Roanoke business blows whistle on GOP fiscal-cliff games

Rep.Pete Sessions, R-Texas

Note from Dan: A Roanoke businessman who wants to remain nameless emailed this fax from Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, to me today.

Dan,

The attached fax was sent to my office in error from the National Republican Congressional Committee, intended for someone who used to work here.  To say that person is a right winger is putting it mildly.

My point for sending it is this: From the Republicans, with all of their rhetoric ad nausea about the fiscal cliff, the call and subsequent pledge for bipartisanship and the fear mongering predicting we are headed for fiscal ruin like Greece . . . they have time to crank out worthless drivel like this form letter?

What a bunch of babies the Republican have morphed into.

I am ready for the fiscal cliff my parachute, motorcycle helmet and
    knee pads arrived today.

I am also sick of the term “fiscal cliff”.

    Dan,
Are you suggesting, it is ok for obama to spend taxpayer money and his time, flying around promoting his agenda; but a republican can’t send out a fax seeking support from those who will be punished with new taxes?

Personally, I think they all should be locked in a room, and fed only bread and water, until they come up with a solution.

Congress: both houses and both sides are getting really good
    at doing nothing.

  5. Dan Casey | November 30, 2012 at 4:32 pm

mikeO, I wrote a very short not at the top of that post and that is all. You can read whatever you want to into it. NOTHING you can dream up in your imagination would surprise me, based on the stuff you’ve posted here in the past.

  6. mike o | November 30, 2012 at 5:30 pm

    Dan,
I assumed you had enough integrity to answer a simple question…

However I will rephrase. “Do you believe”, it is ok for obama to spend taxpayer money and his time, flying around promoting his agenda; but a republican can’t send out a fax seeking support from those who will be punished with new taxes?

If you are just trying to “troll” your own site, I am ok with that…

  7. Suzie | November 30, 2012 at 5:38 pm

0bama’s first proposal: Tax hikes, even more spending. No cuts. Does this sound like someone who is even faintly interested avoiding economic destruction.

He’s taking us down on purpose, people. Is it not obvious, yet?

  8. Dan Casey | November 30, 2012 at 6:04 pm

    mikeO,

In my mind the post has NOTHING to do with the “spending” you’re alleging Republicans are doing in seeking support to hold the line on tax rates. Nor does it have ANYTHING to do with whatever time and money Obama is spending promoting his agenda. Or ay hypocrisy you’re imagining.

And it has EVERYTHING to do with the bad faith exhibited by the GOP, in a game in which they have two choices: Lose little or lose big. They seem to be choosing to lose big, and that will 1) cost them politically in 2014 and 2) may push this country into another recession.

  9. Sandi Saunders | November 30, 2012 at 6:29 pm

Yeah, just like the “economic revival” that happened 10 years ago when you first got those tax cuts you do not want to give up even though no such thing happened.

Sessions trying to get business owners to sign a bogus letter that lies is no surprise to me. This entire “fiscal cliff” nonsense was crafted, at least in part, to go after “entitlements” they could never hope to attack or change any other way!

and absolutely no bathroom breaks – see how quickly issues would get resolved.

  11. mike o | November 30, 2012 at 8:05 pm

    Dan,
I don’t believe “your mind” is the be all end all… There is a truth…

Interesting you bring up the word “hypocrisy”…

If you truly believe this situation to be a “game” what is really the difference in “losing” big or little? Either way one loses….

My opinion is that if we continue to “tax and spend”, allow obama to take us another 5-10 trillion in debt our, “children lose”.

I thought you were happy that obama “won”, he is the “leader of our country” and has been for years… if we have “another” recession will you continue to believe that it is all the fault of “Bush”? (eight years later???).

Are you really are starting to believe all the “conspiracy” theories you are posting?

Take off the tin foil hat and get into the real world…

  12. Dan Casey | November 30, 2012 at 8:07 pm

“Are you really are starting to believe all the “conspiracy” theories you are posting?

    Have fun, mikeO! LOL

Would someone please cut and paste the fax into a post for the HTML5 challenged? Thanks in advance.

  14. Warren | November 30, 2012 at 8:29 pm

As mike o seems to have no problem with the totally dishonest use of ellipsis in quoting the President by the GOTP draft letter, he has no basis to complain about my applying dishonest ellipsis to his posts.

    Thus, mike o posted:

#6: “it is ok for obama to spend taxpayer money and his time, flying around promoting his agenda…I am ok with that”

    #11: “I don’t believe …truth”

And: “my opinion…is the tin foil hat”

  15. Art Hill | November 30, 2012 at 8:30 pm

“…ok for obama to spend taxpayer money…promoting his agenda…”

It’s called the “bully pulpit”, I suggest you look it up.

Art, it’s a pdf. I emailed it to you

  17. Another Chuck | November 30, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Obama and his cast of characters from the Robin Hood novel are the unrealistic ones in terms of solving the fiscal cliff. The GOP has put revenue on the table with the expectation of significant spending cuts being part of the deal. King Obama has proposed no cuts. Therefore, if I was in the leadership of the GOP, I would utilize King Obama’s favortie ploy as a Senator…vote PRESENT. Perhaps this whole dance in DC is part of the negotiation, but if not, I would instruct all Republicans to vote present. The effect would be that Obama would finally own something he could not blame on others.

  18. Sandi Saunders | November 30, 2012 at 9:52 pm

That is NOT what they will “find” Another Chuck. I promise. But go ahead and try to make “Robin Hood” look bad…again. It has worked so well so far, eh?

  19. Kristen | November 30, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Yes, Obama gets to fly around promoting his agenda. It’s called “winning the election”. I hope he beats the GOP like a drum.

  20. Suzie | November 30, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Do you leftwingers really think it’s wise for the country to continue to the mammoth spending spree at a time when we are in such deep debt and have already lost our top credit rating?

  21. Nosaj | November 30, 2012 at 10:32 pm

Mike O and Another Chuck, I believe President Obama is very willing to accept reponsibility for what he has proposed. Despite your protestations to the contrary, he has proposed spending cuts along with new tax revenue, consistent with what he told the country he would do if re-elected.

The last time Republicans arrogantly drew a line in the fiscal sand – 1994 I think – it did not work out so well for the GOP. Dan has explained the rock and hard place that are currently the walls of the GOP house. I wonder if Messrs. McConnell, Boehner, and Cantor have studied the decline of Newt Gingrich’s political career after he spearheaded the GOP government shut down in 1994. Will they accept reponsibility for what becomes of Republican electability if they push the government over the fiscal cliff?

  22. Dan Casey | November 30, 2012 at 10:34 pm

“Do you leftwingers really think it’s wise for the country to continue to the mammoth spending spree at a time when we are in such deep debt and have already lost our top credit rating?”

Not necessarily. That’s the problem with you RWers. The fact is, austerity is more unwise than spending, given the shape we’re in. Note what’s happening in Europe, where austerity is the plan. They’re back in a recession, duh.

What we need is a combination of revenue increase and spending cuts. Everybody know that, and that’s what’s ultimately going to happen. But the RWers want spending cuts that hurt the poor, and tax increases that hurt the poor and the middle class. The sane people want spending cuts, some of which will affect the poor, and tax increases on the wealthy.

  23. Art Hill | November 30, 2012 at 11:06 pm

Sessions doubling-down on the “you didn’t build that” meme? What an idiot.
The president should stick to his guns and drive that car straight over the “cliff” with Boehner in the passenger seat.

  24. Suzie | November 30, 2012 at 11:08 pm

Not necessarily. That’s the problem with you RWers. The fact is, austerity is more unwise than spending, given the shape we’re in. Note what’s happening in Europe, where austerity is the plan. Duh.

It never occurs to liberals that crazy socialist spending like Europe has done, has necessitated “austerity”. Also, to the left, “austerity” is ANY attempt to rein in massive spending.

  25. Suzie | November 30, 2012 at 11:13 pm

What we need is a combination of revenue increase and spending cuts.. Everybody know that.

Isn’t it a hoot? You leftists call for a “balanced approach” AFTER you’ve spent us into oblivion.

No. We need to stop spending. Period. As Paul Ryan and others have shown, you could tax the rich at 100% and it wouldn’t make a dent in the deficit. Spending cuts are far more potent. So the goal of taxing the rich can ONLY be to punish people for being too successful, NOT to make any real difference.

  26. joe | November 30, 2012 at 11:17 pm

The current debate on the tax side is a no brainer..
If you give the 98 percent 2000 dollars a year (my2k)
Most of their finances are such they are very likely
to buy their essentials and durable goods thus contributing
back into the economic engine (Henry Ford) .
Any money gained by a millionaire or individuals making over
250k is likely not going to buying the kids soup and socks
at Walmart. See where the need is…and address it.
Mitt didnt worry about the 47 percent. Myself,I dont have a
lot of welfare concern for the 250k plus individuals . I think they
are gonna be just fine even if they have to back off a country club membership..or the family giving the Lexus to the college kid..and buying a used Ford like the 47 percent.
….Postscript..Judge approved 1.8 million in bonuses for Hostess executives..while 18,000 lose their jobs.
.. As a woman with big framed glasses once said…”And so it goes”
    Thanks Linda…

  27. Suzie | November 30, 2012 at 11:20 pm

But the RWers want spending cuts that hurt the poor,

It’s all the spending that has created more “poor”. This is a favorite trick of the far left: they throw money at ineffective and wasteful government programs, then any attempt to stop it is labeled “hurting the poor”.

and tax increases that hurt the poor and the middle class

This is just a blatant lie. It’s 0bama who wants to raise taxes on EVERYBODY.

and tax increases that hurt the poor and the middle class.

Precisely Dan! This whole spectacle and the reason we are here is in direct response to the TP/R Party and their minions allowing the spending and abuses that created so much debt they now insist the ONLY way to fix it is to hurt the safety nets and Social Security promises they have always hated and wanted to kill. This is their crime of opportunity and no damn way will they achieve that goal either.

  29. Art Hill | December 3, 2012 at 2:14 am

Don’t give in to the Republicans, Mr. President. Let’s go over the cliff! (Skip the ad.)

  30. Kristen | December 3, 2012 at 9:41 am

I’d prefer seeing us go over the cliff to giving one inch to the House Republicans or that nasty little twerp McConnell. Obama needs to squelch his usual consensus-seeking lawyering and tell them to stick it.

  31. Leon | December 3, 2012 at 10:26 am

Reality is that the government receives more revenue when tax rates are cut. In addition, this creates more economic activity which creates jobs.
But this is not part of Obama’s agenda.

Better do a fact check on which group created this horrendous mess. Hint,
what “un”-president has accumulated more debt than all the others before him combined. . .and all without a budget in his entire first term.
