Your daily Letter to the Columnist — Feb. 3, 2013
Note from Dan: The following email was sent to me, at least one other person at The Roanoke Times, and a short list of other media outlets and personalities, including Fox News and Glenn Beck. The author is a reader who lives in the Smith Mountain Lake area whose name I’ve redacted. An open response by this humble columnist follows.
I wonder if you lazy pieces of media would bother to print this signed letter…
The letter below, Elected Officials Are Fundamentally Dishonest, was authored by Brendan Duffy, a resident of Sandy Hook, CT. He sent his letter to the editor of The Newtown Bee. It is wonderfully encouraging to read Brendan Duffy’s opinion. Note that his thoughts were actually printed.
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE
Dear SML reader,
Thanks for your email. Feedback is always appreciated.
It’s interesting that you would call us lazy. I mean, how do you know?
Fyi, newspapers are copyrighted. That means any original content they publish, including letters to the editor, are their property, and they may not be reused without permission.
So I doubt any of the people you addressed this to will republish it per your request, but not for the reasons you seem to think.
They will not republish it because they’re being careful to respect the copyrights of other publications, just like we expect others to respect ours.
A “lazy” person might indeed republish it. In other words, NOT republishing it is the opposite of being lazy.
I sincerely hope you grasp the difference, and that it’s not the case that your world view is characterized by the kind of breakdowns in thought processes that led you to conclude we are “lazy.”
Because THAT would make you a lazy thinker.
Your humble columnist,
