Just to let my fellow bloggers know that the pictures were taken earlier this year during an indoor practice with our baseball team. I went to thank them for a service project they worked on and took some batting practice. The pitchers were on their best behavior and never threw a knockdown pitch. :)

I can tell you that I paid for batting practice for a few days afterward. There are some things that older athletes should know better than to do again. Guess we never learn. :)

  2. Huntersdad | March 4, 2013 at 11:30 am

Ron, pat yourself on the back if you even made contact as an “older athlete”. The last time I tried batting practice I had a 14 year old make an old man look foolish at one of my kids’ practices. Hitting a baseball is truly one of those talents that if you don’t continue to use it, you lose it. My experience showed me just how bad my vision and hand-eye coordination has deteriated in the almost thirty years since I had picked up a bat. It’s hell getting old sometimes…..

On the baseball theme…we saw Trouble With the Curve last night and it was pretty entertaining.

Don’t like the sequester? Repeal it. HR 900 does just that.

  6. Ron May | March 4, 2013 at 5:29 pm

I think the pitchers understood that Debbie!! :)

  7. Ron May | March 4, 2013 at 5:32 pm

    Huntersdad,

I would pat myself on the back, but I would probably hurt my shoulders. :)

I took 15 pitches and actually made contact 3 times. One of the players who was watching said, “Not bad for an old man.” I took it as a compliment. :)

To the many “conservatives” who whine and wring their hands over the thought of taxing the “poor” corporations….

CORPORATE PROFITS SOAR AS WORKER INCOME LIMPS
“With the Dow Jones industrial average flirting with a record high, the split between American workers and the companies that employ them is widening and could worsen in the next few months as federal budget cuts take hold. ”
    —snip—
With millions still out of work, companies face little pressure to raise salaries, while productivity gains allow them to increase sales without adding workers.”

“So far in this recovery, corporations have CAPTURED AN UNUSUALLY HIGH SHARE OF THE INCOME GAINS,” said Ethan Harris, co-head of global economics at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. “The U.S. corporate sector is in a lot better health than the overall economy. And until we get a full recovery in the labor market, this will persist.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/04/business/economy/corporate-profits-soar-as-worker-income-limps.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0
    [my caps]

    This news article calls this time of cutting back on regular workers’ employment and benefits a “Golden Age of corporate profits” – especially those corporations that have devastated the workforce;
    laid off thousands of workers – requiring those who remain to work longer and harder for less;
    “outsourced” American jobs;
exploited tax loopholes to pay little or no federal taxes; and, took advantage of government backed lending, using their political influence.

It is clear that corporations are now “The People”, and we have become the “cogs” now living under the Constitution of the Corporate States of America…

It might be time for some folks to get their apologies ready to Sen. Bob Menendez.
    -
“An escort who appeared on a video claiming Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) paid her for sex has told Dominican Republic police that she was instead paid to make up the claims in a tape recording and has never met or seen the senator before, according to court documents and two people briefed on her claim.
    -
The woman identified a lawyer who approached her and a friend to make the videotape, according to affidavits obtained by the Post. That man has in turn identified another lawyer who gave him a script for the tape and paid him to find women to fabricate the claims, the affidavits say.”

Since I seem to be swinging for the fences in Pic # 2 above, I thought I would post a link to an article I found interesting. It talks about how we could sensibly begin to seriously talk about cutting government expenditures and reducing our deficits. It would be a stretch to say what’s outlined in the article will be implemented, but sometimes you have to swing hard. :)

If you really want to reduce government this is the first step to do so.

More on our famously pro-gun lawyer in Bburg…

    http://www.roanoke.com/news/nrv/1745731-12/judge-denies-bond-to-blacksburg-lawyer.html

“According to the warrant, officers seized eight firearms, two audio recorders, a pill bottle with pills, assorted ammunition and documents from a 2010 Mazda 3.

Marie Painter testified that she and the couple’s daughter are working to get rid of Joseph Painter’s firearms, which he has been known to keep in his house, his car and his office.

“He just has them everywhere,” she said.”

    Lots of psychotropics AND guns.

  13. Frank | March 4, 2013 at 10:08 pm

you have the look of a swinger, Ron. your hips are swiveled almost perfectly, your…swing…is reasonably level, your eyes are on the ball as the bat makes contact. Your open stance might be good for a sray hitter, but you sacrifice some power. I can’t see your hands, but I suspect they’ve got a good grip. Is that a can of snuff in your back pocket?

  14. Frank | March 4, 2013 at 10:09 pm

oops, ron, i meant “spray” hitter.

  15. Frank | March 4, 2013 at 10:13 pm

    dan,
what’s your point? i thought you didn’t think he had anything to worry about?

by the way, he does, and what you link to doesn’t set him “free” from that, ya know?

  16. Blacksburg Suz | March 4, 2013 at 10:25 pm

It amazes me still that he still has a law license, much less the legal ability to possess weapons. He was convicted of setting fires because he didn’t like the housing development going up near him. Everytime I read one of his ridiculous letters in the RT I remember the families living near him who were terrorized.

  18. Henry | March 5, 2013 at 8:37 am

    “Henry? Frank? Paddy O’Ryan?”

You don’t think a prostitute could be bought with money, do you? Kinda funny that the Democrat media ignored the allegations but immediately accepted the recantation. It’s almost as if the recant was what they wanted to hear and the allegation was not.
“De los Santos said she never consented to record the video and that it was recorded with a hidden camera. However, in The Daily Caller video, in which she is allegedly the woman wearing green whose face is blurred out, she appears wearing an earpiece and answering questions.”

    Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/03/04/3266938/alleged-prostitute-recants-story.html#storylink=cpy
but yet she felt pressured? Rather strange considering she says she didn’t know she was on camera. But you believe what you are told, Dan. We understand.

#9…..Yeah, right Dan….Please, pleaqse tell me you don`t beleive this. She was visited by a few `persuaders` and the story changes overnight. Naive, I reckon . It has become hilariously obvious that Democrat politicians are perverted, sexual deviants who tote their stupidity with them at all times. Some even tote it into the Oval office.

  22. Jason Perdue | March 5, 2013 at 9:53 am

I think it is hopeful that some Republicans on the national level are speaking of standing for something rather than in opposition. This can only strengthen the overall political process. While I generally vote for Democrats, I woulddearly love to have a reasonable alternative. All is not well with the Democratic Party, but as it stands now, the Republican Party is terminally ill. Here’s hoping some of those moderate Republican voices can regain sway in the party.

  24. Ron May | March 5, 2013 at 10:18 am

    Henry & Awood,

There have been sexual devients on both sides of the Congressional aisle for years.

I’m guessing the two of you would prefer not to discuss the activities of Larry “wide stance” Craig and his Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport arrest & conviction for lewd behavior. Probably don’t really want to discuss Rep. Mark Foley and his preditory behavior with congressional pages either. I’m sure that former Sen. John Ensign and his ongoing affair with the wife of one of his aides probably isn’t a topic for discussion around your dinner tables. Who could forget Sen. David Vitter, fine upstanding Christian man that he is, spending time and money with prostitutes. Former SC Governor Mark Sanford and his journey on the Appalachain Trail, or was that some trail in Argentina where he got lost. The one and only Sen. Pete Dominici’s special relationship with the daughter of one of his Senate colleagues, I’m sure is a fine example of Republican family values.

As I said, there is not much honor on either side of the aisle guys. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t start rock fights. :)

    -
You have a great recipe here, Awood. It should be published.
    -
    Awood’s Pestiferous Reality Smoothie
    Ingredients:
    > one fact, inconvenient to your reality.
    > 1/2 cup unsourced conjecture
    > 1/2 cup unfounded supposition
    > inanity seasoning
    -
In a blender, mix inconvenient fact with conjecture and supposition at high speed until desired consistency is reached (similar to pancake batter). Season to taste with stale inanity and serve in a tall, frosted mug. Garnish with grammatical atrocity. Serves 1.

  26. Dan Casey | March 5, 2013 at 10:43 am

The big difference between Domenici and Menendez is that all the parties to the Domenici mess agree the senator fathered a child with the daughter of one of his colleagues, and all parties to the allegations surrounding Menendez agree that nothing happened.
    -
Given those facts, Henry and the other will always stick with the Menendez stuff for 2 reasons:
    -
    1) They did not happen; and
    2) Menendez is a Democrat.
    -
Recall, this is the crowd that turned decorated war hero John Kerry into a Vietnam battle-fleeing coward while promoting GWB’s brave and selfless service in the Air National Guard while he was avoiding the draft.
    -
In other words, never be surprised when they stoop lower than you ever thought they would. That’s impossible.

The internet tough guy who’s going to go down in a blaze of glory when Obama’s army comes to get his guns… who’ll actually go down in a zephyr of cowardice and submission. Yes, sir. You, the nameless, faceless, ethereal entity lobbing insults and division from your safe little spider-hole, are certainly an authority on all things spinal.
    -
If your behavior and painfully feeble attempts at insults demonstrate what a conservative is (hint: they don’t), I’m glad to exclude myself from that label. Your kind of idiocy is a special blend of willful ignorance, confirmation bias, and feeble-mindedness and as such, your very presence in my former party offends me to the point of nausea. Your kind are a disease within the conservative movement that will push the GOP further into the wilderness until they purge you or are lost forever. Good luck with your inevitable future as a vestigial tail.

The altruistic gunners here who tell us frequently how happy we will be when a dangerous situation arises and they are there to “protect” us will appreciate this little story:

Subject: Woman Stops Grizzly Attack With 25 Cal Pistol

    The art of self preservation…

You don’t have to have a big gun if you think fast.

This is a story of self-control and marksmanship with an itsy bitsy shooter by a woman against a fierce predator.

What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?

    The Beretta Jetfire:

While out hiking in Alberta Canada with my boyfriend we were surprised by a huge grizzly bear charging at us from out of nowhere.
She must have been protecting her cubs because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire with me I would not be here today!

Just one shot to my boyfriend’s knee cap was all it took…….The bear got him and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace.

It’s one of the best pistols in my collection……..

  54. Ron May | March 6, 2013 at 9:06 pm

    Dave Hicks,

I don’t want to deny you the ability to own & or carry a firearm. However, I don’t think it should be more difficult for me to buy Sudafed or to get a hunting or fishing license than it is for me to buy a gun or obtain a CHP. I also don’t think it should be harder for me to vote than is it for me to buy a firearm.

I do believe that anyone, including you and me, should be subject to a national background check, even with private sales, prior to obtaining a firearm. I don’t believe doing that will stop all the gun murders that occur. Nor do I believe such a background check limits your ability, as a law abiding citizen, to purchase firearms.

The fact that I hold those beliefs isn’t, in my view, demeaning to you or anyone else who disagrees with me.

Dave Hicks: ” Dan and others here like to cast stones at CHP holders and gun owners because of the actions of a very few.”

In 2010, there were over 11,000 gun homicides in the U.S. That’s just murders, not all other gun violence. So Dave Hicks declares that he thinks 11,000 gun killers a year is “a very few”.

    -

You thought it, Dave Hicks, and so you posted it, and now you own it. And we’ll make sure you continue to own it. You think 11, 000 gun killers a year is “a very few”. Your sense of proportion is one I and many others find truly breathtaking. But it does explain why you and the NRA think your right to own military grade firearms trumps the right of six year olds to become seven year olds.

Dave Hicks, I literally cannot understand your first question. Then, your cited Cuomo article drawing pointless equivalencies is irrelevant. Each act of malevolence requires it’s own construct. Greenfield’s piece is the same pointless exercise as linking football outcomes that W beat X who beat Y who beat Z ad nauseum, until you can absurdly argue that Newport News Apprentice should be favored to beat Alabama. Drawing such pointless equivalency ladders is antagonistic to solutions.

    -

However, I’m mindful that I’m addressing someone who only hours ago declared, unprompted, that 11,000 new gun killers per year in the U.S. is “a very few”. Being unable to fathom the savage math that yields that particular moral relativism, I’ll keep my focus on the fundamentally anti-social mindset inherent in tools of rapid mass violence.

About this blog

Metro Columnist Dan Casey knows a little bit about a lot of things but not a heck of a lot about most things. That doesn't keep him from writing about them, however. So keep him honest!

He welcomes your rants, raves and considered opinions, so long as the language is civil (i.e. no four-letter words). He'll read all your posts and may or may not respond.
