Dan..theres a whole town in Texas dedicated
    to cheap TV.
It used to be called Clark Texas.
Clark was the Mayor..it seems he let his ego get in the way early.
Merritt beat him by one vote in 2005. I guess Merritt liked tv.
He worked a deal..the town would get free TV for 10 years
    and also a free DVR..
Behold, Dish Texas..where now they have settled into bitching about fracking and dubious nosebleeds.

This is not funny. It exemplfies what’s wrong with the Republican Party right now.

Devastating news from the Mayor just a while ago…..Due to funding we would not get rail service in Roanoke till 2018. I find this unacceptable and would personally be willing to pay higher taxes in some form to speed this up. I’ve have crossed this country by train, ridden the Bullet train in Japan and it’s simply archaic that this country is so far behind the times and Roanoke, where to this day we are building rail cars but have no passenger rail service

Within the context of RW crazy, it’s completely understandable that soon-to-be ex-Rep. Allen West would compare himself to Abraham Lincoln.

West did not compare himself to Lincoln. . .strive for more reading comprehension Dan. . .or is it just you blatant liberal bias blinders that make you unable to read?

  8. Kristen | December 3, 2012 at 10:46 am

“And always remember, Abraham Lincoln only served one term in Congress, too.”

What does the ‘too’ refer to, Leon? Himself, I believe. Yes, he was comparing himself – or at least his public service – to that of Lincoln.

Maybe next he’ll accuse the left of crucifying him.

  9. gdad | December 3, 2012 at 10:53 am

#6 Go ahead, Leon, if West wasn’t making q comparison to Lincoln, tell us what you think he meant by this:

“In an interview on NPR about his future plans, West ended by saying, “And always remember, Abraham Lincoln only served one term in Congress, too.”

    We’ll wait.

Something to think about in this piece. Right wingers are going to pour GIGANTIC amounts of cash into the Cooch’s campaign. Rove et al will empty the piggy bank. And Virginia’s Dems aren’t going to be united on a decent candidate any time soon. IF they come up with a decent candidate at all.

    http://www.bluevirginia.us/diary/8260/dont-let-the-cooch-be-a-bellwether

“We in Virginia are no strangers to fringe Republicans aspiring to higher office. But Cuccinell’s Tea Party-backed candidacy couldn’t come at a worse time. That is, when national Republicans are searching for a light at the end of the tunnel – an ideologically pure, “great, really-white hope,” who can revitalize and empower the defeated conservative denizens that took such a beating on Nov. 6.

    An anti-woman, anti-labor, anti-LGBT, anti-science standard-bearer like Ken Cuccinelli.”

“If we allow the Cooch to win, if we allow him to become the national figure he so desires to be and by extension prolongs the life of a hateful, ineffective ideology, we will have contributed to the kind of social and economic regression that we as progressives must never be willing to accept.”

  16. Debbie | December 3, 2012 at 11:51 am

Yes Ron, it does matter. Boehner’s a fool for saying it doesn’t.

The far right are no longer pamphleteers and spit-ballers calling Eisenhower a “Commie” and accusing Kennedy of treason. They’re Republican candidates. In many ways, despite his questionable equanimity, Allen West is a perfect example of a Republican Party that can no longer tell the difference between governing and selling gold and emergency rations on AM radio.

Kristen, saw your post over the weekend. Love the new taphouses and really hope they develop into good rotations of beer. Certainly bringing beer more mainstreem here in Roanoke.

While beer menus were a bit pedestrian for the most part upon openings(think beer section of Cave Spring Kroger on tap), I do like that they featured the great Virginia breweries that are on the up and up. Blue 5 still takes the cake for big experimental beers on tap and switching beers in and out and $8 growler specials, Beamer’s (growlers are ridiculously priced due to not allowing others) does a good job on VA beers and a decent selection, 1906 Ale House is in walking distance for me and is great to have, though Local Roots has better quality but only 8 taps and Wasena Taproom has the best pricing on beers and a decent selection. All in all, it’s fantastic to see it all coming to Virginia like a raging river. Once more the breweries slated to open here get going it’s going to take southwest Virginia by storm, which is great seeing how the beer world is absolutely going off to the north and south of us.

Cuccinelli is just a WASP version of Eric Cantor. That doesn’t mean he can’t cruise to the Governor’s office, it just means he’ll have to stand in line behind Cantor to receive national juice.

@15 gdad, I am more optimistic about voters than I was a month ago. Despite all the money, the Republicans still lost the presidential race (and we still have two Dem. senators).

I think it’s great that the Cooch is going to get an early start. It will give him more time to implode all by himself without any help from the Democrats. He will talk his way out of the job.

I’m curious to know how you’re defining WASP here, seeing as Cuccinelli’s neither Anglo-Saxon nor Protestant.

  31. mike o | December 3, 2012 at 4:17 pm

    Ron,
Did you see the interview with Speaker Boehner? His comments were not about raising revenue from the “middle class” they were about getting funds from changing tax advantages for the top rather than raising the tax rate.
One should be careful when parroting talking points from liberal sources; they are, all too often, taken out of context.

  32. mike o | December 3, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Why are liberals concerned when someone is called a communist? Are these people supposed to be in “hiding”?; obama had no problem putting Van Jones in a cushy taxpayer funded job and he had admitted he was a communist.
If people truly believe in communism or socialism, what is the “fear” in admitting it? Conservatives have no problem with people calling them conservatives.

  33. Dan Casey | December 3, 2012 at 4:25 pm

“Why are liberals concerned when someone is called a communist?”

Because it’s inaccurate, and they care about accuracy.

I would note the “communist” label is thrown at liberals (a moderates) much very frequently by conservatives. You’re much more likely to see that hear than any liberal or moderate calling a conservative a Nazi.

  34. Dan Casey | December 3, 2012 at 4:29 pm

    “Ron,

mikeO, you 1) can’t raise enough revenue by curtailing tax breaks and 2) it’s unfair to people who moved from a joint AGI of $249,999 to $250,000. That one extra dollar earned would cost them thousands of dollars in taxes. It would also depress charitable giving.

  36. mike o | December 3, 2012 at 5:02 pm

    Dan,
Are you suggesting that Van Jones never said he was a communist?
Also re: “… liberal or moderate calling a conservative a Nazi.”
Well I should expect not as the name Nazi was derived from the term “National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party”, which has nothing to do with conservatism beliefs.

Finally, on the “tax” issue: first; obama’s proposals (if enacted) would only raise enough money to run the government for a week. Second; if the scale is correct it could work without hurting the $1.00 people (although I am not sure why you might be concerned about those rich 250k folks, maybe they could make the changes at 1 million so it would not affect you). Finally; if this was “really” about caring for the “middle class”, where has the “concern” been as cost of groceries have been rising double didgets, cost of gas doubling, etc…?

Personally, I have no problem with “rates” going back to 2006 as long as “spending” can go back to those levels. If we have a deal we should call Washington; I am sure one side would be happy to hear the news…lol

  37. Kristen | December 3, 2012 at 5:12 pm

No kidding Laura… An Italian catholic doesn’t make much of a WASP.

  38. Ron May | December 3, 2012 at 5:20 pm

    mikeo,

Below is the link to the Fox News interview. I watched it all. There are 3 minutes starting around the 6 minute mark that outline what Boehner said & refused to say about raising revenues. It’s clear that his math doesn’t add up & he knows it doesn’t. Following the Republican approach will have a greater impact on the middle class that on those earning more than $250K. I’ve discussed with my accountant and my family income puts me above that threshold. I am willing to pay my share to get our country headed back to where it needs to go. Boehner, his Republican House & Senate colleagues and Grover Norquist are not. We currently have the lowest tax burden in this country that we’ve had since World War II. For us to be serious about not leaving our children & grandchildren a bankrupt country we have to have more revenues and lower our spending. I have several ideas for doing that, but Rep. Boehner, Sen. McConnell, Pres. Obama are not asking me. I’m not surprised.

“Are you suggesting that Van Jones never said he was a communist?
Also re: “… liberal or moderate calling a conservative a Nazi.”
Well I should expect not as the name Nazi was derived from the term “National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party”, which has nothing to do with conservatism beliefs.

    mikeO,

Nope. Not suggesting that at all. Note: he said he HAD BEEN a communist. That was before Obama hired him. Big deal. People change. Jones did, too. That he had jettisoned that philosophy out to make you feel BETTER about him, IMHO.

With regard to your spin on what Nazis were, that has been going around for a few years. I think Rush started it, because Suzie is always spouting it here. It was invented by the right wing in an attempt to shrug off the comparison between Nazis and conservatives. Please do some reading about World War II (I suggest The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William S. Shirer, a truly great book).

Among other things, you will learn that Hitler was a master of the big lie, and that he would never allow a dictionary to define his odious party because of one (of four) words in the party name. (I’m being serious about this).

But mikeO, whatever you do, DO NOT read that book unless you’re willing to have your cherished belief that NAZI = socialist blown out of the water. Because that book will do that big time.

You might want to cover your eyes for the rest of this: Among other things you’ll learn from it is that Hitler conspired with German industrialists against the working man, that he outlawed all unions except for Nazi ones that were safely under control of the party and the corporations, and that the Nazi party was floated by American industrialists who feared actual socialism.

  40. Sandi Saunders | December 3, 2012 at 7:05 pm

No Dan, you are wrong. I believe Mike O could easily read that book and still not lose his “cherished belief that NAZI = socialist”.

Boehner literally said “Listen, what is the difference where the money comes from?” while admitting that is NOT an increase in the higher tax rates, and Mike O insists he is not taking more from the middle class, even as his proposals will absolutely do so. He doesn’t even argue that the White House has not already given over a trillion dollars in cuts without ANY new revenue. He also refuses to give specifics about what he WILL cut. He is still pushing the failed and rejected Ryan Budget. He refuses to say what he will do and yet still has the gall to demand to know what the President will do.

Mike O has all the information he requires, which is apparently not very much.

BTW, Mike O, if I was a Communist, I would say so. If I was a Socialist, I would say so. In your opinion, was Thomas Jefferson a socialist? Was George Washington? Was Theodore Roosevelt? Was Abraham Lincoln? Was Eisenhower? Was Ronald Reagan? I think you should admit that you do not know what you are talking about.

War on Christmas…what war on Christmas?

A Catholic priest is counseling hosts of Fox & Friends to chill out and enjoy the holiday season instead of being “so angry about this war on Christmas” that their network has been hyping.

Morris added that fighting a “very small percentage of people who are working to try to get rid of these public expressions” was not worth “losing the peace.”

“If our Christmas is going to be all about getting upset at people who are to trying do away our Christmas, isn’t that silly, too?” he asked the [FOX] hosts.

  43. Frank | December 3, 2012 at 8:10 pm

…this is regarding earlier post by dano concerning Doug Johnson, …and I hope Doug Johnson exceeds the estimates for recovery made by his health care providers.

I’d like to call attention to a comment ol’ dano raised in his column about Mr. Johnson. In that column, ol’ dano mentioned in reference to Mr. Johnson, “when he learned the paper would pick up the tab, he grinned and proceeded to order a big steak, the most expensive item on the menu”.

Now, I’m not sure what value THAT little tidbit contributes to ol’ dano’s column on Doug Johnson, but, …I guess he thinks it makes Doug Johnson appear “larger than life”, or something or other. Frankly, I don’t think I know anyone who would deliberately order “the most expensive thing on ANY menue, once they know that someone else will pick up the tab”. Then again, if I did encounter such behavior by someone that I knew, I can’t imagine putting THAT information in the public forum. But, since he’s an “opinion” journalist, maybe ol’ dano was just expressing his personal opinion about Doug Johnson, albeit unconventionally. And, perhaps Doug Johnson is proud of that aspect of his personal behavior. Don’t know.

Sooo, whydja put that tidbit in your column on Doug Johnson, eh, dano?

So says the poster who just last week voiced no disapproval at all when a post-election Republican fundraising letter still used a dishonestly out of context quote by the President. Even when called on it, mike o let it pass uncriticized.

So again we are equally justified in applying dishonest ellipsis to mike o’s posts, pretending that #31 reads as follows:

“…Speaker Boehner? His comments were…about raising revenue from the top…raising the tax rate.”

    Auto-correct suggests:

32.Why are Fox viewers concerned when someone is called a regressive? Are these people supposed to be in “hiding”?; Bush had no problem giving a gay prostitue a White House press pass to be a safety valve at press briefings by pretending to be a journalist, and he had admitted he was a gay prostitute.

Frank seems somehow offended that because the paper is willing to buy lunch for a possible story subject or future source, the guy decides to eat something good instead of getting a burger. Or offended that Dan would tell that story. Frank, are you equally offended when businesspeople do the exact same thing whether it’s their company or another that’s paying?

Or are you just being a troll boy, Frankie?

I know Buffett “changed” when he espoused “higher taxes on the rich (like him)” (as he currently is in litigation fighting his company’s tax burden).

I have limited time and usually look; first for Dan (out of respect) second for logical posts; and lastly for silly, ignorant and irrelevant posts; although I do make some exceptions, you have not moved into the upper tier of these (keep working); and some days time does not permit any visit at all (though I surely miss it).
However, I will indulge you with this regarding “progressive” vs “regressive”.
Q: why did “liberals” change their name to “progressive”?
Q: if “progressives” want to move “forward” why do they continue to want to “go back” to historical “outdated” tax structures?
Q: why do “progressives” believe a country/government/society can survive on concepts that have historically proven unsustainable?

About this blog

Metro Columnist Dan Casey knows a little bit about a lot of things but not a heck of a lot about most things. That doesn't keep him from writing about them, however. So keep him honest!

He welcomes your rants, raves and considered opinions, so long as the language is civil (i.e. no four-letter words). He'll read all your posts and may or may not respond.
