Merry Christmas on the Saturday OPEN thread
“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!”
Charles Dickens
Merry Christmas, everyone! Zach and I will be lunching with friends at Angelos in Vinton around noon. Drop by if you’re hungry but have cash and be prepared for a wait, because, as Angel Linares says, he cooks slow (and delicious) Mexican food, and anyone who wants fast food can “go straight to Taco Hell!”

Dan, you think I could eat gluten free there?
“Dan, you think I could eat gluten free there?”
gdad, absolutely. He uses soft corn tortillas (don’t know if there is wheat flour in them, but you could examine the package. Or there are options to steer clear of any bread/grain products.
Sounds good. I figured it would be corn, but thought I’d ask.
Corn tortillas are so much better than the wheat ones are. They have much more flavor.
Are they willfully ignorant, or in complete denial?

Here now. The joint is rockin.
I’ve only been there once but it is the best Mexican food in the valley, hands down.
Well folks I have found access to the internet after a long day of travel. Nice dinner with several members of my wife’s family and now time for some relaxation. Glass of wine at hand and keyboard in front of me. Looking forward to the next few days with family and friends. Headed to Lake George after Christmas for a few days. Take care folks.

Wishing you and yours an outstanding Christmas. There is no time more valuable than family time.
A colleague and I stopped at Angelo’s for dinner earlier this year. We loved the food! Angelo asked us what kind of sauce we wanted on our dinners and gave us three choices. Can’t remember how he described the two hottest sauces, but he offered us the “seniorita” sauce if we didn’t think we could handle the others. I promptly pulled out my man card and opted for the middle of the road sauce, as did my friend. The meal was excellent, but the next time we dined with Angelo, we quickly and definitively ordered the “seniorita” sauce!
Jason Perdue aka Nosaj,
I highly recommend the steak tacos ($12), which is my favorite Angelo’s dish. I’ve had both the middle sauce, which is very good, and the hot stuff.
Angelo also makes the best hamburger, BY FAR, in at least a 200-mile radius of Roanoke. Zach ordered one today, with bacon and cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. The burger itself was 1.5 inches thick and probably 5 inches in diameter, cooked. The entire sandwich was 7-8 inches tall. The beef Angelo uses, chopped by hand, from a secret source NoVa, is out of this world. $5.50, w/ fried potatoes. Unreal.

There is something wrong with this family. What adult DOES this??
“Tagg Romney said his father “wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life,” according to the Boston Globe.
“He had no desire,” the eldest Romney son said. “If he could have found someone else to take his place … he would have been ecstatic to step aside.”
Yo Biff…your dad got his butt kicked from here till next week. Embrace it. Clearly he wanted it badly enough that he refused to concede when his loss became clear. You probably need to close your piehole.
And…just for JohnW….

“The petition, which has been submitted on a White House website, has received over 12,000 signatures. (It takes 25,000 before the White House is obligated to address the petition.) The petition was launched by writer Kurt Nimmo. The text reads:
British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.”
From WDBJ, who just needs to give up written mediums because their editing is a train wreck.
“We spoke with Gary Full, a vendor at the event, who lives in Ohio. “ We wanted freedom–it is in our constitution– it’s 2nd amendment. And I do think it is the right of the American people to keep and bare arms–whether it’s for protection, pleasure, hunting, sports,” he said.”
Bare arms indeed. WTH?
Re: the petition to deport Piers Morgan (just because he let Phil Van Cleave praise a child slaughter weapon as fun to a wider audience than Van Cleave’s usual VCDL groupies), this is the mindset that gave us the Tiahrt amendment, which not one of the VCDL on here has ever acknowledged as an impediment to honest debate. Not One.
Here’s a great list of ways to be a better commenter on a blog, from Whaterver’s John Scalzi.
The highlights:
1. Do I actually have anything to say?
2. Is what I have to say actually on topic?
3. Soes what I write actually STAY on topic?
4. If I’m making an argument, do I actually know how to make an argument?
5. If I’m making assertions, can what I say be backed up by actual fact? (This is probably the most important one. Well, along with the next.)
6. If I’m refuting an assertion made by others, can what I say be backed up by fact?
7. Am I approaching this subject like a thoughtful human being, or a particularly stupid fan?
8. An I being an asshole to others?
9. Do I want to have a conversation or do I want to win the thread?
10. Do I know when I’m done?
So much for freedom of speech.

Dan, my oldest son and I had breakfast at Angelo’s this morning, and we both had the steak tacos. Very, very good. Thanks for the suggestion.

Piers never lets anyone who disagrees with him get a word in. He is worse than Bill O’Reilly. He rudely interrupts anyone with an opposing viewpoint and doesn’t allow his guests’ free speech. Rights are a two-way street.
Warren dragging the same topic from thread to thread:
“the Tiahrt amendment, which not one of the VCDL on here has ever acknowledged as an impediment to honest debate. Not One.”
Because it doesn’t.
I know you like a world full of limitless big brother and regulation, but you take for granted how free you are becuase of the people who have fought that.

If enforced, his number 8 would rid us of #15.
Merry Christmas everybody!
John Wilburn, being rude is a bad personal trait, especially for a TV host, but it’s not a deportable offense.
Dan rad ached
I just read John Scalzi’s “Redshirts”. It’s funny. Weird but funny.
Debbie, I never suggested he should be deported and think that makes those who engage in the petition look stupid, which they likely are. I just find it ironic that he is rightfully using a First Amendment defense, while denying any person with an opposing viewpoint to get so much as a word in.
I agree John W, it does make those who engage in the petition look stupid. In TV land you vote with your remote control. If his ratings go low enough, he’ll be gone. His attitude may keep some people from appearing as guests on the show, but for others the lure of getting air time is strong enough that they’ll still be there.
