Sandy already making impact on Eastern Shore

On the Eastern Shore of Va.

From the blogger Ron May:

“This is a photo I just received from my son on the Eastern Shore of Virginia taken not long ago.

It is what he calls his oyster house where the beginning and end of the oyster raising process begins.

On a normal day the water level is about 4 to 5 feet lower.  The main part of Hurricane Sandy isn’t even there yet. “

Winds currently between 30 & 40 miles per hour. Steady, but light rain right now.

    Ron,

Hope he has everything shored up and tied down.

Asked [in 2011] about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims… candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2011/06/14/244973/mitt-romney-federal-disaster-relief-for-tornado-and-flood-victims-is-immoral-makes-no-sense-at-all/

Schools closed in Fairfax County tomorrow and Tuesday and Federal Govt. shut down for all but essential services tomorrow.

    Dave Hicks,

Thanks. Boats are out of the water and everything is secure as it can be. He went through it last year with Irene. Just have to ride it out.

My inlaws are looking at a direct hit on their beach house, and they’re down there now trying to figure out what to do about that.

  7. Ron May | October 28, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Is that beachhouse on the Eastern Shore of Maryland or Jersey?

  8. Dan Casey | October 28, 2012 at 9:45 pm

Maryland, Ron. It’s actually not on the beach. It’s on the St. Martin’s Neck River in Bishopville, 8-10 miles inland.

  9. Ron May | October 28, 2012 at 9:49 pm

    Good luck with that Dan.

  10. Ron May | October 28, 2012 at 9:50 pm

I hope you all don’t get hit with the snow they are predicting for Western Virginia and West Virginia.

  11. Teresa | October 28, 2012 at 10:46 pm

My cousin’s widow lives in a beachfront house in MD and is expecting a direct hit. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer last week. If you are a praying type, please keep her in your prayers.

  12. gdad | October 28, 2012 at 10:56 pm

#10 Ron, right here in Roanoke and even in Blacksburg they don’t expect anything in the way of snow, darn it.

  13. Ron May | October 29, 2012 at 7:18 am

The latest report from my son indicates that winds are approaching 40 mph. The Chincoteague Causeway is closed and high tide in Wacheprague is predicted to be 9 feet above normal this morning.

Hope you all are spared from most of this trouble.

  14. J.M.White | October 29, 2012 at 8:25 am

There’s a nice snow/sleet/rain mix falling in Blacksburg right now and has been for about the last two hours. The cold-air wedge is in place; we’ll see if the storm can push it out before it really starts coming down.

  15. Ron May | October 29, 2012 at 8:52 am

    Teresa,

Healing & safety to your family member.

    Re: Comment by Ron May — October 28, 2012 @ 9:50 pm

There is a few flakes falling in the NRV, as I type this. Had not seen any flakes earlier. Nothing sticking. Mostly light rain. Right at 32º at my place.

Overnight, NOAA’s NWS changed the forecast to “Snow Occasional” 80-100% chance this am, all rain after 11 am; followed by “Snow” 60-70% chance tonight and most of tomorrow; with little of no accumulation.

So, it still looks as if we are dodging the bullet on that issue as well as the seriously dangerous winds (mid 50mph gust forecasted).

There is still a blizzard warning for west of us, however.

Hope you are getting good personal update from the Eastern Shore.

DaveH, since I can safely talk about visiting places now that the Tourism Nanny has headed for Africa…have you been to Tangier?

  19. Ron May | October 29, 2012 at 3:19 pm

So far so good Dave Hicks. They are just waiting it out for now. The photo of Tangier Island brings back memories. I’ve visited there several times during more peaceful weather.

    Re: Comment by Kristen — October 29, 2012 @ 3:07 pm

    Yup.

Was based out of AA CO. MD and had a nice boat on the bay. The waters / islands from Bishops Head down to Tangier were favorites of mine — when we had the time (usually more that just overnight) and gas money to make the run.

  21. Dave Hicks | October 29, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Back to light mixed snow & rain in the NRV. Still calling for little or no snow accumulation.

I wonder if Mitt remembers calling for ending FEMA in the GOP debates?

    “Mitt Romney said:

“Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?”

When asked if that also meant disaster relief, Romney replied:

“We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.”

    http://www.inquisitr.com/380145/mitt-romney-had-called-for-end-of-fema-at-republican-debate/

You get what you vote for. I don’t like having to bring up Mitt’s words in a time of national emergency, however, what would we be looking at right now if Mitt WAS president.

    Think about it.

BTW I know he’s got Romensia and his campaign says he wouldn’t end FEMA, but I also know what he said during the GOP debates. It’s on record.

  23. Dave Hicks | October 29, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Well looks as if NJ can extend it’s long string of years w/o a Hurricane.

Just saw a pic of the Ocean City Pier; it’s lost over 100′ of midsection.

  25. Warren | October 29, 2012 at 9:00 pm

It’s a huge tragedy in the loss of the H.M.S. Bounty replica, with her captain still missing and a crewmember unresponsive after rescue.

  26. Ron May | October 29, 2012 at 9:47 pm

I saw that news report Warren. While the loss of the ship & more so the crew, I have to admit that my first thought was what were they doing out there in the first place?
