Hi J.M.,

Well, things do tend to evolve, or die, don't they? i don't suspect that atheism will die, but i do suspect it will continue to evolve. Thats what organizations do.

JM, I do appreciate that you did go on and read the rest of what I had to say. And thus far, you haven't mentioned that you actively recruit folks of like mind to your recreationally-oriented activities, by taking out bill board advertisements, otherwise known as "advertising" your temple of ...oops..., your "Pit of DOOOOOOOM activities for like-minded folks. Your's certainly has the appearance of personal fun and excercise, along with bragging rights to "who's your daddy, ...NOW"? And, some booze and stuff. Should you advertise, trust me that the crowds will foist some organization on you, or, you'll wish for the days when your every other month activity was, ah, "simpler".

And, while it surprises me a little that anyone fighting in your pit would admit that they actually wanted stitches, I think you ought to just forgo paying for stitches, and let opponents do the trick with staple guns, if stitches are desired.

Yes, I agree with you about that disabled thing. I hope that doesn't happen as well. If it does, might I suggest that those folks be given all the booze and stuff they want at every meeting, as well as be recognized for their contributions to the Pit of DOOOOOOM. Charity is important.

"With the increased membership, I think..."

I stopped reading there. Let's keep it believable, Frank.

Seriously though, can you outline an actual need for all that stuff? I gather once every other month with about 30 of my friends to strap on some gloves and pit fight (yes, I do indeed have a Pit of DOOOOOOOOM!). Every month more people come to watch and participate. Do we need to do all that stuff, too?

Statement of belief: we believe that we should assemble as friends and acquaintances and beat the hell out of each other for a couple of hours every two months.

Meeting place: an undisclosed location deep in the woods of Montgomery County.

We actually do take up an offering for Our Church of the Unholy Head Kick. It's for stitches and booze. We're also hoping that we don't end up disabled. Does any of that count?

@161 Frank says, "With the increased membership, I think the atheists should develop a statement of what they stand for (statement of belief, creed, etc.) secure a meeting place, and begin passing the plate to fund future endeavers. Then, when they reach sufficient capacity, they should be able to help the poor, the disabled, and those among themselves who have fallen on hard times."

You'll be pleased to know there is the Humanist Manifesto and the Amsterdam Declaration. Please read those if you want to know what we stand for.

http://www.iheu.org/adamdecl.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanist_Manifesto

We have a meeting place although it's not permanent. We'll accept donations (if you'd like to contribute) but like many organizations, we don't (currently) charge to be part of our particular club. And we do help the people in our group and outside organizations when we can.

Admittedly we're small by comparison to many religious organizations so it's understandable the religious have a larger public presence when it comes to charitable works.

But I'm working on a gun buy-back program to be part of our Humanist group. Got any you'd like to give up to be destroyed?

Or, Frank, having studied the historical outcomes associated with the model you advocate here, athiests might simply gather in fellowship and perform good works within their communities without all the dogmatic baggage.

I reckon they would start their "where-they-stand" statement with this radical notion: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

And I bet they would add that they believe government agent-led prayer in public schools is wrong.

Just for starters . . .
