It was not our choice.”

Curious.

Whose choice do you reckon it was, folks? The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board’s? The Chippendales?

UPDATE #2: Roanoke.com is reporting that 202 Market got scammed by a fake Chippendales outfit, and when that came out the show got canceled.

UPDATE #3: Email from Jo Jo Soprano: ” I have tickets and posters here with the Chippendales Registered Trademark if you would like to use them to show how fraudulent this company was.”

See what you did, Dan? Thanks a lot.

  2. scott | August 15, 2012 at 11:23 am

Word on the street is there are “bizarre circumstances” about this cancellation, and it’s not the obvious ABC intrusion.

  3. Saintbridge | August 15, 2012 at 11:30 am

People over on 202′s FB page are hot and they are divided into 2 camps. One is upset that 202 apparently (?) didn’t know this might violate ABC laws. The other is upset that there is an apparent double standard about “gentlemen’s clubs” and this.

Could be interesting … I got no skin in the game either way. So to speak. ;)

  4. gmdl | August 15, 2012 at 11:33 am

I would have been surprised if 202 was still open by Sept. 18th anyway.

  5. gdad | August 15, 2012 at 11:35 am

I haven’t been to a “gentleman’s club” in many a year, but the one over on Franklin Road doesn’t (or at least didn’t) serve alcohol. So no ABC license.

  6. gdad | August 15, 2012 at 11:38 am

#4 Why would that be, gmdi? Are you saying they expanded just in time to close?

  7. Kent | August 15, 2012 at 11:48 am

Not that I was going; but if the community does not like the results they should put some serious thought as to who they continue to send to Richmond. The General Assembly has and always will write the laws; but we enable them. I might add, the officials who enforce the laws are simply doing as they must.

Maybe its just me but I would prefer not to spend $150 on a “5 star” dinner where just the night before there were naked dudes sweating everywhere. Even though they aren’t having this event anymore, I feel like its the male stripper restaurant and that doesn’t make my $40 entree go down any easier.

  9. John Brown | August 15, 2012 at 11:53 am

P.S. I don’t eat at the buffet at the Gold & Silver either

  10. Dan Casey | August 15, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Does Gold and Silver have a buffet?

Is it better than the Golden Corral?

  11. gdad | August 15, 2012 at 1:31 pm

“[UPDATE] Chippendales show at 202 Market was a fake; official says Roanoke venue was ‘an innocent bystander’”

    Dan, Dan, Dan. Tsk, tsk.

  12. John Brown | August 15, 2012 at 2:20 pm

I hope you didn’t fork over a deposit JoJo. Since when did 202 turn into In The Mix One Six? I thought it was suppose to be an upscale restaurant and music venue for regional groups. I guess the only way they can stay open downtown is to turn it into a hip hop night club.

  13. Jaymi | August 15, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Dan your comment about the buffet at the Gold and Silver club vs. Golden Corral had me in tears I was laughing so hard. Thanks for the good laugh!!

  14. Still Learning | August 15, 2012 at 3:31 pm

And our tourism leaders just proclaimed on the front page of the RTimes that “we are better than Asheville”. I bet they could get the real chippers if they wanted them.

  15. Barry | August 15, 2012 at 3:31 pm

All of this hoopla is evidence tht the liberals and gays are taking over everything so run for the hills before the fire falls.

  16. NeoBriteRke | August 15, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Sounds like Barry (15) is about to loose his Chick-Fil-A now that he won’t be able to see the Chipper’s. Politics and or gay had nothing to with a local business getting scammed. Ignorance is not an admirable trait. Your evidence is just what makes “you” sleep at night, not the majority of Roanokers.

  17. dave | August 15, 2012 at 4:31 pm

    Dan

What could be worse than a “fake” Chippendale (whatever that is)?

And as for the buffet at the Gold and Silver, I heard that there was something fishy about that.

    :)

  18. Laura | August 15, 2012 at 5:30 pm

“What could be worse than a “fake” Chippendale (whatever that is)?”

River Laker and a bicycle helmet.

  19. Dennis Chandler | August 15, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Roanoke is not big enough for chippenqueers.

  20. dave | August 15, 2012 at 9:15 pm

    Laura

    Touche’

  21. river | August 15, 2012 at 9:40 pm

Laura, please don’t bring me into this! And for the record, my “comedic, subversive, genius” performance at the Valentini event at 202 Market was 100% pre-approved and 100% pre-authorized by the Valentini hosting organization and 100% pre-planned. And, of course, it was not a striptease, by any stretch of the imagination. Local media, for some reason, has chosen not to report these rather relevant details.

  22. Kristen | August 15, 2012 at 9:52 pm

John Brown, I just used your line “I don’t eat at the buffet at Gold and Silver” on a few people on the house and there was general hilarity.

If not for the homophobes crawling out from under their rocks, this would be a funny thread.

  23. John Wilburn | August 15, 2012 at 9:55 pm

    Barry:

“run for the hills before the fire falls.”

Tell us about this evert, Barry. Please tell us if you think is literally going to happen. Please spare us any source that without exception is in chapter and verse format as “will” already has that covered.

  24. Dan Casey | August 15, 2012 at 9:55 pm

River Laker will remain the only male who has ever stripped at 202 Market. I’m sure he’s relieved that distinction will remain.

  25. dw | August 15, 2012 at 10:29 pm

The only reason Biden made it to town was because he thought, with his fake tan and plugs, that he could headline the Chippendale gig. Maybe raise 4 or 5 bucks for the campaign. I hear he does a mean “chain” act.

And, unlike plagiarism Joe Joe, I actually wrote these words myself.

  26. river | August 15, 2012 at 10:35 pm

Thanks, Dan, for making the distinction between stripping & striptease. Confusing the 2 leads to disservice to both activities.

  27. Kristen | August 16, 2012 at 10:12 am

Strip-tease implies an willing audience and an attractive performer.

  28. A different Scott | August 16, 2012 at 1:13 pm

HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE??? Who Cares that these idiots were fooled by imposters…….WHY would you even consider having an event of this nature, after almost losing your liquor license, because of a similar “auction,” involving lude & inappropriate behavior?! The owners don’t have a clue, & this Soprano guy, has “interesting” taste in promoting events! PICK A LANE 2LIVECREW….UHH…..202!!! Either we’re gonna be a restaurant, a night club, or…..a “BOOM BOOM ROOM!!” Can’t be all three babee!!!! “Brown Chicken, Brown Cooooow………”

  29. scott | August 16, 2012 at 1:39 pm

So, uh, has anyone assumed the obvious: that River Laker was the guy who set up the fake show? ; )

  30. Dan Casey | August 16, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    scott, interesting notion.

I can tell you that River was the first person who contacted me about it. . .

  31. river | August 16, 2012 at 2:08 pm

if only you’d said that months back, Kristen.

  32. Kristen | August 16, 2012 at 2:15 pm

river LOL. Not for the first time I figured out something to say long after it was needed. :)

  33. MikeC | August 18, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Rest assured that no decisions at 202 are championed by Roanoke’s gay population. Perhaps you should visit the venue before judging their crowd.
