    Greetings all,

i just spent the morning at an introductory seminar dealing with the implementation of the affordable care act. there were approximately 100 folks in attendance, with about 80% HR / 20% owner/management staff. all i can say is, this next year is going to get very interesting.

HR departments currently are hamstrong because they don’t know yet what they need to do, and the myriad of options for business owners are fraught with some very bad financial penalties. they’re gonna have to get it right, the first time.

in my opinion, companies, large and small, and all workers, are going to be facing significant adjustments, the cost will sky-rocket over the next 18 months, and the employee incentives and employer penalties appear to be such that there will remain a large number of young, single, low-wage earners who will find it easier to pay the tax penalty once per year than purchase a monthly premium policy…and employers will be incentivized to not hire and/or reduce full-timers in favor of part-timers. Hospitals will continue to see large volumns of uninsured.

draconian doesn’t begin to describe it…

my advise: learn all you can, as soon as you can. hold on tight, keep your eyes wide open.

  14. mike o | January 10, 2013 at 5:33 pm

    Frank,
You are correct, I have attended multiple seminars on the ACA, each as frustrating as the last.
Regulators posting regulations only to find them unworkable and then returning 20 page “explanations” on a single regulatory paragraph. It is truly a “nightmare”; and all this even before the first real regulatory lawsuit happens.

A 3k page law and God knows how many pages of regulations can only be a lawyer’s dream.
Heck, litigation on minor points may tie up the judicial system for decades. All the while businesses might hang in limbo.

My guess is that many businesses will take the “path of least resistance” and drop their coverage; erring on the side of financial caution. Thereby making a “federal” healthcare system, the reality that was sought, by liberals, from the start.

Sadly this will prove detrimental to many employees who will be left with only a fraction of the benefits they once had, and will be waiting weeks or more to get appointments with whatever doctors are left in the “system” (as most good doc’s will move to concierge arrangements).

Gotta love laws and regulations foisted upon us by people who have no clue of the real world.

Remember the adage; “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”?

Sometimes “no thanks” is the correct answer.

  15. Frank | January 10, 2013 at 7:19 pm

    hey mike o,

your opinion fits with the way the attendees at today’s seminar felt. during the several breaks, and question/answer sessions, i felt bewilderment and fear thoughout the crowd. and, this wasn’t political. these folks where there specifically to figure out how to protect their work-forces, maintain viable businesses, take care of their families, and comply with the law. during and after, i have never seen such a depressed group of apolitical folks in my life.

i suggest, just for yucks, that all libs who read this, please go to your HR director, and ask them “how are things going with their companies’ compliance with the aca law…., and when will they know the impact on the employees. maybe ol’ dano should ask his posse to “take pictures of the glazed looks on the faces of the HR folks as they are asked those questions! sure, i know that can’t happen, but boy would those pics tell a story.

  16. Frank | January 10, 2013 at 7:23 pm

    and,

American Express just announced layoffs of 8.5% of its’ employees, after posting a profit of $637 million, which was below analysts’ expectations. do ya think maybe American Express is preparing for the absorbtion of the cost of compliance with the ACA?

    …and, the beat goes on…

hey, get some enthusiam going for what’s to come! be a cheer-leader! c’mon, it’s what you folks want, isn’t it? so, go for it! …tell us how good it’s gonna be!

  20. Sandi Saunders | January 10, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Mike O, I am not sure what nirvana you believe workers have been living in for the past ten years but health insurance has become almost totally unaffordable for truly small businesses -50 or less employees, and very hard to afford for those 50-100. If you are not a “group” of hundreds or thousands, the rates and plans are geared to the benefit of the insurer and it has gotten steadily worse. I am praying that the health exchanges will offer some coverage that workers can afford.

Companies that offer health insurance face a yearly dread of the changes and increases they will face at renewal. Workers not in salaried, manager positions often cannot afford the coverage even when offered. Employees with a wife and child or children will not take coverage only on themselves and cannot afford to pay for the family coverage.

NONE of that has anything to do with the ACA or the changes they are making. The seminars, put on by health insurance carriers (not an unbiased bunch) are confusing because they have delayed learning about the ACA until they had to after the SC decision. They are as uninformed as those they are trying to help, which you find out when you ask a question.

I did not expect the insurance carrier to take any blame nor the agent to admit anything either but if this system was not so seriously and completely broken that health care costs have soared, small businesses have been dropping insurance or limping along with 50% premium assistance for years, this ACA might not have happened. Put at least a little blame where it is due. We had to contend with a 34% increase in 2006 that had nothing to do with Obama.

I hope that in the long run this will work, too many people do not have coverage or any hope of getting it until those exchanges are running.

  21. Ron May | January 10, 2013 at 7:51 pm

    Frank,

Did they tell you about the ACA provision bought & paid for by the NRA which prohibits physicians from asking patients about their use of firearms?

The ACA is what it is because the special interests spent between 3 & 4 billion dollars to get it that way.

The fact that Virginia, under the guidance of your governor, is not creating a statewide insurance exchange is adding to the challenges to be confronted by employers & employees.

  22. Frank | January 10, 2013 at 9:31 pm

    ron,

no, the NRA didn’t come up. quite frankly, that’s a pretty uncomfortable aspect of big brother encroachment, doncha think? ya really think some looney person is gonna be happy to discuss his “interest in guns” with some doc he/she never sees in the first place? sheesh.

and, while the lack of a state-sponsered exchange certainly did come up, the absence of such exchange isn’t the problem folks in Virginia face that’s gonna be reduced hours, less full-time jobs, and higher premium cost. i suspect many business will simply pay the penalty, send their employees to the exchanges, and single-payor here we come. at that time, we’ll really see what happens to cost.

perhaps Alegany(sp?) Community College’s actions (large community college in the Pittsburgh, PA area) will be more enlightening to the folks who want to see what will befall even non-dastardly businesses…

Your son got his Masters from a girl’s school.

    hey there, dano,

…actually, i’d say you would probably be a better representative for such an award than ol’ bill. only a star-sruck lib group would award ol’ bill THIS type of award. the fact that they did, and he accepted, well, i think that points to the divide we have in this country.

in my book, bill’s betrayal of his family and lying to the American people, and taking advantage of a your girl (what was she, dano, maybe a couple years older than your daughter?) in the oval office…national scandal…?

yep, father of the year he is. and i can hear you and your lib-posse applauding.

yep, the committee must have said amongst themselves, “you know, we haven’t given the award to a true, known, real life, scum-bag before. by golly, it’s time to show how inclusive we are, and what better true, known, real-life, scum-bag can we think of, other than bill clinton?”

This is clearly going to be the new Republican strategy to protect the incomes of the wealthy who are going to see an increase in their federal
taxes. They are going back to the state level and use the sales tax to shift more of the burden onto to backs of the middle class and lower income people. Witness McDonnell’s transportation funding scheme that makes no sense and now Jindal’s move in Louisiana. Next it’ll be Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and everywhere there is a Republican governor.

Yet, it’s CEO makes a gazillion bucks (see Dobb’s post), and Chenault sacks 4500 worker-bees (8.5% of the workforce), even though WITH those worker-bees, AXP made $637 million for a quarter.

Where is your outrage, Wayne? Where is ows’s outrage? Where is obama’s outrage?

60.I remember once forgetting to change my name back and getting called out by the administration and other posters. “Dave”: does it and it’s fine.

    Comment by Suzie — January 11, 2013 @ 3:23 pm

It took me four minutes to correct it. You were going to let it slide.
Small difference there, don’t you think?

  65. Ron May | January 11, 2013 at 4:01 pm

Two long time friends were also golfing buddies. They were in their 80s when one of the golfers, whose name was Frank, began to lose his eyesight. So Frank, in order to keep playing, asked his golf buddy Ed to keep an eye on his shots as they played golf. Ed agreed to do that. So when they got to the first tee to start playing Frank looked over at Ed and reminded him to watch his shot to which Ed responded, “no problem.” Frank hit his shot, turned to Ed and asked if he saw where his shot went. “Yep,” said Ed. “Well where did it go?” asked Frank. “I forgot.” said Ed. Getting old isn’t for sissies I guess. :)

    Ron May

    Funny. And all too true.

  67. Frank | January 11, 2013 at 5:07 pm

Good one, Ron. Nope, not much good in getting old. And, the last thing you do, after life’s end, is pay the tax-man. Again.

    Here’s one I enjoy:

two couples were enjoying a pleasant evening together, the wives were in the kitchen, and the gents were in the den…were Harold was telling Bill about a good restaurant Harold and and his wife enjoyed the evening before, but he was stumped on remembering the name. “Daggone it”, Harold said to Bill, “I just can’t think of it”, all the while looking at his wife out in the kitchen. Harold then turned, looked at Bill, and said to Bill, “I know, what’s the name of a flower?” And Bill says, “geeze, I don’t know, how about, ah, Rose”? “YES”, “that’s it!” Harold exclaimed!

“Hey Rose, what is the name of that restaurant we ate at last night?”

  68. Debbie | January 11, 2013 at 5:16 pm

    Frank,
Believe it or not, I have no control over any employees getting laid off by any company. The employees have my sympathy.

I also have no control over the obscene amounts of money that CEO’s make. If they take care of their employees, provide good benefits, and pay them well, good for them. If they don’t, karma’s a b***h.

62.Frank ,when I read your posts I can hear my brain cells committing suicide en masse.

    Comment by Kristen — January 11, 2013 @ 3:36 pm

Me too, and they go screaming all the way.
Now find something else to fixate on or find a good therapist. End of conversation.

  69. Debbie | January 11, 2013 at 5:22 pm

This was meant for Frank, not Kristen- Now find something else to fixate on or find a good therapist. End of conversation.

Somehow when I copied and pasted Kristen’s comment, mine ended up under it instead of above it. where it originally was.

“Hey, gdad, have you figured it out yet about Ken Chenault, and why you libs give him a pass for FIRING 5400 employees right after those same 5400 workers helped his company rake in $637 million in a THREE month period?”
    —Comment by Frank

Frank, these repetitive comments that nobody is interested in besides you is the height of jackassery. You’ve posted the same dumb garbage 10 or 11 times now. That’s the end.

  71. Steve C | January 11, 2013 at 8:04 pm

“Frank, these repetitive comments that nobody is interested in besides you is the height of jackassery. You’ve posted the same dumb garbage 10 or 11 times now. That’s the end.”

    Thank God…

  72. wayne goodman | January 11, 2013 at 8:33 pm

@39 Yet, it’s CEO makes a gazillion bucks (see Dobb’s post), and Chenault sacks 4500 worker-bees (8.5% of the workforce), even though WITH those worker-bees, AXP made $637 million for a quarter
@43 Why are you giving Amercian Express CEO Chenault a pass?

He’s sacking 4500 worker’s just after they helped his company earn $637 million in 2012

@50 Why do you think you folks are giving American Express CEO Ken Cherault a pass for sacking 4500 people right after they helped his company pile up $637 million in 2012?

@51 Hey, Debbie, why do ya think ol’ Ken Chenault is being given a pass by you libs for sacking those 4500 employees who helped his company make a profit of $637 million in 2012?

@52 Surely a smart guy like you can ‘splain why American Express’s rich, white, Wall Street CEO Ken Chenault laid off 5400 hundred worker-bees just after those same worker-bees helped him make $637 million for American Express in just THREE Months, the fourth quarter 2012. I don’t know whether Ken did, or did not pray about it before hand

@63 Hey, gdad, have you figured it out yet about Ken Chenault, and why you libs give him a pass for FIRING 5400 employees right after those same 5400 workers helped his company rake in $637 million in a THREE month period?

This doesn’t include the five or six posts which didn’t talk about a specific number of employees.
    So two questions hey Frank

    1. Is it 4500 0r 5400?
    2. Are you drunk or just nuts?

  73. Debbie | January 11, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Thank you for the laugh, Wayne.

  74. Sandi Saunders | January 11, 2013 at 8:49 pm

As my southern aunts would say, Frank is not happy till he “runs it into the ground and breaks it off”. Repeatedly. It is his credibility and he can treat it any way he likes.

  75. Steve C | January 11, 2013 at 9:05 pm

    Frank,

We’re laughing AT you, not WITH you…

I’m even starting to feel a little bit of pity for you. Good writers know how to accurately make their point and then drop it. Repeating the same thing only alienates the intended audience by giving them the impression that you suffer from a severe case of undiagnosed ADD.

This would be a clue, Frank; hope it helps.

  76. dobbs | January 11, 2013 at 9:28 pm

I feel a need to apologize to the blog. My earlier post seems to be the cause of Frank’s keyboard dysentery. Sorry about that.
Still, isn’t it strange that in posting that link, I was indeed expressing the very outrage Frank says is missing?

  77. gdad | January 11, 2013 at 9:40 pm

Hey Frank, are you stoned? And of course we know that your mangling of my name wasn’t a typo or a “mistake”.

  78. Suzie | January 11, 2013 at 9:40 pm

It took me four minutes to correct it. You were going to let it slide.
Small difference there, don’t you think?

No, I jumped in to correct mine. But it still wasn’t good enough for y’all. Dan felt he had to jump in an make an announcement. My thinking was folks would be smart enough to see if I was trying to fool them, I certainly wouldn’t use the same avatar.

  79. gdad | January 11, 2013 at 9:42 pm

“oh, wait! Now i see what you mean! dgag thinks it’s name is gdad! ok, I can roll with that.”

And so Frank does it a second time.

  80. Suzie | January 12, 2013 at 8:23 am

Frank is a brilliant writer; funny and smart. He hits the leftwingers with ridicule, which is something they aren’t used to and cannot stand. In short, he does to them what they try to do to conservatives, only without the nastiness.

  81. Frank | January 12, 2013 at 10:44 am

    Hey gdad,

Thank you for repeating what i said.

  82. gdad | January 12, 2013 at 10:53 am

“Frank is a brilliant writer; funny and smart.”

Yeah, boy, Hey Frank was just brilliant repeating the same thing 53 times in 4 minutes.

As I said before, it’s a sure sign you’re in trouble when suzie has to come to your defense.

  83. gdad | January 12, 2013 at 10:54 am

Hey Frank, repeating your doltishness for all to see isn’t something to thank me for. You should be cringing.

  84. Frank | January 12, 2013 at 11:25 am

Thank you, Suzie. And, thank you as well, gdad. There, gdad, you feel better, now?

  85. gdad | January 13, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Frank, I feel better that Dan finally shut down your mindless repetitive posts where you couldn’t even get the number the same from post to post.

  86. Debbie | January 13, 2013 at 1:29 pm

80.Frank is a brilliant writer; funny and smart

Since when is, “Hey you” considered funny or smart?

  87. Art Hill | January 13, 2013 at 1:45 pm

    Sockpuppet theater.

  88. Kristen | January 13, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Debbie, you left out the key part. It’s “Hey you LIBS”. The “libs” is what does it.

  89. Warren | January 13, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Amazing similarities in triplets separated at birth:

    Hey Sarge! (Gomer)
    Hey Verne! (Ernest)
    Hey (___)! (Frank)

(The parents named them starting with E, F and G because they wanted to start at the beginning of the alphabet. Shazzam!)

  90. Frank | January 13, 2013 at 2:02 pm

    hey you libs,

(hey Debbie, “hey” is just a …whatever…, you know? No, I guess you don’t. But, I’ve grown fond of the term since it seems to rankle you libs so much. Yep. “Hey” rankles the libs. I haven’t had any conservatives get in a twit about “hey”. Only libs seem to get in a twit about “Hey”. Why do you libs get in twits so easily? Is it something in your up-bringing? Maybe it’s group think, like lemmings?

gdad, libs’ group-hypocrisy concerning business executives knows no bounds. gdad, deal with whichever number. Those thousands of people actually will lose their jobs while the rich man gets richer. and you libs are hypocrites.

    Comment by Suzie — January 12, 2013 @ 8:23 am

Wow! I’m surprised Who knew Suzie had such a sense of humor and gift for sarcasm. Why I’ll bet she might even have a talent for the theater of the absurd.

  92. Steve C | January 13, 2013 at 2:41 pm

    #78 suz,

You reap what you sow, cupcake. Are you really surprised no one here likes you?

  93. Debbie | January 13, 2013 at 3:56 pm

Frank, I will tell you why your use of “Hey you LIBS” constantly, irritates me. It irritates me because I don’t believe you are as dumb as you pretend to be, and you sure as heck don’t pretend to be intelligent when you constantly use that phrase and say the same thing over and over and over again. Irritating people is not a virtue, Frank. It means you lack the ability to converse rationally.

Despite what Suzie said Frank, you do not come off as brilliant. You come off as an idiot auditioning for the next redneck comedy tour.

As for this comment, “Those thousands of people actually will lose their jobs while the rich man gets richer. and you libs are hypocrites.” The only people on here applauding the rich getting richer are the right wingers.

  94. dobbs | January 13, 2013 at 4:11 pm

Wayne @2:20, I am easily amused by reading almost any suzie post, but especially if I pretend she is a satirist. Try it. It’s fun!

  95. Frank | January 13, 2013 at 6:25 pm

    ah, hi Hillary,

    1. I don’t recall anyone applauding the rich getting richer…except Dan when he happily wrote about the rich white guys (well, he didn’t tell us that they are rich white guys…but they are… and we know it) getting tax-payer money from Roanoke’s government…as being such a wonderful thing…and ignoring what that same government did to Gainsboro, and to the Burkholder’s?

    2. Why didn’t any libs (well, Dobbs did brush the issue), suggest that what the rich American Express executive did to those thousands of employees is horrible, considering his company’s profitability…and as Dobb’s did point out, his own personal largess received from American Express? Yes, I think you libs are hypocrites in that regard.

    3. You know, I’ve never tried to pretend to be intelligent. That’s one I’ll have to think about, some. I can say this…ever since I began posting opinions on this blog, I was, well, you know how it goes with conservative opinions around here. I learned that ridicule and scorn seem to carry the day. I can roll with that.

So, I have a little fun, with the hypocrites, ya know?

  96. Frank | January 13, 2013 at 6:29 pm

ah, sheesh. There I go again. Hillary, I meant Debbie.

Debbie, directly above I meant you, not Hillary. Shoot (not real bullets). Sorry about that. This might help ‘splain why I try to get by with “Hey you Libs…”

  97. Debbie | January 13, 2013 at 8:08 pm

“I don’t recall anyone applauding the rich getting richer” You must skip over Suzie’s comments, Frank. I don’t blame you if you do.

Mea culpa on the pretending to be intelligent remark. :-) I should have said, your comments sure as heck don’t make you appear to be intelligent. Frank, you occasionally show that you are capable of writing coherent, thoughtful remarks. Why not make that a habit?

Large companies constantly pay their CEO’s huge sums of money made off the backs of their employees, and then turn around and lay employees off. We have no control over it Frank. No one thinks it’s okay. Screaming to the high heavens about it won’t change a damn thing.

Posting, Hey you Libs and saying the same thing 10 times in a row, just makes you seem as Hillary so aptly put it, like a child screaming Look at me, look at me!

  98. Steve C | January 13, 2013 at 9:42 pm

    #93 Debbie,

“It irritates me because I don’t believe you are as dumb as you pretend to be…”

    Hope springs eternal.

  99. Debbie | January 14, 2013 at 5:23 am

Always, Steve C, always. I just can’t help myself. :-)

  100. gdad | January 14, 2013 at 8:44 am

#95 Boy, you REALLY are dense, Frank. It’s Not NECESSARY to write a long post about how terrible it is that all these folks are losing their jobs while the company is profitable. That’s a given among intelligent, feeling people. You have no point.

And BTW, Frankie, I DID brush on it when I suggested these folks were losing their jobs because the market and greedy investors don’t like that American Express didn’t make ENOUGH. There’s no need to shout it out in detail. Folks with even minimal reading comprehension abilities got it.

And, Hey, whatever happened to your conjoined twin?
