Retired teachers are getting the shaft, she writes
I am a retired Virginia public educator. Today I received in the mail a letter from the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).
The contents are unbelievable! According to Robert P. Schultze, Director of VRS, a mistake was made in figuring the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) in 2009 for Virginia retirees.
The bottom line is that the state is going to DEDUCT $457.95 from my state provided life insurance in order to “correct” this overpayment UNLESS I remit them a check in that amount by November 15.
To say I am livid is an understatement. I have always lived by this creed: I am more than willing to pay for my own mistakes, but I’ll be damned if I am going to pay for yours.
I do not know if you will hear from other retirees, but I hope you will. I urge you to address this issue in your column. If you would like a scanned copy of the letter I received, let me know and I’ll email it to you.
