Just as expected, those cheating Democrats are extending the deadline to get an absentee ballot in Pennsylvania. They’ll do anything to win… What’s that? The governor who extended the deadline is a Repub and absentee ballots turned back in are favoring Repubs?
Just as expected, those cheating Repubs…
Romney to come to the Roanoke area again, speaking at Integrity Windows, a company that almost certainly benefitted immensely from the stimulus package, which included a $1,500 tax credit for energy-efficient replacement windows.
So a governor extending absentee ballots to help ensure that people can get out and cast their vote is a cheater.
Awwwww, someone has had a lot of issues in their life it seems.
@2- Careful blowing that trumpet everywhere. You may pull a muscle.
#2 Of course they benefitted enormously from those tax breaks AND they’re happy to advertise about how they meet federal energy-efficiency standards and how they are so “green.” I’d say they’re getting some help building that.
Man, thoe Fox News guys are SOOOOO nonpartisan. Chris Christy has been praising Obama for the federal response to Sandy so far. He even mentioned it on Fox. That was perhaps too much for the Fox anchor.
“Fox News co-host Steve Doocy wondered when Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was going to get some of the same benefits from the hurricane with a photo op in disaster-stricken New Jersey towns.
“Over the last couple of months, you have appeared throughout the country, Governor, on behalf of Mitt Romney,” Doocy remarked to Christie. “[W]e hear that perhaps Mr. Romney may do some storm-related events. Is there any possibility that Gov. Romney may go to New Jersey to tour some of the damage with you?”
“I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested,” Christie replied, immediately shutting down the idea. “I’ve got a job to do here in New Jersey that’s much bigger than presidential politics and I could [sic] care less about any of that stuff.”

@6 – Hell yea, Chris Christie is leading and being the leader he is. Gotta love him. Wish he ran for President. National disasters are no time for leaders to be partisan or even play any politics. Kudos to Christie for answering correctly and to the President for responding to such a horrific event.
If Obama wins re-election, you just watch the RWers turn on Chris Christie with a vengeance. They will figuratively tar and feather him for going on national TV and praising the president’s response, and putting Obama over the top for the election.
The killer is, if Christie harbors presidential ambitions, it’s IN HIS INTEREST to see Obama re-elected Tuesday. Then the White House will be an open seat in 4 years, and many independents will fondly recall the governor who refused to play politics in a time of natural disaster.
That’s why Steve Doocy on Fox News seems so bent out of shape. Christie has nothing to lose by praising Obama, ESPECIALLY if Obama wins, after which the GOP may very well have engage in a pogrom to rid themselves of the Tea Party nuts.
I agree UTR…the response from Christie, along with most state/local leaders (there’s a couple local-level buffoons who likely made matters worse), and indeed the Feds as well, for this storm have been pretty good.
The one decision at the federal level that will be debated for quite some time to come was the decision by the National Hurricane Center to not issue any tropical storm or hurricane warnings that far north. Their rationale was that Sandy would not be a true tropical system by that point, and therefore would not warrant traditional tropical-related warnings.
That may be technically the case, but it wa still a hurricane, and only very slightly before landfall, did it appear to really lose true tropical characteristics. I wonder how many people chose not to evacuate simply because hurricane warnings were not issued. They botched that badly…and as much as I’ve disliked Accuweather for some of their handling of weather events, their CEO rightly called out the NHC on mishandling the warnings. Thankfully folks in the northeast generally understood the severity of the storm and took heed.
Now for the recovery…those folks are going to have a long haul on the cleanup…the flooding has apparently far exceeded previous records in several locations, and was beyond what a lot of the infrastructure was designed to withstand. And the fire in Queens destroying 80-100 homes because fore trucks couldn;t get to it due to the flood, is absolutely terrible. The death toll in the US currentlty stands at 21, and I’m sure it will climb further as the waters receed and the full scope of damage can be surveyed.
I’m not a huge fan of Christie, but I doubt he gives one rats butt what a tool like Doocy thinks of him. I don’t think he has much of a filter between his mouth and his brain, and I can’t see him making the pilgrimage to kiss the rings at Liberty. Ergo, I don’t think he has much chance for a national ticket.
I saw him on CNN today and he was complimentary of Obama there too.
#3 MMM, try reading a little more carefully and pausing for a minute to attempt a tiny bit of comprehension.
Christie doesn’t want to see Romney in office and potentially put the kibosh on his bid for the presidency in 2016. I think before that happens, though, he will need to take off about 100 pounds. No one wants their president to be one breath away from a heart attack.
Here’s the Romney position on public education.
http://thinkprogress.org/education/2012/10/29/1103081/ann-romney-throw-out-education/
The right wing would turn on their mother if she expressed a kind word about Obama. They should be careful, Christie is one of the few people who could lead them out of the morass they willfully jumped into. I hope he doesn’t, just for spite.
Yeah Kristen,
That’s almost as scary as electing one who smokes cigarettes.
Sorry Kristen,
Above post it to Lynda.
gdad, before the hurricane hit did you lose sleep over who was leading in absentee voting in PA? Did you really?
Bob H… Smoking 6 cigarettes a day (which Obama no longer does, by the way) Is not nearly as likely to cause sudden death as being dangerously obese.
#17 Good grief, MMM, I’m not concerned in the least about absentee ballot deadlines being extended. I was mocking certain right wingers for their incessant claims that Obama is going (take your choice) halt the election, cut off early voting for the military, grab everybody’s guns, send out legions of fake voters, and on and on. If this has been a Dem governor extending the deadline, no question in hell some of the Obama haters would have been crying foul.
Wow, gdad, you sure do make up a lo… I mean, worry about a lot of stuff that is hypothetical.
Here is a great, sober round-up of the facts about the right-wing freakout (engaged by many on this blog) about the Benghazi “live feed” from the always sensible Jay Bookman.
Romney finds himself irrelevant to the past days’ events – most people who have suffered from this storm are not thinking about the politics…however, he continues to insert himself into the news declaring he will collect “stuff” for the storm victims put them into his campaign bus, and tool around NJ. The problem is the Red Cross, a leading disaster relief agency has a policy not to take clothing, canned food, etc. They want dollars! Romney, being as shallow as one can get, prefers to have cameras present at his “Victory Rally” [slightly premature, no?} while he stands in front of can goods…
Red Cross: “Unfortunately, due to logistical constraints the Red Cross does not accept or solicit individual donations or collections of items. Items such as collected food, used clothing and shoes must be sorted, cleaned, repackaged and transported which impedes the valuable resources of money, time, and personnel.”

#20 Tell us, MMM, which part of this is made up:
“…certain right wingers for their incessant claims that Obama is going (take your choice) halt the election, cut off early voting for the military, grab everybody’s guns, send out legions of fake voters, and on and on.”
That’s what I thought.
#21 The most telling part of that piece? Romney is NOT talking abut it on the campaign trail — and for good reason.
Coming to the US?

Polish rape victim ‘should have had abortion access’
A Polish teenager who became pregnant after rape should have had unhindered access to an abortion, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled.
The girl, who was then 14, was forced to have a clandestine abortion after harassment from pro-life groups led to her being turned away from hospitals.
The court ordered the Polish state to pay the teenager and her mother 61,000 euros (£49,000) in compensation.

Oh lord. Cue the cries of “He shouldn’t be campaigning with the Sandy cleanup going on!”
Mr. Romney will be here Thursday!
Dan…I have no problem with either of them campaigning from here out.
I’m just surprised Obama is leaving his command post, where he is “monitoring the storm”. What a guy.
Obama is in big trouble, Dan.
The latest numbers are dismal for him. Down 22 points in early voting from 2008! Whoa!
Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in play? The people aren’t too happy. can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
@Dave Hicks, #25 “Coming to the US?”
I sure hope not. I would like to think that our government would put the well being of the women of our country over forced pregnancies and basement abortions. What is even worse is that the funding for Planned Parenthood is being threatened as if the only service that they provide is abortions.
I think that it’s sad that the health of women nationwide will be jeopardized by a few politicians using their superstition to subjugate women.
Just talked with my son, the oyster farmer, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Strong westerly winds kept him off the water today, but the oyster house and equipment seems to have weathered Sandy. As the winds calm down he will be able to actually inspect his oyster farm in Nandua Creek to see what damage was done there. As the Chesapeake Bay includes a huge watershed runoff from the hurricane could impact his farm over the next several weeks. Right now though he is thankful that his equipment and facilities are apparently okay.

Radmucker, wrong again. Energy efficiency credits are part of the tax code not the stolulus package. Part of the overall Bush tax reduction and
credit package set to expire because the Democrat Senate obstructed it’s
renewal.
“Don’t ask me how I know.”
We won’t, but somebody else might. They tend to take security leaks very seriously. Sleep well!
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Home-Energy-Credits-Still-Available-for-2011
•The 2011 credit rate is 10 percent of the cost of qualified energy efficiency improvements. Energy efficiency improvements include adding insulation, energy-efficient exterior windows and doors and certain roofs. The cost of installing these items does not count.
Actually, Leon, the Energy Tax Credit, though limited, was still available in 2011.
Leon, here’s a hint: Don’t try to fact-check me. You’ll get burnt almost every time.
“On February 17, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009. This bill extends and modifies the tax credits for windows, doors, and skylights established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The following guidance is not intended as legal advice, and you should consult a tax professional with specific questions.
“Qualifying products purchased between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30 percent of the product cost. Installation is not included; be sure to obtain an itemized invoice from your retailer or installer. The maximum amount of homeowner credit for all improvements combined (including roofing, insulation, HVAC, and water heaters) is $1,500 during 2009 and 2010.”

This is the first time they have endorsed a Republican for President in 40 years, and he is the only Republican they have endorsed this year. The last time they endorsed a Republican candidate for President was President Richard Nixon’s re-election in 1972.
I wondered why the Des Moines Register took such a step in favor of Romney. I thought about what Nixon & Romney had in common other than being Republicans. It took me a while, but I figured it out.
Both were/are liars!!
A bit off track for this blog. But what the hay. Some here might want to share with young folk that they know.

College Admissions using social media to evaluate applicants
Tuesday, October, 30, 2012; 10:23 PM
by Max Luong, News Staff Writer
More university admissions offices than ever before have added a new tool to their evaluation process: Facebook.
According to studies conducted by Kaplan Test Prep, over a quarter of colleges today monitor prospective students’ Facebook pages during the application process.
In 2008, only one in 10 admissions officers reported monitoring applicants’ social networking pages. Now, 26 percent of administrations use Facebook to look up university hopefuls; 27 percent use Google.
SNIP
“With 20,000 applications rolling through every year and a small body to read them, we don’t have the resources,” said Jennifer Harris, the public relations representative for Tech’s admissions office.
While Tech claims social network monitoring is out of the question today, the administration currently has no set policy.

Had to snicker:
A Pirate Walks Into A Bar…..
A pirate walked into a bar, and the bartender said, “Hey, I haven’t seen you in awhile. What happened? You look terrible.
“What do you mean?” said the pirate, “I feel fine.”
“What about the wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.”
“Well,” said the pirate, “We were in a battle, and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I’m fine now.”
The bartender replied, “Well, OK, but what about that hook? What happened to your hand?”
The pirate explained, “We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off. I got fitted with a hook but I’m fine, really.”
“What about that eye patch?”
“Oh,” said the pirate, “One day we were at sea, and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up, and one of them pooped in my eye.”
“You’re kidding,” said the bartender. “You couldn’t lose an eye just from bird poop.”
“It was my first day with the hook.”
———
Now there is a documented case of a businessman that did do it himself.
.
.
Dave Hicks,
Frank wants me to ask you a question: Was that pirate’s hook made of LEAD, or LED?
Ho ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Dan:
“Was that pirate’s hook made of LEAD, or LED?”
Wow, a Light Emitting Diode pirate’s hook?! That would be something. It would look great at Christmas too!
#20 BTW, MMM, it took me no more time to concoct that one than it did for you to come up with the lie that I fight “tooth and nail” every time John W brings up concealed carry and certainly a lot less time than it took you to cook up the fiction that VMI regularly commissions 50-60 percent of its graduates.
I never said you fought tooth and nail every single time… just that you did nearly every time.
I proved you wrong by showing you facts and figures from VMI (both published and spoken) that proved my point… and showed you to be incorrect… again.
The best you could muster was yourself intentionally fabricating a QUOTE that the commandant at VT supposedly said himself.
You really weren’t a very good reporter at all, were you?

Seems something or someone at your house is already on double rations and spreading the crap right here on the blog.
#44 “I never said you fought tooth and nail every single time… just that you did nearly every time.”
Fine, I’ll accept that’s what you said. It’s still a lie.
“I proved you wrong by showing you facts and figures from VMI (both published and spoken) that proved my point… and showed you to be incorrect… again.”
You showed that one year VMI claimed a commissioning rate of NEARLY or ALMOST 60 percent (for those of who who don’t know, that means less than 60 percent) and another year or two a commissioning rate of ABOUT 50 percent (for those of you who don’t know, that’s PR speak for close to but less than 50 percent). You then took those two and claimed that means they regularly commission between 50 and 60 percent. Quite a leap — and not true. You didn’t produce VMI’s rates for the approximate time that Tech claimed to double the commissioning rates of other senior military colleges.
“The best you could muster was yourself intentionally fabricating a QUOTE that the commandant at VT supposedly said himself.”
I fabricated nothing. I said the quote came from the commandant’s OFFICE — and it did. The VTCC has repeatedly claimed an 80 percent or close to an 80 percent commissioning rate and in the mid 2000s said that their rate then was double the rate of the other senior military colleges. You apparently think they aren’t telling the truth, but have been unable to produce proof of that.
Glad to sum it all up in one post for you, MMM.
#46 Yeah, boy, I got taken to the cleaners on that one.
Debbie, at 8:59…I think they’ve been created to make Suzie look good.
Well, gdad, the ex-reporter, is wrong again.
gdad, you even put quote marks around a statement that was printed in a magazine and then tagged ‘- The Commandant of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets’ directly on the end of it. For those of you who don’t know, that is saying that the Commandant uttered those exact words.
That, sir, was a lie on your behalf. Do you want a link to the blog where you typed that on your little keyboard?
I proved to you from two sources that VMI regularly commissions between 50% and 60%. I have given you proof but if you think they are lying, use your ex-reporting skillz and call them up and ask them. I’m not doing your research for you any longer.
I showed you that VMI commissions over 50%. You just stated that VT commissions nearly 80%. For those of you who don’t know, that is not twice the rate of VMI.
I don’t understand the right wing coming in here and confirming everything we have ever said or thought about them. It seems a strange tactic, but I guess if you are dumb enough to believe lies in the first place, you think it is credible to then spread them, and damn anyone who won’t accept them.
Wow, a Light Emitting Diode pirate’s hook?! That would be something. It would look great at Christmas too!

#52 Back again to my original statement, troll MMM, where I said the quote came from the commandant’s OFFICE. (the magazine article was written by Col. Rock Roszak). I put no “tag” (whatever that is) on it saying the commandant said it.
And funny thing how you claim the fact that you quoted a magazine article (which got all its info from the VMI PR office) makes your assertion true, while the fact that I quoted a magazine article proves nothing.
I’m done destroying your lies on this matter.
Kristen, at 10:32, that’s a hard thing to accomplish but they are darned sure trying their best.
No actually, gdad, one of the multiple sources I listed actually came from… well hell, here I will just show you AGAIN:
“Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was among the first to congratulate the 311 members of the Virginia Military Institute Class of 2011 who participated in commencement exercises when he delivered an address in Cameron Hall May 16.”
“Mullen also praised the Institute and the VMI superintendent, Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III ’62, for having the highest percentage of commissioning cadets in 20 years – nearly 60 percent of the graduates have or will soon commission.”
Not from the PR department at VMI, obviously. Since you apparently contacted them, what did they say?
gdad, I think we can agree that VMI’s office states that over 50% commission. I think we can agree that VT’s office states that nearly 80% commission.
Now, you said twice as many commission at VT. That was vastly incorrect.
gdad & MM,
Does it really make a difference??
Ron, as a fellow educator like myself, you can understand me wanting to help the less fortunate like gdad how to add and multiply.
I apologize for being so detailed and data oriented. It really shouldn’t be that hard for him to understand.
#57 “Mullen also praised the Institute and the VMI superintendent, Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III ’62, for having the highest percentage of commissioning cadets in 20 years – nearly 60 percent of the graduates have or will soon commission….
MMM then said, “Not from the PR department at VMI, obviously.”
And who do you think provided that number to Mullen? The VMI PR department, of course. In fact, they almost certainly gave it to Mullen’s speechwriter, who then wrote Mullen’s speech for him. Do you seriously think the the chairman of the JCOS went out and found this number himself and then wrote his whole speech? Man are you naive.
#58 “gdad, I think we can agree that VMI’s office states that over 50% commission.”
I agree that you found evidence that VMI said more than 50 percent commissioned once in the past 20 years. You found no evidence of this happening any other time. Glad to straighten you out on that.
So gdad, when you said VT commissioned twice as many as VMI, you were talking about 20 years ago?? Well let’s see your figured from VT 20 years ago. Better yet, I will take your word for it since I thought we were discussing recent commissions…. not last century.
If anyone provided the facts at VMI it was from the office of the Corps… not from the university’s “PR department”.
Glad to straighten you out on everything concerning this.
