Notice, please, what Mitt Romney ISN’T saying

AP Photo

Today, Mitt Romney replied to Harry Reid’s charge that a Bain insider told him Mitt Romney had paid no federal income taxes for 10 years.

Watch the Mittster’s carefully parsed reply and note what he DOESN’T say. He doesn’t deny he paid no federal income taxes for the past 10 years. He says he’s paid “a lot of taxes.”

Of course he has. Romney’s a rich guy. He has a bunch of houses, including one with an elevator for his cars. He paid sales taxes during that time. And he paid gasoline taxes. And utilities taxes. And surely some others. We know that he paid federal income taxes in 2010 and 2011.

What we DON’T know, however, is if he paid any federal income taxes from 2000 through 2009. Because Mitt won’t release those returns. And in the video below, he doesn’t say that he paid ANY federal income taxes in that period, either. He merely makes the question grow in prominence.

It’s simply amazing. And he’s on the defensive, which means he’s losing.

Is it too late for the GOP to look for a new nominee? Seriously. Can they draft anyone besides Ron Paul?

They should draft Rick Perry (Bush Lite). He is Southern Baptist, Has good hair, is a likable fellow, and has learned to laugh at his goofs. A much more appealing puppet for Wall Street than Mitt.

Is it against the rules of the Church for one Mormon to call another a liar? I guess if you only say he is wrong that is not quite the same as calling Reid a liar, or is it. A little alcohol would make the discourse more interesting. Get down with some real mud wrestling.

Put Up Or Shut Up Harry Reid!

Anyone want to talk about the latest unemployment rate? Rises To 8.3 Percent. 16 Trillion dollars and rising?

dave, will they release their tax returns? If so, that might be the ticket. . .

If he did something illegal, the IRS would have already stepped in.

Obama enrolled illegally as a foreign student. That’s why he won’t release his college records. He is also a serial user of illegal drugs. That’s why he won’t release his medical records. Will the Democrats replace him?

  7. Blue John | August 3, 2012 at 8:57 pm

Any proof to back up your allegations Henry? Let’s see it!

  8. Sharon N. | August 3, 2012 at 9:19 pm

I’m sure Mitt is doing this on purpose, it’s good “politics”..the more that the left asks for his tax returns, and speculate what he is supposedly “hiding”..the more we can remind voters how much Obama has sealed, and speculate on what HE may be hiding.

  9. Sharon N. | August 3, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Now, all Romney needs to do is fill out some old tax returns online, and then refuse to release anything else.

  17. matt | August 3, 2012 at 10:23 pm

    Sharon N,

Bachelor’s Degree Dano took 30 inches of column space to “put into context” a single sentence by President Obama (and then he harps on others for long posts). Only a self-admitted “subjective as hell” opinion columnist would be blind to such hypocrisy.

  18. Michael A Howsyshell | August 3, 2012 at 10:28 pm

Hey Dan you going to stay up all night so I can post while waiting on Hogzilla?

  19. Dan Casey | August 3, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Master’s-degree matt is jealous because I get paid to write 700-1,000 word columns. And here he is, giving it away for free . . . which is exactly what the market has decided his stuff is worth.

And he gets paid for this trash? Again: Economy, economy, economy. Casey has no worries, the Lib Times will make sure he keeps a job……but he had help getting it. Ask Obumma, he’ll set you dumbasses straight! Kick both these bums out of their current jobs and let’s see if they can find another. Bet not with this high unemployment rate we have today. Amazingly stupid posts by stupid lemmings that follow the Obumma trail.

It’s pretty pathetic that a guy running for the single most important job in the world, a job which requires trust and honesty, will not reveal to those he wants to elect him about his finances. We’re not talking ancient history here, we’re talking 3 years ago. All this guy has in common with anyone here is that he puts pants on one leg at a time and he probably pays someone to help him with that. He simply is incapable of relating to the man on the street in large part because he’s never been one.

Economy, economy? – yet there has been no indication that the GOP candidate has any knowledge or experience to run an economy except Mass. which he destroyed.

Barack Obama has taken the US economy from a depression to continuous months of growth when the rest of the world is in double dip recession. Indeed, the economy is crucial and the best man for the job already is in office. The last thing this Nation needs is a return to the GWB economic policies or worse – a Mass. economy.

A new theory on Romney’s reluctance to release his tax returns!

    From Peter Scheer on HuffPost:

“My two cents: His returns for the years 2000-2005, before Romney had settled on a decision to seek the presidency, will perhaps show that he (and his wife) made generous charitable contributions to liberal causes that, while only slightly to the left of Republicans in Massachusetts, are anathema to the national GOP.

I’m thinking organizations like NARAL, the pro-choice group, or various mainstream environmental organizations that are generally aligned with democrats, and President Obama, on climate change and related issues. The contributions would have been given anonymously (with the donor’s identity likely hidden even from the recipient charities), which would explain why you haven’t already heard about this apostasy.

But this is just a theory. We won’t know what Romney is wishing he didn’t have to divulge until — inevitably, inescapably, ineluctably — he is compelled by the press to divulge it. For it is a given of contemporary politics that one cannot be elected president (or vice president) without laying open one’s tax returns — and much more about personal finances besides — for scrutiny by journalists and voters.

This full-frontal transparency has nothing to do with the law — which, especially in the area of taxes, is highly protective of confidentiality. It has everything to do with citizens’ expectations, created by a demanding press, for disclosure. Journalists’ unremitting demands over the years, not legal requirements, have established the political norm, now a rite of electoral passage, of disclosing candidates’ tax returns.”

  42. Contrasuzie | August 4, 2012 at 12:25 pm

    Just asking.
P.S. Sooo Mr. Mitt: just how DID you manage to stuff all those millions into your tax-loophole IRA account?… while the REST of us poor smucks have strict limits? Inquiring minds want to know.
And you want even MORE tax cuts for you and your rich buddies, Mitt?
WHAT GALL! These fat cats aren’t satisfied- they want it ALL! …EVERYTHING!!
Mitt baby -please- take my advice: if you want to run for dog-catcher THEN keep your precious returns, … and just clean off your car roof. :-)
OTHERWISE, put up, …or shut up and go away ….preferably BEFORE the convention.
The super-rich think that they have the God-given right to do anything they want in this great country -while the REST of us get screwed!
ENOUGH!!! The divine right of kings ended a long long time ago Mitt.
And so should your so-called candidacy.

Sitting on the woods under a beautiful moonlit night watching all of the wonderful animals is very therapeutic. Focusing. on trying to out smart a wild boar helps, temporarily, take ones mind off all other problems in the world. Difficult to explain if you have not experienced. Cave diving helps reduce stress because of thee 100% focus it requires to complete the dives successfully. Unfortunately last night ended as most of my hunts do without a kill but that’s not the point anyway.

Richard, Surely you jest! The last budget proposed by this administration received zip, zero, nada votes from both the Republican and
Democrat side of the aisles. The Post Office just defaulted, Solandra was
loaned half a billion at the insistance of the WH which is now a bankruptcy write-off, and now unemployment just went to 8.3% and has been in this range over 2 years. Mr. Obama’s knowledge about how to revive and stimulate the economy and your concept of what is happening in this economy amount to a fart in a windstorm.

Believe that Mr. Speer with HuffPo in still under the delusion that Journalism exists and the mainstream media has clout. The Chik-fil-A
Appreciation “happening” should open your eyes and his even though you both will keep singing the party line tune.

This whole non-issue about tax returns is nothing but Smoke and Mirrors.
Mr. Obama needed a breather as the last three weeks have been most difficult and embarrassing for his campaign…and the future outlook is no better. Unforunately, Lapdog Harry doesn’t have credibility or a source(at least one who’s willing to go to jail for revealing secure information such a tax records) and the whole scheme is backfiring as the public knows this is the least transparent administration ever. College records for a return…not a deal Mr. Obama can handle…too much downside with no discernable upside; only conjecture.

This will pass quickly…look who just sued Ohio to suppress military voting? Next?

  51. Sandi Saunders | August 4, 2012 at 10:49 pm

I think stanchaz is on to something, Romney and the wealth protectors want to reestablish “The divine right of kings”. They do believe they are the elite, they are special, they should have special privileges, special tax breaks, special tax payer subsidies, special tax avoidance mechanisms, special money protection, special obedience. Just remember all of those haughty posts from Suzie. Yes, Willard et all believe they are special.

  52. Sandi Saunders | August 4, 2012 at 11:03 pm

Leon, you are forgetting, deliberately no doubt, about the literally hostile House of Representatives. 435 of the most dysfunctional people we have ever had accumulated in DC and God help us, that is saying something. The Senate is barely in the Democrat’s hands and given the “super majority” for a vote for potty breaks, they are only a stop-gap. You and many other right wingers want to lay all blame on President Obama and none on this freak show of governance, but the damage is not coming from Obama and the truth verifies that for anyone willing to pay attention. He is President not Superman!

We also have a right to know if Mr. Obama is eligible to serve as POTUS.
Personally, I take him at his word…his book “Dreams of My Father” and
the forged birth certificate posted on line indicate his father was a Kenyan. In 1875 the Supreme Court defined natural born citizen as one
born of TWO (2) (Dos) (II) U.S. citizen parents.(Minor v. Happerset).
If you are so incensed to see Mitt’s returns I’ll bet you’d also want to

How is this different from Obama not releasing his college transcripts? Kerry did, Bush did, what’s the liberal spin on that Casey? Going after people for what they didn’t say? That is an absolute joke.

  57. Bob | August 5, 2012 at 12:17 pm

I wonder if Obama laughs at trivial errors like Solyndra, Fast & Furious, meetings with jobs council in the last 7 months (ZERO), polarizing our country, and the rising unemployment rate and gas and food prices? Maybe he had a chuckle about his golf score yesterday …… again.

  58. Sandi Saunders | August 5, 2012 at 4:22 pm

A bigger question John Brown would be why after all these years of you all whining about Obama releasing college transcripts and every other detail you have insisted you have the right to see, you now side with Romney in withholding his financial information. Hypocrite much? Obama showed 6 years and counting of his tax returns, as soon as Romney does the same, we will join you in asking for trivial 30 year old information.

Unlike you Bob, Obama does not enjoy bad news or cheer things that hurt American workers.

  60. Leon | August 5, 2012 at 6:25 pm

    Sandi@52 and Dan@54,

God bless them everyone…someone needed to stop things like Obamacare happening…now Mr. Obama circumvents the constitution via executive orders…many of which breed new lawsuits. BTW…Obama’s budget proposal
did receive a vote…well at least it was up for a vote…but not a dimocrat or a republican could bring themselves to vote for it…I know,
Mr. Obama is a constitutional scholar(Traitor) not a finance guy. LOL.

Do you two party line echos really, truly believe what you post? How can
you make such personal attacks on people…Rush, Suzie, John, Jeff, Cantor…people you do not know. What right do you think allows you to say a person is not good or intelligent; what right to demean someone’s employment? Appears to me snobbery is a trait of liberals and you both
    represent well!

  61. Dan Casey | August 5, 2012 at 7:35 pm

It is more important to know what grade Obama got in college geometry than whether Mitt Romney paid ANY federal income taxes. Why can’t you people realize that.

Romney is white and uber rich so he gets a pass.

  62. Sandi Saunders | August 5, 2012 at 7:38 pm

Leon, it is called evidence and it is overwhelming for minds not closed by choice as yours seems to be.

  63. Suzie | August 5, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Are the leftwingers accusing Romney of tax evasion? No? Then please shut the hell up. If Mitt took advantage of tax breaks approved by Democrat and Republicans in Congress, then that is considered sound tax strategy. If he had the breaks available, but did not take them, why would we want somebody that dumb running the country?

For those like Richard, Dan, and other libs who are unschooled on tax loopholes, I’ll offer a brief tutorial: Tax breaks are created and encouraged to elicit a behavior that is considered beneficial…e.g. municipal bonds that are federally tax free, or credits for starting a business in a particular area. Of course none of you leftwingers question the outright grants given to so-called “green” companies. This isn’t even a tax break. It’s outright check writing.

So please drop the hypocrisy over Romney. Again, either prove tax fraud…..or shut the HELL up.

  64. Suzie | August 5, 2012 at 8:10 pm

Just remember all of those haughty posts from Suzie. Yes, Willard et all believe they are special.

The top 5% of earners pay more in federal income taxes than the bottom 95%.

Again, hon. When you pay even 1% of what I pay in federal taxes, then and only then can you open your big fat pie hole about equity and personal responsibility.

It’s a hell of a society when the sedentary moochers can sit on their brains all day and demand those who bear almost all the burden bear even MORE.

    “Pay my health care!”
    “Pay my retirement!”
    “Buy my food!”
    “Pay my rent!”

    Blah. Blah. Makes me sick.

  65. Suzie | August 5, 2012 at 8:15 pm

0bama won’t provide his college transcripts.

He couldn’t get a teaching job in the Roanoke County Public Schools or any other professional position by withholding that kind of information.

Yet the leftwing morons think he should have the most important job in the world.

  66. Sandi Saunders | August 5, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Leon, you questioning someone else’s comprehension is like Suzie questioning someone else’s credibility. It simply does not bear scrutiny.

  67. Suzie | August 5, 2012 at 8:18 pm

Let’s be honest. 0bama smoked pot on college and failed some classes. That’s why he can’t his transcripts. He was a drug addict who more than likely was in rehab. That’s why he can’t release his medical records.

He was passed along by these liberal institutions for one reason; He was a black liberal activist. He didn’t earn anything. He “didn’t do that”.

  68. Sandi Saunders | August 5, 2012 at 8:57 pm

You can tell when Suzie is on the ropes, she lashes out and tries to change the conversation. We are not running for President and this is not about “tax evasion” it is about the credibility of someone who once had the gall to demand someone else’s tax returns be released now refusing to do the same. It is about (and we all know this one is a stranger to you, dear), integrity, credibility and responsibility. Romney and you both are lacking.

BTW, your “pie hole” is no better than ours. Just uglier.

  69. Sandi Saunders | August 5, 2012 at 9:00 pm

Well, if you say so Suzie, we all know it has to be baloney.

  70. Contrasuzie | August 5, 2012 at 9:38 pm

Sandi, you’re right about Screwzie coming more unglued than she already is. She also omits words and makes lots of typos when she’s in a fit.

  71. Leon | August 5, 2012 at 10:10 pm

    Sandi,

Go read you book. You make no point with your verbal vitriol. You, of all
posters would have the gall to call someone else close minded. You do not
even think for yourself but simply echo what someone else has said or pull
out the insult card. Why waste the time and effort?

While I realize the problem liberals (and Mr. Obama) have is that he has
no record to run on (and the record he does have is the only good use for
the Roanoke Times, as a fish wrapper); however, your last three posts on this thread are really pathetic. You say nothing; only insult others. How unhappy you must be.

    Sandi@52…

Thank God the Obama administration and the Democrat control of the Senate
are about to end. Mr. Obama can’t even count on the black vote now that
the black pastors have stated they do not and will not support same sex
marriage. The move in Ohio to restrict the military vote has already generated a lawsuit while Mr. Obama DOJ is trying to figure out how to keep contemptible Holder out of jail. The Fat Lady hasn’t sung yet but
she is warming up. I believe that this administration will lead in one
statistic…the most members of any administration to serve prison terms
consecutively…Fast & Furious(Obama lied, people died), Solyandra, GSA,
LIBOR scandal, DOJ unenforcement of Immigration law & DOMA law and the DOJ attempt to thwart State Voter ID laws are all crimes. Suspect we will
be able to add numerous voter fraud charges with the upcoming election; as
this is clearly the intent of the Libs otherwise the DOJ wouldn’t be filing litigation against voter ID laws.

Wait, I’m sure all those classmates of his in H.S. and college can verify how well he did and would be glad to say they went to classes with the President. What do they say about him??

    “Pay my health care!”
    “Pay my retirement!”
    “Buy my food!”
    “Pay my rent!”

    You forgot the last one…

“Why? Because I just want a little something like those people that work hard have.”

#68 You an also tell when something that another right winger has posted is a complete fabrication or an unconscionable twisting of the facts — suzie congratulates them on the great post. 100 percent indicator that troll thinks the poor soul needs somebody to attempt to prop him or her up because the pummeling has gotten so bad.

  76. gdad | August 5, 2012 at 11:54 pm

#67 Let’s be honest, George Bush did coke and got nailed for a DUI.

  77. Bob | August 6, 2012 at 8:46 am

Let’s be honest. Barack did coke, pot and whatever else in high school, admitted by himself. He ascended into government via nefarious means. He had no experience. That’s what really gets me. Community Organizer. Can’t you Obamabots understand just how weak this is? Jr senator, who usually voted present, or not at all. VERY little government experience. And now we’re still running on Blame Bush 4 years later.

Can we talk about jobs …… real jobs. Can we go back to the root of the problem? NAFTA.

Mitt’s tax returns are just another pitiful diversion to keep Obama’s failures out of the front page.

  78. Dan Casey | August 6, 2012 at 9:20 am

Let’s be serious. Obama was elected state senator, then later U.S. senator, then later president. There was nothing “nefarious” about his rise in politics.

  79. K | August 6, 2012 at 10:06 am

“… Blame Bush 4 years later” yep.. 8 years of mistakes don’t go away overnight.

  80. Sandi Saunders | August 6, 2012 at 10:56 am

Leon and Bob are clearly delusional and no insult is enough. Your dispicable lack of honesty, integrity and common sense is astounding, even for right wingers. And you dare to say that I “echo what someone else has said or pull
out the insult card”? What the hell do you think you are doing? Lies are not truth because you want them to be!

  81. Sandi Saunders | August 6, 2012 at 11:59 am

At law, if a person in control of evidence refuses to produce the evidence, then the jury is instructed that there is a presumption that the evidence would be against the party failing to produce. It is called the “Missing Evidence” instruction.

Well looky here, “A part of the problem is that each state has its own rules for absentee voting, and those rules can change in the middle of an election season.

Funny how one day we want to enforce the rules and another day we want to break them eh? “In Virginia, for example, the federal write-in ballot required a witness’ signature and address. That proved confusing for soldiers overseas because there was no box provided for a witness address.

So who exactly is trying to disenfranchise the troops and overseas nationals?

“Look, I’m at the start of my administration. One nice thing about the situation I find myself in is that I will be held accountable. You know, I’ve got four years. A year from now I think people are going to see that we’re starting to make some progress. But there’s still going to be some pain out there. If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

I took the liberty of making your post more accurate, so here’s the correction to your post…

Let’s be honest.[Bush] did coke, pot and whatever else in high school, admitted by himself. He ascended into government via nefarious means [his father's influence, big oil donations, quiting the governorship before his term ended and losing the presidential popular vote but anointed by the Supreme Court]. He had no experience [running an oil company nor a baseball team, ergo a state]. That’s what really gets me. [For goodness sakes, he wasn't even a] Community Organizer. Can’t you [RWers] understand just how weak this is? [Abysmal businessman, part time governor, and US president who took 967 vacation days in two terms or 32% of his total time in office]. [a president] who usually [wasn't] present, not at all. VERY little government experience. And now we’re still [suffering because of Bush's
    8 years//90 months in office],so, Blame Bush…

    Your welcome.

  85. Sandi Saunders | August 6, 2012 at 9:07 pm

John Brown, where in that did Obama say that the obstruction and resistance from Congress was going to cause him not to make more progress in three years much less have it done? BTW, by any measure, he has made some progress. No, of course you are not capable of holding two thoughts simultaneously. My bad.

  86. John Brown | August 7, 2012 at 9:18 am

@Sandi Saunders – The only progress he’s made has been in the wrong direction. Barack Obama is the worst president in recent history and the best thing to happen to ole Jimmy Carter in 30 years.

  87. Leon | August 7, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Sandi, wrong again. NO progress. Unemployment still up, still losing jobs.

  88. gdad | August 7, 2012 at 5:11 pm

#76 At least Obama was honest about some of his youthful ways. The Shrub dude got caught trying to cover his up. What an honest fellow.
