Bedtime in Coochville: A nightmare for Virginia

Saturday Column Reprise

Note from Dan: While I’m on vacation, I’m treating you to some oldie-but-goodie columns from the past. More-fanciful-than-usual, this one originally appeared March 29, and was inspired by an a event at Wasena Elementary School March 2 (Dr. Suess’ birthday) at which I read the famous author’s work to three classes. That was well before Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli had secured the GOP nomination for governor (it’s all his, now). Thus, the prospect of a nightmare has drawn even closer.

Night is falling on the household of Ken Cuccinelli. Let’s call it bedtime in Coochville, where there’s a bunch of young’uns.

As usual, the Virginia attorney general and his wife split up the chore of getting the kids settled into their slumbers. For Ken, it’s story night for three pipsqueaks.

Let us imagine some of those scenes.

The attorney general enters his son’s room, and picks up a copy of Dr. Seuss’ “Horton Hatches The Egg.” He turns to the page he’d stopped reading from the night before.

“Very well,” said the elephant, “since you insist

You want a vacation. Go fly off and take it.

I’ll sit on your egg and I’ll try not to break it.

I’ll stay and be faithful. I mean what I say.”

“Toodle-oo!” sang out Mayzie and fluttered away.

There’s a pause, and the little boy says, “read the next page, Daddy.”

“Sure,” Ken says.

“It’s like taking the pill,” the free bird laughed out loud

“No egg will bind me in a nest stuck in branch!

“I’ll do what I want, I might buy a ranch.”

But that made God mad, so Mayzie flew at her peril,

And when she hit ground God made her quite sterile.

The little boy seems confused.

“Daddy,” he says, “why does mommy read it different?”

    Well, that didn’t last long

We should do our best to avoid schoolboy-style name calling, both toward each other (example: “troll” or “grandad”) and public figures we’re discussing (examples: Obuma, Rmoney). That kind of stuff doesn’t strengthen debate; it childishly demeans it.

Aww, Henry. You think Cooch’s feelings were hurt?

  3. Cold n P | December 23, 2012 at 12:52 am

Nobody Cares what Cooch does, thinks, or has plans for in the future, cause his run for Gov will be a joke, just like Cooch.

Yeah, Henry. So far we’ve learned AFTER the Civility Summit, that I must use obama’s correct name and those of the blog’s posters. But they aren’t required to use my correct name or those of public figures.

The goal was to silence conservatives only. That’s always the leftwing (Communist) goal. When they scream ‘civility’, they don’t mean it for themselves.

Ho ho ho! The PROOF of this is that I’ve censored her post (NOT!).

OTOH, ultra-fake-sensitivity is characteristic of a mind that’s been warped by unreasonable dogma. And that may be what’s going on here.

Ho ho ho! The PROOF of this is that I’ve censored her post (NOT!).

You said you wouldn’t allow me to use obama’s name with a zero character and would trash any comment in which I did. You also said we must use other posters’ correct names. Now you allow me to address me with other names.

This is proof these rules were made for Suzie only.

  7. Suzie | December 23, 2012 at 7:10 pm

Now you allow others to address me with other names is how post #6 should read.

Here’s the newest Romney excuse. Running twice, spending 1.5 billion to do it, completely reversing every position you previously held to get the nomination, and running a campaign rife with lies and distortions is clear evidence that he “really didn’t want to run in the first place”.
What kind of ego does it take to run just because you believe that the :country needs you” and only you can save it.?

“This is proof these rules were made for Suzie only.”

And that’s why Dan has deleted posts by people other than suzie under the rules.

Man, you are SOOOOO easy. But your whining is hysterical.

  10. Frank | December 24, 2012 at 11:21 am

    In my opinion,

…opinion journalist rules are designed to foment the opinion journalist’s bias….as evidenced by dan’s December 7 post titled “Toward a More Civil Discourse”.

Cooch, Obuma, Coochville, Obumaville, what difference does it make? Both are plays on names from folks who make no attempt to hide their bias when posting.

Yet, only “obuma” was established by dan to be considered “the kind of stuff” which apparantly “doesn’t strengthen the debate; it childishly demeans it.”

So, there you have it. Lib opinion journalist establishes biased lib rules which translate to… rules only non-libs need follow. Sheesh.

Yes, it’s your blog, dan, and you make the rules. I promise to follow your example.

And to all in Obumaville and Coochville, may the Spirits of Christmas and this Holiday Season stay with you and yours all through the year.

  11. Suzie | December 27, 2012 at 10:39 am

If Dan is to apply the rule consistently, “Cooch” wouldn’t be allowed anymore. Let’s see if it happens.

  12. gdad | December 27, 2012 at 10:45 am

    Cooch.

  13. Sandi Saunders | December 27, 2012 at 10:52 am

What difference indeed. You all show your colors whether allowed to insult with childish name calling or childish name changing or not. The column is a “reprise”, otherwise known as a rerun, but thanks for chiming in with your daily whine, we would sure hate to miss it.

Metro Columnist Dan Casey knows a little bit about a lot of things but not a heck of a lot about most things. That doesn't keep him from writing about them, however. So keep him honest!

He welcomes your rants, raves and considered opinions, so long as the language is civil (i.e. no four-letter words). He'll read all your posts and may or may not respond.
