Seafood for the Saturday OPEN thread
“There are a handful of barbecue seafood shacks on the beach at Hat Nai Yang, which is a fabulous place to have dinner. It’s very much run for locals and they serve the catch of the day, which might be lobster, white snapper or squid. It’s ridiculously reasonable, too.”
Tony Parsons
(Watch out for the waves, though).

speaking of steaks and seafood, we enjoyed same at The Blue Apron on Main Street in Salem last evening. very well prepared dishes, great appetizers, salads, atmosphere was relaxing. Tables were too close together for my taste, but the atmosphere was very pleasant, so, the table-closeness is no biggie. 1906 is our favorite, followed closely by the River Rail.
I’ve heard only raves about the Blue Apron.
It’s worth a try, Dan.
Here’s today’s truisms about religious practices around the world.
HOLY HUMOR
During these serious and troubled times, people of all faiths should remember these four great religious truths: 1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as God’s Chosen People. 2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. 3. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian world. 4. Baptists do not recognize each other at the liquor store.
Have a good day now!
Wayne Goodman….Beautiful….!
Exactly, as a life long Baptist, until I returned to Roanoke and saw their true hypocrisy, I’ve since joined “Baptist Anonymous”…It’s a wonderful 12 step program to the truth.
We went to the Taubman today, and my grandkids had a great time in the children’s section. I really liked the art exhibits upstairs, except for the John Cage exhibit. Most of his “art” looked like something my 3 year old granddaughter draws. I told one of the guards that, and he said, “I agree, I just don’t get it.” A friend on Facebook said he was there today with his family and they thought the same thing. They had to keep telling their young daughter to quit saying she could draw better than that.

I know art is a subjective thing, but I just kept thinking about some people being crazy enough to be willing to pay big buck for his drawings and wondering how people can pass off scribbles and crude circles as art.
Debbie
We went to the Picasso show at the VMFA a while back and wondered the same thing about some of his work. Especially the later works. I know that’s blasphemy to the artsy crowd, but that’s how it looked to me.
Debbie
Years ago I was told, by an art Prof colleague, that my art talent was at the arrested third grade level. I made the mistake of asking what he meant. He responded by saying I should have been arrested in third grade for my art.
LOL, Ron!
My daughter gave birth to a beautiful 9’4″ baby girl and we are so happy! I would share a picture (of course), if that were possible here. Merryn Elizabeth…kinda like that too. Babies are amazing but it’s really amazing when your baby has a baby. I’m one proud, obnoxious GrandPa!
Frank, Blue Apron is, IMHO, the best restaurant in Roanoke and on par with bistros we’ve been to in Paris. The food is amazing. The service is great. The atmosphere is cozy.
One other find in the restaurant category…Parkway Brewery, besides having a great IPA style beer, regularly has the Gastro Truck which has very good food. The fresh oyster Po’Boy with duck fat French fries is awesome. The Kobe beef burger with a fried egg on top is tasty too.
Congratulations Bill Perdue! on a healthy granddaughter with such a beautiful name! Welcome to “grand-parenting”, from one to another. My husband and I became gp’s on December 28th to a beautiful baby boy named Martin…
Congratulations proud GrandPa Bill Perdue!
Congratulations, Bill Perdue!!
Congratulations and mazel tov, Grandpa Bill! I wish every possible joy and blessing on your daughter and her family.
What would one have to spend at the Blue Apron for a reasonable good meal?
Congrats, Bill Perdue!
Bill Perdue, CONGRATULATIONS! (Donna is green with envy).
E. Duane,
From what I’ve heard it’s not cheap at all. We’re talking $100 a couple not including wine. But given the food and the service, I’ve never heard a complaint.
The story of that guy sucked into the sinkhole in Florida is so sad. It’s like something out of a horror movie.
Congrats to your daughter & to you Bill Perdue.
Congrats Bill Perdue! Hope mother and baby are doing well. What a wonderful time for your family.
Dan and E. Duane,
Dan’s right. my wife and i had a combined total of three beers, split a salad, split an appetizer (lobster bisque), and split a desert (all deserts were $4 each)….I had the most expensive item on the menu, my wife’s was mid range, and we got away with spending about $75…before tax and tip.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful news Bill Perdue! Congratulations and a happy adventure to all!
Bill Perdue,
Congrats with your daughter’s new arrival! While my kids still try and challenge me on something from time to time, my grand kids swallow virtually everything I tell’em hook, line, and sinker! I love it!
Good point on Parkway Brewery. I’m not a micro-beer guy, but I heard the proprietor give a presentaion not long ago, and my take is his business plan is the real deal…and, i have yet to encounter anyone who has visited his establishment, and/or tried one of his brews in a restaurant, to not rave about it. The gastro truck is an great asset, great combo of complimentary businesses.
Thank you all for your kind comments!
Blue Apron isn’t cheap but almost all of the entrees are sold in both appetizer and dinner portions/prices so you can keep the price down and try several dishes. I’ve had lunch there too and that is more affordable. It’s a special occasion place for us.
My children were raised to not be ill-mannered to their grandparents, even if they made their blood boil. As soon as they were old enough to decide their contact, the visits became few and far between. Good luck with that brainwashing Frank.
sandi,
and, well, sandi, we all have fun!
