Hate to hear about Eddie Jr. And so soon after his Dad's passing. I too was at the "Remember the Titans" game. I remember commenting that never before or since had I seen that many players on one high school team. I also covered some games in which Eddie played as a part time sports writer
for the RT back in those days. He was a talent and I always thought that talent never got fully realized.

It's just a hideous shame the Sandi bill had to be loaded down with pork. Again, a large majority of Democrats were behind it, and lied about Republicans not wanting to help the victims. They wanted to help, of course. They just opposed the pork. And Democrats even opposed a GOP proposal to offset the spending in other areas.

The Democrat Party is 100% irresponsible. Spending without restraint when we can't afford it. As President Romney said, it's completely immoral.

For gdad, Wayne, and anyone else who remembers local sports in the era of the Charlie Coffey Hokies, or the Gainer Patriots/Joyce Wolverines rivalry (pass it to the sports staff if you wish, Dan):

Former Va. Tech and Andrew Lewis H.S. quarterback Eddie Joyce Jr. died last night in North Carolina.

After a high school career in which he was named all state, set several VHSL passing records and quarterbacked his team to the state championship game in the "Remember the Titans" game in 1972, he signed with Va. Tech. There he was pressed in to the starting role midway through his freshman season by coach Charlie Coffey, making his debut against one of the strongest Alabama team of Bear Bryant's tenure. With the replacement of Coffey by Jimmy Sharpe, Joyce chose to leave the program, and he subsequently played for several minor league professional teams over the next decade. He also began a career in coaching, at high schools in North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia, and for several semi-professional teams.

His father, Coach Eddie Joyce Sr., who led teams to the VHSL state championship game five times in twelve years, died in 2012.

Eddie Joyce Jr. is survived by two sons, a brother and two sisters.
Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

What should be done about the Sandy Hook shootings? Absolutely nothing. Nuts will still mass murder. They've been doing it for centuries, guns or no.

I am sick of the knee-jerk response to every attack and tragedy be loss of liberty.

It's incredible when you think of all the freedom you had in the 70s but not today. Back then, you could enter any hotel or college dorm through any door. Today all the side and back doors are locked. Sometimes even the front.

Air travel has become highly inconvenient for the average traveler.

Walkers and runners aren't allowed to use many tracks during school hours.

You can't throw away fluorescent light bulbs now. You have to transport them to the transfer station, but only on every 3rd Saturday afternoon.

Freon now can't be released into the air (doubling the cost of AC-related costs)

You have to buy specially-coated expensive screws for treated lumber now because deer somewhere munched on a treated board and got sick, so the treatment chemicals had to be changed).

This list doesn't even scratch the surface.

Conspiracy theorists abound everywhere. I'm a little surprised that no one has alleged that the whole thing was done by the government to facilitate new gun control legislation. It's the same wacky reasoning that was used to accuse the government of being behind 9/11 as an excuse to start a war.

<a href="http://www.roanoke.com/news/breaking/wb/319061" rel="nofollow">"Here"</a>, I suppose, is yet another wrongly prosecuted soul who will now have to be a part of the evil sex offender registry, right?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/15/nra-membership-discounts_n_2481607.html

"A lifetime membership, which usually goes for $1,000, now costs $300. The group throws in a monthly magazine (the reading variety, not ammunition), a decal for your car, as well as promises of membership discounts on hotels and car rentals. The person who answered the phone thought that a free knife may have come with the offer but, upon checking, she discovered it did not.
A 70 percent discount is a tough deal to pass up. But the hotline was also offering discounts on a yearlong membership. The usual price was $35. It had been knocked down to $20."

So the NRA is running a Groupon! I wonder if the KKK is offering similar deals.
