What a cool story Dan and Steve C! It is indeed a "small world" sometimes and cool when we notice.

Steve C, you are doing fine with honoring your mom, I promise!

Time to share my favorite lines from "The Grapes of Wrath". "<em>I'll be all around in the dark. I'll be everywhere. Wherever you can look, wherever there's a fight, so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad. I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready, and when the people are eatin' the stuff they raise and livin' in the houses they build, I'll be there, too.</em>" Anyone who ever taught you anything or gave you a model to live by will always be with you and shine through you.

Damn, man, you’re getting me all teary eyed now.

Mrs. Liz was an incredible woman. Not sure I could ever accomplish enough in my life to honor this woman’s inner strength but I’m doing my best. She truly made the world a better place.

If I could ever be a quarter of the person my Mom was I’d be successful beyond my wildest dreams.

SMALL WORLD DEPARTMENT

So on Saturday afternoon Steve C and I went for 25-mile bicycle ride. It was great. We both need the miles. And during the ride I said, "Hey, we're grilling tonight. Come on over for dinner." So he does.

During dinner, Steve mentioned that his (late) mom had worked at a very well-known church nursery school in SW Roanoke. It just so happens that my wife Donna worked at that same nursery school when our kids were young.

And then Steve noted that his mom's name was Liz. OMG. Donna worked right alongside Liz. Liz, before she died, had been over to our house on more than one occasion. Donna loved her like a mother. She was kind of like a grandmother to 3 of our 4 kids. She was a true lady of the highest order.

"Your mom is Liz!?" Donna cried.

"Yep," Steve said.

He's been over here before. None of us had ever made the connection.

Whereupon Donna gave Steve a big hug. "Oh my God I loved your mom."

And much reminiscing commenced. The wine flowed.
