A question many regulars here have asked . . .
Lots of you have been asking this question since the change to the new format. I never realized how popular the “Last 10 posts” menu on the right side of the page was.
Rest assured, I’m looking into this with the tech wizards at Roanoke.com. Thanks to your feedback I’d like to bring them back. Right now I’m trying to find out if that’s possible.
In the meantime, there’s a workaround. I believe it was Pirengle who first spotted this.
Under the “About this blog” heading to the right is a link called RSS feed. Click on that and it will take you to a page listing the last 10 posts, with the beginning text for each.
Please use this until we’re able to get the old menu back . . . if that’s possible. In the meantime, you might want to bookmark that page.

Wasn’t me, chief. Dave Gresham, I think. I’m the one who’s been banging my head against the wall about the paragraph HTML tags till I gave up and started using Sandi’s solution.
I have to say, so far I’m not impressed with the new format. I’m sure some of it is just unfamiliarity, but some changes are the same as I’ve seen on other sites and I never got used to them. Eg., the main page is too ‘busy’, and the list(s) of articles aren’t as easy to parse or navigate (or even find, for new users).
Please see what you can do to bring back the RSS feeds for each thread.
That was the best way to keep up with threads.

Dave, if you click here: http://blogs.roanoke.com/dancasey/feed/ you can sign up for the RSS feeds at the top of the page, right?
When I click on your RSS Feed link I get this at the top of the page “This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.” and then a whole page full of HTML hieroglyphics…Is that supposed to mean something?

Sandi (and Dave Hicks),
I’ve forwarded this issue to Mari, fyi. Thanks for bring it to my attention.
Well Mari is our girl, she can fix it! Thanks!
The RSS Feed link works for me. It’s odd how different computers are reacting differently to the changes.
Dan et al,
The RSS feed at the top appears to be the same as the one from the old version / old site for the “blog in its entirety” — i.e., I get a feed for each new thread.
Had that. Still have the old one. Works fine — i.e., it notifies me when you start new threads.
In addition to that feed, the old old version / old site had RSS feeds for each “individual thread” — to notify us of new comments being posted to an individual thread.
I used both.
The “individual thread” RSS feed was very useful in keeping track of comments in the threads of particular interest to the individual blogger — e.g., often someone would add comment after that thread was no longer in the most recent “x” number, had been dormant for a few days, etc.
Just notice another missing tool (or can’t find it if it is there).
-
In the old system you could click on the time stamp of an individual comment to create a url for that page starting at that comment.
-
Would love to have that tool back or be told where it is.
