“Mortal Man” is the tune that turned me onto The Persuasions, and it remains my all-time favorite number of theirs. I saw these a cappella masters two or three times in the early 1980s, back when Jerry Lawson was still leading the group. Once, at the Cellar Door, I shared a table with the daughter of Rep. Frank Wolf, who somehow recognized me from an econ class at Maryland, and the son of Sen. Phil Gramm — they were on a blind date (more about that here, in comment #2). The GREAT thing about a Persuasions show is halfway through the last set, they would invite everyone in the club to join them on the stage and sing. And that was FUN!
