‘Gov. McDonnell is lying to the citizens of Virginia’

Your daily Letter to the Columnist — Jan. 21, 2013

Via snail mail

Dear Mr. Casey,

I would like to commend you on the article you wrote about Morgan Griffith. I believe Mr. Griffith should do the people of Virginia a favor and go back to the cave where he studied BATS and make that his permanent residence.

It would not bother me if he took [Dels.] Chris Head and Greg Habeeb with him.

I would like to see you write an article about the way Gov. McDonnell is lying to the citizens of Virginia SAYING FOR THREE YEARS HE HAS GENERATED A BUDGET SURPLUS. He has not paid for obligations he was supposed to fund — the public school system, the Department of Transportation and the state pension system to name a few.

I would like to wish you a Happy New Year. Please keep up your good work.

Sincerely,

R.G. Garrett Jr
ROANOKE

So the public schools have no money? How did teachers get paid last month? How did DOT employees get paid if there was no funding?

It’s not a well thought out argument.

  2. don | January 22, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Great point Henry. Just about every day I see roads being worked on, yet they say they have no money for roads.

  3. Sandi Saunders | January 22, 2013 at 3:54 pm

I agree Henry, everyone should just shut up about the nation’s financial problems. The schools have money and teachers and government workers are still being paid so all is right with the world. You do know your way around a cogent argument.

  4. applewood | January 22, 2013 at 4:32 pm

Government workers will always get paid until the size and scope of it decreases.

I wonder what the writer meant to say. My first thought was that Casey printed the letter to embarrass the writer.

The root of your problem is in the the first three words the sentence, Henry.

    Original post:

“It would not bother me if he took [Dels.] Chris Head and Greg Habeeb with him.”

I would like to take this opportunity to again thank Congressman Griffith and Delegates Head and Habeeb for their voting records which were 100% pro gun rights.

  8. Sandi Saunders | January 22, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Oh? And then they will work for free applewood?

Henry, you are apparently pushing your limits.

  9. gdad | January 22, 2013 at 6:03 pm

Ah, poor Henry, don, and Applewood. All three have either a total inability to comprehend, are woefully uninformed, or are just so biased to the right that they can’t force themselves to admit the truth. Henry, bud, NOWHERE did the writer say there were NO funds. Stop making stuff up.

McDonnell did indeed “balance” the budget by not paying pension fund obligations. Note that Henry doesn’t even attempt to refute that one. As for transportation, EVERYBODY knows and acknowledges that maintenance is WAY, WAY behind and what maintenance they are doing is being funded in part by stealing from funds that should be used for new construction. So new construction is also WAY, WAY behind. As for the work don sees going on, part of that is due to federal stimulus dollars, so I’m glad to hear don appreciates that.

Education? The state isn’t coming close to funding the percentage of education it promised years ago and it keeps pushing that off on localities. Meanwhile, state workers of all kinds haven’t had a raise in 5 years, which means that many of the top employees have fled the system.

So, Henry, don and addledwood, R.G. Garrett is absolutely right — or a heck of lot closer to right than any of you.

  10. Chuck | January 22, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Yes gdad, he did. Just like Kaine did before him.

  11. Henry | January 22, 2013 at 7:50 pm

    gdad

Please prove that McDonnell paid nothing toward pensions, transportation or schools. We’ll wait patiently while you do so.

I’ve noticed that liberals seem to have no concept of truth. That’s why they still believe that Clinton did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.

  12. Eddie | January 22, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Liberals can’t comprehend when you don’t have money, you don’t spend money. They have to move on to step 2A: squeeze more out of the “rich” or step 2B: borrow from China. It’s not in their DNA to stop at step one therefore the lack of comprehension on this topic.

  13. Sandi Saunders | January 23, 2013 at 8:19 am

Did McDonnell stop spending Eddie? When? OR are you saying McDonnell is a liberal?

  14. gdad | January 23, 2013 at 9:06 am

Henry, please show us where anybody other than you said anything about McD paying nothing toward these things. Once you fail to do that, you can vow to stop making up stuff.

  15. applewood | January 23, 2013 at 9:38 am

Depends on what you consider the defintion of `is`, is. Desparate Deomcrats.

  16. applewood | January 23, 2013 at 9:41 am

#9…What you have stated, Gdad, are all out-and-out lies, and you know it. You seem unable to come up with a truism to save your life. What, do you just sit there and make these things up for the fun of it ? I believe you do. What a pathetic existence.

  17. gdad | January 23, 2013 at 10:48 am

applewod, you simply declcaring it a lie doesn’t make it so. Please go step by step through my post and provide evidence for any lies.

Oops, can’t do it, can you? Which makes YOU the liar. Join the Henry club.

  18. Pirengle | January 23, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Henry: So the public schools have no money? How did teachers get paid last month? How did DOT employees get paid if there was no funding?

The government fiscal year often runs June-July, which means pay is guaranteed until a set date. (Many federal agencies coast or freeze entirely in the spring, unwilling to make plans until the next year’s budget solidifies. If you lived in NOVA, this would seem as natural as the four seasons.) Depending on the locality, budget plans run at least one year and more often two or three years ahead of schedule, based on tax revenue projections and other sources of funding. (For example, a city or county has next year’s expenditures outlined and contingencies planned out based on expected fund allocation from the state and the federal governments. A smart city or county has a five-year plan in place.)

So the question isn’t how teachers get paid this month, but how many teachers get paid next fiscal year, how many skilled teachers a locality retain, and how many teachers will need replacing through churn. Also, VDOT contracts out. [http://www.virginiadot.org/business/rfp-shortlist.asp] When you hear about X dollars allotted to a transportation project, a fair bit of that goes to private companies contracted to do the work.

  19. gdad | January 24, 2013 at 9:38 am

Henry, buddy, I’m still waiting for you to show where anybody other than you suggested that McD was paying NOTHING to pensions, transportation or schools. Or are you admitting by your silence that you just made that up out of thin air?

  20. gdad | January 24, 2013 at 9:40 am

applewood, still waiting on exact details where I lied. Please disprove even one thing I said.

    Crickets.
