Wow – even though David Brooks believes Romney is a “decent man” – with friends like this, who needs enemies? Here’s some of Brooks’ comments:

    “Thurston Howell Romney”

“Romney, who criticizes President Obama for dividing the nation, divided the nation into two groups: the makers and the moochers. ”

“First, it suggests that he really doesn’t know much about the country he inhabits. Who are these freeloaders? Is it the Iraq war veteran who goes to the V.A.? Is it the student getting a loan to go to college? Is it the retiree on Social Security or Medicare? ”

“It suggests that Romney doesn’t know much about the culture of America. [...] America remains one of the hardest-working nations on earth.”

‘The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees.”

“But, as a description of America today, Romney’s comment is a country-club fantasy. It’s what self-satisfied millionaires say to each other. It reinforces every negative view people have about Romney. ”

The Seven Deadly Sins of John Brennan

What Obama’s high priest of targeted killings doesn’t want you to know.
    BY MICAH ZENKO | SEPTEMBER 18, 2012

Last week, I introduced readers to John Brennan, the U.S. president’s closest advisor for intelligence and counterterrorism issues. Although Americans know little about Brennan, he plays an essential role in shaping and implementing the expansive, unprecedented targeted killing of suspected terrorists and militants. He is, the New York Times reported, citing administration officials, the “priest whose blessing has become indispensable” to Obama. After Brennan lost out on the nomination for CIA director, he became the White House’s homeland security advisor and deputy national security advisor for counterterrorism. As Michael Hayden — the holdover CIA director until Leon Panetta was confirmed — once observed, “John Brennan’s the actual national intelligence director.”

Not only does Brennan oversee Obama’s vision of targeted killings, but he is their public face, defending the policies in major speeches, appearing on Sunday morning talk shows, and providing on- and off-the-record interviews to journalists. According to current and former administration officials, Brennan has embraced this role because he believes that the United States must be more transparent about the legal and ethical foundations for targeted killings. Whereas George W. Bush’s administration never discussed any aspects of its targeted-killing policies, Barack Obama’s administration has been marginally more forthcoming, beginning with its first official acknowledgment of the practice of targeted killings by drones in a speech this April by Brennan.

Given that Obama authorized Brennan to play such an extraordinary role, it is useful to examine what Brennan has said, especially because, since he’s a presidential advisor, Congress will never compel him to answer questions in a hearing. After a close reading, what emerge are seven half-truths and direct contradictions between stated U.S. policies and actual practices.

    Thoughts? Thoughts on multiple levels:

How can the neocons claim that the current administration is not doing what it is doing? How can they claim that the last administration did more?

What more would the neocons have the US do? What more would they be doing were they in power? What more will they do, if they they win in November?

In today’s world what is an enemy combatant? What rights does a sovereign nation have when there enemy combatants within their borders?

Is this unprecedented targeted killing of suspected terrorists and militants ethical / moral? Who should the judge, jury, hangman be?

What would the US’s reaction be if an Islamism nation took out a known militant anti-Islamic groups leader/member within the USA? With “collateral damage” of/to US citizens?

Harking back to Mark Jurkevich’s last thread, has this administration shredded America’s moral authority to lead?

Mittster spends half the time whining that not enough people pay taxes, and the other half whining that we need to lower taxes. Inconsistent much? It’s not that he doesn’t stand for anything…it’s that he stands for everything, simultaneously.

Romney is saying the 47% freeloader class should start doing their part, while the folks who pay the freight should get a break.

It’s not that hard if you aren’t a bimbo.

  10. Kristen | September 19, 2012 at 11:29 am

This is the most awesome part of the Breitbart piece.

“Whether Romney is right or wrong about the “47 percent” of Americans he says have become dependent on government–he stood by his May remarks on Monday evening–he may have been taken out of context.”

So, well…Rmoney is standing by the comments that he may or may not have made and that we’re accusing MJ of creating with editing. Even though he may be right and stands by them, we should treat with “contempt” the story that he made these comments. That he stands by, and was right with, but still are fake and concocted.

  11. Suzie | September 19, 2012 at 11:30 am

Mother Jones now says the infamous tape is incomplete. Ooops…Possibly an edit.

So now this rag joins CBS and NBC for selective editing, trying to present a false narrative and hiding the truth. This is called LYING.

But that’s what the 0bama media does best.

    Apologies?

  12. Kristen | September 19, 2012 at 11:33 am

DaveHicks, the neocons are in a tough spot. They can hardly complain that Obama’s being too aggressive in trying to rid the world of evildoers because that conflicts with their narrative that he’s not doing anything at all.

As for “this administration” shredding whatever moral authority we may ever have had…that ship sailed long ago. We now claim the high ground based on might, not right.

CONTEST: IMAGINE WHAT ROMNEY SAID IN THE 2-MINUTE GAP

Mitt: “And the president, why, he’s watered down welfare requirements. Now, there’s no limit on the length of time those no-good, lazy, money-grubbing freeloaders can stay on the public dole. I heard about this one lady on Chicago’s South Side. That’s Obama’s town, you know. She has four Cadillacs — my wife only has TWO! And she has eighty names, thirty addresses, twelve Social Security cards and is collecting veteran’s benefits on four non-existing deceased husbands. And she is collecting Social Security on her cards. She’s got Medicaid, getting food stamps, and she is collecting welfare under each of her names. Her tax-free cash income is over $150,000.”

Ever buy a beer at the Boy/Girl Scouts staffed stand on the third base side? Maybe at one of the University of Maryland home football games played there? If so I may have sold you a beer. Speaking of University of Maryland home football games, we set a stadium record at our stand for the amount of beer sold at an event at a UMD game.

FWIIW, last night’s/this morning’s Orioles 4 vs. Mariners 2 game was 18 inning ending at 4AM eastern and put us back in a tie for first place in the AL East.

Restaurants close all the time – it’s hardly a function of this particular economy. Other high-end more modern places have supplanted The Library, which from all reports has been on the downhill slide for a while.

We will no doubt undergo a rush of frozen yogurt places going belly-up in the not-too-distant-future as well. Again, not the economy’s fault.

  29. Sandi Saunders | September 19, 2012 at 1:13 pm

You are correct Scott W #25, that is why so many people say that even President Ronald Reagan would no longer be welcome in the TP/GOP. They have gone tribal and extremist and it is sad.

William Quesenberry, you are not a parasite. I go to work every day happy that my tax dollars are spent helping my friends and family who may need it. That is what makes this the greatest nation on earth. Don’t you let anyone tell you different!

  31. Warren | September 19, 2012 at 1:28 pm

It is not unlikely that the brief gap in the recording was a purely technical result of repositioning, or a memory card function, or similar matters during the taping. In no way could there have been a false recording created of the footage that has been seen. Poster #11 offers no alternative to what our eyes and ears show Rmoney saying, because there is none. In this case, facts have a progressive bias. Poster #11 should apologize for being dishonestly hyperpartisan. Often.

I wonder what the RWers will say now that Chick-fil-A has promised not to fund anti-gay organizations…will they line up around the block to show their support?

    September 19, 2012
A Chicago alderman who made national headlines during the summer for opposing a Chick-fil-A in his increasingly trendy Northwest Side ward has reversed course, saying he will let the fast-food chain open a store in Logan Square.

Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno, said the restaurant has agreed to include a statement of respect for all sexual orientations in an internal document and promised that its not-for-profit arm would not contribute money to groups that oppose gay marriage.

“The Civil Rights Agenda, which dubs itself the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group in Illinois, said Chick-fil-A agreed in meetings to stop donating to groups such as Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage. Such groups oppose same-sex marriage.”

  35. Shrillary | September 19, 2012 at 3:43 pm

And even with an ocean between us, our European allies see Romney for what he is:

MITT ROMNEY’S 47% G\GAFFE MAKES HIM 100% UNSUITABLE TO BE PRESIDENT
It is Romney’s only unerring quality that he constantly affirms his stereotype. And this could be the week that sinks his challenge
But on Monday night, we learned something new – and profoundly unsettling – about him: he may very well also be a bad person.
    [...]
They suggest a level of meanness and divisiveness in Romney’s personal character that is disturbing – even disqualifying for the nation’s highest office.

Can’t view Dan’s article because you have to join the Trib to continue reading, but it appears that Moreno dropped the fight against Chick-Fil-A instead and says he is satisfied with the level of respect that CFA gives to LBGTRJHLOPM and any other letters…

  38. Debbie | September 19, 2012 at 4:33 pm

UTR, IMO the Library closed because they became irrelevant. Plenty of other high end restaurants have opened in the last few years and are still open. Tastes change. It’s sad that they closed, but I doubt the economy affected their patrons. More likely age did. Their loyal customers from years ago are probably dead now or too old to go anywhere.

  39. Dan Casey | September 19, 2012 at 4:35 pm

MMM, You don’t have to join the Trib to read the article. If you X out of the box that pops up it takes you to the front page. Click on the relevant headline and it takes you to the story.

But I reckon it’s more convenient for you to pretend you can’t read it. Your distortion goes down more smoothly that way, eh?

  40. sherry | September 19, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Dan, this is the quote from HuffPO
Said to be titled “Chick-fil-A: Who We Are,” the fast food chain’s “internal memo” reportedly states that they will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.”
I didn’t see anything about changing their donations. Only the continued promise to treat everyone with dignity and respect

Frank, the consulates are not “U.S. Soil”, nor are those of other countries over here. If they were, you’d have to support the right of the Saudi Arabian consulate in Houston to drill for oil a few blocks from the Houston Country Club, or the Houston Chinese consulate to conduct nuclear weapons testing on their property.

Your rage is based in ignorance, and boy, does it show.

  61. Art Hill | September 19, 2012 at 8:40 pm

    Yo Frank,

Thiesson is a boil on the ass of humanity. At least the prez wasn’t reading “My Pet Goat” during the attack. Besides, aren’t you part of the 47%? Your opinion doesn’t count, remember?

  62. Art Hill | September 19, 2012 at 8:52 pm

    “Ooooo. Tell us which thread!”

    Tuesday open thread.

  63. Scott M. | September 19, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Frank, why don’t you e-mail the White House to ask that question?

  64. scott | September 19, 2012 at 9:32 pm

Kristen, He’s why I wont go back to the RT boards either.

He’s a self-righteous, arrogant, four-letter word who knows about as much about building a thriving community of people sharing differing ideas as Mitt Romney knows about what it’s like to live your life gay.

At least when Dan Radmacher was monitoring, the free exchange of ideas wasn’t subject to what amounted to his mood swings.

That and you’d think he’d proofread what he posts. He Gets so bent out of shape when there’s typos, or grammar and posting errors and people point them out. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard “HEY, Give me a Break, its early.”

The RT blog is dead to me. They should just sunset and give John R a column to spout his views as a replacement for their last nutjob columnist, Linda Whitlock.

  65. Frank | September 19, 2012 at 9:49 pm

hey shrill, …i can’t believe your infatuation with david brooks! well, yes i can, ’cause his most recent claim to fame is slobbering to his readers about what he thinks of THE CREASE in obama’s pants! yeah-boy! he had the whatever it takes to make news about THAT!

i suspect that’s the kind of journalist ol’ dano aspires to… be. what fame! and for what?

  66. Suzie | September 19, 2012 at 10:37 pm

#11 Oh, you mean like the right did with Obama’s Roanoke comments?

Actually the full context made Idiot Boy’s remarks sound even worse.

  67. Suzie | September 19, 2012 at 10:41 pm

Aww, Is Kristen getting her posts deleted? Welcome to our world, hon.

It’s probablly rough for liberal bloggers who used to having protection from the mods.

  68. Suzie | September 19, 2012 at 10:52 pm

    Again?? Really?? Civility??

Still waiting for your criticism of the other folks, Scott M. Haven’t seen it yet.

  69. Suzie | September 19, 2012 at 10:55 pm

#1 Of course in today’s world of extreme GOP, David Brooks is looked upon as one of those old fashioned conservatives; a guy who is familiar with the terms compromise, general welfare etc. These people are frowned upon by today’s GOP.

Where are the Democrats who compromise or act for the general welfare. Haven’t seen ‘em yet.

Brooks isn’t even a conservative. That’s how he can work for the New York Times.

  70. gdad | September 19, 2012 at 11:09 pm

    #57 This one, Dan.

And it appears to me that this Michael character is without question inviting somebody to call the SS office. On top of denying he cares about it — except for the 7 posts he’s made now. Bad moderating going on over there.

  71. gdad | September 19, 2012 at 11:13 pm

    #39 MMM distorting something? Never!!!

  72. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 12:24 am

Distorting? I was quoting the headline that Dan’s failed link reverts to. That is all.
    Apparently Sherry read it too.

    Swing and a miss, Dan.

  73. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 12:40 am

There is no relevant headline on the page that comes up after clicking the ‘x’. Just a box AGAIN linking to a subscribers only area to read that link about the gays and the CFA.

    Strike two, Dan.

  74. Dan Casey | September 20, 2012 at 12:53 am

MMM, it worked for me. You’re doing something wrong.

What, you want me to drive over there and show you how to do it? Jeesh.

  75. Kristen | September 20, 2012 at 7:51 am

scott, I’m not asking him for quarter or to protect me from anyone else there…I just want a shot at a response. I don’t curse or offer to “meet” anyone to straighten things out. I just wanted to point out how moronic it was for Michael to sit there pretending to take seriously the notion of me actually threatening anyone. For days. With the local SS phone number, because obviously they’re going to take him really, really seriously. Nope! Nothing.

A couple of weeks ago, one of their guest columnists called the product of another of their guest columnists “garbage” – IN THE PAPER. I pointed out that as posters, we weren’t allowed to call any of the editorials “garbage” (I’ve tried), so how did the author of that piece get away with it? Guess what? Comment never saw the light of day.

  76. Kristen | September 20, 2012 at 7:57 am

“Executives agreed in recent meetings to stop funding groups opposed to same-sex unions, including Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage, according to Chicago Alderman Proco Joe Moreno.”

I got to the piece no problem. Here’s a clip from it.

  77. Frank | September 20, 2012 at 8:32 am

hey art, warren and any others, how did obumer manage to go off message while on littlemen’s show, and get away with blaming “an unstable American who made a bad movie” for the recent murders of 4 Americans in Libya…while his own staff was walking back from that very claim earlier…? methinks it’s because obumer thinks the littlemen show viewers are stupid. What say you?

  78. Shrillary | September 20, 2012 at 8:33 am

#69 most ill-informed – How many times a day do you have to be shown to be wrong? You must be reaching some major quota soon.

“Brooks isn’t even a conservative. That’s how he can work for the New York Times.”
    Comment by Suzie — September 19, 2012 @ 10:55 pm

FACT: ‘Brooks’ public writing about the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is similar to those by neoconservatives, according to a Salon article by Glenn Greenwald, that labels Brooks as a neoconservative”

Brooks was offered a job by William F.Buckley jr with the conservative republican “National Review” magazine which certainly is not known as a bastion of liberalism…

Brooks has long been a supporter of John McCain; however, he did not show a liking for McCain’s 2008 running mate, Sarah Palin, calling her a “cancer” on the Republican Party.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Brooks_%28journalist%29#Political_views

Brooks was at one time a “liberal” but eventually his viewpoint was moderated to a thinking conservative – a mindset completely lost now by the infusion of teabaggery.

  79. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 8:48 am

The RT Blog is moderated by the editorial board and each has a different tolerance for posts. Despite what Suzie whines, IMO they go way overboard in letting the right wingers post their lies and almost never question them.

I had a perfectly logical, calm and well sourced post refused because I called a lie, “a lie” last week. They do that often. They will let a right winger lie, but refuse to let you call them on it directly. You have to work so much harder to get posts through that it is often not worth it. They have lost a lot of participation and my feeling is their lopsided moderation is the problem.

If they were even handed in this moderation that would be fair. They simply are not.

Most of the right wingers there, just like here, post inane, party line parrot points and quite a few, just like here, only come on to denigrate or insult and never offer any substantive discussion.

Personally, since I see this pattern repeat on the RT, the BRC and this blog,(as well as on other sites) I concluded long ago that the right wingers have no interest in discussion, the truth, or finding any kind of common ground. Their “scorched earth” brand of politics goes all the way to the bottom. How appropriate.

  80. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 8:49 am

God help me, I am not one to defend Marked Man, but Dan, the link will only allow you access a couple times and then it asks you to subscribe and it will not bring it back up unless you do.

  81. gdad | September 20, 2012 at 8:50 am

#67 No, you see, troll, you deserve to have yours deleted either because of the offensive content or because that’s the only for Dan to get your attention. In this case, a nutball on the RT blog is essentially falsely accusing Kristen of threatening Romney and she’s not being allowed to reply.

As I’ve said before, the RT blog is basically overrun with right wingers now. Wingnuts have nothing to fear from the mods over there.

  82. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 8:51 am

The point is moot however because I offered an unobstructed link and the verbiage proving the truth in #52.

  83. Dan Casey | September 20, 2012 at 9:04 am

“I am not one to defend Marked Man, but Dan, the link will only allow you access a couple times and then it asks you to subscribe and it will not bring it back up unless you do.”

Then he should man up and subscribe, if he wants to read the story so bad. I had no trouble.

But if he did then he couldn’t make stuff up about it.

  84. gdad | September 20, 2012 at 9:14 am

#82 “The point is moot however because I offered an unobstructed link and the verbiage proving the truth in #52.”

That won’t do, Sandi, because if MMM went to that link and read it, then he’d have to stop simpering about Dan’s link.

  85. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 9:22 am

Dan, the man has a chip on his shoulder. He is intelligent and probably has a good sense of humor but, for whatever reason, he cannot let things go.

  86. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 9:27 am

Frank, your knowledge of diplomacy is as bad as your childish disrespect for the President. Do you think acting like Suzie helps your case?

President Obama was not “off message” and he is right to decry that hideous insulting video to the billion plus Muslims who were deeply offended. People here truly have no concept of devout worship (no matter their self flagellating claims!) but Islam does not take the tenets of their religion lightly and a volatile situation in places where government controls every word you see and activity that happens needs to know that our government and our people do not sanction that insult.

    Get outside the bubble Frank!

  87. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 9:53 am

I just read part the headline it kicked me over to, Dan. It’s all that would display.
” Moreno dropped the fight against Chick-Fil-A instead and says he is satisfied with the level of respect that CFA gives to LBGT”

Thanks, Sandi, however the link you provided is to someone’s blog. Not very official stuff there…

So does anyone have a statement from CFA about the letter or a copy of it?

No? You mean you all keep referring to what an alderman ‘says’ happened??

Let me rephrase what Dan’s ‘link’ really meant:

“An alderman gave up his fight against CFA and dropped his opposition. He ‘says’ that he received a signed letter, but we haven’t seen it and CFA is not saying that they sent a letter at all. Merely that they are going to review how some things are handled internally.
So what we really have here is a guy giving up his fight against CFA and is the only one that has seen a letter from CFA stating they will stop donating millions to different organizations. However, CFA isn’t saying they sent a letter and the alderman isn’t showing it to anyone.”

    There, fixed it for ya.

  88. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 9:53 am

Frank, if you can’t call people by their proper names, your comments aren’t worthy of a response.

  89. gdad | September 20, 2012 at 10:53 am

MMM sounds at least partly right this time. Chick Fil A won’t confirm one way or the other.

“A Chick-fil-A spokesman acknowledged Wednesday’s news developments but said there would be no further comment beyond re-releasing a statement made in July. That statement says in part: “Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”

So what does this all mean? Is Chick-fil-A retreating? Did Moreno really wrestle a concession out of the fast-food chain? And perhaps the most important question of all: Can those who followed the boycott get in line for some of those hot, salty fries?

The Chicago Tribune story, which includes quotes from Moreno, sounds skeptical. The story raises the question about whether Chick-fil-A is actually beating a retreat or simply reaffirming its position that it treats everyone with dignity.”

  90. Frank | September 20, 2012 at 11:03 am

aawww, hey debbie, does your pronouncement also apply to the libs on this blog?

  91. Frank | September 20, 2012 at 11:11 am

    hey sandi,

decrying that hideous video is one thing, and no doubt both he and hillary were proper in doing so. However, his comments on the littlemen show perpetuated that which his administration NEW not be true. I call that lying. and, since he did so on the littlemen show, and since 47% of us think he’s such a real smart guy…, he new he could hood-wink the littlemen show’s viewers with his lies….or, according to you, his lies on the littlemen show were designed to be sensitive to the middle eastern devotees of Islam? Is that the gist of what you said?

    What say you?

  92. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 11:44 am

Frank, I say you are a right wing blowhard with nothing but partisan BS between your ears. You want to belittle what anyone says and then expect respect for your drivel and I am sick of it.

Obama did not “lie”, he just did not disclose everything he knew on a talk show. No, I do not call that “lying”. No, he didn’t know it to be not true. The attack did happen during a protest that gave them cover. As I already said in another post, the matter is being investigated and there are legitimate questions to be answered. We may never know the full truth, but that does not mean that it is all Obama’s fault, or that he is a “liar”.

  93. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 11:46 am

FWIW worth, Frank, I do think everyone should call others by their proper names.

  94. gdad | September 20, 2012 at 12:00 pm

#55 Kristen, no idea why your posts were rejected over at the RT, but here’s something Christina Nuckols posted about the whole thing:

“Michael misconstrued the comment and made a big deal about it. Others chimed in. We do not reject comments just because they are ridiculous. Anyone who feels the need to call the Secret Service can find the number anyway. Anyone who actually thinks it’s a good idea to annoy the Secret Service in this case can do so, but I don’t think prank calls are appreciated, and I wouldn’t want to be the person making a nuisance of myself to this particular agency.”

  95. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 12:00 pm

    Just for you Mark. http://eater.com/archives/2012/09/19/has-chickfila-agreed-to-stop-its-antigay-donations.php

Might it finally be safe for gay rights advocates to eat chicken sandwiches again? An advocacy group in Chicago says that Chick-fil-A has agreed to quit giving money to anti-gay organizations after this summer’s complete media shitstorm over anti-gay marriage statements from the company’s COO Dan Cathy. And based on these apparent concessions, Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno has likewise agreed to give up his fight against allowing the chicken chain to open a location in his ward, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Chick-fil-A is neither confirming or denying. >>>

Regarding Dan’s link I clicked on it this morning, and the CF message came up, then the subscription box popped up. When I X’d out of it, instead of taking me back to the CF story, todays copy of the front page of the paper appeared.

  96. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Sorry, didn’t see Gdad’s or Mark’s follow up comments about CFA before I posted my last comment.

  97. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 12:03 pm

The Civil Rights Agenda website quotes the letter and tells you who signed it. Until Chick-fil-a denies it, there is no reason to doubt them.

    http://jointcra.org/

In a letter addressed to Alderman Moreno and signed by Chick-fil-A’s Senior Director of Real Estate, it states, “The WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.” Winshape, a non-profit funded by Chick-fil-a, has donated millions of dollars to anti-LGBT groups, including some classified as hate groups. In meetings the company executives clarified that they will no longer give to anti-gay organizations.

  98. Kristen | September 20, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Gdad, Michael didn’t “misconstrue” anything. Whatever, I’ve got new things today to be irritated about, had to kick that one out of the queue. :)

  99. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Frank, the difference between the conservatives and the libs on here, is that most of the conservatives seem to relish appearing to be jackasses.

  100. gdad | September 20, 2012 at 1:45 pm

#98 “Gdad, Michael didn’t “misconstrue” anything.”

    I know.

  101. Shrillary | September 20, 2012 at 2:45 pm

@87 Marked Man – here is additional information which may or may not satisfy you…

Chick-Fil-A says it will stop donations to anti-gay groups…
A Chick-Fil-A executive has confirmed that the company will stop donating to groups like Focus on the Family and other groups with anti-gay agendas, according to The Civil Rights Agenda, a Chicago-based gay-rights organization.

Executives later clarified the statement to say it would no longer donate to anti-gay groups…
    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/chick-fil-a-stop-donations-anti-gay-groups-article-1.1162936

The revised policy document in question is called “Chick-fil-A: Who We Are”:

Chick-fil-A is a family-owned and family-led company serving the communities in which it operates. From the day Truett Cathy started the company, he began applying biblically-based principles to managing his business. For example, we believe that closing on Sundays, operating debt-free and devoting a percentage of our profits back to our communities are what make us a stronger company and Chick-fil-A family.

The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

Our mission is simple: to serve great food, provide genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.

  102. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 3:11 pm

Shrillary, your link is no different than Dan’s (semi) link or Sandi’s link to a gay blog.

There is no proof from any named person at Chick Fil A that they agreed to stop donating to anyone or anything.

  103. Dan Casey | September 20, 2012 at 3:21 pm

“Shrillary, your link is no different than Dan’s (semi) link or Sandi’s link to a gay blog.

There is no proof from any named person at Chick Fil A that they agreed to stop donating to anyone or anything.”

Hey, we’re making progress! At least now MMM is acknowledging the Trib story SAID that. Yesterday he seemed to be denying that.

  104. Shrillary | September 20, 2012 at 3:41 pm

Marked Man – Wow – that denial runs deep…the Chick fil A’s executive is named Johnson – he provided the info to the Daily Caller and the NY Daily News…[who knew the venerable Daily News was a "gay blog" - that would be news to most New Yorkers]…

Soooo, Marked Man – how about a link to FOX News? yes, yes yes, I know they lie A LOT, but most people who watch them believe everything they say, so how about it? Here’s their link

“A Georgia-based restaurant chain that drew national attention when its owner reaffirmed his opposition to same-sex marriage says it’s leaving the debate to politicians in the future.

Chick-fil-A issued a statement to that effect Wednesday when asked to comment on a claim earlier in the day that the company had stopped funding organizations that oppose same-sex marriage”.
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/09/19/leave-gay-marriage-debate-to-government-chick-fil-says-in-statement/#ixzz272Zi2KBp

  105. Dan Casey | September 20, 2012 at 3:49 pm

    Shrill,

MMM is going to deny this one til the cows come home. He’d deny it even if Dan Cathey himself knocked on MMM’s door and told him it was true.

(And by the way, no matter what you’ve heard on Channel 10, I’m not Chick Fil A’s chief operating officer.)

    Cluck, cluck!

  106. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 3:57 pm

Soooo shrillary, where is your statement that someone named Johnson said CFA is not donating any more money to anti-gay groups?

  107. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 3:58 pm

And shrillary, your Fox link doesn’t state that CFA is not donating money any longer.

Wonder why that alderman hasn’t shown anyone the official letter stating that??

  108. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 4:02 pm

He does this with every discussion. Is it an obsession? Is Chick-fil-a denying the letter or its contents? It is on several news outlets. Why would Cathy not put on the cape and crusade again for dollars for only Christian marriage if it is a lie?

  109. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Sandi, the point is that Dan provided a link about how CFA supposedly folded and agreed to stop donating money…. based only on the work of an alderman. Nothing has been verified or proven, however.

Of course I now realize this is an ‘open thread’ and Dan wasn’t writing an article or linking to anything credible or verified.

So I apologize for harping. Maybe Dan can title it ‘Make anything up based on one dude’s word thread’ instead??

  110. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 4:35 pm

    *word

  111. gdad | September 20, 2012 at 4:36 pm

#108 I’m betting that MMM knows even better than the owners why they closed down the Little Chef, Tudors and The Library.

  112. Marked Man | September 20, 2012 at 4:36 pm

“MMM is going to deny this one til the cows come home”

Fine, Dan. Show me where CFA officially states they will stop donating. I will never eat there again if you do.

  113. Shrillary | September 20, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Evidently nothing will make MM believe, and I am not inclined any longer to waste my time nor feed the denial – wow, just wow.

  114. Frank | September 20, 2012 at 5:47 pm

oh, debie, debbie, debbie…where to start? how about with this? as is routine for lib blogs, conservatives are held to a different standard. Eh?

  115. Frank | September 20, 2012 at 5:53 pm

    well sandi,

there are some who expect to believe what the president says in response to a direct question…regarless of whether he’s on the littlemen’s show, or at a news conference…will be the truth. The point is, he is speaking before a national audience… like bubba was when he shook his long finger at the American people, looked us all in the eye, and said…”I did NOT have sex with that women”!!! National audiences, both. of course, libs will say that “Bush lied”!! well, since THAT’s what YOU think…, your guy obama is no better than Bush. How’s you like that?

  116. Dan Casey | September 20, 2012 at 5:56 pm

“Fine, Dan. Show me where CFA officially states they will stop donating. I will never eat there again if you do.”

    Hey MMM,

Before I expend any effort in this regard, tell me how often you eat there. If your answer is “never” I’m not gonna bother.

  117. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 6:40 pm

What happened to the idea that Cathy is free to do whatever he chooses with his money? If he chooses to donate to anti-gay groups, than all is well, and all who supported CFA before will support them? If he chooses not to, how dare he cave in, we won’t support him naymore? Is that how it works Mark?

  118. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 6:42 pm

#114 Believe what you want to Frank.

  119. Sandi Saunders | September 20, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Frank, are you 13? Do you have difficulty typing or is that just how you communicate? This is not twitter, you can use whole sentences and real grammar here. Reading your posts are not as bad as pammala and that steve n dude, but they are close.

EVERYONE “lies”. Sometimes it is to save themselves, sometimes to save others. No one has more on their shoulders than a President with people in harm’s way. I am not so simple minded as to believe that he should answer a “direct question” with any more information than is needed at any given moment. The issue is and should be investigated and even if he lied boldly as Nixon, Reagan, Clinton and Bush have all done, it is still something that I will give him the benefit of good motives on.

I understand you are in no such mood with anything related to Obama. I get that. I was certainly no fan of anything Bush said after the Iraq War and all those deaths and thousands upon thousands of wounded and maimed soldiers and citizens.

I suppose we can agree to disagree and let it go. When you find Obama in a lie on par with Bush, or even Clinton. You let me know.

  120. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Naymore is supposed to be anymore.

  121. Dave Hicks | September 20, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Maybe until the cows parachute into Lane S adium?

  122. Dave Hicks | September 20, 2012 at 8:28 pm

    Re: Comment by Debbie — September 20, 2012 @ 6:40 pm

    That works for me.

I’m free to associate with and take my business to places I like and avoid those I dislike — for whatever reason I like of dislike them. As are you, MMM, Cathy, Casey, etc.

You, MMM, Cathy, Casey, I, etc are free to do whatever we chooses with our money, as long as it is legal in-and-of-itself. If that means supporting a chicken place or a cookie baker or avoiding them, for whatever reason, that’s OK. It’s that thing call freedom.

  123. Debbie | September 20, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Dave Hicks @8:28 I agree. People are free to spend their own money, legally however they choose I do have a problem with those who loudly proclaimed their support for someone because he was giving money to anti-gay groups, then declaring they won’t support him anymore if he chooses to quit donating to those groups.

Are the people who supported the good Christian man going to now decide that he’s no longer a good Christian?

Whoa Debbie, I dont care how or where people spend their money to eat. I just noticed that the link journalist Dan provided had no proof that CFA announced they would stop donating money. His link only said an alderman claimed to have received a letter.

No letter was shown as proof to anyone and CFA never said they sent a letter stating they would stop donating. So it really is just some simple alderman’s word.

I agreed with gdad that the Chicage Tribune’s story that Dan linked to sounds skeptical. CFA would not confirm they stopped donations.

Shrillary chimed in, botched someone’s name, then realized upon re-reading that Johnston never said anything about stopping donations… merely that CFA would review politically sensitive issues… which is what I stated in the first place so she tucked tail and left the discussion.

    Hope this helps.

I eat there on average about once every week, Dan. So you have a copy of the letter? Or a statement from CFA confirming they will stop donating?? OR a statement from CFA confirming they even sent a letter??!?

Do you have any more fables from an alderman to share?

Speaking of cookie man, notice how the dude has just faded back into the woodwork? Hope his business sis doing OK.

And the same “good Christian” people who supported the bankrupt baker, and the chicken killer, turned on the pizza power-lifter with a Biblical vengeance! The ratings site “Yelp” had to remove all sorts of angry, hateful posts. Seems the “good Christians” are no more good than the “heathens” on the left after all.

    Does help, Mark.

At least when Dan Radmacher was monitoring, the free exchange of ideas wasn’t subject to what amounted to his mood swings.

Yeah it was. One time Rad said he pro-choice mother was a devout Catholic, and I said she wasn’t by definition. He said I was on thin ice and threatened to ban me.

Poor Christian Trejbal. I believe it was his unfortunate decision to publish the names of concealed weapons permit holders that cost him his print column. Nobody hates like that guy.

  131. Dan Casey | September 21, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Christian Trejbal still has a print column, of course. Here’s his column archive:

Trejbal has an online column, but I haven’t seen it printed in the paper for a long time.

Have no idea how he is actually doing financially. However, walked by there the other day — mid-afternoon. Not much business visible.

He’s the New River columnist. His column runs in the New River Edition.

About this blog

Metro Columnist Dan Casey knows a little bit about a lot of things but not a heck of a lot about most things. That doesn't keep him from writing about them, however. So keep him honest!

He welcomes your rants, raves and considered opinions, so long as the language is civil (i.e. no four-letter words). He'll read all your posts and may or may not respond.
