More adventures with my Obama-fearing correspondent, ‘Randy’

Last week I published a long and bizarre screed from a guy named “Randy.”
He had sent me an email detailing the president’s so-called terrorist ties, questioning whether Obama was born in this country, lambasting Michelle Obama for taking vacation and moving her mother into the White House, and calling Obama “a criminal” who was intent on forcing socialism upon an unwilling electorate.
Over the weekend I got a bunch more emails from Randy.
One was a forwarded “letter,” purportedly from an Israeli psychologist, a leading expert in narcissism. It analyzes Obama as the ultimate narcissist.
Three seconds searching online disclosed that the “doctor,” who exists, actually holds a Phd in philosophy from an unaccredited online university, and that he didn’t write the ‘analysis.’ It was written by an anti-Muslim extremist, with a different name, who lives in Canada and has no background in psychology.
Randy’s response?
“I knew when I sent the email that it was not written by whom it was ascribed to be written by but yes that concerned me. What mattered to me the most is that the description fits Obama. Obama is a total narcissist. Every article written by a medical professional says the same thing, that Obama is a pure unadulterated narcissist.”
Next, Randy sent me ANOTHER chain email that alleged that:
- Obama’s brother-in-law was in danger of losing his basketball coaching job at Oregon State;
- In response, the White House dispatched a Department of Education undersecretary to the school with a $16 million stimulus check; and
- In this way, Obama “saved” the coach’s job.
“Explain this one to me while you are at coming up with an explanation to my other email,” Randy wrote.
Easy. It takes a few stray fact and builds an urban legend around them that’s totally untrue.
Next Randy sent me this You Tube video of a New York City preacher who essentially alleges that Obama is a Saudi (and Muslim) plant, a la the Manchurian Candidate, whose job it is to lead us into becoming a Muslim nation or something like that.
The video is real. The preacher actually says that stuff, more or less — without one iota of substantiating information. It’s all, “we understand” this and “we understand” that. It’s pure garbage, but Randy believes the guy is actually speaking the truth.
And the preacher? He’s a kook. Did I mention that his resume includes prison time for burglary and robbery?
This stuff barely scratches the surface of the amount of whacked-out craziness that’s out there, especially regarding the president. And hard-line haters such as Randy just don’t care if it’s not true or not.
They won’t even bother to spend 3 seconds ascertaining whether it MIGHT be false.And they simply don’t want to hear any evidence to the contrary. Because they want to believe it so badly.
There’s probably a million or more Randys out there, spreading incredible garbage and unbelievable lies, to tens of millions of others every day. Randy himself is evidence that some of it’s sticking.
And we haven’t even gotten into the far more clever distortions and half-truths Republicans are slinging, or the hundreds of millions in unaccounted-for money they’ve amassed to spread those falsehoods.
These seems unprecedented in presidential politics. And it’s actually kind of depressing.

The lies and fabrications coming from the right are indeed without precedent. If these people win it’s time to duck and cover (and, no, I’m not suggesting they’ll get us into a nuclear war, although who knows, Shrubbie got us into a real mess).
Dear Lord in heaven; what is it about Dan’s blog that attracts all the right-tards?
It’s like RedState left the barn door open and all the crazies escaped the reservation. There’s also a surplus of malcontents that keep logging in day after day that insult Dan’s journalism and tell us all how bad the blog is. If it was really as bad as these asshats it is I don’t see why they keep coming back. Frank and steve nelson in particular are two of the worst saddle sores in cyberspace.
Seriously, you guys should try to find a better outlet for your anger. All Randy’s been doing is just reinforcing the stereotypes about crazy tin foil hat wearing teabaggers into a self-fulfilling prophecy for yourselves. Honestly; we normal folks had no idea that Sharon N and her pointless stream of un-consciousness ranting was infecting the entire right wing blogosphere but it’s becoming increasing clear that something’s infecting the water you kids make your Kool-aid with. The most troubling aspect of Randy’s diatribe is that he actually appears to believe the tripe he posts; if he’s really that gullible than how the hell does this fool make it through the week and not make a sizable down payment on a fool proof investment like the Brooklyn Bridge?
If you guys are so freakin’ smart, than please explain to me why you only see Fairtax or teabagger bumper stickers on clapped out 15 year old Hyundai’s that are magically held together with bailing wire and duct tape?
Every single thing Randy says can be summed up…”He’s black. And a democrat.” The RNC is counting on loons like this to get out there and push their swill for them.
I’d say there’s zero chance that any of the real power structure in the GOP believe any of this crap. But that’s not going to keep them from throwing it out there.
Where is the call for a “voting test” when a right wing loon happily spreads lies and wants Dan to help? I fear for this nation, I truly do. Voters that hungry for a “reason” to hate are scary.

There’s been a lot of political lunacy out there this year. It’s gotten so bad that seemingly non-political posts to Facebook by some friends of mine have devolved into several conservatives posting what I can only assume is something written in some form of the English language, but that is so completely incoherent that it’s virtually impossible to understand just what the hell was written, aside from the smattering of swear words that surround Obama.
Actually, Randy is the one who appears to be “hittin’ the ol’ sauce”, he and folks like him who fall for every lie on those “series of tubes”. Right wingers are the bane of the internet.

Dan, I’ve been trying. I’ve not seen anything remotely approaching the hateful level of some really extreme conservatives I’ve had the misfortune of seeing, but I readily admit that perhaps I don’t know any extremist left-wingers who would approach the same level of extremism from some folks on the right that I’ve seen.
I think the thing that speaks volumes, is that when I’ve had conservative friends of mine comment on some of the things I’ve posted, they’ve posted stuff that is so easy to refute with the factual truth that it’s kind of sad…and then I never hear from them again.
Probably the dumbest things I’ve seen a couple liberals post are links to political satire websites, thinking they were legitimate. But, given some of the things actually spoken by Romney, Ryan, Akin, Backman, Palin, etc over the years…it’s getting awfully damned hard to separate satire from reality with the GOP.

As I posted on another thread, I believe these “big lies” are a RW strategy – spread lies that are so outrageous that the gullible (and the haters) think that no one could fabricate something that outrageous, therefore they must be true. Those slanderous and false email screeds are amazing. Apparently there are a large number of people who will circulate anything without the least concern for its truth or falsity.
Some of these emails are stunningly stupid. Many of those who circulate this stuff do it constantly. And they aren’t even original;I received that same email calling Obama a “narcissist” by the fake “psychologist” during the 2008 campaign.
Randy could benefit from some mental health treatment. Hopefully he’ll be able to get it under the Affordable Care Act.

A country that entertains lecturing by Michelle Malkin is a sad country indeed.
However, I was amused by her claim that “experienced” is supposedly considered bigotry by Democrats.
That makes no sense. Obama has almost 4 years experience in the White House, and with foreign policy, and commanding troops. Romeny’s foreign policy experience is limited to 2 years living in a former embassy in Paris while on a mission trip there, plus his recent wanderings across Europe where he stuck his foot in his mouth wherever he landed.
Obama is clearly more experienced at being President.
Mayne Suze could teach Obama lessons in narcissism. The guy comes across as just a bit too humble for me.

During my undergraduate studies at VCU I had the honor of bartending for Mr. Woodrum and about 20 or so other Virginia Delegates when they came into my bar after work one evening. He is truly one of the giants in Va politics and is greatly missed.

hey dano, from what i surmise, those emails appear just like others that i’ve seen over the years, which cover a variety of perspectives in the political morass we have today. so what? those emails could have come from someone actually named randy…or, they could have come from a person with some other name. in fact, they could have come from sandi, for all i know…technology and such being what it is today. that still doesn’t prove that you don’t have a blow-up doll named Randy, and that “he” doesn’t send “you” those emails.
Not that my ego doesn’t LOVE the namedrop, Frank, but why are you mentioning me?
While we’re at it, why do you always seem to be so hostile? I know that by coming here you’re wading into “enemy territory” as you’d see it, but why are you always seemingly on the attack? Both sides cry about the lack of civility here and then refuse to offer it. Then they claim it’s only a response in kind. Some days, this place is like being trapped in a washing machine full of poo.
It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s within our abilities to logically discuss and debate topics on this forum without spiraling into hostility. We can still make our tongue-in-cheek jabs and smarmy retorts but at the end of the day (because after all, they are kind of fun), it’s still just the internet.

Those mindless fodder emails are what keeps Snopes in business. Google “Israeli psychologist, a leading expert in narcissism” (or whatever right wing lunatic notion you see here) and you will find thousands of sites propagating the same lies, distortions and faux “news”. When that many millions of people are that easily fooled and willingly spread it, there is no hope for a civil or intelligent dialogue. I have given up trying. Much like matt, Suzie, Frank, Van and others, it is simply a war of insults. Why is “alcoholic” an okay insult and Steve C’s over the top? You all need to check the archives, for you are stepping all over Suzie’s feet with this problem you have with insults. She is the queen.

I have followed the whole “Randy” emails threads largely without comment to this point. Instead, I have just been observing and watching while the raving racist rabble has proceeded to first indict themselves asnd then finally convict and hang themselves for what has been clesrly been the case all along. The rabid drooling from Randy, pammalala, the birthers like SharonN, steve nelson, pistol pete, Henry, frank (the rubber man) and of course the suz, have only confirmed for the whole world to see their deep seated hate for Barack Obama based upon a visceral racism that is quite ugly and unjustified. And the failure by the other conservatives here such as M Howdyshell, terps, Chuck, VRWC,John Wilburn (sometimes) and others to condemn these paranoiac ramblings and even buy into the Obama hates America and is trying to destroy it rantings makes them at least complicit in the problem. You and I both know that all sides are guilty of it. After my drunken, insulting rant on Suzie a few weeks back (for which I subsequently apologized), I decided that I’d try maintaining a little more decorum here. I have to admit: it’s been more difficult than I thought it would be. I’ve chosen to hold my tongue a bit more as a result (which is probably not a bad thing). The point is that it has to start somewhere. We have to change the game.
This is not an unsupervised elementary school. If we have the ability to comment on an internet forum, we have the ability to act like civilized, classy adults while doing so. We’re all relatively intelligent people here. We cannot successfully share any ideas by insulting our peers and trying to dismiss the person and not the issue at hand.
There will always be trolls. There will always be people who disagree with us in the most snide, rude way they can. There will always be people who just don’t like us, for any or no reason at all. Those are the ones you should refuse to engage. Until we have an “ignore user” feature, they have just as much right to post whatever Dan will allow as we do and we have to view it. The only other option is to choose to not come here. Or you could grow thicker skin and roll with it…
…so anyway, the point of this long diatribe is really to tell you that you’re a big meany stupidhead, you smell funny and your fiscal, social and spiritual views are antiquated and need an update almost as bad as your haircut. #62 – I’ll answer for it, if I may. Since I haven’t referenced her comment in its entirety, I’ll tell you my impression of it from what you quoted from Sandi here:
Can it really be argued whether she made a bad decision or not? I mean, she did lose her life, after all. Had she chosen to not get in the car, she might have lived a long and healthy life. Getting in the car was certainly not a good decision. Agree?
Further, she was getting involved with a Kennedy. The family name itself was very powerful and getting involved, especially personally, within that is in itself a risky proposition. She knew that and chose poorly. Remember, she told no one she was leaving and left her purse and hotel key at the party – another bad decision. Can that be argued?
Did Sandi also not have a point? Why are we further discussing an unfortunate girl who died as a result of poor decisions by everyone involved? Dust to dust, my friend.

If you want to see Sandi’s exact quote, it appears in my posts….exactly as Sandi wrote it. It appears as though she was suggesting to others on the thread (not me, because i hadn’t addressed Mary Jo K. at all), that they should “leave the poor girl alone, let her rest in peace…” …had Sandi not then made reference to Mary Jo K’s “…for her own bad choices”, there would be no issue.
My interest lies in what Sandi thought were the “bad choices” Mary Jo K. made prior to the tragic episode. It sounded to me like Sandi might be blaming the victim for her own tragedy…which seems to be a deservedly unsavory (although often effective) tactic used by some defense attorneys when defending alleged rapists. In the instance of Mary Jo K., if people were to focus more on what Mary J’s “bad choices” might have been, maybe there would be less attention placed on a famously rich and powerful politician that many libs idolize. To me, it’s what defenders of rapists do, and the words used by Sandi sound just like those defenders.
I agree with your opinion of the kennedys. poor Mary Jo K. was young, likely star-struck, presumably defenseless, and probably innocent of wrong-doing…except for whatever Sandi thinks MJK’s “bad choices” were.
And, since Sandi brought that issue up on her own, I figured I’d try to engage in that issue.

I think you know that I have followed all of the apparant rules Sandi has edicted that us conservatives follow…no name calling, no disrespectful comments, no insults, etc. Heck, throughout this whole “MJK” matter, I haven’t even lied once! Now, of course those weren’t Sandi’s exact words, but she has called me out, as have others, including you, for what you all view as over-the-top blogging behavior. All I’d ask is that you take a fresh look at some of the above-referenced behaviors which appear on Dan’s blog, and then think about from which side of the fence they emit. Both sides are well represented, and very often the leaders can’t see the forest for the trees.
