Media Buyer Plays Vital, Unsung Role in Politics

Forget the strategists. Forget the campaign advisers and the pollsters. Now is the time in the campaign when a low-profile and little-understood player wields a great deal of influence: the media buyer.
The beginning of September through mid-October of an election year is the most crucial period when it comes to moving TV ad reservations, buying new ad time and finding out what spending decisions the other party is making. Media buyers play an integral role in this process, despite the fact that they rarely gain any public recognition for their work.

But the media buyer’s true value to a campaign is the proprietary knowledge that only he and his colleagues traffic in: how the opposition is spending – or not spending – its ad dollars on television, particularly during the homestretch of a race. What a buyer knows and how quickly that information is communicated could mean life or death for a political career.

Timing is everything. It is all a poker game. A media buyer wants to buy early enough to lock in lower rates, but not so early as to telegraph a campaign’s strategy.

To tell the truth, it probably started even before that. As a matter of fact, the US has been funneling weapons to countries all over the world for a very long time. You should watch “Lord of War” sometime. While fictional (but inspired by a real person/story), it highlights the very real facts of what we often do with our weapons when we’re done in a combat zone, along with highlighting Nicolas Cage’s predictable acting.
I don’t hear you complaining about the Stinger missiles we sent to Afghanistan in the 80′s. I don’t hear you talking about the Iran-Contra affair. Actually, I don’t hear you complaining about the literally millions of guns we have flooded South America with in the 70′s and 80′s in order to fight the scourge of communism. In fact, we still send guns there today; just ask the Columbian rebels.
Stop acting like this is something that just spontaneously erupted when a black man took office. You’re being terribly selective with your pseudo-outrage. We ALL understand that you don’t like Obama, Frank. Can you at least find something to dislike about him of which half a dozen other presidents (from both parties) aren’t guilty of the doing exact same thing?

I agree with many of your observations. However, to belabor the “race” card just a little longer, I say with all honesty that I’ve not seen what I consider to be racist comments on any of dano’s blog threads that I’ve commented on. I’ve certainly seen many comments in opposition to obama’s policies. And, Ive seen many comments from libs who call RWers’ racists, along with other epithets, because the RWers dare to rail against obama’s policies, or the effect thereof. But that is it. I’ve seen lots and lots of comments related to obama’s policies, both pro and con. But I’ve not seen any comments from obvious RWers even remotely related to obama’s race, color, or national origin. As far as obama’s place of birth, I’ve not seen where those who don’t believe obama was born in the USA are racists. Those folks have certainly been BRANDED as racist by the lib media, and libs in general, but I’ve not been able to figure out how NOT believing obama was born in Hawaii means one is a racist.
That said, I’ve voted for both Doug Wilder and Tim Kaine for Governor, and can’t admit to voting dem in any other state election. I’ve been very happy with my vote for only one of those dems for governor.
That said, on to some of the other issues you and I have raised.
1. I doubt that I have any seedier data than you might have concerning our gov’mint’s involvement in arms crap. However, the F & F stuff seems to me to be seedier than any I’ve seen. Perhaps it’s because it is a department of justice program that I feel that way. and, perhaps it’s because of the last minute Executive Order which has gotten under my skin. Or, perhaps it’s because obama publicly blames Bush for the F and F Program….and you and I both know that’s not the case. Perhaps it’s because I just can’t imagine any good motive, and certainly any law enforcement motive, which makes sense to let such weapons get in the hands of violent drug gangs….with no means of tracking!! I think holder ought publicly tar and feather, then run out of town, all people in his department who knew of that program, and did nothing to stop it. In the absence of that, then Holder should get the same treatment. and, obama has issued an Executive Order preventing ANY more details to emerge. Are ya smelling anything yet, J.M? Unlike you, I’m not ready to give obama’s administration a pass…just because other administrations may have also gotten away with bad stuff.
2. As far as the difference between our gov’mint giving stingers openly to the afghanis to fight against the soviets, well, I just don’t a comparison to our DOJ “giving” assault rifles to organized drug gangs in Mexico to use against….who? other organized drug gangs? Oh, NOW I get it!! whew, I finally understand! The guns that the DOJ let walk must’ve had the following government-issued, DOJ-approved instructions, to which the DOJ was certain that the drug gangs would adhere, “these weapons are NOT FOR USE against innocent Mexican and American citizens, nor law enforcement of both countries”. these weapons are approved ONLY FOR USE against other drug gangs”. ok, now i get it.
2. Another topic involving blatantly obvious “stone-walling” from obama’s administration is the on-going and growing tragedy of Libya. I know YOU know the trajectory of the details. I know the trajectory of the details. And, I suspect we both smell the same thing. However, the difference is, me stating my opinion will quite likely be shouted down by libs calling me, among other things, a racist.
Well, J.M., that’s about all this gomer can muster up at the moment. you know, the B-side never was “all that” was it? Although, I had an old Beach Boys 45 with “Good vibrations” on the A-side, and another pretty good tune (that I can’t remember) on the B-side. Suggest you do a little more research J.M.
Wide Receiver was the operation run by the Bush administration. The program’s objective was to make arrests of gun trafficers. It was smaller in scope (only a few hundred guns). The guns were equiped with tracing devises. It was discovered the tracing was not working out; therefore, the program was stopped by the Bush administration.
Fast and Furious, despite Obama’s lying reference to the Bush program, was
started under the Obama administration. The goal was not clear but appears to be the undermining of the 2nd amendment by providing state of the art weapons to the drug cartels. Over 2000 guns were allowed to cross
the border without tracing equipment. Over 300 Mexican citizens have died
and 1 US Border Patrol agent. Univision reported this week that the operation was much wider in scope that originally thought involving ATF ops in FL, TX, AZ and the countries of Mexico, Haiti and Colombia. Mexico
is incensed as some of the guns have now been tied to a birthday party massacre which resulted in the deaths of about 20 teenagers.
Presently many of the key records and documents have been not disclosed by
Executive Order of Obama which also means Obama had to be involved. Otherwise, Executive Order would not apply. The Univision story break is
BIG as it may finally force the Obama Administration to cease stonewalling
on releasing the records. More at eleven.
Frank isn’t just blowing smoke. This is criminal activity and Obama has already admitted involvement via issue of the Executive Order. Holder has already been held in civil and criminal contempt of Congress over the records that were available.

People have died, lot’s of them. The pictures on Univision of the birthday party massacre are of blood running in the streets. Our ambassador in Libya was tortured, murdered and dragged in the streets.
All of us should be demanding that both the Obama administration and the mainstream media come clean on these matters. Executive Privilege is
not a vehicle for criminal activity coverup. As citizens we do have a right to know the full story on these issues. The only shame is not demanding full accountability.
If EITHER of these scandals, F&F or Libyagate and their cover-ups had happened with a Republican president, everyone in here knows damn well the media would be pounding him on it. Yeah, Leon. That’s the Bush operation he was he was talking about, Wide Receiver. That’s for reminding us of that name. Obviously where were some lower-level cowboys in ATF who wouldn’t take know for an answer, so they took advantage of the change in administrations to keep doing whatever they wanted to do. I’m sure they’re gone now that Obama’s gotten rid of them. Its too bad that it meant 600 guns went to Mexico. But that’s a drop in the bucket compared to what’s already there.

My mind is a trough of useless information, Frank. I have a semi-eidetic memory (though less reliable now), so I can still see my old beat-up 45 in my hands. It also brings up a bad memory: my stepfather burning almost 4,000 albums of mine in a brush pile, including that 45.
I can also remember the entire day of my third birthday. It plays like a movie in my mind when I think of it.

Dan: late summer, 1995 – on the family farm in Hiwassee – it was raining and I was pushing the old burn pile up with the tractor to start a new one. I saw a familiar sight: My autographed (including Cliff Burton’s, may he RIP) Metallica – Ride The Lightning album, half charred. I remember it being the first time I truly understood the expression, “My heart sank”. I then noticed piles of melted vinyl everywhere. I ran down to the shed where I stored them and sure enough, they were gone. He was nice enough to keep my totes, though.
From Chopin to DEVO, Willie Nelson to Chuck Berry and Beethoven to Black Sabbath, it was a great and varied selection. They were some Manilow records in there, too, but I don’t admit it often. Shaun Cassidy, The Chipmunks, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, abba, Hank Williams, Sr., they were in there too. 37 were autographed, 55 were special editions (still in original plastic, unopened) and no less than 15 of them were worth well over a hundred dollars each back then. The collection of modern music spanned from the late ’40′s to the late ’80′s.
He has this problem where about once a year, he just starts throwing things away in a fit. Then, two weeks later, he’s asking me what he did with some do-dad or thingamajig and I have to tell him that he threw it away or burned it. He then argues with me with phrases like, “Why would I do that?” or “I don’t throw away stuff I know I’ll need, Jemo (nickname alert).” So we search for hours, looking for the thing I had in my hands and told him we would need when he told me to chuck it in the back of the truck.
To tell the truth, I haven’t helped him with one of his clean and sweeps since the record incident. I think my mom kind of put the kibosh on his clean and sweep operations, too. Some of those albums she had given to me and they were from her teenage years. I don’t think I’ve ever truly forgiven him.
Thankfully, he’s been much more environmentally conscious in recent years about what he burns. He recycles almost everything, too. That much does make me proud of him. I think he scarred me, though – I have this recurring dream where I’m playing an album and it starts melting on the turntable. It’s not frightening or anything, just disturbing.

No, Warren. You just don’t understand. If guns were supplied by a Republican administration, there is zero proof that any innocents were killed with them, even if there is. If it happens under a Democratic administration, it means that innocents are getting mowed down every single day in cold blood.

1) Give us a list of the actions Obama took that armed “THE DRUG CARTELS.” a) Which gun dealers did he speak to, to accomplish this. Surely they would have come out of the woodwork by now. b) Did Obama personally hand over the arms to narcotics traffickers? c) If not, whom did Obama tell to hand the arms over? d) Why haven’t those people come forward?
a) Obama spoke to no gun dealers.
b) Obama handed over no weapons.
c) Obama told nobody to had the arms over.
d) They haven’t come forward because Obama never gave orders to anyone about this.

At WORST, this is what happened here: Operation Wide Receiver was conceived in the ATF under the Bush Administration, by some civil service underling who has some loose screws. (It’s almost certain neither Bush, nor his attorneys general, knew anything about it). Somewhere along the line a superior to Loose Screws realized how bad it could go and shut it down. Loose Screws saw an opening to renew the program with the new administration, and somehow sold it to a superior, under a new name, Fast & Furious, and it failed spectacularly in all the ways that whoever shut down Wide Reciever had feared. Holder was unaware of it because he wasn’t reading every line in every report that got forwarded to him. He didn’t know about it, and neither did Obama.
What you’re missing is that two very similar programs were created, both failed, and you give one a pass while treating the other like it’s high treason. They BOTH armed cartels, so if that’s your rationale, then you must condemn both equally.
BTW, I condemn both of them. I’m not trying to mitigate or marginalize the damage done by F&F. I just couldn’t, in good conscience, damn one while completely ignoring or marginalizing the other. Gotta keep it honest, brother.
