Don’t dis his savior on the Saturday OPEN thread

Courtesy of Scott M.

This was the sign on the ground below the atheists’ billboard in Salem when we met there on Wednesday.

Note to all potential objectors: This is the noncriminal and nondestructive way to protest a billboard that has a message you don’t agree with.

Conservative think tank, now led by former Sen. Jim Demint, ranks countries with government-run health care as the “freest in the world.”

Ooops! I predict a quick scrub!

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

I don’t believe in Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Pedro Negro, the Easter Bunny, chocolate cows or Elton John, either. Does that mean I’m dissing them, too?

And technically it is criminal to do that. Unless he/she received express permission to leave that there, they’re littering.

I feel like I have a bad attitude lately. Is it just me? I’ll blame on quitting smoking if I do.

  5. dobbs | January 12, 2013 at 11:27 am

Wasn’t there another billboard adjacent to the atheist one? Why doesn’t someone rent that space to put up a pro-religion message? I’ve seen plenty of them. Sends a better message than vandalism does.

  6. Joe C. | January 12, 2013 at 3:29 pm

A group photo was taken of about 30 or so secular humanists and atheists in front of the billboard, no one in attendance defaced the “Don’t Dis my Savior” sign. Instead it was actually picked off the ground and stood up by someone in attendance. While I know passions run deep on this topic and this can lead to rash behaviors, I am glad reason and respect prevailed-if even for that brief moment.

Nope, you’re not alone. It’s this blog, it brings out the snarky side of people.

No worries J.M. White, given the high bar of low set long ago, you are in no danger. I blame my short fuse on menopause and if anyone thinks doing it not medicated is easy, I have a bridge to sell them… to jump off of of course.

    :)

At least it was a small pan, Ron. I wonder if he insulted her cooking?

  11. Scott M. | January 12, 2013 at 6:11 pm

@6 Joe C., I heard the sign you mention being picked up was picked up by the guy who actually made the DON’T DIS MY SAVIOR SIGN. Apparently he lives nearby and was offended by the atheist billboard so thought a counter-sign would be helpful. He was later interviewed by channel 7 so you might actually get to see him.

This is all second hand so I could be wrong about it all.

  12. Joe C. | January 12, 2013 at 6:29 pm

@ Scott M. I didn’t recognize the guy. Apparently he and his sister live across the street. According to the channel 7 article the quote from them is “They’re still sweet people, but it’s just when it comes to religion we do have a divider. Community, I understand that, but as Christians, we are a part of the community,” said Seth and Destiny.

Heck of a game going on in Denver. Tied at 28. Temperature is 10°, wind chill makes it -2°. Brrrrrr!!!!

  15. dobbs | January 12, 2013 at 7:23 pm

So, Denver fans don’t require a domed stadium, nor does Green Bay. But Atlanta and New Orleans fans do?

It is all about getting fans in the stands.

No need to spend more money than deeded to fill the stands.

    SMALL WORLD DEPARTMENT

So on Saturday afternoon Steve C and I went for 25-mile bicycle ride. It was great. We both need the miles. And during the ride I said, “Hey, we’re grilling tonight. Come on over for dinner.” So he does.

During dinner, Steve mentioned that his (late) mom had worked at a very well-known church nursery school in SW Roanoke. It just so happens that my wife Donna worked at that same nursery school when our kids were young.

And then Steve noted that his mom’s name was Liz. OMG. Donna worked right alongside Liz. Liz, before she died, had been over to our house on more than one occasion. Donna loved her like a mother. She was kind of like a grandmother to 3 of our 4 kids. She was a true lady of the highest order.

“Your mom is Liz!?” Donna cried.

    “Yep,” Steve said.

He’s been over here before. None of us had ever made the connection.

Whereupon Donna gave Steve a big hug. “Oh my God I loved your mom.”

And much reminiscing commenced. The wine flowed.

  21. Steve C | January 12, 2013 at 11:14 pm

Damn, man, you’re getting me all teary eyed now.

Mrs. Liz was an incredible woman. Not sure I could ever accomplish enough in my life to honor this woman’s inner strength but I’m doing my best. She truly made the world a better place.

If I could ever be a quarter of the person my Mom was I’d be successful beyond my wildest dreams.

hey Dan and Mon, oops, Steve c,

    Good story!

Roanoke’s a small enough place that, if for know other reason, we should always treat each other with dignity and respect, ’cause you just never know…

    Good story!

What a cool story Dan and Steve C! It is indeed a “small world” sometimes and cool when we notice.

Steve C, you are doing fine with honoring your mom, I promise!

Time to share my favorite lines from “The Grapes of Wrath”. “I’ll be all around in the dark. I’ll be everywhere. Wherever you can look, wherever there’s a fight, so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad. I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry and they know supper’s ready, and when the people are eatin’ the stuff they raise and livin’ in the houses they build, I’ll be there, too.” Anyone who ever taught you anything or gave you a model to live by will always be with you and shine through you.
