I feel compelled to break my Lenten hiatus from the blog to comment on the horror that is Andrew Cuomo’s abortion bill, which:
Allows abortion right up until birth for any reason.
Allows abortions by ANY medical practitioner, not just doctors. (So much for concern for women’s health, huh?).
This is an abomination opposed by most of even the state’s Democrat population. Cuomo, a so-0called Catholic (who is also has a live-in girlfriend in the Governor’s mansion) is an absolute disgrace to the office. The voters should come to their senses and demand his resignation.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the ultimate goal of the far-left. We see the true colors come out when a far-left politician feels safe and emboldened. This ghoulish bill, I might add, is 100% consistent with obama’s wishes and goals. Dr. Mengele would be proud.
Do you people on the blog really agree with this? I hope to God not.
The article linked below provides just a bit more factual information regarding the legislation Gov. Cuomo of NY is proposing.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/17/nyregion/cuomo-bucks-tide-with-bill-to-lift-abortion-limits.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
For the record, I agree with Cardinal Dolan’s expressed view on this legislation.
The Tennessee Williams quote is a fairly accurate comparison to the corner into which the GOTP Party has painted itself.
According to dogma, does Suzie now have to say three hail Mary’s and do penance by inviting a pedophile priest over to dinner for breaking her
Lenten promise?
#1 Who won the pool?
Hi Folks,
The effect of sequestion has been bantered about on other threads, but I don’t recall seeing what the currently agreed to squester cuts actually reflect in real spending. For perspective, I believe that the sequester cuts will entail “a 5% reduction to the 14% spending increase since 2008″. In the scheme of things, that doesn’t warrant all of the effort that libs are putting into the gnashing of teeth sound that we’ve been hearing lately. Think about it. The sequester calls for a 5% reduction in descretionary spending AFTER the stimulus spending spree of 2008-2009, and including budget extensions in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
I believe the sequester cuts are based on the base-line budget of 2011-2012.
BTW, didn’t obama blurt out at least TWICE during the 3rd debate, “the sequester WILL NOT happen!”?
Also, wasn’t obama supposed to have submitted his budget proposal for fiscal year 2014, to congress by now?
The link below provides some interesting perspective on our spending over the past 5 years.
http://hotair.com/archives/2013/02/07/wsj-scary-sequester-a-5-reduction-in-discretionary-spending-after-14-increase-since-2008/
Looks like Tebow reconsidered speaking that hating “megachurch”. Good for him. I guess the call of the endorsement dollar is louder than that of his christian duty.
Has Rep. Bob Goodlatte put the kibosh on immigration reform?
Which is it Frank, has it been “bantered about” or is there some great “gnashing of teeth”?
–
And no, President Obama was not “supposed to have submitted his budget proposal for fiscal year 2014, to congress by now”.
–
The real “hot air” in this discussion is the one that says those cuts will not affect the economy. Good luck with that, since the obstructionists will own these cuts, you had better be right, for once.
Frank,
Below are some quotes from economists projecting the impact of sequestration upon our weak, but growing economy. The first quote suggests that economic growth(GDP) is likely to be reduced by more than 41% if sequestration occurs. The cuts may be small Frank, but the impact will be devestating. If they want to make cuts make them surgically, not across the board. Big retailers like WalMart are already screaming about the reduction in spendable income caused by the increase in payroll taxes back to 2010 levels. States like Virginia, which gets $1.25 back from the federal government for every tax dollar its citizens contribute to the federal treasury, will be particularly hard hit be defense cuts and by layoffs of federal employees. The numbers may be small Frank, but the impact will not be small.
“The cumulative effect of the sequester and the tax deal struck in January might slash economic growth by as much as 1.25 percentage points — from a growth rate that otherwise might have been more than 3 percent — in 2013, economists estimate.”
“They also argue that macroeconomic estimates of the impact on growth probably understate the damage that will be caused by cutting spending indiscriminately.”
“Many economists are particularly critical of the arbitrary nature of the cuts, arguing that Congress could reduce annual deficits by the same amount with far less economic damage by spreading the cuts across a broader range of programs, directing them at lesser priorities or giving government agencies more discretion in how they make them.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/21/business/budget-cuts-may-stall-economic-growth.html
Below is another example that indicates Republicans believe if you can’t win elections by following the existing rules, you just change the rules. I’m sorry to say this, but you just can’t fix stupid!

http://twitchy.com/2013/02/21/twitter-pressure-forces-npr-to-correct-claim-that-obamas-sequester-is-a-republican-invention
By hook or by crook, is the way some roll, Ron.
It used to be that when you clcked on a comment, it took you to that comment, now it just takes you to the thread. Will they fix that?
In Google Chrome, it still takes me right to the comment Debbie.
Okay Sandi, thanks. It’s my computer, then.
I’m just not loving the changes now.
Hi Ron, Regarding your post at #11, I particularly liked reading near the end, the following comment made by the author…”While the cuts would take a….modest….toll on the economy, the pain would be concentrated in some areas, like the Washington, DC suburbs that are home to many federal workers and contractors.” And, the following quote, which concludes the NYTs’ piece, is particularly instructive: “Sequestration would feel like a cold to the rest of the nation…”, so said Rushern L. Baker, III, Executive of Prince Georges County, MD.
Even libs in your link are saying it’s no biggie, Ron. Did you read what you linked?
BTW, during the 3rd debate, barack obama promised the American people that “sequestration would not happen”. Was he lying?
Didn’t sequestration originate in the White House, Ron? …or, so says Bob Woodward. Why is it now said by obama to be a republican thing?
I’m good with fighting a cold, Ron.
“#1 Who won the pool?”
Shucks, I had the 22nd.
Frank,
Yes I read the links I post. Lowering the GDP growth rate in excess of 41% is not chump change Frank. Yes, places like Northern Virginia, Norfolk & the Hampton Roads area are just a couple of areas. Any place that depends on a military base or defense operations will get hit. From Maine, to the Gulf Coast to the west coast. It will be more than a bad cold Frank. We have a small manufacturer, that depends on defense contracts, in my town that put its employees on notice Monday of this week that if the sequester happens they are out of jobs as early as April or as late as May. That will occur in many places accross the country Frank. It isn’t the cuts happening in this fiscal year. The cuts get bigger in 2014, 15, 16 & beyond. It may start as a bad cold, but it will be pneumonia by the time it finishes Frank. Sad part is that it doesn’t have to happen.
I’m pretty relieved. So far, not one blogger has come out in agreement with Cuomo’s gruesome bill. It makes me think very very few are in agreement with the radical Communist element of the left on abortion.

Governors, stop bashing liberal arts

For example, recent college grads with a degree in architecture have a 13.9% unemployment rate, while English literature majors had a 9.2% rate, according to a study conducted by Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workplace [ http://www9.georgetown.edu/grad/gppi/hpi/cew/pdfs/Unemployment.Final.update1.pdf ]. The report also found that communication majors had a lower unemployment rate than mechanical engineers and computer science majors.

Wasn’t Dr. Mengele “The Angel of Death” a Catholic?
Well, golly, Ron.
I didn’t read ANY of what you just posted in the NYTs article you sent. You should write for the NYTs! Really. And Ron, do ya really think we will still be “sequestered” in 2014? 2015? 2016? Sheesh, Ron. Are you serious?
Hey Ron, concerning your towns’ decision to follow the law…. too bad we’re not right before an election. Remember, it was your guy …obama… who “covered” employers to NOT FOLLOW the “WARN” ACT just days before the November election? Too bad we’re not right before an election, eh Ron? When it suits obama, the WARN ACT gets followed. Is that what you are saying? Are you serious?

Catholic bishops give cautious nod to morning-after pill
Germany’s Roman Catholic bishops have approved the use of the morning-after pill, but only under extreme circumstances. Church leaders made the decision after two rape victims were refused the pill at a Cologne hospital.
The bishops, meeting in the German city of Trier, agreed that Catholic hospitals in Germany should be allowed to prescribe the morning-after pill for women who had been the victims of rape.
However, Germany’s Catholic clergy stipulated that medicines may only be used that prevent conception and not as a means to induce abortion. The use of drugs that cause the death of an embryo or fetus would continue to be banned, even for rape victims, they said.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the bishops said they wished church hospitals to take the correct medical decisions “on the basis of this moral and theological guideline.”
“In every case, the decision of the woman concerned must be respected,” the statement added.

So much for Lent!
(I’m still good on my Lenten program, tho).
I haven’t given up on my Lenten promise…
Apparently, I have a bit more fortitude and resolve than some. Does that make me a better Catholic?
-
So… who were we talking about again? Never mind. It doesn’t matter.
-
Completely unrelated story: If your business was foreclosed by the bank over a year ago and has already been auctioned and closed by the new owner, why would you decide then that you want to come by and disrupt the entire job site (with heavy remodeling being performed, no less) to try to claim items left within the building? There was no legal standing for her, of course; the building was sold as is, with all equipment. Why, why, why would you suddenly turn on the waterworks and act like you’re being literally robbed of your life’s treasures after you had abandoned them there for over a year?
-
Ma’am, I wish there was something I could do, but the entire contents of the building had been donated to emergency services. It’s not getting robbed by profiteers; it’s going to help needy families. Tears cannot undo what has already been done. I almost felt sorry for you.
-
And then, stuffed in a dark corner of the attic in a heavily taped cardboard box, I found something interesting. Apparently, someone high up in the business (interestingly enough, with her exact name down to the middle initial) had some “accounting” that they were certainly trying to hide (the boxes were hidden under old HVAC ducting). It was “simple” stuff, really – paying certain employees under the table, massive cash withdrawals, two conflicting sets of books, stuff like that. Are you kidding me?
-
I’m sorry that you ran a very lucrative, always in-demand business into the ground as a result of terrible management. I’m sorry that times got tough and you didn’t modify your business model accordingly. I’m sorry that you decided that gaming the system, outright fraud and [we'll just call the cash withdrawals] “anomalous liquidation” was the course you plotted, instead. As someone who has folded two businesses myself, I’m as sympathetic as I can be, but I would never roll into my former shop over a year later and cry that my daddy made this or my daddy bought that and virtually demand that they give me the stuff back while blubbering like they were selling my children into slavery. By the way, one of the things she claimed was made by her father had a “Made in Indonesia” sticker on the underside and is made of wood that isn’t even native to this hemisphere.
-
Now, I have to worry about if the property is locked down properly (and cart all my tools home every day) because I fear she was shifty enough to try to come back and just take her stuff and really got the vibe that she was just crooked enough to take even more if it was there. I love what I do… but some days, I really hate my job. Where have all the honest and earnest people gone?

hey sandi in post #10,

Chinese Hackers Are Getting Dangerously Good at English
-
And they’re coming to an inbox near you.
-
BY MELISSA CHAN | FEBRUARY 20, 2013
-
SNIP
-
The problem is, Chinese hackers are getting dangerously good at tricking users into clicking on what are known as “phishing emails” — messages with links or attachments that seem innocuous, but actually dump spyware on recipients’ computers. One of the secrets? Language skills. Over the course of my five years in China, hackers targeting foreign correspondents became more advanced, upgrading from early phishing attempts using haphazard “Chinglish” to more convincing and polished English.
-
Mandiant’s report underscores how difficult it is these days to spot a hacker. “The subject line and the text in the email body are usually relevant to the recipient. APT1 also creates webmail accounts using real peoples’ names — names that are familiar to the recipient, such as a colleague, a company executive, an IT department employee, or company counsel — and uses these accounts to send the emails.”
-
The irony in this brave new world of the digital frontier is that we need to return to old technologies. If you want to check an attachment’s safety, pick up the phone and call the sender. Even writing back with email might not work. Mandiant describes how in one instance, the hacker responded to a query by confirming the attachment (“It’s legit,” the email read). Email back … and you may well start chatting with the very person who is trying to deceive you.

Nice try, Henry, but it’s not working. Polls show a clear majority of Americans blaming Republicans for the sequester. Own it, GOP.

Wasn’t Dr. Mengele “The Angel of Death” a Catholic?
–
Don’t know that he was a practicing Catholic but according to his bio, he had a strict Catholic upbringing. As did Iosafat Kuntsevich and Alojzije Stepanac, who were Papist persecutors of Orthodoxy, the former sainted by Pius IX (after being “martyred” by the people he tortured and brutalized) and the latter organizing the WWII Serbian genocide.(1941-45). Stepanac was being considered for canonization by John Paul II.
-
Stepanac was allegedly fond of ordering children cut from their mothers’ wombs ([un]holy abortion, Batman!). He wasn’t above having his henchmen rape women on Orthodox altars, either. His main enforcer, Catholic agent Pavelic, was sent from Rome to help purge the Orthodoxy. Forced abortions, forced incest, intolerance and blasphemous rape can help you become a saint, kids!
-
Catholic priest Mate Mogush: “So far we have served the Catholic faith with a prayer-book and a cross, but now the time has come to use guns and revolvers”.
-
Pavelic’s confession (taken by a Franciscan monk): “In some regions I have already mopped up everything, from a chicken to an old man, and if need be, I shall do the same here also, since it is no longer a sin to kill even a seven-year old child, if he opposes our Ustashi order”
-
In the villages around Mostar Catholic priests in their sermons suggested to the people that it was no sin to kill a Serb because it was now war-time.
-
In 1994, John Paul II extolled Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac as “undoubtedly the most outstanding martyr in Croatian history”, calling him “the hero of sanctity”
-
-
Yep. Good ol’ Catholicism in action.
Dave Hicks: It’s an old paragraph break trick from the days of BBSs. Ahh, the early 90′s… back when you could access the Internet (or rather, what it was) with a 300 baud modem hooked to a TRS80. I think it was just slightly faster than the telegraph circa 1860.
Pictures? We didn’t need no stinkin’ pictures. Our porn was ASCII and we liked it!
#13 Pretty funny that Henry and “twitchy.com” (snicker, snicker, guffaw, guffaw) apparently think that NPR slightly altering a headline that wasn’t really wrong to begin with, tho not the substance of the story at all, is some sort of pwnage. But that’s what happens to your brain when you’ve been rotting at Free Republic too long.
@32 Unsourced. Made up. JM White quoted findings from the Communist Yugoslavian regime who was very upset at Archbishop Stepanac for publicly condemning them.
As for Mengele, yes he was raised Catholic, but as we have found out with Hitler, Kennedy, Cuomo, Pelosi, and others, it doesn’t mean you can’t lose your way and veer far, far left into total godlessness.
Re: J.M. White at 10:35 pm

FWIIW, I go back to the usenet and UUCP architecture days.

Although Suzie is allegedly avoiding the blog (not reading?) for Lent, she would love this:
Sure with all of obama’s make-work government jobs, the social sciences might be gaining on the hard sciences which tend to go more private sector.
BTW, I have heard the Mayo Clinic has drastically cut its research department due to obamacare. (R&D is always the first casualty of socialized health care)
But I don’t care what any leftwing author says, a competent computer science major or engineer will have job offers lined up by the fall of his or her senior year, good economy or bad.
Dave Hicks is acting like it’s some sort of revelation architecture grads are without jobs. The answer is simple. Nobody’s building because the economy is horrible, has been for five years, and shows no sign of improving.
hey dan, why are my posts at #’s 29 and 32 still awaiting moderation?
All right, guys. I’m out again unless some other important topic needs discussed like the hideous Cuomo proposal.
Did you ever the 7-bit ASCII character set?

IIRC, it did have paragraph breaks.

Now the old memory is failing me, but wasn’t 000 1101 a carriage return and two would create a blank line?

“Allows abortions by ANY medical practitioner, not just doctors. (So much for concern for women’s health, huh?).”

Wonder why suzie doesn’t bother with the whole truth here?
Do all good Catholics just pop in and out of their Lenten promises? Must be hard to fast, repent, seek moderation and reinforce spiritual discipline. Who has time for reflection on Jesus Christ, his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection when there are people you need to berate anonymously on a blog?
–
I am sure God loves a caricature as much as the next person.
The Godless `left` will get their due…That, my friends, you can take to the bank.
“BTW, I have heard the Mayo Clinic has drastically cut its research department due to obamacare.”

As our troll would say: Unsourced. Made up.
Sandi,
Today is day 18 days past the date when obama’s 2014 budget proposal was supposed to be submitted to Congress.
The…guy…just…doesn’t…want…to…be…constrained…by…a…budget.
Below is a reasoned perspective on why the public just doesn’t much care about the “looming” sequester which is being touted as a horrible machination of economic doom and destruction by the libs.
Personally, I see this as the only way spending gets reduced under this president’s “leadership”.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/political_commentary/commentary_by_scott_rasmussen/sequester_puts_elected_washington_on_trial
