Have folks here already discussed the proposed Va. constitutional amendment regarding imminent domain? I was initially in favor of it but then I got nervous when I saw who had proposed it. But I believe I’m still in favor. Any of you guys seriously opposed and, if so, why?

    Random thought:

If private industry is so much more efficient and nimble, ALWAYS, than the government, why hasn’t Mitt Romney marshalled some private industry-led hurricane recovery efforts?
Is it that they feel “it’s not their job?” (Sounds like a backhanded endorsement of FEMA).

Surly MITT can do a little better than collecting canned soup for people who can’t heat it because they have no power.

    Miriam,

    Here’s a link to your question: http://blogs.roanoke.com/roundtable/2012/10/vote-no-on-question-1/

    Dan,

Talk about scary this time of year, one of our sons received in the mail on Monday an envelop from Americans for Limited Government. It compared his voting, either ‘yes’ or ‘no’, in the past 3-4 presidential elections, as compared to several people living in the same voting district. My son said he didn’t care if someone looked to see whether he voted or not but was beyond irate in receiving a letter that also showed how others in his area voted, figuring others may have received similar letters with his voting records. Are you or your readers receiving similar letters?

“Local government officials fear that [the passing of the proposed eminent domain state Constitutional amendment in Virginia] could result in them having to pay business owners every time they close a city street for a festival, or any time they build a bypass road that might result in lost business for the retailers along the old road. They also say “economic development” can include the building of public roads or other public needs.”

What are the best states to retire??

I see a political trend if you look closely at both lists. Blue States and Red States….

Courtesy of CQ, “Obama just dropped by FEMA for a briefing and is about to leave for Atlantic City, where he’ll spend almost four hours viewing some of the most dramatic of Sandy’s consequences — both on the ground and by air along the reconfigured, battered, swamped and now fire-swept fragile barrier islands that only 48 hours ago cleanly separated the Atlantic Ocean from Barnegat Bay.

New Jersey’s hardly a swing state (its 14 electoral votes are a lock for the Democrats), but the political benefit of the trip for the president is nonetheless palpable.”

Still haven’t gotten a reply on this from a single Romney supporter. I can’t imagine why:

Tell us what Romney’s five-point plan is, and name a single economist not associated with the Romney campaign who thinks it will actually lead to short-term job growth.

Bonus points if you can explain how it differs in any substantial regard from the Bush agenda.

I’ve got a nice, shiney dome…and I like it (as does my wife, which is perhaps the most important).

And speaking of my wife, she did get one of those mailers about voting, with several of our neighbors similarly listed. But, it was incorrect…it showed her as not having voted in 2008, when I know for a fact she did (she stood in line with me). Neither of us were amused. It also listed one of the people who rented a room from us, but who has lived in New York since 2009.

    Five Point plan:

    1. Do something different than Obama’s Spending MORE PLAN and adding to the debt.

    2. DO something different than Obama’s Taxing small business owners Plan (http://video.foxnews.com/v/1935302966001/obama-re-election-a-threat-to-white-castle/?intcmp=obnetwork

    3. Do something different than Obama’s Health Care plan that kill small business owners. (I have a family member who needs to hire but can’t because he can’t afford health insurance)

    4. Do something different than Obama’s admin. handing out food stamps to 12 million more people.

    5. Do something different than Obama’s giving millions to companies that go bankrupt, and putting harsh EPA restrictions on companies that cost ‘coal’ jobs.

    In other words:

When things just keep on suckin, its time to make a change.

    Hey you libs,

Help me unnerstand sumpthin’, please. Here goes…

    1. back when obuma told the navy seals to take out bin laden, we got to see a pensive obumer and his hit squad all immersed in furrowed-brow poses in the situation room…

    2. back when the terrorists attacked our consulate in Benghazi, and killed 4 americans during a seven-hour fire fight, and during which video was viewable by the same folks pictured in the situation room in No. 1 above, with their furrowed brows…., hey where’s the picture?

    3. We just saw pics of obumer and others, all with those furrowed brows, in the situation room, evidently to show those brows to all, and to signify their concern for the victims of Sandy.

Hey, what happened to the pics of obumer and his other brow-furrowers in the situation room? Where are they…, or, where is IT?

I say obumer was asleep. …little did we know that obumer was actually thinking, when hillary asked about that “2 a.m. phone call” during the 2008 campaign, …”heck, hill, I’ll be sleeping at that hour, and all my calls will be forwarded to my vp”.

Hey you two dans, dano and danr, why do you guys think that we haven’t seen any pictures released by the white house showing the obama in the situation room full of folks with furrowed-brows…regarding Benghazi?

@pistol pete: 1.

    1. Obama has brought the deficit down by around $300 billion since he took office. Most of the current deficit is the result of the continuation of the Bush tax cuts, two wars that weren’t paid for and slump in revenues from the recession.

    2. Obama has cut small business taxes repeatedly.

    3. Obamacare includes subsidies and tax breaks to help small businesses afford health insurance for their employees.

    4. More people have gotten food stamps because the recession made more people eligible for food stamps.

    5. Obama has a better success rate at investing in companies than Bain Capital, and coal employment is actually up since Obama took office.

    Want to try again?

  31. Dan Radmacher | October 31, 2012 at 5:15 pm

@Frank, the response from Newt on the other thread was not from a Romney supporter. That you think it is explains a lot. An awful lot.

    Here’s the attached letter:

    My Good friend,
    Greetings to you
Before I introduce myself, I wish to inform you that this mail is not a hoax mail and I urge you to treat it with seriousness. This letter must come to you as a big surprise, but I believe it is only a day that people meet and become great friends and business partners. My name is Mr. Dickson Humado. The present branch Manager Of a bank here in Ghana. write you this proposal in good faith, believing that I can trust you with the information I am about to reveal to you. As I said, I have a transaction that will benefit both of us, as your assistance is required as a foreigner. I use to work as head of the Accounts department in my bank head office, but last December I was asked to take position of a Manager at one of our branches to replace the former who passed on, so that was how I became the present Manager and discovered a Fortune. As I resumed duty, during my routine check and taking over, I discovered an account with a substantial sum of money in United States dollars that has been floating and unaccounted for the past 4 years. From my investigation, I discovered that the branch in which I am the manager, made excess profit from an accrued interest on money deposited by the Economic community of West African states contract payment committee, and the money has been
floating. In fact, I have PLACED this fund in an ESCROW CALL ACCOUNT without a legitimate beneficiary and which will change to your name as soon as you identify your interest in writing. The escrow call account is a secret type of account in my bank and no other person knows about this account or any thing concerning it, the account has no other beneficiary. I have kept a close monitoring of the account since then. As the branch manager of the bank, I cannot directly take out this money without the help of a foreigner and that is why I am contacting you for an assistance to claim the funds and share it with me. I have the power to influence the release of the funds to any foreigner that comes up as the depositor of the money, with the correct information concerning the account, which I shall give you. Your responsibility will be to assist me move the fund to your country. It is going to be a Bank-to-Bank transfer and I need to assure you that there are no risks involved in this Business. The transaction will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of law. If you accept to work with me, I want you to state how you wish us to share the funds in percentage, so that both parties will be satisfied. Contact me as soon as you receive this message if you feel we can work together, so we can go over the details. Thanking you in advance and May God bless you. Please, treat with utmost confidentiality. I wait your urgent response.
    Regards,
    Mr. Dickson Humado.

    Kristen,
Frank does have a point… we know they had the “live feed” in Libya, we know the video works in the WH situation room, we know “someone” made the decision to not send help.
It is a pretty simple question; was the president there? If so, did he give orders as “commander and chief”? If he was not there, first, why not? Second, who gave the orders? (do you think the president does not remember if he was in the room?)

The only conclusions are incompetence or ineptness. Which do you prefer?

As a side note; are you really comfortable with an administration that takes 8 weeks to figure out who made a single decision? The question is not so much if they made the “right” decision (I believe they did not); the question is who made the decision and why hide it from the American public?

Sadly, the simple answer seems to be “election day”.

  34. Dan Casey | October 31, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Dan R, let me interpret for Pistol Pete on the 5 point plan:

    1. Cut income taxes on the wealthy.
    2. Cut income taxes on corporations (especially the ones who pay none now).
    3. Cut the tax on capital gains and dividends to zero.
    4. Raise income on the 47 percent who pay none (screw them, they’re not voting for me!)
    4. Bomb Iran (with Israel).

That’s what they want to do.

  35. mike O | October 31, 2012 at 5:30 pm

I heard obama’s first decision as a presidential candidate (BIDEN) tell his audience he was going to give them “the whole load”

Does anyone wish they were there to experience that?

  36. Dan Radmacher | October 31, 2012 at 5:34 pm

Seems like a good time to bring this up again:

“Let’s be clear: There is no indication — none — that U.S military officials advised the president or anyone in the administration that a rescue operation was possible, and that the administration ignored that offer. The evidence is entirely to the contrary.”

Not that evidence matters to Romney supporters, who probably believe his lies about Chrysler and GM even after Chrysler and GM exposed them.

  37. J.M.White | October 31, 2012 at 5:34 pm

Is he abolishing the number 5, too?
I can’t vote for a man who doesn’t believe in base-10 math. It’s against my religion.

  38. Dan Casey | October 31, 2012 at 5:40 pm

Ooops! J.M. White, I love the number 5! Just boned it is all.

  39. mike O | October 31, 2012 at 5:41 pm

    Dan,
Do you really believe that half of Americans should pay no federal income taxes to support all who are truly in need and all the government “does” for them?
Not even ten dollars?, five?, one? a dime five cents?

Would you not agree that everyone should pay at least a simple penny?

  40. J.M.White | October 31, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Phew! I’d hate for that to be the reason he doesn’t get my vote.

    …I have so many others.

  41. Debbie | October 31, 2012 at 5:53 pm

John Wilburn, when we come into our respective fortunes, I think we should share some with Dan and the bloggers of our choice on here. I don’t know how much you’re getting, but with 28 million I can afford to be generous.

  42. mike O | October 31, 2012 at 5:58 pm

    dan r,
Although that was not the question…(the real question is who advised/decided that rescue was not possible) but.. I’ll bite…

You are saying that the best military minds suggested rescue was impossible, however two/three navy seals succeeded in rescuing people from the consulate.
You are saying that as the seals “painted” targets, we had no assets to assist within 7 hours.
You are saying that the “only” alternative this administration had was to allow terrorists to kill our citizens on “American soil”.

To accept that is your decision… I know military people that would never accept “defeat and death of our people”

I will ask the same question… inept or incompetent?

Something to ponder: if Iran attacks Israel, or China, Japan… do you think it will be OK to wait a couple of months to “figure it out” before we take a decision?

is it any wonder we command no respect in the international community?

  43. Frank | October 31, 2012 at 6:02 pm

    hey danr,

Whether it comes from a Romney supporter or not, doesn’t matter….does it? It rings true to me. If’n a lib wants to go through the excersize of responding to your question, i’m ok with that. The Romney camp has a big tent.

Sheesh. danr, you are picky, picky, picky.

  48. Henry | October 31, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Dan Dan , the White House’s man. How about showing us the data instead of feeding us the White House spin? You know, the facts.

Too bad Woodward and Bernstein didn’t call the White House and ask “Mr Nixon, how can I help you today?” It would have saved us a bunch of trouble.

  49. Sandi Saunders | October 31, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Henry, is it bias you hate or just liberal bias? Do you whine about right wing bias?

  50. Kristen | October 31, 2012 at 7:41 pm

mikeo, I think there’s another big option. And incompetence and ineptness mean the same thing.

The more likely option is that – despite Frank’s and yours and lots of other’s on here assiduous googling and cutting and pasting, we have no real idea of what happened that day far less what the parameters are for calling in military backup in scenes of chaos. Do we ALWAYS drop in military to Americans in distress overseas? We don’t do it HERE. And I’m confident that no one on this blog knows the relevant answers to these questions.

Being in the diplomatic service in third world countries is dangerous. I doubt anyone was unaware of it when they took the job. I also know better than to think that the posturing of the right on “Benghazi” is nothing more than seizing a chance to try and pin something unpleasant on Obama.

Is losing 4 Americans a big deal? Sure it is, but on the other hand we just lost 50 from Sandy. Life in uncertain, things happen, and everyone’s a hero with 20/20. But no one’s voting for Romney because of any of this.

  51. Kristen | October 31, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Totes unfortunate, Debbie…I was picking out a new purse. :)

“Why don’t we pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting anyone from learning anything? If it works as good as Prohibition, within five years Americans would be the smartest people on earth.”

    :)

    Frank,

You don’t even realize what the person wrote in the other thread was criticizing Romney, not defending him.

Though he did know Romney’s ludicrous five-point plan better, apparently, than any of his supporters on this blog.

That’s almost as telling as your inability to distinguish sarcasm from praise.

Apropos of Halloween, some may be interested in the following spooky song lyrics. Called “Scare Force 109″, ballad scholars believe it is similar to an old country song, “Phantom 309″ by Red Sovine, which was a recitation about a hitchhiker picked up by a ghostly truckdriver in his rig, the Phantom 309, then left at a diner with a dime for coffee, where the hitchhiker hears the legend of the trucker’s heroic sacrifice:

    I was in Atlantic City
    Trying to stay afloat,
but when the big storm hit
    I didn’t have a boat.

I got so tired of waiting
    and wading all around,
That I finally took a ride
    on a bus a-leaving town.

I rode a lot of miles
    those first couple days,
figured I’d be home in a week
if my luck held out this way.

But the third night I got stranded
with the ride no longer free,
at a cold and lonely mansion
    in Washington D.C.

I was hungry, wet and freezin’
    and stifling a yawn,
when the lights of a helicopter
    spread across the lawn.

    The chopper’s lights were bright
and made it kinda hard to see,
but I swear I saw a dog on the roof
and rich guys inside, drinking tea.

I pinched myself to be sure
it was real what I saw and heard,
and then climbed into the cabin
    of that cozy whirlybird.

By the window sat a man
who, with a creepy robot laugh,
    motioned me to sit down
    beside his campaign staff.

“Willard Mitt’s the name” he said
and then I told him mine,
and then he said “The name of this rig
    is Scare Force One-O-Nine”.

    He introduced three other guys
as Newt, and Rick, and Ryan,
and said they’d always been pals
but somethin’ told me he was lyin’.

He asked me why I looked
    so poor, so helter skelter,
I told him ’bout my struggle
    just to find some shelter.

“I know about shelters!” he said,
    “And family trusts and such,
    “I recommend the Cayman Islands
    And Switzerland very much”.

He said his rig was loaded up
    with cargo bound for China,
    hauling lots of textile jobs
    from out of Carolina.

I listened as he lectured me
about job creators on the march,
    until suddenly ahead we saw
the light from a golden arch.

    He said “I’m sorry, fella,
this is as far as you can go,
The only ones who stay aboard
Are those with a quid pro quo”.

I said “I’m broke, begging for change,
    And that’s a fact I will admit”,
“I will admit nothing!” he said,
Not even that my name’s Willard Mitt!”

“But didn’t you say that’s your name?”
I asked, as he stared unblinking.
He said, “No it is, Yes it isn’t,
And you’re a chump with victim thinking!”

Then he gave me a coupon
with an odd look in his eyes,
said “Here’s some help from Willard Mitt,
    sort of a consolation prize”.

So I climbed out and looked around
and that was all it took,
“So long” he sneered and disappeared
    with one last funny look.

I smelled hot food, so I went inside
and found a place to sit,
and I asked the crowd, right out loud,
    “How ’bout that Willard Mitt”?

    Suddenly the place grew hushed,
    Why-they even stopped the mopping.
I swear it got so quiet in there
you could hear their wages dropping.

I asked the manager, “Have I said
    something wrong, did I offend”?
    “No”, she said, “this happens,
    well, every now and then”

And as she spoke I could see
    her face was getting pale,
still she went ahead and told me
    Willard Mitt’s ghostly tale:

“Long ago in the very spot
where he gave you a lift,
    legend has it Willard Mitt
    spontaneously riffed”.

    “At a fancy fundraiser
where you saw that chopper land,
There was a line of billionaires
    with PAC money in hand”

“They might all have been clothed
in suits of black that night,
    But Willard Mitt sacrificed himself
with a hard turn to the right”

“Well, Willard Mitt gave up himself
When he saw no cameras rolling,
He steered himself to the truth
    instead of his latest polling.

    His bravely promised the plutocrats
    protection from Wall Street occupation,
And a plan for a leveraged buyout
of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

“He aimed right at the middle class
    and slammed those poor pedestrians,
He mowed down forty seven percent
    and two well dressed equestrians”.

    “Willard Mitt disappeared after that,
but some say he still lingers,
just like the smell of freedom fries
    on Rush Limbaugh’s fingers”

    “But every now and then
    some stranger will come by,
and just like you, from out of the blue,
Willard Mitt will let ‘em fly”

    “So have another ketchup pack,
    use the coupon another time,
Or keep it as a souvenir
    from Scare Force 109″!!!!!!!

GOP hopeful: ‘Rape thing’ not cause for abortion

By ASSOCIATED PRESS | 10/31/12 8:11 PM EDT

OLYMPIA, Wash. — A Republican congressional candidate says abortion should not be legal, even when it involves “the rape thing,” according to audio provided Wednesday to The Associated Press.

An activist working on behalf of liberal group FUSE Washington asked questions of Republican hopeful for the Washington 1st Congressional District John Koster during a fundraiser Sunday. Koster said he does not oppose abortion when the life of the mother is in danger but then explains he would oppose it when it involves rape or incest.

    More than one in four

    Wednesday, October, 31, 2012; 10:56 PM

    by Priscilla Alvarez, News Reporter

One in four college women report experiencing attempted rape or acts that meet the legal definition of rape, but the number only skims the effect of sexual crime on college campus.

Sexual assault is underreported on college campuses because many women are embarrassed by it or believe it is rare.

A former student of Amherst College, Angie Epifano, had the same mentality until she published her rape account in the opinions column of Amherst’s student newspaper.

A week ago the Romney campaign and Mason Adams were trying to float the idea that the Obama campaign was “writing off Virginia” to concentrate their resources somewhere else. That’s why Obama will be in the state this weekend for two rqllies, Joe Biden will be in the state for rallies on Monday and now Bill Clinton is coming to Roanoke on Saturday. All of
Rmoney’s spin is simple designed to try to convince people that they might as well stay home because Obama’s giving up. Just another tactic out of the Karl Rove playbook.

Here is Obama’s 2 point economic recovery plan.

1-Keep doing the same stuff because we continue to lose jobs, more people are on food stamps, and the dollar is deflated. Eventually (even though its been 4 years) it will work.

2-Make business owners pay more taxes. Besides, nothing gives a small business owner the ability to hire more people…than having to pay MORE taxes.

Boy the Democrats finally made it clear. Makes so much sense.

#60 Here come the myth spreaders.

  62. Dan Radmacher | November 1, 2012 at 9:42 am

Pistol Pete: We continue to lose more jobs? In what universe?

Where I live, we’ve added 5 million private sector jobs in the last two years, and are up nearly a million jobs net since Obama took office, even though the economy was losing hundreds of thousands of jobs a month when he was sworn in.

Oh, and small businesses have seen their taxes cut repeatedly under Obama.

It should say something to America that the right wing thinks it can only defeat Obama by lying shamelessly about his record and hoping enough uninformed voters believe their crap.

  63. pistol pete | November 1, 2012 at 10:32 am

    gdad – radmacher:

    2008 unemployment 7.8%
    2012 unemployment 7.8%

Great job growth Obama! You are the job creation extraordinaire!

  64. pistol pete | November 1, 2012 at 10:34 am

gdad with post #61 gives us his great wisdom, with the same fact filled response he has given 1000 times.

  65. Dan Radmacher | November 1, 2012 at 11:19 am

Five million private-sector jobs in two years, Pete. That is far better job growth than we experienced in President Bush’s first term.

  66. gdad | November 1, 2012 at 11:28 am

#64 Well, petey, Dan R said it for me by pointing out the tax cuts for small businesses. You’re just spreading the fertilizer.

  67. gdad | November 1, 2012 at 11:29 am

#65 Dan R, you forgot to complain about the fact that public sector jobs have declined under Obama. Yes, I know, I thought right wingers WANTED public sector jobs to decline, but I heard some of them whining about Obama not mentioning that just yesterday. Strange.

  68. Ron May | November 1, 2012 at 11:31 am

Sadly even Governor is not immune to damage during the Hurricane.

  69. Dan Radmacher | November 1, 2012 at 12:12 pm

I was going to get into that, gdad. We’ve lost almost 700,000 public sector jobs. Under Bush, the public sector GAINED nearly 1 million public sector jobs. Think what the unemployment rate would be if those public sector jobs had been added to the economy instead of taken away.

  70. gdad | November 1, 2012 at 1:58 pm

#69 Now let me make sure I have this straight, Dan R. According to the right, government jobs bad and public-secter jobs good. So, we should praise George Bush, who oversaw a big increase in government jobs and a decline in private jobs, and excoriate Obama, who presided over a drop in evil public jobs.

    Got it.

  71. mike O | November 1, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Kristen, Re: “we have no real idea of what happened that day”

I agree… however, we do know that obama either “was” or “was not” in watching real-time.
If he “was”, he has stated that he gave “orders” (when he knew) to “do everything” to protect our citizens. Why were they not followed and who choose not to follow the orders of the commander and chief?

If he “was not” first why not? Second, who was giving orders and what were they?

Simple questions that do not take months to answer.
At least then we would have some “idea of what happened that day”.

  72. Frank | November 1, 2012 at 8:19 pm

hey dan r and your post at #53,

your post makes no sense. …in my opinion, newt layed out romney’s plan pretty well. why do you feel the need to equivocate on something so trivial as whether the writer was a lib or a supporter of Romney?

picky, picky, picky. but then, that’s what libs do.

  73. Dan Radmacher | November 1, 2012 at 9:07 pm

    Frank,

Go back and read Newt’s post. I don’t have the time or inclination to find it. He laid Romney’s plan well enough, but dissected it and dissed it thoroughly as he went. You apparently missed that part. Like I said, Newt knows Romney’s plan better than any of Romney’s actual supporters, but he thinks it’s foolish and unworkable. If you agree with that, then maybe you and I don’t disagree after all.

Kind of hard to tell with you.

  74. Dan Casey | November 1, 2012 at 11:15 pm

    Dan R,

The expression you’re fumbling around for, directed toward Frank is:

“I can explain it TO you, but I can’t understand it FOR you.”
