    An evening wasted; I’m sitting here looking at my fleshly charged 18V cordless drill and the rusty drill bit that I could have productively been using to do some home dentistry with, and instead I fritter away a perfectly good Thursday watching Mitt flex his eyebrows.

    i wanted to believe in Romney in the beginning. country is in very bad shape. you see more people selling cars on the road traveling than normal. newer models but kinda reminds ya of the depression. unemployment is through the roof. we wont get away from china and their crap. too many politicians bought off. that being said- they go and get ryan on the ticket. needed a minority or a female to get votes. very dumb move. obama can go fishing till november. mitt is clueless. is that the best two the republicans can come up with in the whole united states? obama will slide for 4 more years doing the minimum. lame ducky. but i will vote for him. reason- lesser of two evils. in 2016 we will have environmental improvements but no jobs and the banks will be spiraling outta control. sounds pretty dim, huh? what do you want me to say- happy days are here again? only for those damn chinese….

    Romney tried to make himself appear human. Almost succeeded then torpedoed himself with his war mongering. America is sick of war. 2 generations of our youth have been spent in constant conflict. I love our soldiers, but I hate our wars. These wars need to be ended and the resources of this nation focused on rebuilding America. We do not need to re-ignite the cold war with Russia, piss China off and have them call in our debt and top it off with War in Iran. No thank you, I’ll stick with the devil I know.

    I would rate Romney’s speech as better than expected but not good enough.

    Dan Casey, and most of the rest of the media have no clue, and don’t want Mitt Romney or a Republican in office, no matter who it might be. All you guys can do is down play and criticize his speech and what he said or didn’t say. Um what promises did Prez NObama make 4 years ago?? Has accomplished any of them, besides NObamacare??? NOPE!!! Jobs are worse, economy worse, healthcare worse, homeland security worse… I mean come on people… NObama has done nothing for us, except take family trips in Airforce One, and play golf, and allow dictators of other countries tell US what to do… Do you really think that if he gets voted back in he is gonna do anymore?? Think about it… The first 4 years, he just has to lay low and pretend he is trying to do so much, but try and keep his head down so that he can get re-elected by not pissing anyone off.. The next 4 years, what does he have to loose?? NOTHING!!!! So he is gonna do what he wants when he wants, because he doesn’t care if you get mad or not…

    Clint Eastwood the ICON was correct, when someone’s not doing their job, you replace them… It happens everyday here at my work, and would happen to me.. If I don’t do my job, I am fired and replaced by someone else… And if they don’t do it, the same fate awaits them… Just because NObama was voted in 4 years ago, does not mean he must be voted in again.. He has not done his job, so its time to try something else.

    And you say Mitt isn’t giving you answers… I would rather him just tell me what he wants to do, like he is doing, than to give me open promises like the last joker NObama did, and then not do anything..

    And stop bashing Mr. Eastwood.. I thought he was great.. The man is 82 years old, and gets up on stage in primetime tv, and just wings it.. I give him respect for that.. He doesn’t need a teleprompter, or a speech written for him, he just speaks from the heart, and was actually a nice change of pace.. Not a typical all facts, and perfectly worded script, told so professionally… Just a guy up there speaking and being funny..

    And hello??? You wanna dog Mr. Ryan for a few fact mistakes?? Um, were you guys not present when DUMBA$$ Biden thought Danville was in North Carolina, or that he told Tech students, we are going to lead the world into the 20th century??? Talk about needing an education… I thought you were supposed to be smart to be a high gov’t official… Guess not..

    So before you all keep bashing Mr. Romney, Mr. Ryan, and Mr. Eastwood, take a look at the other side the fence and see what you have, and have had for the past 4 years… And I mean truly look, don’t look through your Liberal Eyeglasses, look with the naked eye…. Are we really any better off than we were 4 years ago?? Has our current President really done anything the last 4 years?? Is it time we give someone else a chance??? And hey, since everyone, including our current president seems to thing that jobs in America is what is needed to kick start the economy, then why not let someone who is a business leader, and has made a fortune starting and running and saving companies a chance to help recover America…

    Thank you for allowing me to express my concerns, and for the record, I am neither a Republican nor Democrat..I am an Independent…I am myself, and I vote for who I think will do the best job, and again like Clint said, if they ain’t doing the job, its time for them to go and give someone else a crack at it.. Its time for everyone to stop playing party lines and fighting with each other, and start working together to fix the problem..

    He will get my vote based off his history of success. What has B.O. succeeded in? I think everyone is concerned with the “perfect” candidate that will fix everything. That’s not coming folks. The media hyped B.O. into the second coming of the messiah, but they media is the only place he is revered as so. Romney made a good point about saying all the things that B.O. could say, but the one thing he couldn’t say is that the country is better off 4 years after his first term.

    Mission accomplished for anyone who watched all or most of the speakers last night. Clint’s shtick was uncomfortable at best but immediately forgotten once Rubio made his speech. Solid performance to show the human and honest side of Mitt. Chalk another 3 points onto Mitt’s landslide victory.

    Once he again he failed to deliver. He told us he had a plan to get 12 Million people working but he failed to tell us the plan. Since Romney is such a “great” businessman, I’m suprised he so horrible at interviews. If he were applying for CEO of Bain Capital and he told them he had a plan but then didn’t tell them the plan he wouldn’t make it back for a second interview.

    Romney claims that republicans wanted Obama to succeed. Mitch McConnell stood up in Congress and for the record said that the Republican Congressional agenda would be solely focused on guaranteeing Obama’s failure and the denial of a second term. The combination of Bush policies and ensuing Republican obstructionism has severely hindered the recovery.

    As I said yesterday, liberals and the truth have never met. So how could they possibly understand or know each other?

    This was my favorite line from last night.

    “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. MY promise…is to help you and your family.”

    Great for many reasons. It illustrates how absurd Obama’s ego and rhetoric was in 2008, and how devastatingly blind and impotent Obama has been with regards to America’s REAL ISSUES.

    Obama is the Wizard of Oz…a guy who lied to get where he is without ever actually accomplishing anything. An insecure snake-oil salesman just like his Mom and absentee biological father. A guy who uses FEAR and intimidation to scare away opposition. In the end…a sad, sad failure of a little man who is forced live in reality.

    I would gladly accept Obama’s apology and I would buy him the biggest hot-air balloon I could find.

    How can one argue that Obama has NOT raised taxes on the middle class? Obama’s Healthcare program was deemed a tax, thanks to his attorneys who argued that it *was* a tax. That, Mr. Casey, amounts to a massive middle class tax increase.

    As a side point, I actually believe that he included all the specifics he needed regarding job growth. If the US pumps up its domestic energy production through the various ways that Romney cited in his speech, many experts have gone on record as saying that we could return to $1 gasoline for the next 30-40 years. I believe that cheap, domestically produced energy would result in a huge boom period for our economy…beside the jobs that would be produced in the energy sector, it would free up incredible amounts of capital for business growth and job growth. It would also immediately help the lower class, by lowering food costs.

    I think it was Paul Ryan who put it this way: Obama is too concerned about dividing up the pie differently. Rather than looking at it in those terms, he should be concerned about growing the size of the pie, then everyone wins. I believe that cheap, domestic energy would do exactly that.

    Unfortunately, Dan, you are wrong again. It took me 30 seconds to locate the Obama quote on the oceans and planet via Google. Obama said this exact statement in his acceptance speech in St. Paul, MN at the 2008 Democratic Convention:

The way he phrased it was due to him being elected. Google it man. The leftys on this blog are in the Twilight Zone. How can you not say it is time for someone else to have a go at it? How can you say we can handle 4 more years of the current administration? What plan does President Obama have for jobs? Spend more money? Create more debt?     Kristen, the answers to your question is: No, this is not unknown to them. But many of them are desperate to ignore it — so desperate that some RWers sponsor legislation about coastline studies that outlaw terms like “rising sea levels.”

    Didja get that? They want to outlaw the use of such words in state legislation. It makes you wonder if one day, one of them won’t put up a bill that outlaws used of the term “contraception” in legislation referencing the pill.

    The RW keeps spouting that Romney is their hope for jobs,m yet he has no history of creating jobs. He is a hedge fund investment banker who keeps his assets off shore to keep from paying taxes. He disavows ownership of Bain Capital yet keeps getting profits from them in his off shore trusts. His “former” company is what put us into recession destroying 23 million jobs though their reckless investments.

    Claiming Mitt is a job creator is like greasy hair in the drain is a plumber. Mitt and his banking friends are the problem, not the solution.

    And that is the RWer code in a nutshell. Belief trumps fact no matter how you cut it, provided you have enough money to spread those spurious beliefs.

    Remember how hard, and for how many decades, the tobacco industry and its hired scientists fought the facts that smoking cigarettes was bad for your health? We are seeing an almost exactly replay of that with climate science.

    Today, even the most hardline RWers accept that smoking greatly increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, and other maladies. It’s not even disputed. But it wasnt’ always that way.

    I will never understand why any politician, Republican or Democrat, thinks that having an actor/actress publically speak out for them is a good thing. The democrats tend to do this more than republicans, but they both do it.

    Actors and actresses are famous because they are good at pretending to be someone else. They are basically famous for lying, and pretending to be something that they aren’t. Why would that be the person that any politician wants to speak out for them?

    At this time 4 years ago, I had some RWer friends who were saying this almost exactly. Then Hurricane Sarah struck and the RWers were totally stunned. Some of them continue to insist she didn’t take down the GOP ticket.

    There is the mantra that Republican will mindlessly repeat to themselves between now and November like a new convert to transcendental meditation.

    It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true, though.

    When Obama took over, the economy was actually shrinking and unemployment was rising steeply. Corporate profits were in the toilet and half of many people’s retirement had gone down the drain. The economy was collapsing.

    Since then, the Dow has doubled, and the economy is growing, albeit slowly. Corporate profits are at an all-time high. Unemployment has grown a bit under Obama and remains uncomfortably high. But it’s not rising any more, as badly as the GOP wishes it were. Some sectors are going gangbusters. In the energy sector employment is booming.

    We all wish unemployment was lower. But the GOP tied much of Obama’s hands at improving that. It’s not his fault they stopped progress on that, it’s theirs. That’s just one of the reasons not to hand the White House over to the GOP. There are many more.

    James Swingle, again, your belief that the Dems had control of all three branches in 2008-10 doesn’t necessarily make it true. Keep in mind that belief does not necessarily equate to reality.

    The reality is, there were 56 Dems in the Senate coming out of the 2008 election. There were two independents who caucused with the Dems. At best, that gives them 58 votes.

    In the Senate, control = 60, no matter the party. That’s simply a fact.

    Your statment IS factually correct. The Dems had the majority in the Senate, they had the majority in the House, and they controlled the Presidency. So, to answer your question: YES, the Democrats did have CONTROL during that time period. Dan incorrectly implies that one must have 60 for control, but that is for a filibuster-proof supermajority. For the most part, as history shows, neither party is required to have 60 in the Senate to pass a bill. Most of the time, the party in CONTROL is usually able to get a few of their opponents to step across the aisle.

    It’s as if there is only one thing to believe in and if it’s not the opinion of either party then it truly must not be a thing at all. These last four years have been horrible for my industry. Sales have plummeted and I hear daily that until we get someone else in its gonna continue to go down hill. Like it or not the folks that make the rules seldom know what the hell they’re doing. I call on real business owners with real life experience. They pay real workers for doing real work and absolutely believe in charity…unless its decided for them. Weve got to put people to work and if we can get the Gov to get off people’s asses about doing it we can make a turn around. If we continue down the path of easy to get entitlements, and the belief that we all deserve a consolation prize just for showing up we will continue this downward spiral. My suggestion to those of you who wait on Dan here to tell you how to vote. Go out and read the healthcare bill. Look at The TSA and what they are doing to our transportation industry. Prices keep going up and so does unemployment. Eventually this watering hole is gonna dry up and we’ll all be waiting on the Gov’s kool aid. Wake up
    and regardless of who you select, think for yourself, study the real facts an make a somewhat educated decision.

That those 500000 jobs lost would likely have created at least 500000 more jobs due to increased denands and spending power.l That those 1 million jobs altogether wuld have the unemployment rate down to closer to 7 %. If those are your points, then I agree with you. The truth matters, If those are not your points, then you don’t know how to interpret figures.

    Thus, unemployment must be kept high, because nothing will persuade an electorate to vote against an incumbent president like that will.

    democratic groups have just handed out 1000 yard signs to go up in people’s yards starting next week with the convention. So look for them comng soon to a yard near you. And I was just out in SW County and counted 13 Obama bumoer stickers along 419 ans Brambleton Ave. in just over five minutes. So I guess blindness is one of your issues along with IQ?

    OK, I will admit I fell asleep during the Eastwood thing and missed Romney’s speech. (I plan to watch it after dinner). I saw some clips on the news this morning and it looked pretty good.
    The bottom line is that Romney is “real” and cares. He could be just fine taking his money and protecting himself and his family wealth but “inside” he does not want to see our country move deeper into the abyss. Consider that vs Obama who wants the “win” but not the “job”, wants the “trappings” but not the responsibility; it has been proven in the past 4 years. He has had his chance, and most non political intelligent people understand that.
    The “best” Obama can hope for is that in the annals of history, Carter continues to rank above him as the “worst president ever elected”. (is it humiliating when you can’t even be first at being worst?)

    I love Eastwood but his hairdresser did not do him justice, I did not realize he was 82. Many at that age don’t understand that they can’t do what they did decades ago (any with parents or grandparents will understand). Hell I am in my 50’s and get it… maybe I’ll forget… lol

    A perfect ending to Eastwood’s “speech?” would have been “I am over 80 years old, and I may have babbled a bit so I will close now because “A man has got to know his limitations (Magnum Force 1973)”; unfortunately Obama does not know ”HIS” limitations as a leader and needs to be replaced; so on November 6th “make my day” and vote Mitt Romney…

    James Swingle, again, your belief that the Dems had control of all three branches in 2008-10 doesn’t necessarily make it true. Keep in mind that belief does not necessarily equate to reality.

    The reality is, there were 56 Dems in the Senate coming out of the 2008 election. There were two independents who caucused with the Dems. At best, that gives them 58 votes.

    In the Senate, control = 60, no matter the party. That’s simply a fact.

    I’m 84, not 85.  I’ve explained that to you before.  Try to keep up.

    There’s a remarkable product called eyeglasses that correct and enhance a person’s vision.  I wear mine when I drive.  As I was on a road with a posted speed limit of 25 mph, the passing cars were not traveling so fast that I couldn’t read the two Romney stickers that I saw.  Also, because the triple R logo is pretty recognizable as Romney’s, it would have been very easy to discern that they were Romney stickers, even if I hadn’t had my glasses on.

    Now, what was that you said about rightwing conservatives always stopping to help a motorist in trouble?

    #170 Strange thing, 13 suns, both my parents, who are in their 80s, would also be able to read bumper stickers going by at 25 mph, particularly when we’re only talking about a political sticker with a name on it. In fact, I’m almost legally blind without glasses (20/20 with them) and I’d bet I could still tell the difference in Romney and Obama bumper stickers as a car goes by.

    The big question is — why does suzie hate older people so much? She keeps pushing this stereotype of older folks as blind, deaf, helpless individuals with dementia. Maybe this is the way her parents are and so naturally all older people are like that. Or maybe her parents aren’t around any longer and she’s bitter about that. I’m not sure, but it’s really sad to see her continually make fun of an octogenarian. Especially since, I assume, one of her own goals is to be an octogenarian one day.

    I have said a number of times (and I think on this blog as well as other blogs & forums) that this will be yet another POTUS vote for the less objectionable of the two options offered, for me.

    I don’t dislike the POTUS. I don’t dislike the GOP nominee. However, I don’t trust either one very much.

    It will likely come down to who had the lesser objectionable attack ads and/or outright lies about the opposition. As I am still catching up on this blog, having been mostly offline over the long weekend, I would offer the following (in light of the thread on Jefferson) “…wherever the people are well informed they can be trusted with their own government.” — to Richard Price The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Princeton: Princeton University Press. IMHO, Jefferson’s “the people” don’t include the Citizens United’s best goverment money can buy. As to his “well informed”, IMHO, that is in great part the responsible of the Free Press envisioned by 1A. On yours and other journalist’s shoulders rest a great responsibility for the future of this great country.

    As to politicos and business leaders alike, I think nearly all are too focused on the short-term return for/to themselves — the politicos on the next election and business leaders on their next bonus (both w/o regard to the long term health of the country or the company).

    IOW, both sides play the 10A argument according to the issue being addressed — do not maintain a consistent definition/understanding of Federalism.

    As always, YMMV — but the above is a good snapshot of me.
