The Post of the Day — April 17, 2013
Note from Dan: The following is by regular poster J.M. White. It was written on this thread as a response to another poster who complained about RWers derisively calling President Obama a liberal messiah.
“Most of my personal research into the matter reveals that the messiah meme originated when his own cheerleaders in ’08 called him “the one.” Of course, this was meant in reference to the real possibility of him breaking through the “good ol’ white boy” barrier to the presidency and not in any religious vein.
Naturally, the fundies got up in arms about it (as they do every new presidency) in their ever-persistent desire to bring about the Apocalypse. Seriously, when has some group not considered a new POTUS the Antichrist? They did it with Reagan. They did it with both Bushes. They did it with Clinton. They don’t want a Republican or a Democrat and they really don’t care about affiliation at all. They just want Jesus to come back; they don’t care how it’s catalyzed.
It follows that in today’s political atmosphere, the right-wing would seize the phrasing and twist it into a term of perpetual disparagement. It then trickles down into the double-digit-IQ troglodyte masses and spreads like a wildfire of ignorance. The sour grapes have long ago turned to vinegar and yet they still fill their glasses and drink. Too smart to be ignorantly indifferent, yet too dim to see the mass manipulation, their armies march forth, making fools of themselves and saving their handlers and facilitators the potential embarrassment.
Politics is easy today. You don’t have to embarrass yourself with asinine statements (not that that has stopped any of them); you just have to surreptitiously feed the statements to your less-intelligent constituents and they’ll draw the fire for you. When the outrage grows loud enough, you can just disavow their actions/ideas and wash your hands of it. Politics really is simple when you can beta-test all of your stupid and silly ideas on the easily manipulated, then toss those useful idiots like waste to the wayside when the heat rises.
The real problem is that the least-informed people seem to always shout the loudest. Too dense to realize that they cause more harm than good, they think they’re fighting the good fight, on the side of right. Sometimes when you have a tiger by the tail, it’s best to just let go . . . especially if it’s an intellectually challenged tiger.
When the Republican Party decided to embrace the Tea Party platform, it opened the floodgates to a deluge of dummies. Such a well-stocked toolbox could not be let go to waste, and use them they did. The GOP’s fatal mistake was the same one they always make: underestimation. The result was wave after pounding wave of stupidity and idiocy washing across their lands. Today, as we watch the waters recede, we can see the devastation wrought by this folly.
What we’re left with is stagnating pools of ignorance, breeding disease and even more ignorance, a perpetual plague needing purging. The “messiah” thing won’t go anywhere. They’re running out of things about which to complain (without looking too guano-crazy). Soon, this will be all they have left.
Despair, not, good friends. Obama will leave office in January of 2017. The economy will be roaring and conditions will be better than at any time during the previous administration. The messiah talk will fade to proclamations of triumph, as the pseudo-conservatives attempt to lay claim to our success.
We cannot allow ourselves to forget the truth – for over eight years, our political system was hijacked, then stalled by a group of people who refuse to believe that we are advancing creatures, progressively marching ever-forward. Their archaic way of thought is going extinct and that scares the hell out of them. They have always been chasing the train of human existence and they always will be.
I don’t think they realized that one day the train would be going too fast for them to catch anymore. One day soon, in a last, desperate gasp to stay relevant, they’ll just attempt to stop the train altogether. We cannot let that happen. We must show them that they have but two choices: adapt or perish.
Sorry for the novella.”
