Caption This! note on an Applebee’s check

zero_percent

imgur.com | h/t to Justin True

This Applebees tip note thingy has really taken on a life of its own. On the left is one example, brought to my attention by Justin True.

Some people are calling for a boycott of the restaurant chain. But it might be more effective to actually dine there and write fun notes on the check, like “Hire back the fired waitress or I won’t dine here again!” or something else.

You all are a creative crowd. Put your thinking caps on, and come up with something clever like the photo here. Then put your suggestion in the comments, for the amusement of the rest of us.

The best thing that could happen in this sad episode would be for the so-called ‘Pastor’ to exercise forgiveness and ask Applebee’s to re-hire the waitress.

    Doubt that will happen though.

  2. Pirengle | February 1, 2013 at 11:51 am

I removed Applebees from my food list when they announced they would hire more part-time people to avoid paying their health insurance. Same with several other chain restaurants. What a company does is its business, but announcing such measures specifically to avoid providing employees affordable health care, that ain’t right.

  3. Renee | February 1, 2013 at 12:12 pm

From what I understand, this whole thing has been blown completely out of proportion by the media/social media. The waitress that got fired wasn’t even the one serving the table. She came along & snapped the picture then posted it without the serving waitress knowing. This other waitress was the one who actually got fired not the serving one. Company policy handbook plainly states that such instances would be met with disciplinary action. This server signed off when she was hired so she should’ve been full aware of what would happen should she do something so stupid. Maybe the pastor was in the wrong with her snide comment but that is the only thing to be apologized for on her end & if I’m not mistaken that was taken care of. Bottom line is, most people just need to do a little research before jumping to such wild conclusions.

  4. Other John | February 1, 2013 at 12:25 pm

Same for me Pirengle…we really don’t eat much at chains for the most part. Honestly, in the past 2 months, the only chains we’ve eaten at are Dennys and Bojangles…and that’s not been terribly frequent. But, we have eaten at a few local establishments like The Palisades, Lucie Monroe’s, Sal’s, etc.

As for the receipt…I don’t have anything particularly clever, we just almost always tip 20-25%…more if we keep hanging out for an extended period of time, less if for some reason the service isn’t good. But, for places we have frequented, we usually get awesome service because we tip well, and many of the servers we have had repeatedly and know our drink orders when they see us walk in.

  5. Eddie | February 1, 2013 at 12:26 pm

I saw it on CNN this morning. That so called pastor should be humiliated but I’ll bet she isn’t. And I’ll bet she’s a liar and a thief! She’s probably lying about giving 10% and probably stealing from the collection plate! I’d hate to be her on judgment day! She is disgusting!

  6. 3rdFred | February 1, 2013 at 12:28 pm

Some years ago I was in a restaurant, had a meal, then looked up behind the counter. A large sign in block letters proclaimed: THE 10% TIP WENT OUT WITH THE FREE LUNCH. I gave ‘em a tip: remove the sign & stop being so arrogant. Note: the waiter got no tip.

  7. Justin True | February 1, 2013 at 12:29 pm

Rob, the sad thing about the Pastor’s comment was the level of selfishness that she put into it.
Her being the Pastor of her church means that she would be the one benefiting from her congregation. She would benefit from them giving their 10%. So, does she give 10% to herself every time she begs in her church? Doubtful. It takes the level of hypocrisy that much higher in her case. She doesn’t really need to apologize, she needs to gain some empathy.

    A+ Rob.
    A+ Pirengle.

I can see Applebee’s (or any business) side of this. It is not “good” publicity and who wants to eat where the employees will rat you out? If she had been smart and blacked out the identifying info she might not have been fired. Certainly such a cheap skate needed to be outed, I have NO gripe with that, but the waitress did not handle it correctly either. Hopefully they both learned a lesson.

  10. Sandi Saunders | February 1, 2013 at 12:37 pm

+1 Pirengle. I used to be a regular for lunch (selection is limited on this side of town), but no more.

  11. Suzie | February 1, 2013 at 12:48 pm

What a company does is its business, but announcing such measures specifically to avoid providing employees affordable health care, that ain’t right.

Businesses have to what they can to stay afloat after being punished by the government. The funny thing is some people were getting health care before obamacare. now won’t be. obamacare has actually HURT these low-wage workers.

Wonder why this doesn’t bother the libs. Oh, that’s right. They don’t care about poor people.

  17. gdad | February 1, 2013 at 1:27 pm

I just don’t understand why Henry would bring up race for no reason at all. “We” already knew what she looked like, Henry.

  18. Other John | February 1, 2013 at 1:28 pm

The roasted chicken bites combo. Their fries and Bo rounds are GF (separate fryer from the chicken), so are the mashed potatoes without gravy. The dirty rice is not GF…but thankfully their tea is…I love their unsweet tea, which I know is sacriligious as a native Georgian, but I like tasting the tea and not a cup full of tinted sugar water.

We usually get the biscuits bagged separately and take them to my in-laws, or just don’t get them at all. The one in Fairlawn frequently gives us a little extra with the sides when we don’t take the biscuits, which is cool.

  19. Dan Casey | February 1, 2013 at 1:29 pm

    How about:

“I give Dan Casey’s blog my 2 cents worth all day long. You get 4 cents!”

  20. Other John | February 1, 2013 at 1:30 pm

It’s nice because most of our travel is in the southeast, so it gives us a place we can stop at on a road trip where we can eat cheaply and quickly…otherwise we really have to almost make a AAA Trip-Tick of potential dining options along our route, or close to it. We’ve done that before, and hit up some great places in Savannah, Columbia, Atlanta, Charlotte, and elsewhere…but that’s when we’re making the driving part of the adventure of the trip…rather than trying to traverse from A to B as quickly as we can.

  21. gdad | February 1, 2013 at 1:37 pm

There sure isn’t much there, Dan. Beans, fries (if the fryer is dedicated), roasted chicken bites, salad. The rice has wheat, as do the green beans, of all things. But you CAN get enough if need be.

    http://www.bojangles.com/_assets/pdf/BOJ_Nutrition_Facts_2012.pdf

I’ve avoided Applebees not only because I didn’t think the food was worth what you paid, but also because for a number of years they refused to even discuss what might or might not be gluten free. Noe they do have a list.

Chains are for parents with kids. Once mine migrated out of the house to other parts of the world ( an I quit paying for them) other far more interesting options became possible.

Right now I’m thinking happy hour at Lucky. They advertise a unique oak barrel porter that comes highly recommended. Think I’ll see how it goes with whatever they are cooking this evening.

Check out Henry’s link and then watch the Pastor in action. After watching that I’m thinking.

I ate at Applebees once. Over rated. Waitress dumped my dinner in my lap. Mistakes happen, but she handled the situation very poorly and so did her manager after I called her over.

    As for the pastor? Shame.

I wouldn’t go in to eat there every again and so no note from me.

  26. Dan Casey | February 1, 2013 at 1:55 pm

    Here’s what Suzie would write:

“People didn’t heed Fatima, so I’m giving you ZIP, except if you lick this receipt, I’ll give you the Spanish Flu. (Besides you’re an idiot for working for $2 an hour! You think I should pay you for THAT?)”

  27. Other John | February 1, 2013 at 1:57 pm

While still not a caption…we’ve tipped double a couple times when patrons at other tables stiffed their server, who also happened to be our server…and who happened to be doing a damn fine job as well.

  28. Eddie | February 1, 2013 at 2:05 pm

I went to Henry’s link. It says she wrote a few books and one book was on fasting. What a hypocrite! She’s never fasted a day in her life!

  29. Suzie | February 1, 2013 at 2:18 pm

Hmm. Notice most of the early posts by libs were directed at the ‘pastor’ until Henry revealed the pastor was a black woman. After that, the criticism was all directed at corporate Appleby’s, and nothing more about the black woman.

This thread says more about liberal hypocrites in here than it does about anything else.

    –Suzie

This is wrong. I’ve defended Applebees action and criticized the pastor. What she wrote was uncalled for and unkind. And besides that, I really want to know more about that 10 percent she tithes to her 15-person congregation church, and whether her own tax-deductible tithe ends up in her pocket.

  38. Sandi Saunders | February 1, 2013 at 3:29 pm

I still want to know how she (or anyone else) gives money to God? Like a lot of other people who believe they are lashing out from the safety of anonymity, the “Pastor” is sorry and “ashamed” after she is busted. Typical.

The waitress would probably never have been fired if the “Pastor” had not called her work and had one of her self-righteous fits because her dirty deed was exposed. She claimed to have left a cash tip but if that was true then she also told a lie…Nope, the only thing I wonder about is who would give her their time to waste, much less their money. Oh that’s right, she sends it to God.

    Pastor Suzie, get over yourself.

  39. Frank | February 1, 2013 at 3:29 pm

hay dano, …look at you…you’re trollin’!

  40. gdad | February 1, 2013 at 3:33 pm

suzie, you really ought to just quit lying. LONG before Henry posted the link, it was posted more than once on this thread:

    http://blogs.roanoke.com/dancasey/2013/01/a-hard-fought-right-on-the-thursday-open-thread/#comments

And the reaction was somewhat mixed, but with more — including Liberals — criticized the pastor.

Terrible trolling effort, suze. Henry’s the one who brought up race.

  41. Other John | February 1, 2013 at 3:36 pm

The concept of giving money to God is false. People give money to the church, a physical institution, that then uses that money to pay various wages, rents on buildings, to fund charitable work, etc. If you want to truly give up 10% to God, set out some cash and torch it…otherwise it’s just going from one person to another person.

  42. MikeC | February 1, 2013 at 3:40 pm

“Businesses have to what they can to stay afloat after being punished by the government. The funny thing is some people were getting health care before obamacare. now won’t be. obamacare has actually HURT these low-wage workers.”

These blanket statements kill me. My organization’s insurance just got better, cheaper, and we added Same Sex Coverage. We are FAR from a large company with deep pockets. Perhaps if they weren’t trying to squeeze every penny out of their workers instead of elsewhere in the budget such shady measures wouldn’t be necessary!

  43. Dan Casey | February 1, 2013 at 3:47 pm

MikeC, Welcome to the blog! (prepared to be called a liar, tho).

  44. MikeC | February 1, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Dan, thanks. I’ve posted a few times before, but few and far between. It’s a shame that my statement will be immediately discounted, it’s all true. I will also add that we have done these things, while maintaining zero cost to employees. The organization pays our premiums, expect for spouse and dependent, clearly.

The main factor here being that I work for a non-profit, our goal isn’t filling pockets. We pay competitive salaries, have good benefits, and the doors are open! Granted some months are harder than others, budget wise, but you make sacrifices and continue forward. “No new computer for “X” this quarter, maybe next”

When employees are valued both individually and professionally that’s where the difference is.

    Just my humble two cents.

  45. Justin True | February 1, 2013 at 4:15 pm

Suzie, I could care less what color her skin is. If you watch the video she is ignorant and couldn’t spread a message or get a point across to anyone with half a brain.
Its very obvious that all you have to do to get the title “Pastor” is send in 10 UPC’s from the back of Mad Dog 20/20.
All she does is sit up on that stage running her dumpster of a mouth and steal the people’s money in the audience.

  46. Rob Thommins | February 1, 2013 at 4:26 pm

When i am in the Roanoke area, I always try to eat at the
Bedford Diner. Great food, fair price and wonderful service.
Small mom and pop diners are where the best food can be found.

    “Chain chow” cannot compare.

  47. Kristen | February 1, 2013 at 4:56 pm

Applebee’s food is mostly fat and salt, enhanced with a pile of MSG. There are dozens of local spots you can get a great meal at for no more money and better quality stuff.

The “business first” crowd can’t process posts like MikeC’s without clutching their chests in cognitive dissonance. Last month I was trapped in a car with CNBC on, and one of the interchangeable pasty pudgy screaming heads was talking to a Disney heiress. She was part of a group of ueber wealthy people who favored raising taxes on themselves and those like themselves. She had a very positive tone and attitude which didn’t crack when her interviewer was nearly apoplectic when when she voiced her view that the super wealthy here are under taxed. I would have thought he’d have been aware of her positions before she got there, but he either didn’t bother preparing or forgot. He acted as though he was in pain.

  48. Debbie | February 1, 2013 at 5:01 pm

I’ve been eating at local places for so long now that the thought of eating at chain restaurants is nauseating.

I never can understand why people go to a sit-down restaurant and think they don’t have to tip for any reason, or that they can use the tip as a reason to drive their server crazy. Eating out costs money. Not willing to spend it? Stay home.

    Comment by Suzie — February 1, 2013 @ 7:37 pm

Suzie, you are always trying to pin someone for being a racist when you make more racist, sexist, and just flat out ignorant remarks about ANY minority!
The dialect I wrote out is not strictly a black dialect… The only real reason why you think so is because YOU believe a dialect like that is strictly held to a skin color.
I guess your dialect sounds like a port-a-jon door slamming, huh?

  57. Sandi Saunders | February 1, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Suzie, the whine of racism from you is like that of the landfill, expected and after so long, ignored.

As to your whine over business being able to “stay afloat” and the lie of them “being punished”, you simply have no shame. As Mike C said, things are actually going to get better for a lot of businesses and workers (which sadly will make you angry). Your disdain for workers is legend. The government has to have revenue and no business is forced to “be punished”. Seems like the success and money still outweigh the punishment for most of them. Including your imaginary business.

  58. Sandi Saunders | February 1, 2013 at 9:38 pm

I admire your ability to stir things up. The libs get rabid over your posts and lose all sense of reality when trying to twist your words into something they can misappropriate and then fuss about. Very well done.

DD may have threatened to put a beating on me as well but I can’t recall exactly how many virtual meltdowns the poor guy had before his shrink had his internet disconnected until he completed anger management class. I swear to God, it’s easier to get a wingtard all twisted up in a homicidal rage than it is to steal candy from a baby. Then again, this is like the air that I breathe. It’s just that freakin’ easy. A behavioral physiologist could potty train a cat easier than he could teach wingnuts the self-restraint of a sixth grader.

Yeah guys, cause Suzie has never made fun of anyone’s vernacular or speech. Watch out for that lightning sister Suzie.

  84. gdad | February 2, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Well, Sandi, we certainly know that suzie doesn’t mind pretending she’s somebody she isn’t, which is MUCH more of a deception than altering your accent a tiny bit.

    “waitron”???

  86. Kristen | February 2, 2013 at 4:22 pm

Pamalala’s just spent too much time in the rarified air of taquitos and Slim Jim’s. it’s made her snobby.

  87. gdad | February 2, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Once upon a time, Debbie, some folks tried to promote the use of waitron as a gender-neutral substitute for waiter or waitress (I’m not sure why, server works just fine). Some folks use it as sort of a demeaning term, which, knowing pammala’s blog persona, is no doubt how she meant it. Wouldn’t she just be a joy to work for?

Mike C, re “better and cheaper”
I am looking for better and cheaper for my company healthcare, could you please suggest your carrier? I am sure they will appreciate your recommendation.

That waitron means a person who is waiting on you, I get, it’s obvious. It sounds like a term that an insufferable person would use.

About this blog

Metro Columnist Dan Casey knows a little bit about a lot of things but not a heck of a lot about most things. That doesn't keep him from writing about them, however. So keep him honest!

He welcomes your rants, raves and considered opinions, so long as the language is civil (i.e. no four-letter words). He'll read all your posts and may or may not respond.
