For those of you who doubted that Repubs tried unsuccessfully to steal the election by limiting voting, here’s the latest in their plan to steal them by using gerrymandering combined with electoral college changes in selected blue states. Note that they plan no such changes in solidly red states, only in blue states where they have gerrymandered themselves into legislature majorities. In Virginia, the first step in this skullduggery happened Monday when the Senate Rethugs (there’s nothing else to call them) took advantage of a missing Dem Monday to FURTHER gerrymander. Seriously, just look at the result, with Roanoke City combined with counties like Craig, Wythe and Pulaski. Ridiculous.
This is not a tinfoil hat conspiracy theory — Repubs in various states and at the national level have publicly endorsed this as a way to win the presidency even when the popular vote AND the winner-take-all electoral process strongly favor a Dem. Repubs can’t win honestly, so they’ll rig elections instead.
From the article:
“Conclusion
When voters gave Republicans temporary control of several state legislatures in 2010, they did not sign away their right to elect different leaders in future elections. Yet Republicans have already wielded their short-lived mandate to draw legislative maps that lock in the GOP’s gains, and many Republicans are poised to implement a new plan that would make it virtually impossible for a Democrat to win the presidency. If the Republican Party can’t win elections fair and square, then their backup plan appears to be nothing more than cheating.”

gdad is shocked to find gambling in this casino
The Democrats drew districts to help them when they had power.
Well, if they don’t cheat, they cannot win. This should have been expected and must be thwarted but it is the only way they can win and they know it.
Henry, this goes far and above just drawing districts to help you win an election and you know that.
Neither side should be allowed to draw districts to help them win elections.
“The Democrats drew districts to help them when they had power.”
And guess what, Henry, I’ve argued in the past that redrawing districts should be as nonpartisan as possible no matter who is in charge!! In fact, I made that very comment on this blog just two days ago. Study up a little.
Now, tell you what, Henry, show us an example of Democrats in Virginia doing a secondary secretive reshuffle while a Repub was out of town or Dems trying to change the election process to make sure they win the presidency even when an overwhelming majority vote for the other guy.
Well wait for some sort of a rational reply.
Everyone look up John Edwards district and tell me Mark Warner didnt draw that one up. GERRYMANDERED!
If this bill passes, I will never vote in Virginia again. It is a fraud. It is a g*dd*mned fraud on the highest scale.
Ill post for you guys. District 21, Virginia State Senate…compliments of Mark Warner

“Dems trying to change the election process to make sure they win the presidency even when an overwhelming majority vote for the other guy.”
Oh yeah. You guys got PWN3D by Bush in 2000. Your precinct captains pre-punched the ballots in Florida for Buchanan instead of Gore. BAHAHAHA!!!!
Tell your politicians to stay in town instead of running off to see their girlfriends.
pp, Edwards’ district was drawn up the GA. McDonnell was governor. Now what the heck are you talking about?
#10 IOW, Henry has nothing whatsoever. You’re really flailing badly these days, Henry. Having to flee threads after being destroyed or posting something manic to distract. It’s sad.
pp, please try to make at least a teeny, tiny bit of sense.
#7: PP, Mark Warner has only served as Governor and Senator, neither of which draws up legislative districts. You’re wrong, you’re losing the long game, and you’re looking foolish doing so.
Did Manti Te’o lie, or not?
Give the guy a break.. it’s not like he is President of the United States. Sheesh.
15 yeah obama lies daily and he gets away with it !!
New sickness from Republicans:
“A Republican lawmaker in New Mexico introduced a bill on Wednesday that would legally require victims of rape to carry their pregnancies to term in order to use the fetus as evidence for a sexual assault trial.
House Bill 206, introduced by state Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R), would charge a rape victim who ended her pregnancy with a third-degree felony for “tampering with evidence.”
Had the opportunity to visit the VMFA in Richmond to see the Chihuly’s exhibit. Talk about color. Spectacular.
So call the Governor and tell him to veto the re-districting bill @ 804-786-2211. I did. Just maybe he sees this backstabbing move for what it is. He’s already got enough bad press if he wants to continue in public service so maybe he won’t sign. He surely will if we don’t raise hell about it.
Old blue…we saw that last fall. I even sent a pic from it to Dan in case he does a thread with an ocean theme any time. I saved the pic for my phone wall paper. Just beautiful.

Saintbridge
When this bill passes would you and all of your liberal buddies please honor your pledge. Thank You.
So, terps, you think this is the kind of crap the legislature should be pulling? And then trying to turn it into a change in the electoral procedure?
Cold, you (and some others) have totally misunderstood the redistricting bill. See, it creates a new majority-minority district. It’s actually a minority outreach effort by the GOP senators, who are keenly aware that blacks have deserted the Republican Party. That’s why they passed it on MLK Day and all. And the reason that it came up by surprise is that it was kind of an afterthought — like the pedestrian plaza on the City Market.
Carrico’s bill on reapportioning Virginia’s electoral college votes is similarly misunderstood. That is an “acres-rights” piece of legislation. Right now, the districts with the most acres (like those in deserts, and coalfields) are totally getting the shaft in the Electoral College. Carrico’s bill would seek to balance that.
It’s not the be-all and end-all, however. Both the 9th Congressional District and the 5th Congressional District are bigger than the state of New Jersey in area. Even if Carrico’s bill passes, they will still have only 1 EV each. New Jersey has 14, which is outrageously unfair. So there is still some election-rigging work to be done on that level.
/sarcasm font off
Terps is FOR anything that gives his party an advantage and AGAINST anything that doesn’t. He’s pretty upfront about that. He’s a freak when it comes to rational self interest.
Gdad @ 3:13 Just when you thing you’ve heard it all.
“Terps is FOR anything that gives his party an advantage and AGAINST anything that doesn’t. ”
Said the guy who works for a newspaper controlled by the Democratic Party.

Well Dan, that’s close. I’m actually for defeating liberalism because I think it is destroying the country. So, if gerrymandering helps defeat liberalism(no matter how ugly it looks)….then I’m for it.
But Saintbridge made my day when he said he won’t vote anymore. How can I convince the rest of you libs to follow his lead.
Yeah Dan, and part of the reason the Governor wants to end the gas tax and increase the sales tax is so nobody will notice the money spent on putting walls up around these minority districts so nobody will move around. Keep’em on the plantation!

Why is it that conservatives seem to have such conditional love for democracy? When the majority of the American people tell you with their votes that you’re unfit to lead, guess what? The problem is you, not the system.
“We don’t need to change. The problem can’t possibly be us. We lost America but God is still on our side, right? Hmm… He’s not helping us much. Plan B: Let’s stack the deck!”
I’m beginning to think that political affiliation of any sort is a disease.
Terps, do you have 100 million dollars lying around? Because if you don’t, then you’re what real Republicans call a “useful idiot.”

PP does not get it Warren, and here’s why: In the RWer newspeak, any RWer assertion = truth. The bolder and more outrageously false an assertion is, the more truth it contains. And anything that undermines such a RWer assertion is a flat-out lie. Of course, this doesn’t comport with the dictionary. How could it? Dictionaries are another liberal conspiracy.
They feel very comfortable in this place, like an ugly guy in a bar, being fawned over by blind waitresses who are telling him how handsome he is.
Oh sorry, gdad already had it.
Does the proposed district look any less purposely “drawn”?

Ruskin, his best quote ever in my humble opinion is as follows:
There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man’s lawful prey.
pp forgot to mention that Edwards proposed district is EVEN worse. He also has absolutely no reply when we correctly point out that Mark Warner had nothing to do with any of it.
So I guess terps would be OK with liberals grabbing all the guns in the nation if it helps elect Rethugs.
Just heard on WDBJ that the governor couldn’t fly into Roanoke today due to high winds. I work near the airport and saw aircraft coming and going all day. Everything from the bigger jets to private prop planes. Why the B.S. excuse from Bob?
We were assured by Suzie, Leon and their cohorts the week after the election that the bottom was falling out of the market and that by the time we reached inauguration day the economy would be in the tank and joblessness running rampant. Today the DJA is less than four hundred under its all time high. And here is the jobless report:

Those predictions just keep on coming true! Along with Dick Morris and the unskewed polls guy and the Romney campaign folks, these are just the people I’dlike to have in charge of my investments or in charge of running the government. Not one of them could find their butt with an upside down periscope.
Harry Reid has chickened out and caved in to the Senate’s good ole boy network on filibuster reform leaving the Senate repubs free to keep on with their obstructionism. I’m ready for a new majority leader.
How resounding a defeat for the anti-liberty crowd! None of their stuff even made it to crossover. Killed off with bipartisan support. Gun control is a loser.

1. Great night for Virginia gun owners
*******************************************
Great job, VCDL! All of the gun bills that VCDL strongly opposed are now dead! Even better, an important pro-gun bill passes out of subcommittee….
This evening the remaining gun-control bills that VCDL STRONGLY OPPOSED were KILLED in the House Militia, Police and Public Safety subcommittee #1:
HB 1410, Jim Scott, disarms individuals who have committed certain *misdemeanors.* This bill was withdrawn by Delegate Scott.
HB 2221, Hope, added those who are unable to own a gun due to mental illness to the list of people that a person cannot knowingly give or sell a gun to.
HB 2240, Cosgrove, provides more information on disqualified gun owners to the federal NICS system. This bill was one that VCDL switched from opposed to neutral, based on a clarification. This bill may be brought back up again.
HB 2251, Lopez, bans magazines that hold more than 20 rounds. This bill was particularly evil, having a registry and a limit of 3 such magazines a person can have TOTAL. Delegate Gilbert provided a quote by Stalin during the hearing: people who ignorantly promoted communism were “useful idiots.” Gilbert didn’t say that Lopez was such an idiot, but Lopez took offense anyway. All I can say is, if the shoe fits, wear it. Looking at the onerous items in that bill, it is definitely a shoe in Lopez’s size.
HB 2263, Krupicka, allows the police to temporarily confiscate a person’s guns if in the opinion of a mental health professional a person has verbalized a threat of suicide or harming others. Not adjudication is required to take someone’s private property by force. That is not good.
HB 2281, Ward, requires that stolen guns be entered into the VCIN system. The subcommittee felt this bill did nothing useful.
HB 2327, Brink, reinstates One Handgun a Month.
-
The following pro-gun bills were passed out of subcommittee or carried over until next week:
HB 1592, Cole, allows private schools and child day centers to have armed security guards. Passed out of subcommittee.
HB 2317, Anderson, allows armed force members who commute from nearby states to a permanent duty station in Virginia to be able to purchase guns here. Carried over until next week.
HB 2342, Lingamfelter, allows CHP holders to get an expedited background check when purchasing a gun. Carried over until next week….
VCDL’s defensive game is now pretty much over at the state level… and we can focus on the offense – getting the remaining pro-gun bills onto the Governor’s desk.

2. Biden hides from gun groups
*******************************************
Not until the last minute did Vice President Biden mention where he was going to be holding a gun-control meeting in Richmond. The meeting is being held at VCU and is NOT open to the public. And don’t forget about the Secret Service’s new powers to declare the area around the President or Vice President a “free-speech free zone.”
Biden isn’t really interested in having gun owners passing out GSL stickers to those in attendance. You know, it would be embarrassing for him.
The President has an agenda to move forward. Truth, facts, and transparency are NOT part of that effort.

HB 2221, Hope given to those who are unable to own a gun due to mental illness, by not listing people that a person cannot knowingly give or sell a gun to.

At least terps is telling the truth about his real motivation. The end justifies the means…the Teapublican mantra.
Warren is so bitter. His opinions aren’t as popular as he would like to think they are.
John W, you really think Obama invented not opening meetings to the public? Are you really that uninformed? Sad.
Your posts have been much more manic lately. Maybe you need medication and to lock your guns up for a while.
“Gun control is a loser.”
Hmm, I’d say the losers are the people who spend untold dollars, time and effort worrying about mostly imaginary “dangers” and shilling for the gun and ammunition manufacturers.
What I want to know, dobbs, is where is the outrage at McD from the right wingers who claimed to be appalled when Obama flew around pushing his agenda. I wonder why they’re not upset at McD wasting state money. Especially since the idea he’s pushing is so lamebrained.
Come on, wayne, we all know that if Romney had won, the stock market would have doubled by now and unemployment would have dropped to 2 percent. Honestly, that’s pretty much what some of the Obama haters were saying.
Poor little Warren.
Poor little Gdad…just can`t shake it, can ya ? It is eating you alive and we get to watch. Think I`ll go buy a new gun today.
Comment by Warren — January 25, 2013 @ 2:03 am
Wilburn’s post is better and makes sense. Warren’s post is pathetic. . .you must have something more productive to do at 2:00 in the morning.
I definitely can’t shake the rampant lying by you, apple.
Yes, the VCDL tries to fool it’s followers into thinking that “free speech zones” weren’t a widely reported Orwellian innovation of the Bush/Cheney administration, and John Wilburn, self-proclaimed “student of history”, swallows it whole. Delicious!
JW, a free thinker, he thinks.
Applewood and Leon are the posters who’re lending their persuasive ability to the support of John Wilburn’s gun mania?
Sweet!
Don’t let the insults overshadow the fact that GUN CONTROL IS A LOSER AND GOT SPANKED IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY!
Leon, applewood – high five!
Since Warren has just consumed a full plate of legislative failure, let’s treat him to some pro-rights victories for dessert!
John W. – you do understand that if the Federal Government places restrictions or regulations on “assault” weapons, your high five will be meaningless.. Federal regs will trump state inaction.
Hillary:
“Federal regs will trump state inaction.”
I realize that federal tyranny is still lurking large, but the way you dismiss states’ rights is troubling. It certainly should not trump states’ rights and this is not “inaction”; it is a rebuke of assaults on our rights. Hopefully, the feds will take note!
Do you approve of the unlawful way New York rammed their junk legislation down her citizens’ throats? Those legislators broke laws out of fear that their self-serving legislation wouldn’t make it through the proper procedure.
John W – I am not dismissing states’ rights. As a matter of course, however, one cannot dismiss the 2nd Amendment which gives the Federal Govt the right to regulate guns as determined in Heller – “”the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited.”
If you support that decision, you will note that Scalia has said a number of times, that the rights of gun owners are not unlimited and left the door open for regulations.
The New York law = some parts are window dressing, some parts like the mental health provisions will never be enforced – and some parts – I would think you would champion – have provisions for privacy of gun owners.
John – the NY law is a starting point which will face court challenges and revisions. It’s a starting point, not an ending point.
Tell us who started “free speech zones”, John. Was it who the VCDL VA-Alert tells its’ members it was, or are they WRONG?
C’Mon , student of history, unleaded minds await your response.
Hillary:
“John – the NY law is a starting point which will face court challenges and revisions. It’s a starting point, not an ending point.”
Back up there, Hilary. Do you support ramming the law through, voted and signed into law in less than an hour, despite not waiting the three days as required by law since it is a package you agree with? You agree with stomping on your state’s constitution, then refining it with court challenges? Surely not. Done lawfully, it wouldn’t have passed as it was and they knew it. They are scoundrels.
“Warren”:
71.”Tell us who started “free speech zones”, John.”
Apparently, colleges and universities.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_speech_zone
Bush very well may have expanded them as he was an authoritarian. But they were again expanded and embraced by the president you worship.
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr347enr/pdf/BILLS-112hr347enr.pdf
JW, from the link YOU provided, here’s the portion of the act defining the behavior that is proscribed.
‘‘(1) knowingly enters or remains in any restricted building
or grounds without lawful authority to do so;
‘‘(2) knowingly, and with intent to impede or disrupt the
orderly conduct of Government business or official functions,
engages in disorderly or disruptive conduct in, or within such
proximity to, any restricted building or grounds when, or so
that, such conduct, in fact, impedes or disrupts the orderly
conduct of Government business or official functions;
‘‘(3) knowingly, and with the intent to impede or disrupt
the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions,
obstructs or impedes ingress or egress to or from any restricted
building or grounds; or
‘‘(4) knowingly engages in any act of physical violence
against any person or property in any restricted building or
grounds; or attempts or conspires to do so
BUT, the VCDL’s VA-ALERT that YOU copied said it gives “(the Secret Service) new powers to declare the area around the President or Vice President a free speech zone”
Now YOU tell us where the act mentions speech. Unlawful entry, disruptive conduct, obstruction of egress, and physical violence are the four specified areas that it addresses.
I’m no fan of Bush/Cheney free speech zones, and also wish such legislation as the above was never needed. But the idea is not now being employed for Owellian free speech suppression as Bush/Cheney used it; proscribed entry zones are used by the Secret Service in the Obama administration for security of the first black president, during a time when anti-government gun nuts are rampant.
Yet, the VCDL’s VA-ALERT that you copied said it gives “(the Secret Service) new powers to declare the area around the President or Vice President a free speech zone”
YOU tell us where the act mentions speech. Not activity broadly construed as speech in theory, like corporate donations to politicians, but actual vocalized speech, e.g. yelling “Hey Biden, my gun loves me”.
If you can’t, we’ll all know that the VCDL’s VA-ALERT used a big fat polemical lie, and we’ll also know that you refuse to admit it, making ownership of the lie extend to you, John Wilburn.
Warren, the link shows cages and far removed designated areas for vocal free speech and signs. You are quite obviously going after a new obscure angle to help vent and grieve after losing so very badly in the General Assembly. I know the fresh wound of maintaining one’s rights must sting, but I wish you the best in recovery.
.
John W. – there are many parts of the NY law that I agree with, notwithstanding your position that it was “rammed” through:
What I like:
The maximum capacity of an ammunition magazine would be reduced from 10 rounds to seven, and a current exemption for clips manufactured before 1994 will end.
Private sales of firearms, which now proceed unfettered, would require a background check through a licensed dealer, putting those transactions in line with current purchasing requirements for rifles and shotguns.
The new regulations would adjust the definition of a banned assault rifle so that any single characteristic — such as a telescoping stock, flash suppressor, bayonet attachment or pistol grip — on a semiautomatic rifle would render it illegal. Existing weapons would be grandfathered in, but their ownership could not be transferred.
And courtesy of the republicans in the NY senate, the bill also stiffens penalties for people who use guns criminally – the murder of a first responder will become a felony punishable by life in prison without parole.
What about these regulations, do you not agree with? I can tell you I believe the mental health component will simply not be enforceable, but there are still plenty to like about the bill, IMO.
And BTW, Cuomo had said he feared an “unprecedented” rush to buy assault weapons if he waited three days for a legislative vote. NY Governors often use the “message of necessity” which had been created for emergencies – to get a deal that has been negotiated between both parties made into law before lobbyists [NRA for example] can begin to chip away at the provisions.
Hillary:
“What about these regulations, do you not agree with?”
Virtually all of it….
“The maximum capacity of an ammunition magazine would be reduced from 10 rounds to seven, and a current exemption for clips manufactured before 1994 will end.”
That number of 7 is to try to force people to carry revolvers as to not only put them at a disadvantage against criminals who will definitely still keep their semi-autos. Who cares about people without the finger strength to manipulate a heavy revolver trigger…. they don’t matter. Then again, they make sure that next to no one can get a permit to carry anyway.
“current exemption for clips manufactured before 1994 will end.
“Private sales of firearms, which now proceed unfettered, would require a background check through a licensed dealer, putting those transactions in line with current purchasing requirements for rifles and shotguns.”
Mandatory background checks are registration. Registration is the first step toward confiscation.
“The new regulations would adjust the definition of a banned assault rifle so that any single characteristic — such as a telescoping stock, flash suppressor, bayonet attachment or pistol grip — on a semiautomatic rifle would render it illegal. Existing weapons would be grandfathered in, but their ownership could not be transferred.”
One day I will likely inherit my father’s 1842 Springfield and its original bayonet. New Yorkers will have those family heirlooms confiscated by the government. That is horrible. That single test thing is positively ridiculous and merely continues in same track as the first stupid scary-looking gun ban.
“And BTW, Cuomo had said he feared an “unprecedented” rush to buy assault weapons if he waited three days for a legislative vote. NY Governors often use the “message of necessity” which had been created for emergencies”
The crown is alive and well….. Wake up people.

John W – The part about “Existing weapons would be grandfathered in, but their ownership could not be transferred” clause is not directed at your father’s old gun.
The section does refer to “antique” guns which is any magazine or gun manufactured “more than 50 years ago”….and if you have an old rifle passed down from your father it is exempt – according to the new NY gun laws- from the prohibition against transfer, but if the gun qualifies as an assault weapon it must be registered.
As far as selling guns or buying – in NY a background check will be required by either a dealer or private seller. Don’t like NY rules? Well you can sell your gun in another state other than NY [provided you follow the laws of each state and any federal laws].
Problem solved, no?
Hillary:
“Problem solved, no?”
Of course not! Those folks are living under some ugly authoritarian leadership. Oh well… their rights to throw away. I’ll never live there.

There are some steps we can take to lessen the power of “elites” right now. For instance, we can eliminate the authoritarian rules that require broker and agent licenses to sell real estate for others. Why would people rail against elites and government rules but then support that example, unless they are selective according to their own selfish interests?
So those who love liberty should support steps to lessen, and eventually end, real estate license requirements. Broker’s licenses don’t protect people, people protect people. When anyone can broker real estate for anyone else, we’ll have a safer real estate marketplace.
And if the National Association of Realtors start claiming that the government wants to take everyone’s broker licenses away, shouldn’t we believe them at face value? After all, you can’t spell NAR without N-R-A.

Warren has just plain run out of ammo. He cannot come up with any intelligent argument, so he starts slamming on real estate licenses hoping no one here would remember my direct answer to this exact question, which made him hop to another topic, last time asked.

No surprise that JW uses a gun reference, that’s all he can think about. But the truth is, I stayed on topic. I continued the very legitimate example of JW’s self-serving hypocrisy, and I’ll keep doing so, because when his ammo isn’t bullets, he’s as well equipped to persuade others as any gummint hatin’ militia sympathizer with a gun obsession can be.
